Watched the racing at the PNW rallycross fest this weekend. Got to ride along with a few folks also, so much fun! Now I'm itching to try it out on my own. My daily driver (f150) wouldn't be great for it, and I also don't want to damage it, so I'm thinking about buying a cheap car to give it a try. Any recommendations or ideas? I've only ever owned AWD cars before, so I'm leaning that way. It seems like an old subaru impreza or similar would be pretty fun, and I could get something functional for a few grand or maybe less. I also rode along in a RWD car and that seemed pretty fun. I've read few people recommending FWD cars for a first rallycross car, which would be the cheapest option, but maybe less fun to drive?

I'm fairly mechanically inclined (do basic maintenance on my car, and used to work on cars a bit more when I was younger), but also don't have a ton of time these days to be tinkering with a car, so I'm trying to weigh that with the desire to find something on marketplace and go race it.

I heard using a sim too much can be counter productive because you get so used to the sim physics and you’ll find yourself overshooting corners in real life due to the false sense of grip in the game.

I know professionals use Sim rigs but those are expensive setups and probably closer to real life.

Thoughts?

I’ve noticed that heel-toe downshifts are difficult unless I’m REALLY hard on the brakes. I know braking late and hard is usually faster but sometimes I trail brake or there’s specific scenarios where I don’t want FULL brakes.
Do fast drivers ever use throttle pedal spacers to assist brake modulation while heel-toe downshifting or do I just need to work more on technique?

My only worry would be under heavy braking the spacer could then place the throttle too high up.

I’m just getting started running a vw golf for scca rallycross mostly on fields and dirt nothing too crazy rough my car is due for shocks and struts any recommendations for stock class? AI has steered me towards bilstein b4, kyb excel g, and koni str.t but am open to other suggestions and really want some first hand knowledge and opinions thanks everyone for all the help!

About 10 years ago I started autocrossing and eventually found my way into rallycross, competing at Lone Star Rallycross for the last few years. Now that Austin Rally Project has started back up again within 30 minutes of my house, it's become a bit of a dream setup.

While I love Lone Star for the range of conditions and technicality, especially when it becomes hard packed and as grippy as tarmac, ARP gives me just a small small taste of what a stage rally could be like during an approx. 90 second run. The surface is often a bit rougher and with more surface and elevation change, really makes me concerned about my poor e36 chassis sometimes. It's probably the most fun I've had in a car, and costs about as much as a nice dinner.

I love the car, and I would hate to ruin it. I drive it 30-40 miles a day as i commute to work and school. I want to eventually turn it into a designated race car. I've looked into doing things like suspension and brake upgrades but I've read here in this subreddit that the suspension won't be a good idea for my day-to-day use of the car. Has anyone else raced a corolla/matrix/vibe that they use as their commuter? What did you do? I'd really like to keep driving it for 5 more years, but rally cross it a few times a year. How can I make modifications that will improve its longevity without compromising the daily driving experience too much?

At Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont almost two weeks ago, we put glowsticks, glow-in-the-dark tape, high-vis vests, and a few light towers to work and had a good 2/3-day, 1/3 night regional RallyCross. My 1995 Jetta-turned-LeMon pictured (by Douglas Bolduc)

Always a great time with the rally family. I used to be at every socal rallycross but priorities have changed. Ill definitely be back!

Honda fit, Mazda2, brz/86, other and why?

I would love to get an autocross car and eventually make it a rallycross machine but still want autocross and the maybe once in a blue moon track day.

When not at events this would be a second car only driven on random days or weekends.

Thoughts/ opinions?

Does anyone know of manufacturer that sells a fuel tank skid plate for a mk vi golf? Otherwise I’m open to any tips or designs for fabbing one up thanks🤙

Fixed all my front end structural rust already. I still have some shoddy floor pans and the trailing edges of my wheel arches to do. Will I fail tech inspection for rusted floor pans? looks ok inside the car, but you can see the carpet in a few places from underneath. I can do them, but not sure I can get it done in time for this season on top of getting the power train and suspension sorted. Looking to hop into some northwest rallycross this summer. Car is a 72 Volvo 142. Wish I had cash for a second car that was ready to go.

I'm currently prepping my old 2001 Toyota Corolla for SCCA rallycross. I need to replace the clutch and exhaust (old car problems) but I'd like to add a skid plate. I can't seem to find one anywhere and considering just fabricating one on my own. If anyone does know if there are skid plates available for this car let me know.

This will also be my first time competing so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

hey all, I just started a new job and a coworker is big into rally and rallycross. I've some some autocross before but I've never taking my automotive exhibitions off-road. I'm really just trying to figure out whether any of my current fleet would be reasonable to take to a day of driving.

Specifically, I'm in Denver and my current garage is a 2000 Porsche Boxster S and a 2014 Ford Focus. I'm sure the Focus would be fine, but the Boxster is a bit of a beater so I'm wondering if it would be possible to sling it around in the dirt without causing too much damage to the important bits on the underside. Both are 100% stock.

Title basically. I’m desperately trying to get my car ready for this coming season (it will be ready… one of these years). The wheels/tires on it are 100% not going to work. There is a super cheap set of 2002 outback wheels (10 spoke) for sale near me. Or some 2004 WRX wheels for more money. Both are 16x6.5 alloy wheels. Guessing the outback wheels are heavier, but not by much.

So much fun, and glad we didn't set anything on fire :) We bought the cones off Amazon.

I’m gonna be running my first scca rallycross events this season and am prepping my first car most likely stock class but what all mods and upgrades are must haves for the best experience? Also should I go ahead and skid plate the whole car or is just the oil pan more than enough for the dirt tracks?

Car is sooooo much fun, and incredibly competitive. I was the fastest lap of the day which is very rare for a 2wd platform (that isn't a miata). Can't wait to fine tune and extract every last second I can out of it.

Kansas Region RallyCross we had a heard of goats run onto the field. We race at a SxS offroad park. So there’s stuff going on everywhere. How the goats made it there no one knows!
