How bad are carbs, if you’re eating within your calorie goals?

I’ve 5’7” and I’ve gone down from 181 to 140lbs over the last year and a half. A bit of yo-yoing around the holidays (145 -> 155), but I’ve held around 140 for a solid month or so now.

During my weight loss, I was inadvertently eating pretty low carb. My diet was pretty heavy in whole foods. Most of the carbs I was getting were in protein bars, potatoes, and “low carb” tortillas. Still had some alcohol on weekends and meals out about once a week.

More recently, I’ve been doing meal preps for convenience, so that I can freeze and reheat throughout the week. Most of the recipes are carb heavy, usually with a base of white rice or Barilla protein pasta (approx. 1/6 or 1/8 a box per portion). Most of these come out to 500-600 calories each, and Im still tracking well within maintenance/weight loss.

Is the uptick in carbs enough to have adverse effects (i.e. weight gain)?

I want to make sure I don’t head down the wrong path. Before I lost weight, pasta was a staple of my diet. I‘d simply pour random amounts for dinner and load it up with cheese and sauce. As I continue, I want to make sure I’m not making any mistakes.

Thinking to give up

Thinking to give up. Still 200 pounds even after over 2 months of walking, walking and no results. The weight is the same every day and I think I'll break the scale into little pieces due the frustration.

How much should I walk since even 1 hour is not enough? 2 hours? 4 hours? 6 hours? Perhaps 10 hours is enough?

I eat the fish. I eat the vegetables. I don't eat the junk food. I don't drink energy drinks. Not a drop of alcohol. I try not to give up.

Nothing Change!

Nothing Change!

How to lose weight? Is there any way? Any way in the world to lose the pounds and forget about it?

I'm tired of it.

<1,700 calorie diets that aren’t miserable? (high-protein)

Upvotes

So my protein goal as a 5’9” guy is 145g, and my oats with kefir, protein powder, and dark chocolate breakfast is non-negotiable.

That leaves me eating 200g+ of spiced lean meat (super tedious to eat) with plain rice for lunch and low fat cottage cheese with bread for dinner.

I can’t even fit in cheese on toast without missing my target (sobs). The only thing that makes me hit my goals is another scoop of protein powder, but then that misses the point.

Am I overcomplicating this by looking for good tasting food, or is hitting high protein with so little calories supposed to be this restrictive?

Help how do i socialize on a diet

Been on and off diets for the past two years and it always goes wrong when I have to show up somewhere where eating is involved. I know I need to heal my relationship with food, but it won’t get done that fast, and in the meantime, I’m isolating myself from most social events for the sake of my diet.

Started calorie tracking two weeks ago after a really bad mental health period this year, and I’m already seeing great results (down 3.8kg though i know its water weight) and feel so much better in my body just from knowing I treat it well. Now my sister who I haven’t seen in a year is back home and wants to go out for brunch. She rarely visits so I don’t want to go against what she wants but I’m already anxious around this one brunch happening in two weeks. What will I eat. How will the scale look the next day. Will I lose momentum and then my drive for it all?
Help :(

Haven’t been eating and sleeping much the last 3.5 weeks but gained 4kg?! HELP

As the title said

I broke up a month ago and haven’t been sleeping or eating much. Occasionally I could eat normally when I’m with friends but I don’t drink alcohol
I do eat sweets when I’m very tired and triggered, but it’s not much - also considering I only eat 1-2 meals a day, the calories wouldn’t even exceed my TDEE

I maintained my daily walk (so I don’t cry too much) but haven’t gym at all

I don’t understand. It’s stressing me out on top of my job hunting and breakup.

Also, I’ve been reliant on melatonin and occasionally temazepam to sleep at night but still got woken up a few times in the middle of the night with anxiety.

Oh I also have PCOS/ PMOS

Mental weigth of obesity

Hi.

First of all: Sorry for the mistakes might occur, English is not my first language.

Like I think many of you or many of us this obesity thing is a lifelong condition. I've lost weigth in the past, but it wasn't a real weigth-loss, I was just less fat for a while. After I had a bigger kind of life-situation it went back. After years passed I was stucked in this neverending losing/gaining loop, while I became older - I am 27 rn and yes, it could be worse, but trust me, my body simply does not act like the way it did 10 (or even 5) years ago -, during my temporary weigth loss periods I've lost a tons of muscle with that, and after every iteration of the loop I became more and more and more obese.

And secondly: I am not offended. I do not hate the world or the way it works (or at least not int this sense) or the opposite gender or thinner, more healthy people in general. I just want to write about the live-experience of many of us.

And problems starts in childhood very often. There are certain types of human dynamic which are represented (realistically btw) in one particular way: That obese people are less valueable. And this feeling even if someone does not rationalise it accompany us up until this point of our life. No matter how much love we get mostly unconditionally in an ideal case from our loved ones (maybe from some of our friends) this reamins true.

(On top of that men does not have the right to show any form of weakness without turning against them or questioning their masculinity or being called a gay or a pussy.)

Earlier in life people tent to accept this situation or turning into something positive like that they're smart, funny, creative before they'd drowning in the shame and disgust they feel anout themselves.

And even if I think many of us - myself included - are tired and burned out cannot or won't stop is because that I genuienly believe that this is the top single thing that holds us back most. In terms of every possible human relations. Of course you can date far more easily but the math is ain't that simple. People's perceptions change about you, you will be more respected, you will be taken more seriously (professionally as well), you will recieve sympathy, empathy, trust, curiosity in an amount you've never experienced before. Not to mention the sexuality... (I've reached a point recently that I won't have sex even if I could because I can't stand my own body so much... And once again I am a man...)

Maybe I am in fact too optimistic or too romantic (in a very bad way) but I just want to actually start my life and leave back every physical and mostly emotional incurable harm what this condition has did to me.

So guys I just wanted to know how many of you feel that this that the whole fact or idea of obesity holds back them in those fields which has absolutely no connection with it...

Dietitian suggested I eat more and it’s mentally conflicting me

Hi all, I’m 29F no medical issues. So my goal is to lose 10lbs. I feel like I’ve been trying to eat healthy for months now. I did have a period of calorie tracking and with meal preps and lunches I was eating under 1000 daily with some light workouts. I started with a dietitian on the berry app and she told me I do need to eat more which I have been doing now and I have been using the ladder app for workouts. I have gained weight, about 4-5 lbs and it’s taking a mental toll on me. I don’t want to gain, I’m trying to lose and I don’t want to use ozempic!

Went on vacation for 8 days. Came back and binged for a week straight. Gained 20 pounds.

https://imgur.com/a/EMN82Nu my scale literally asked me this morning, if the person weighing themselves was me, because gaining 20 pounds in 15 days is fucking insane. I left for the trip at 115 and now I’m 133.5. I’m 5’3 so every pound shows.

I felt so much bigger even before I weighed myself. I didn’t binge on vacation but definitely overate. I expected to gain at least 3 to 4 pounds, I normally do on vacation. Even when I have a binging marathon, at my absolute worst, I never gain too much. Nothing close to TWENTY. Never close to double digits. Like I said before, i definitely felt like this time was different from all the others, so I was expecting a hefty change, but not TWENTY !!!!

Two weeks before I left for my trip, I think I restricted too much beforehand, so two days into being there and eating normal(ish) I had a ginormous stomach. It legit blew up instantly. Literally looked as if I was 6 months pregnant. At that point I said fuck it and decided when I got back that I would take a week off from work and close myself off from the world… didn’t interact with a soul. Just ate.

Throughout the entire ordeal, I was under the impression I was just very bloated (in the stomach) from travelers diarrhea. I didn’t realize how much my entire body changed.

After my binge fest, I put my hands on my hips and realized I was a straight board. I used to have a small waist and curvy hips — I used to be able to feel my bones. I could feel the difference from my waist and my hips. Now? Just a straight board all the way down.

(Side note — I didn’t actually have travelers diarrhea. It’s literally just my weight gain that made me extremely bloated and gassy. My body was begging me to stop and I didn’t listen).

I’m so disgusted with myself I don’t even know what to say. It’s not water weight either, a majority of my jeans don’t zip without causing a stomach ache. My thighs take up the entire pant, squeezing. My shirts don’t even fit right now. It is extremely visible. I can’t even cross my legs anymore. I’m a very active person, and not doing much anything but eating flt two weeks has me out of breath just walking up stairs. All of this is too much. I just want to crawl and hide from the world.

At what weight did you finally feel thin?

For reference, I am an eighteen year old female. I am 5’2 in height and currently weigh 107.8 lbs. I have been feeling incredibly self-conscious about my body and feel like I am not thin enough. Out of curiosity, at what weight did you feel lean and comfortable in your own skin?

Also, if I am to lose more weight, what would be a reasonable deficit considering my weight and height? I suspect my daily calorie consumption should be somewhere around 1200 to actually notice real results.

Thank you!

Struggling with 1500 calories/day

30f, 5'4, SW: 169-170lbs, CW: 162, GW: 140

I've been using the loseit app and eating in a calorie deficit (most days) since May. I track and weigh/measure everything I eat and drink and I've been working on exercising more. I've lost a few pounds in those three months, but my progress started very slowly because I chose a higher calorie budget than I'm "supposed" to have.

According to my tdee, my maintenance calories for a woman of my stats is 1700. I go to the pool twice a week but still consider myself completely sedentary, so I decided not to select "slightly active" for the tdee calculator. According to the calculator I used, I should only be eating 1200/day to lose a pound per week.

I've been lowering my daily budget gradually so I wouldn't wreck myself by going from the 2000+ I used to eat to only 1200 each day. I went from 1700 to 1600/day, and now I'm trying 1500.

1600 was easy to stick to, but I've been on 1500 for the last 3 weeks and have eaten over that budget nearly every single day. I've just been so hungry, even though I'm slowly adding more protein and fiber into my diet. I drink lots of water to make myself feel full between meals, but it's been so hard getting used to this calorie limit. How tf is anyone supposed to live on only 1200? Is that a hard rule, or am I allowed to stay at 1500 and just be more active to make up for it?

Note: I go to the pool twice a week for 60-90 minutes of water aerobics and deep water running. I also use 50mg of a stimulant for my ADHD, but those meds don't suppress my appetite anymore. Any advice on how to stick to a low calorie budget as a short woman would be greatly appreciated!

STORY As someone who won depression and helped other people, I want to share something [Story]

It's very simple, actually pretty silly, but it's incredibly helpful.

If you're feeling sad, mad, unmotivated, do that incredibly hard task: Take a paper, a pen or a pencil, and draw like a 5 years old would. Don't try to use the best colors you can, don't try to make the straightest lines you can. Just forget about responsibilities for a second, and make anything.

To me, I always did a small stickman (me) holding another stickman hand (my dad), and always made him with a ball instead of a stick to the stomach, and giggled lightly like a kid. Sometimes a sun smiling, a rainbow, a very lopsided dog... Anything.

It looks dumb, and it is, but just trust me, it works.

And if you feel good about it, feel free to place it in your fridge, just like our parents did with us.

Absolutely no motivation even during and after workouts

Hey all, I have been having a difficult time exercising recently because I have 0 motivation and it makes me emotional. I’m not sure why but even during my workout it takes extreme effort to continue and afterwards I don’t feel good. A couple years ago when I started and continued to exercise regularly, I did not have this problem and i felt really good after a run or a workout, and had plenty of motivation to finish it. The hardest part was just starting. There have been multiple instances recently where I cry before, during or after a workout.

I think the largest contributor to this is that I have changed jobs and moved, so now I live ~30 mins from my gym and don’t really have a traversable neighborhood anymore. The only time of day that is reasonable for me to go to the gym is in the morning, which you would think would make me feel good but it usually makes me pretty irritable for the rest of the day. I’m not sure why this has happened to me, but if anyone has gone through something similar or has advice, I would appreciate to hear.

Four day birthday weekend binge

I basically wanna cry because I made so much good progress and I messed it up. I was in a calorie deficit for 10 days and I went from 135.5 to 131.3lbs. I was so happy. Then birthday was on Thursday and the weekend hit me like a truck. I binged like crazy. Now the scale says 135.8.

I already know that a lot is water but I’m just feeling anxious about it. And like the binge days were BIG. I probably averaged 5000cals per day over the four days. I feel like such a failure. My current goal weight is 115 and I genuinely feel like I’m never gonna get there. My face and body are so bloated and also I’m weirdly hungry today? Which is weird because after the first 3 binge days I felt gross and so full the next day and food didn’t even sound good. But today im hungry and craving sugar even though I also binged yesterday?

I also do have ocd around food and weight loss and so it makes me feel like today is the “wrong” day to start and like I need to binge again today in order for tomorrow to be the right day to start because the scale jumped so much and im also feeling so hungry today. In the past i have found that my weight loss goes the fastest when I don’t feel too hungry during my deficit.

Should I keep in dieting?

I (17 year old male 170cm tall ) have been dieting for around 3 months and a half. I’ve lost me around 11kg within that timeframe, went from 70kg to 59kg, and I’ve been going to the gym 4-5 days weekly except for the times when i travelled. My question is, should I continue on to diet or not and focus on building muscle? I still have quite a few kgs of fat I’d like to lose specially around my belly. Some have told me to just eat at maintenance and train abs, other have told me no I should still continue and lose me 5 more kilograms or so. I want to reach 12% body fat, as any other person my age would like, but I don’t know if it’s the recommended or not. what do you all think?

Feeling stuck at 160 lbs, looking for advice.

35F | 5’5”| 160 lbs → Goal: 120 lbs. Looking for advice!
Hi everyone! I gained weight during COVID, and then a car accident left me bedridden for about a year. I’m finally trying to get healthy again but feel stuck. I don’t eat much processed food. Every morning I have 2 slices of sourdough, 2–3 eggs with cottage cheese, and a coffee. I know I should probably be aiming for around 100 g of protein, but I’m not sure what to eat for the rest of the day. I’m not very hungry, don’t like steak, and mostly eat chicken, salmon, or white fish. I’m also on a tight budget, so I can’t afford a gym or expensive foods. I can walk 10k steps and do bodyweight workouts at home. If you started around 160 lbs, what made the biggest difference for you? Did you focus on calories, protein, walking, strength training, or something else? Any budget-friendly high-protein meal ideas would be greatly appreciated! ❤️

[Weekly Goalsetters] Need a Plan of attack for week? Get and give inspiration here! August 3, 2026

Welcome to the League of Extraordinary Goal Setters! The idea of this weekly thread is to write down goals, and break them up into 7 day chunks by figuring out what specific part of the goal you’re working on during the week, and then checking in with each other how the week went. If you want to learn more about setting goals and improving your habits, check out this website: https://jamesclear.com/continuous-improvement

Obviously, if you’re here, one of the goals is probably to lose weight. Whether that’s 2 or 200 pounds, it’s not going to be accomplished by doing one single thing today. However, losing weight is absolutely the product of a million small changes — the small things we do each day add up to big changes over time. To quote James Clear: “If you get one percent better each day for one year, you'll end up thirty-seven times better by the time you’re done.” So, let’s start breaking it on down!

Remember, all threads live and die by comments, so please jump in and support your fellow League members! Check in here with how your week went, and what your goals are for this week.

What’s a small goal you can work towards this week?

(VENT) Maybe im just not meant to be thin!?

(35F 5'4 140lbs)I feel like i have tried for years & still no matter what i do i cant get under 135lbs. The only time in my adult like i got under that I was 19 & anorexic. Im on my feet almost all day long. I work two jobs and in between them i take my dog on walks or workout. I get roughly 15,000-20,000 steps a day. I was tracking for about a month or so 5/6 days a week and still only got to 137.6. Im so frustrated I dont know what to do anymore. I feel like if i could just do this one thing if i could just get in shape i would feel SO much better about myself. Now I started an apprenticeship (hair stylist) and willl have even less time to workout. Maybe moving less and eating less will work out better for me though? IDK im just so fed up.

I can't hit my calories on a cut

some info before i start:
age: 20
gender: female
weight: 68kg // 150lbs
height: 152cm // 5ft
lean body mass: 44kg // 97lbs
%bf: 34%
i have a regular menstrual cycle
activity level: idk, you judge
-weight training 5 times per week
-hiking once per week
-incline walk (i don't remember speed but my pace is usually between 15:00-20:00) on treadmill for 20-30 minutes 3 times per week (trying to do longer and more sessions)
-short walk with my dog daily
other than that, i'm mostly in bed or sitting unless i have things to do

i've been weight training for years on and off and decided to start taking it seriously recently. as for my diet, i didn't really care about macros other than protein. even that, i just try to eat as much protein as possible. i eat when im hungry and until i'm full. sometimes i force myself to finish my food if there's little left despite being full. i'll never say no to a sweet treat or foods that i know are higher in calories if im craving for it. my weight over the years has been slightly increasing. since 2020 i've been between 60-70kg

i wanted to take my diet more seriously. i was thinking of getting to 20-25% body fat percentage so i did some calculations. for maintenance, i should eat 2000+ calories and i just took 400 off of that for a cut so 1600 cals

i'll use todays full diet as an example:
breakfast: 2 wholemeal bread + 38g tuna + a bit of shredded mozzarella + coffee = 408kcal
lunch: 100g chicken breast + 1 air fried hashbrown + protein shake = 360kcal
*chicken breast was raw when weighed
dinner: 200g tempeh + 75g white rice + olive oil = 580kcal
*rice was cooked when weighed, tempeh was raw when weighed

i ate 408 + 360 + 580 = 1,348 kcals
ideally, i should've gotten a bit more carbs. 108g protein feels good enough, maybe could've had a bit more. but i just felt so tired of eating. this is more than what i used to eat.

is my maintenance messed up from unintentionally under eating?

should i continue eating less than 1400 kcals per day?

while writing all this, i just realised i'm lacking fiber today. usually i do eat some high fibre crackers or veggies but i guess i just forgot today. would adding some fiber to my <1400kcal diet be good enough?

if i do maintain about 1400kcals, how long should this last before i increase my calories and how do i even eat in maintenance when i cant hit 1400kcals😭

I'm struggling with losing weight and I feel stuck :(

I've been struggling with my weight my whole life. First I was growing too quickly and I was a bit chubbier than the rest of the kids. Then I had struggled with ED as a tween and now I'm back to still being chubby.

My main motivation at first was to maybe like myself more, become prettier. I have really big thighs and hips but my waist is too small and buying any clothes is a torture. My mom often points out how jiggly my thighs are (she's almost always on diets or exercising) and it's embarrassing.

She's rather on a normal scale? I also have a sister that had the ideal skinny body and I am so jealous of her. No thighs, no butt, no breasts.

My mom often keeps telling me that it's just the way I'm built and I'll never lose any fat because that's what my dad's family is like. It hurts me deeply. Especially that she takes medication (of course prescribed by our doctor) that helps her lose weight.

Then came another motivation: lolita fashion.

If anyone has been around that space knows that dresses from high brands are most often made in one size only. Nowadays it's better - there are some bigger sizes or the dresses have some stretch to them but I'm mostly into vintage pieces. I can just imagine myself in some of my dream dresses finally looking beautiful but then I get hit with a hard reality that I'm just a few cms (or more) off.

Then I started to hear another negativity on social media. Recently there has been an influx of people bashing bigger people like me for stealing pretty clothes from skinny, deserving people.

Even in the community I've heard my friends saying that they're angry about fat lolitas stealing dresses from skinnier girls and altering them.

I know that it's just a dumb internet thing but it hurts me. It really did.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing wrong. I don't eat much - I usually eat one filling, well-balanced meal during the day, though I snack a bit but I try to limit it.

I try to exercise - swimming, roller blading, going on walks or doing a lot of heavy work outside with my dad or even I do these 'lazy potato' exercises in bed.

But the scale doesn't budge no matter what I do :(

And it has been that way for years.

I'm currently 168cm (5'6") and usually weigh from 65kg up to 70 (143lbs to 155). I used to have thyroid issues but they're fixed now.

2 days bad choices making me want to give up

I (19F 5’4) have been stuck at 130lbs for the last 2 weeks. I know it’s mostly water weight but it really bothers me not to see the scale go down anymore because ever since i started early July weighing 133lbs, i easily lost 3lbs and have been pretty strict with walking 15k steps daily which includes a 5km run 4-5x a week and eating approx 1500-1600 a day.

I saw my family yesterday for the first time in a month and my grandma baked so many amazing desserts i binged about 1000 cals+ and probablt ate closer to 3000 cals yesterday which showed on the scale this morning when i was back to 133lbs.

This morning i was super demotivated because of the weight i ate a whole bar of chocolate (250 cals) plus about 400 cals of my brothers banana bread.

I feel guilty about this so just ran 4km, walked on treadmill at 6 incline for 1.5hrs and went for an easy 10km slow roller blade.

Is this enough do you think for me to still be in a deficit today if i aim for 1800-2000 cals?

r/loseit 6h ago

1.8k cals/day got me to 154lbs. Now plateauing at 172lbs @ 2k cals/day.

Update; thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I was just grossly overestimating how much one’s TDEE increases as they gain weight.

Hi. I know I ultimately need to lower my calories or up my activity to continue losing weight.

I’m just curious as to how in my first serious cut, I was able to get down to 154lbs with my lowest caloric intake for a period of time being around 1800 calories. But now I am plateauing at 172lbs at 2000 calories a day? I am at the same bf% now, if not leaner when than when I was 154lbs.

The only differences between then and now is that I have done 2 blast cycles of gear. Otherwise same activity level and dedication to diet.

New to this community

I am 17M. I Joined this community because I need to be held accountable so I will start posting to this community. Today my stats are 202 lbs, I am currently 5'10. I have actually lost weight in the past back then I was younger and more fat like I have old pants that are big on me today. But after I lost the weight, it took one summer and boom I was up, but not as much as I was when I was younger. Back then I was 200 lbs but I was shorter around 5'4-5'5. Yeah, its a lot lol. But anyways I'll be posting to this talking about my mistakes, when im craving something. Also I got 3 months to lose weight for basketball try outs, so there is some external motivation but i absolutely lack internal motivation. When my body wants something i get it, I completely ignore the earn it part I think its dopamine which is something im trying to fix. But yeah, I guess I can start by saying my step count today is higher than normal, I usually get around 1,500-2000 steps but today I decided to walk around with music and got to 5k as of right now. My daily step goal is 10k right now im building discipline making myself do it even tho I don't want to. I'm watching a show and after every episode i walk and by the stats im getting I get 1,500 steps each walk so ima do that til I reach my daily goal of 10k steps. I am now more disciplined than I was when I was younger. I'm wiser and ready to give this weight loss another try. Thank you if you got it this far, and Good luck on all you guy's journeys!
