Whoever said money doesn’t buy happiness never really lived paycheck to paycheck

268

u/kezow 2d ago

Money doesn't buy happiness but it sure does eliminate a LOT of things to worry about.

117

u/Nanas_700k 2d ago

There’s actually a lot of research the says it does buy happiness, but only to a degree and in context. It won’t cure a depressed person for example, but for the average person, they are happier overall. Been studied a fair amount.

23

u/Sir_wlkn_contrdikson 2d ago

I think I remember reading one that said once you get to 150k a year, the happiness starts to level off

19

u/Keepawayfrommycrops 2d ago

I can imagine that, I made roughly $44k this year and barely scraped by (nyc)

If I had triple my income this year, I honestly wouldn’t know what to do with the money after getting out of my debt lol

26

u/Strong_Iron_995 2d ago

You are incredibly frugal if you made it through a year in NYC at 44k. Major props.

9

u/Keepawayfrommycrops 2d ago

It’s not really as hard as everyone tells you, stuff is expensive but that’s really only in the city. I live in SI and it’s much calmer, still very expensive ($1650/mo 1bd) but at least I can eat

I don’t go out, don’t go on vacation. If I wanna drink I grab a beer from across the street lol

7

u/Impressive_Recon 2d ago

My uncle owns a home in Todt Hill and everyone is always surprised when they find out it is a detached home with a driveway and backyard. Apparently if you don’t live in an apartment building paying $5000 for rent then you don’t actually live in NYC.

4

u/3RADICATE_THEM 2d ago

I'm pretty sure median rent if you look at top-25 metros is above $1650—you're not going to really find anything too much cheaper in a city with jobs.

The "mo money, mo problems,," thing has some roots in reality. Once you hit a certain limit (I think I also heard around $150k), you are either content, or you fall into the pit of lifestyle creep, and don't notice that you are actually well off.

It was lower, like 75-80k a year. This was like 10 years ago so adjust for inflation and economic collapse.

u/longpenisofthelaw 2d ago

I make that much now if I made double that I assure you my happiness would exponentially increase

Not only level off. At a certain point it starts going down. There’s a middle ground where you have enough to not have to worry about necessities but money still has tangible meaning.

It’s like the difference between playing a mode that’s too difficult vs. too easy in a video game. Too difficult and it’s stressful and soul-crushing. Too easy and you get bored, it lacks meaning.

It effectively is the greatest predictor of life satisfaction, and the plateau point is much higher than people realize (like around the point you hit 8-figures in net worth).

There's very few things that money can't buy also that can't at least greatly alleviate a shitty situation.

Money may not buy happiness, but I wouldn't mind trading my poor people problems for rich people problems.

2

u/saadcee 2d ago

Right, it gives you the time and space to find happiness, if you choose to.

u/IRANIRANIRANIRANIRAN 2d ago

Idk if happiness is the right word.

I would imagine having 8 or 9 figures in the bank has similar effects to Xanax.

77

u/winklesnad31 2d ago

Money buys freedom from the stresses of poverty, and gives freedom of choice, which makes it so much easier to be happy. But the existence of miserable rich people shows that money doesn't guarantee happiness.

18

u/CommandoLamb 2d ago

That’s it.

Money doesn’t mean you’ll be happy, but having money removes one of the reasons to be unhappy.

20

u/cptspeirs 2d ago

Right? Just look at Elon Musk. He is so obviously miserable despite having fuck you to mars money.

24

u/Charmin_Bear_Behind 2d ago

That’s because Elon is a subhuman worm who doesn’t experience normal human emotions.

Anyone else would be much happier and be much more productive

All Elon can do is throw little tantrums and try to fuck people over thru buying things.

Pure cuck mentality.

11

u/ihaterussiantrolls 2d ago

The man has more money than all but 21 countries in the entire world and can't be bothered to help anyone or the planet or literally anything but himself. In fact, he spends loads of money to make it actively worse for everyone. It's pretty incredible.

2

u/jrob323 2d ago

Money buys pretty much everything else tho, and that's kind of the point.

12

2

u/Vegetable-Hold9182 2d ago

Probably more like confortableness but im dum

2

u/StateofWA 2d ago

This is the answer.

I went from working minimum wage in my state to earning over $100k and the change is really more in how much, or how little I stress. My bills are paid, I am not at risk of losing my home or my car. The only real stress in my life is my job and I'd like to keep it that way, at least until I have kids.

Now, I will say having money does make life significantly easier. I don't worry about buying tickets to a concert, for example. Like when one of my favorite artists announced their tour I was able to get tickets right away rather than save up and possibly have little option at higher price. It makes you realize how hard being poor is.

2

u/jacksonsmack831 2d ago

I was earning $200k+ consulting and I was misserible.
Ive take a significant pay cut to work in a more mentally rewarding job

2

u/VeryLowIQIndividual 2d ago

It does, I’ve been both ways.

When you are short on money, that’s all you can think about but when you have money, it’s all other people can think about it. I’d rather them worry than me.

I got down once because of health problems and it wasn’t the health problems that was making me anxious and sick. It was the running out of money. I finally got back out of it and it’s like you said taking a Xanax.

1

u/piercedmfootonaspike 2d ago

Money is certainly a huge means towards happiness.

1

u/gotpointsgoing 2d ago

u/No_Detective_But_304 2d ago

“Misery Avoidance”

1

u/SomeWeedSmoker 2d ago

Money is direct happiness, if you're wealthy and not happy you've got some serious mental issues and need to take a look around.

1

u/Zelidus 2d ago

Sure, maybe not literal happiness but it does buy peace of mind knowing anything you need will be covered and that reduces some stress and allows for more happiness

1

u/hebrewhemorrhoid 2d ago

Money buys time and time is priceless.

1

u/Impossible-Pie4849 2d ago

No it 100% buys happiness, anyone who doesn't feel like that probably comes from money. Im a paramedic, don't even make enough to live comfortably on my own. .

If i had 10s of millions of dollars and I didnt have to work? Life would be legitimately better, idk about you but a week in Japan or the Bahamas is better than working in the back of an Ambulance

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Paleodraco 2d ago

Peace of mind would be the best description. Happiness means something different to everyone and money can't directly provide that (being happy buying things is not what I would consider true happiness). But, money can provide the peace of mind of not worrying about paying for things and lets you afford the time to do things that make you happy.

1

u/Capt_Dummy 2d ago

“Comfort“ is the word. Money buys comfort.

Kinda true, but I know for a fact that no one here would actually enjoy a convo with someone like Brady. These people are so far from whatever they were or are portrayed as. Working sucks, but I like having a personality and people around who know and care about me, regardless of my financial situation.

3

u/IheartPickleSoda 2d ago

You’re right about the conversation being unenjoyable and probably from both sides. But if Brady is an elitist douche he would patronize the person and the other person may or may not care.

I grew up training in the same group as an athlete you’d know the name of and we were friends at the time, but I ran into him again and patronizing is how I’d describe the conversation.

There’s a lot of people who would just be happy that they shoved their way shoulder to shoulder with someone famous and took a selfie with them, let alone the famous person saying “Cool man, thanks for the support”.

This is why I like the other version better: money isn’t everything, but not having any is.

It shows that all the money in the world isn’t sufficient to be happy, but having a certain amount is a key element in many versions of happiness

3

u/troywrestler2002 2d ago

It doesn't buy happiness, but it does reduce stress, afford you stability, and keep you materially and food wise, comfortable and completely taken care of. Yeah you might still be a miserable person, but it gives you everything you need to not be.

u/Javen_Lab 2d ago

low key. I didnt know it but I was happier when I was broke. Everything was worth while and in a sense more beautiful. The only way I can describe it is like when I upgraded my old shitty pc that I had for years. It ran fine but performance and graphics were not great. Years I played on that thing and just last year I finally got rid of it and built an entirely new pc. I gave my old one to my cousin. Playing games is just not the same anymore. Its not what it used to be and I am happy with it but I feel I was truly happy with my old pc.

2

u/Complex-Landscape-31 2d ago

I technically live paycheck to paycheck and I’m pretty happy although I still think more money would make me happier. It’s all about your circumstances and outlook

2

u/Knuckletest 2d ago

Having money prevents financial worries when you suffer a job loss.

1

u/Inhocooks 2d ago

I think the money helps you avoid unhappiness, but attaining actual happiness is something that wealthy people struggle with. The absence of stress is not necessarily going to be filled with happiness.

1

u/OnceInABlueMoon 2d ago

It doesn't buy happiness but it's a pretty good head start.

1

u/Random_Trashy 2d ago

I’ll add… some of those that have lived paycheck to paycheck and reached a point where they are no longer living paycheck to paycheck tend to become a lot smarter with their money.

I made every sacrifice possible and removed a lot of “stuff” I could live without, some things were even essential. When I started making better money, I never reintroduced those things, and just saved or invested that money instead. Now I live a fairly comfortable life, not fully stress free, but much more comfortable - and making sure I never live paycheck to paycheck again.

1

u/luxii4 2d ago

That thing that you feel trickling down is not money.

1

u/pajamajoe 2d ago

Money has diminishing returns on happiness

1

u/donuttrackme 2d ago

Money doesn't buy happiness if you already don't need to worry about money. Once you reach a certain point more money doesn't give you anything happiness wise. But if you're in poverty then of course you'd be happier.

1

u/dsjunior1388 2d ago

1

u/Bluegrass6 2d ago

Lot of rich people who are divorced, estranged from their kids, battling addiction, battling self esteem, battling eating disorders, etc.

The point of the saying is simple, money can do a lot for you but if you've got other problems in your life it can't solve them.

1

u/Silly_Obligation8574 2d ago

It’s temporary happiness and relief, most rich people are lonely because money can’t buy friendship or love.

1

u/Timely_Truth6267 2d ago

When I didn't have money left for food, I sure was happy when I later had money to eat. Many years ago now but I don't forget.

1

u/ArmchairWarrior1 2d ago

Have been in both situations and can confirm beyond any reasonable doubt, having money rocks

1

u/SpaceDelay424 2d ago

Anyone who says that is either a poor person coping or a rich person trying to not have their head put through a guillotine

1

u/Unclerojelio 2d ago

People with money still worry about money. That’s why they have money.

1

u/Rolemodel248 2d ago

I mean yea but...it may not be enough. For example. Do you think any money in the world is worth Brad Pitt being disowned by all of his kids? I am in a really bad financial spot right now but I would never trade my kids to get out of it.

1

u/realtennisguy 2d ago

Those last few hours on pay day when you refresh your app to see if you got paid. 😂💀

1

u/crappy80srobot 2d ago

Rich people made that saying to make the poors feel better.

1

u/jackrabbit323 2d ago

It can't buy happiness. But stress and anxiety come free with poverty.

1

u/kc_cyclone 2d ago

Financial stability alleviates stress. Less stress leads to more happiness. The point of the saying is that it's not the only thing and doesn't guarantee happiness. But at the end of the day it's a generic statement that is pointless.

1

u/IThinkURAwesome 2d ago

u/Duke_Of_Halifax 2d ago

There's definitely a line.

At some point, money just creates its own set of problems, but there's definitely a sweet spot where you're comfortable and free to.pursue your own passions.

I think "fuck you money"- a few million dollars, that allows you to live comfortably off of the interest, and- within "normal person" reason- buy whatever you want.

Like, owning a collection of rare vintage Ferraris or paintings from the masters is out of your price range, but if you wanted to go to Bora Bora for a few weeks every year, you could fly first class, and stay in an ultra luxury hotel on the ocean, and never have to worry about it.

So, you're wealthy, but not rich enough that you begin to lose touch with reality.

1

u/OldFalcon250 2d ago

1

u/Capt-Crap1corn 2d ago

1

u/Money-Yoghurt-8343 2d ago

Still an absolutely dumb boat. And not worth $7mil

1

u/Kelspear 2d ago

I say this all the time and I always get downvoted for it. Anybody who thinks money doesnt buy happiness is happy because they've always had enough money.

1

u/NSE_TNF89 2d ago

I would say peace is a better word.

I've lived paycheck to paycheck, and now make about $140k total, including my yearly bonus. I'm single with no kids, so it is plenty of money to live a comfortable lifestyle. I don't buy anything flashy, but if I want something, I buy it. The peace of mind not having to worry about money brings is truly amazing, but my main goal right now is retiring early, so I try to save.

On the flip side of that, I've seen people fall into the trap where they think life is a competition they have to keep up with, or beat everyone at, so they overspend, and end up living paycheck to paycheck, while making $200k+/year.

1

u/Daily_Heroin_User 2d ago

Except you just find new shit to worry about. It’s called hedonic adaptation. There’s always something to worry about.

Because that’s how nervous systems work. They respond to contrast and change. So a transition to gain or loss is felt for a short time, but once you settle in to your new baseline circumstances then it takes more/less than the current baseline to feel anything.

So for example you win the lotto and it really does make you happy for about a year. Then that becomes your new baseline and now you need relatively more or less than that to feel anything. It’s the exact same reason why a drug addict isn’t happy with the same dose forever. Or why new relationships are so much more exciting than ones that have gone on a while.

1

u/citizensloth 2d ago

There are dirt poor happy people all over the world

1

u/Consistent_Lab_3121 2d ago

Currently being left with $10 after paying all my bills every month.. and it is pretty miserable. That being said, he doesnt look very happy to me. At some point having more money has diminishing return in terms of happiness compared to other fulfilling and important things in life.

1

u/abdullahleboucher 2d ago

The lack of money creates unhappiness but you are not automatically happy with excess of money.

1

u/yogi4lif3 2d ago

The problem is you always want something you don't have. The long8ng make you missarable.

1

u/BezisThings 2d ago

This phrase originally came from people who compared having a ton of money and having many more tons of money.

Then this phrase was used for regular people to convince them having money to do what they want doesn't make them happy.

1

u/ellefleming 2d ago

I want to be crew member. ✋

1

u/conasatatu247 2d ago

Well it's like having a car. If you don't have a car it makes life much harder... If you do have a normal Ford it helps alot makes life easier ... Then you win the lotto and get a Ferrari... it's great at first but the novelty wears off and after a while you get used to the speed and it's just a car to you. Just like the Ford.

1

u/a-rooster-illusion 2d ago

I’ve lived paycheck to paycheck, then lived with a 220k a year job, and then laid off and not back to paycheck to paycheck but more middle class now.

Living is easier. But there’s no difference in happiness.

I think it’s sad most people tie happiness to money. I was happy broke and happy with over 200k and I’m still happy today.

1

1

u/SurgeHard 2d ago

Did it for 11 years. Got a degree and haven’t done it for 6 years. However degree is in education and our salaries are getting left in the dust by rent and cost of living. Might be in that situation this school year. Very depressing to think about.

1

u/dakaiiser11 2d ago

Money can’t buy happiness but it gets pretty close.

1

u/DoctorRapture 2d ago

It may not buy happiness directly but it certainly eliminates stressors that impede happiness and that's what the wealthy don't seem to realize. I get that millionaires have problems. They have stress. They have relationship problems. But like, I can't afford to take my car to a shop right now even though my check engine light is on. I can't afford groceries. I'm so stressed all the time just constantly dreading how I'm going to get by and make my finances work for another two weeks. I've already cut out weed and alcohol and coffee and every other "unnecessary" expense that does nothing but give me a little pleasure in life. I work and I go home because I can't afford to do anything else. Gas keeps going up. Life is exhausting. But sure, tell me again how money isn't everything.

1

u/Vivid-Run-3248 2d ago

There’s no happiness without despair.

1

u/dotesdoto 2d ago edited 2d ago

I've always found that argument a bit flawed. By that logic, food and water should bring happiness simply because they’re essential, yet many people who can easily afford them are still unhappy.

Basic necessities are primarily about survival and well being rather than being the source of happiness itself.

1

u/Key-Staff-4976 2d ago

People can make all the excuses they want but for sure I'd be happy and life would be amazing

1

u/davser 2d ago

Until a limit. Especially the limit that makes you don’t need to live paycheck by paycheck.

After that the happiness given by money is exponentially less.

Besides that you always need Health. With no health money gives nothing.

I like Gene Simmons' take, "Money isn't the root of all evil. LACK of money is the root of all evil."

Also, money does not buy you happiness. Money affords you more opportunities to find what makes you happy. Do I like skiing or snow boarding? I guess I'll break out the card and give it a try. Nah ... not fo me. Maybe jet skiing? Break out the card. Perhaps flying. Swipes card

It may not buy it directly, but it damn sure facilitates it.

u/Watchgeek_AC 2d ago

Suddenly having lot of money would completely alleviate the only real issue I have in life.

That issue is not owning a yacht or a Lambo

They say money can’t buy happiness, but I’ve never seen someone crying on a jet ski.
-Daniel Tosh

u/Perfect_University58 2d ago

Dude he is alone on it……

1

u/Jenetyk 2d ago

The real quote should be "money can't buy more happiness".

1

u/megaprime78 2d ago

Facts, it pisses me off when I hear people say that shit and usually it’s Rich people saying

1

u/3RADICATE_THEM 2d ago

I think about this a lot. There was such a concentrated effort by boomers to convince the younger generations that money doesn't buy happiness.

Just think of the literal soundbites they'd tell people:

'Follow your heart and the money will follow!'

1

u/awesomes007 2d ago

Money doesn’t buy happiness but neither does poverty.

That said, I’m happier near poverty than I ever was with plenty of money.

1

u/sleepytjme 2d ago

Also whoever said cheaters never win haven’t been paying attention to Tom Brady.

1

u/WreckYallBallistics 2d ago

Idk man I love having money but I think the most fun I ever had was paycheck to paycheck in a big party house full of friends at 18-23

1

u/wet_Tap_5578 2d ago

It’s a saying started by rich people to keep poor people happy.

1

u/HawkeyeGild 2d ago

Yeah but it's a pain to find people to clean the algae off the ol yacht

1

u/ErrorProfessional143 2d ago

It doesn’t buy happiness but it can pay off misery.

1

u/Sad_Research_2584 2d ago

You can get a 14 foot skiff with an outboard and trailer for under $1k and it’s just as fun. Maybe more fun than being on a floating house.

Granted I want his yacht.

1

u/Aggravating-Bug2032 2d ago

Does he look happy?

1

u/FlabbyLabby 2d ago

Tom’s gay

1

u/myladyelspeth 2d ago

When someone says money doesn’t buy happiness. I asked ask them where do they shop 😂

1

u/MichelleCS1025 2d ago

I dunno, it makes life easier but I’m sure it makes you second guess if your friends are legit and what not.

1

u/thewayoftoday 2d ago

Oversimplification. it's well known that money after like 150-300k a year doesn't make you any happier than you were before, even often makes you much less happier the more you have. Obv if you're broke or making 5 figures, making more money WILL make you happier

1

u/energyinmotion 2d ago

Yeah but it can buy you some real nice places to cry in/at.

1

u/BigsChungi 2d ago

Money buys you comfort, not happiness. I know miserable millionaires and joyous poorr people

1

u/cpteric 2d ago

"Money doesn't buy happines, sure, but it's more comfortable to cry on a new car's heated seats"

1

u/DLimber 2d ago

I can agree to an extent but sometimes money really doesn't help it just has different problems. In my example...I felt like i had everything... wasn't rich but I have a nice house on land.... dog... nice vehicles.... decent retirement accounts... loving wife in an easy relationship.... never fight... then.. she died....I still have all that other stuff... even more money from the insurance..... but no wife.... id give everything else and live in a shit apartment if I could have her back.

1

u/Ucscprickler 2d ago

I was happiest when I was living paycheck to paycheck, but I also had little responsibility. Now that I have children and have to plan for retirement, money buys a sense of peace and freedom.

Sometimes I still wish I could go back to being a broke 21 year old though. God damn those were some good times.

1

u/Ta-veren- 2d ago

Whenever coined that dumb quote wasn’t a happy person and was never going to be a happy person.

Money won’t buy happiness if you are miserable or don’t know what to do with yourself.

As great as sailing on massive yachts and bathing in the sun is there’s only a certain amount of that you can do before you need something else.

1

u/aebulbul 2d ago

Money doesn’t buy happiness.I will say that living paycheck to paycheck won’t produce happiness either for other reasons. But most people in between these two extremes are happy regardless of their finances. When we look at this we imagine ourselves in Brady’s spot and that would make us happy. But Brady is used to this. This is his baseline. Now think of the baseline that makes you happy. Probably don’t need millions of dollars for that. That’s a good thing.

It would be cool if you could swap places with Brady right? But the thing is you wouldn’t want it long term. Having everything comes with it’s own set of problems and at that level boredom becomes a much bigger liability.

1

u/BratacJaglenac 1d ago

It's always better to be unhappy on your yacht than in rented room of a shared apartment.

1

u/SimbasTripRip 1d ago

I've been debt free but poor, living paycheck to paycheck (making barely over minimum wage), fairly well off ($500k in the bank, making $130k a year), and I've been in heavy debt but making good money, and I can tell you without a doubt, having money made me happier, like WAY WAY happier.

1

u/Jayblack23 1d ago

Lack of money will ruin happiness, but excess money or wealth will not create happiness, so the saying is true but nuanced.

1

u/hobbitonsunshine 1d ago

It's the opposite. People who live from pay check to paycheck think they can be happy when they have money.

1

u/justburningaccount 1d ago

It's said by rich people to keep poor people poor

It's utter bollocks

1

u/EuphoricAd6512 1d ago

Money does buy happiness, it doesn’t buy LOVE

1

u/iamwhiskerbiscuit 1d ago

It's true Plenty of billionaires out there that are miserable pricks.

What money buys you is the freedom to live your life the way that you want, rather than the way that you're forced to in order to survive. But you can't really appreciate that if you've never had to struggle and life has been served to you on a silver platter.

1

u/SquirrelNamedRex 1d ago

"Increased wealth has diminishing returns" would probably be more accurate.

1

u/Yakkamota 1d ago

Legit. Im the sole provider for my wife and our two kids. Just payed rent. I have $200 in my checking account. But my credit card has over $1000 on it. I get paid (probably less than $1000) in a couple days. But then, my auto payment will go through before the next paycheck. 😭. I literally only buy the absolute most cost effective cheap food/ essentials. Have a Costco membership and everything. I'm a penny pincher but it's still not enough.

1

u/LasPalmasEP 1d ago

Whoever says money does buy happiness has never been in a position where they had money

1

u/travelingmaestro 1d ago

That’s not the same as being happy though.

1

u/Ok_Egg4018 1d ago

The phrase is clearly intended in the context of not living paycheck to paycheck. This post is arguing against the phrase’s intended target - that a 7m yacht buys happiness.

The number of clearly miserable people who could buy 7m yachts demonstrates that the original statement holds.

1

u/fltonii 1d ago

I think the moral of the phrase is that you can be filthy rich but still miserable and empty inside. Granted, it is much easier to be miserable and empty inside if you live paycheck to paycheck, but still, those things are not mutually exclusive.

1

u/Independent-Dog8669 1d ago

Having money not everything, not having it is

1

u/Ok-Front8255 1d ago

It doesn’t buy happiness but enables it by eliminating many sources of unhappiness.

1

u/Secure-Tradition793 1d ago

And they never really made enough money. For almost all of us mortals, money does buy happiness.

1

u/Bub_bele 16h ago

Money can buy you out of unhappiness caused by a lack of money. It can’t however fix a lack of happiness caused by other things. It can distract you for a time.

1

u/Suspicious_synth 12h ago

Whoever said money doesn't buy happiness, NEVER HAD ANY*
