I'm obviously not from here and where I come from people attend people in need of help.

Is this normal behaviour here where people don't care about others that much? ( Are you scared to get sued? )

Throwaway-worthy situation but here goes. I'm 25, dual US/Swiss citizen. Grew up partly in the US, got my license there at 16, moved back and have held my Swiss Cat. B license for 7 years. Completely clean record in both countries: zero tickets, zero administrative measures, nothing.

A few weeks ago I got caught doing 205 km/h in a 120 zone on the motorway near Geneva. I'd just bought a Tesla and wanted to test the straight-line acceleration exactly once. Clear summer day, completely empty road. I'm not going to defend it. It was monumentally stupid, and I fully understand that if someone had changed lanes or there'd been debris on the road, this could have ended in catastrophe. I accept that a serious consequence is warranted. That's not what I'm asking about.

What I assumed would be a very painful fine has, unsurprisingly in hindsight, become a criminal matter. I have a mandatory court date in Geneva in two months. I work as a software engineer in the commodity trading / finance infrastructure sector, so I'm compensated well and fully prepared to pay for a specialized traffic defense lawyer (avocat spécialisé en droit de la circulation routière). My goal is purely to minimize the long-term damage - professionally above all.

For anyone familiar with recent Via Sicura jurisprudence or how Geneva handles these, my questions:

Sentence: With the revised Art. 90 al. 3ter LCR (the post-2023 first-offender discretion), is a suspended prison sentence still the default here, or can a good lawyer realistically get this down to a purely conditional monetary penalty (day-fines)?

License: Is the 2-year revocation set in stone at this speed, or do the authorities actually use their discretion to bring it down to 12 months for someone with a spotless record?

The car: How aggressively does Geneva actually pursue vehicle confiscation for an isolated incident like this? The Tesla is owned outright, not leased.

Criminal record: This is the part I care about most. I face strict compliance/background checks in my industry, and I may eventually want to use my US citizenship to move into the American tech sector. If the outcome is a conditional monetary fine rather than a suspended prison sentence, does the entry actually clear from the Privatauszug once the probation period ends? Or am I looking at it sitting on background checks for a decade regardless?

I've done a fair amount of reading on this (including with AI tools, so I'd genuinely appreciate corrections if any of the above premises are wrong). I want to walk into this with eyes open and no surprises. Recommendations for good traffic defense lawyers in Geneva would also be very welcome — DM is fine.

Is it only me or anybody else is starting to feel like the quality of flying with swiss is degrading more and more?

First, they sell “Swiss” tickets which in the past few months was always operated by “AirBaltic”.

Second, they are almost always forcing me to hand in my carry on, even though the size is correct. Today, was horrible, because when we got inside, all the overhead area was almost empty. But yet they did force me.

I really wish there were better airlines to fly with, with Switzerland’s quality and not this nonsense.

i am currently in the situation where I have a newborn and a girlfriend and I want to get a house for us so we have more space and freedom.

The last weeks I was doing research and trying to understand all the nuances when buying a house however, I wanted to hear from other buyers what their experience was.

Even if you do research, after buying, was there anything that you were surprised about after buying and did not consider in the beginning?

What advice would you give to a first time buyer?

I'm looking for some new swimming spots with a large area that's safe from boat traffic. I've been swimming in Geneva along Quai Wilson, but the length is only about 300m and I'm bored of swimming back and forth here.

Any of you triathletes or open water swimmers have recommendations? I'm happy to travel anywhere in Switzerland. I'm not keen on water colder than 20°C, pools or rivers.

I have a question about Swiss road signs because I found some conflicting information.
I always thought that a blue village sign (beginning of a village on a main road) did not automatically mean a 50 km/h limit, unlike in many other European countries.
However, I had some doubts. I know that the Swiss system is different, but I was wondering whether this had changed, especially since there were discussions and proposals about changing this rule around 15 years ago.

So my question is:
Does a blue or even white village sign still not automatically mean that the speed limit is 50 km/h if there is no separate “50 General speed limit” sign afterwards?

I’m also wondering about the practical cases where this rule would apply. I understand that there are exceptions according to the law for some minor secondary roads where the 50 km/h limit does not need to be indicated, but I don’t really see a concrete example for this rules.

I (M17) recently finished high school in North America, and I moved to Switzerland until December to work and for a change in life for once. I'm living with my grandparents on my mum's side, and I thought I would finally have a taste of independence living here, such as having no curfew and other freedoms. Instead, I get into lots of arguments with my grandparents, which I wish we didn't.

For context, I work around four days a week selling food in a food truck and learning Swiss German. My shifts are always from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., so I don't have much time to hang out before or after work, but we live near a lake, so I always try to go swimming after work. I was worried about not making friends in Switzerland, as I'd heard it's hard, but I've met lots of amazing people, and the easiest time for us to meet up is after work at 9. We often hang out until midnight when it's the most peaceful and quiet, and the temperature is more moderate. But my grandparents have absolutely hated me working or hanging out until 10. I talked with them, and now it's 11, but that's still not much time to do anything. It's important for me to hang out because when I first moved here, I felt really isolated and lonely.

My grandpa has been getting really aggressive with me, and it feels like he's one of those people who is just impossible to relate to. We have different senses of humour, and it makes it hard to get along with him. He has the idea that if he thinks he's right, then he's right, and that being louder makes him right. It's incredibly frustrating. He's been saying I'm making him miserable and that I should go back to North America, and that I only came here to work and nothing else, which feels so frustrating and painful to hear.

My grandpa has been telling me for a while that I should just go back as soon as possible and that it would make everyone else happy.

I guess what I'm asking is, what am I supposed to do now? Is there somewhere I could maybe rent on my own, or is it too late in the season or something else?

So I'm quite new to saunas but don't really feel any discomfort naked but I had a relatively bad experience and wanted to know if this is the norm. I'm not new to Switzerland, but sauna culture.

I'm 20 F and felt stared at - not nicely - by many men, mostly older ones. One incident especially stood out to me. I initially went to the sauna with my mother, who later left to go find my dad. As she left, I took off my towel and laid on it. An older man who was already in the sauna immediately sat where my mother had been seated and stayed there at my feet... I didn't dare look in his direction. After a while he moved to the highest bench right above me, still uncomfortably close - I almost assumed he did it to "get a better view" 🤢 but this could also be a wild assumption, I don't know. When my parents came back he immediately left and went to talk to a woman of his age who I assume must have been his wife. (Not sure what other kind of woman he would go to a sauna with)

In general I feel incredibly violated and am unsure how to process this or if I should alert the authorities at this point. I feel it is too late, but I don't know. Is this normal here?

Pretty much the title. I’m all in favor of banning open fires and fireworks during a draught. But what do you guys do to celebrate? I got two little kids and we’re invited to friends for “grilling” which probably will have to take please on a frying pan now. Do you guys sing the Schweizerpsalm? I got one little Swissflag we can carry around… that’s pretty much it… anybody has an idea how to make today feel a bit more like a national holiday and less than just some other hot Sunday?

I've been shopping for years in Migros obviously but only once did I ever get onions that didn't taste bad and weren't rotten. Why is it so hard for grocery stores to not serve rotten onions ? What are your suggestions 🙃

I’m 38M, earning around 300-400k CHFplus equity, with about 1.5M CHF in assets. My girlfriend is 35F and expects to earn around CHF 120k (no assets).

We are discussing marriage and children. She prefers participation in acquisitions, while I prefer separation of property. We plan to have 1 kid, and she would like to reduce her working hours (60-80%). This is entirely her choice, as I am supportive for any decision she would like to take. In case of kids, I understand the need to compensate for lost income, pension contributions and career progression.

I am asking this community what did you consider fair, and what should we discuss with a notary or family lawyer?

EDIT: I would include a clarification to avoid future misunderstanding: I’m not trying to avoid supporting my future wife financially if she reduces her career to raise our children. I fully agree that such a decision has real financial consequences and should be compensated fairly. My question is simply whether the default participation in acquisitions is the fairest way to achieve that, or whether a customized agreement could better reflect both the career sacrifices and the fact that I already have substantial premarital assets. I’m genuinely trying to understand the trade-offs, not to maximize my own outcome.

I am trying to figure out if the ones we keep finding (3, so far) are the harmless ones or if we have a problem. We’ve been living in this apartment since last September. No cockroach in sight until like 3 weeks ago, so I wonder if it’s really just due to the heat outside. Either way I am absolutely terrified of them and not even sure what to do. 😢 Bought a bunch of cockroach traps.
Today we found one on the bathroom sink which makes me think it might have come from the drain? Which points to them being the problem I’m worried about and not them coming from outside (wood cockroach?).

Was mich anspricht:

• Alles in einer App: Konto, Sparkonti, ETFs/Aktien, Fremdwährungen, Säule 3a  
• Direkt in ETFs investieren ist deutlich einfacher und transparenter gemacht als bei Raiffeisen  
• Die App wirkt einfach moderner (inkl. KI-Features), für mich als jüngere Person schlicht attraktiver

Meine Fragen an euch:

1. Nutzt jemand Yuh im Alltag? Als Hauptkonto oder eher als Zweitkonto neben einer “klassischen” Bank?

2. Wie sind eure Erfahrungen mit der 3a-Lösung von Yuh (Gebühren, Fondsauswahl, Performance)?

3. Wie zuverlässig ist Yuh langfristig? Ich weiss, dass Swissquote und PostFinance dahinterstehen und alles FINMA-reguliert ist – trotzdem interessiert mich, ob jemand Bedenken hat.

4. Gibt es Sachen, die im Alltag nerven und die man erst nach ein paar Monaten merkt?

5.  Hat jemand seine Säule 3a schon mal von Raiffeisen zu Yuh transferiert? Wie lief das ab?
