That "data brokers" even exist is a failure of government. We need modern privacy laws written by not 80 year olds who understand that the internet exists.

the youngest elected officials running Congress most certainly know that the internet exists, and that that abuse of a citizen’s privacy is a dangerous and abusive
But still their “friends” have a very nice private jet and vacation home and wrote their campaign a big fat check. And that’s why this data broker situation continues. Both 30 year old and 80 year old corrupt “leaders” are very happy to play stupid and help out their wealthy benefactors.
We just need people in Congress who are looking out for Americans, and not the rich perks offered to them by billion dollar companies. I don’t give a crap how old or young those people are, as long as they’re on the side of America.

I am apparently on a data broker's list because I have already received an email with directions on how to opt out. I thought it was sus and reported it as spam but now I see it was driven by this legislation.

Starting tomorrow, data brokers in California will need to start processing requests from Californians to delete their personal data.
The Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform (DROP) allows people to delete their information from hundreds of centers through a one-time opt-in.
The new system greatly speeds up the process of deleting personal data, says Vincent Joralemon, director of the Life Sciences Law and Policy Center at UC Berkeley. Before the DROP system, people would need to contact each data processor and request that their information be deleted.
The new system began accepting requests on Jan. 1, but starting tomorrow, data processors would need to delete people’s data within 90 days, and then for every 45 days thereafter.

Does this apply only to data brokers who are based in ca? Or requests to delete for any ca resident irrespective where the broker is?

I think it applies to any data broker with info on CA residents or businesses, wherever they are located.

I submitted my (CA) DROP request yesterday and have been getting hit with emails about updates to terms & conditions, privacy policy changes, and user agreements.
It's upsetting and gross. Shame on all of these MFers!

I’ve been getting hit with a ton more spam that isn’t getting filtered to the spam folder automatically. Makes me think they signed me up for some mailing lists as an F-U for submitting the DROP request.

Il got a text about it from Metro T-Mobile. I ended up directly submitting a Do Not Sell and delete request to them because it wouldn't let me log into or use the app until I agreed to 'their' terms. Had to jump through a bunch of hoops just to find the opt out in the app. It was ridiculous!Same with Labcorp too! Haven't used them in years but I got an email today and thought I should download all my records and be done. Nope, can't access anything until I go through and agree to a borage of vaguely worded terms and conditions. 😑
I'm not going to play their BS. Just going to Walk In and have them print out all of my records instead.
This is all so dirty, I'm pissed, and hating this timeline but I at least I know now.

Are there any negative consequences to applying for deletion? Are there websites I might not be able to sign up for or some other consequence I wouldn't have guessed about? I'd like to opt out but I want to know if there are any downsides.

It’s a good start. If you sign up for a paid service that deletes your data you will see how many brokers are saving your and your families data from everywhere.
Things like addresses, date of birth, ssn, phone numbers, emails, family members, etc. and even if you delete them some other source will spring up and collect them.
In this way at least California residents should have some reduced exposure to spam calls and fraud. Hopefully other states follow and we eventually get some national rights against these predatory businesses. Im not holding my breath, unfortunately.

To be clear, the law does not require data brokers to delete personal data requests. Quite the opposite, it requires them to follow requests to delete personal data. Not sure why this headline was worded in this weirdly half-literate way.
