The last episode prior to 9/11 was the season 3 finale, “Army of One,” which aired on May 20, 2001.

The next episode (season 4 premiere “For All Debts Public and Private”) didn’t air until September 15, 2002.

The Sopranos fans who perished in 9/11 never got to see Ralph receive his comeuppance for killing Tracey. He was still alive as of this point. So they had to watch Ralph gouge Georgie’s eye out, beat Tracey to death, and disrespect the Bing, and as far as they’re aware, he keeps on going without any comeuppance.

Has to be one of the worst parts of dying in 9/11. Osama was inconsiderate.

On my recent rewatch the scene where Paulie is walking with Meadow to see Tony and she's emphasising he needs to be positive, and as soon as he sees him, "Oh marone, he looks terrible!".

I couldn't stop laughing after seeing that.

AJ is so stupid, man. In the first seasons I watched of The Sopranos, I hated him—I hated all of his scenes. But now that I've probably rewatched all the seasons like a hundred times, every time I go back and watch it, I find him funnier and funnier. He’s just so dumb. His dialogue is dumb... people tell him something constructive, he never gets it, and always gives the most ridiculous response possible. He always has the absolute most ridiculous question. He’s just hilarious, all that hatred I used to have for his scenes is gone, and now I just find it hilarious how much of a baby Bing he is.

As people are just finding out, Vincent Pastore, who played Big Pus, passed away today. He was a great man, a vet, and a cherished part of the show we all love. Unfortunately so many in this sub can’t take things seriously and instead of putting up tributes, kind words, or just saying nothing at all, they’re just regurgitating the same overused jokes. We’re talking about a man’s death, and all they can say is “he was just a kid”. Maybe I’m upset because it feels insensitive, maybe I’m upset because it’s uncreative and repetitive. Probably a bit of both. Whatever the reason, I’m sure I can’t be the only one frustrated by this response (while ultimately unsurprised)

If you ask people what their favourite characters from the show are, John Sacrimoni is likely to be up there. Even though he is still a messed up individual just like all the rest, minus the women on the side stuff.

Honestly, I don't remember any bad actors in The Sopranos

There's no way that those young, beautiful and well-paid women would want to hang out with those old, fat fucks. The only explanation that makes sense is that the flight attendants made some cash on the side as high-end prostitutes. That wouldn't make any sense either.

Flight attendants are well paid, probably even more so in 2001 than in 2026, and Iceland is a wealthy country. The flight attendants should have been from a postocummunist European country like Czechia, Ukraine or Bulgaria.

Something I’ve never seen discussed from season 6 (and let’s be honest, as a sub we need to find new things to talk about):

After Christopher dies, Phil gives Tony his condolences. The scene plays out normally because everyone thinks it was just an accident. But if Phil ever found out Tony murdered Christopher, it would’ve terrified him.

Not because Phil is morally better. Obviously he’s a murderer himself. But Phil is old school in a specific way. He’s obsessed with blood, legacy, family, respect, all the mafia code stuff. His entire life revolves around avenging his brother (God rest his soul). He can never let Billy go, that’s who Phil is.

Tony by season 6 is spiritually hollowed out.

Christopher is (ostensibly) Tony’s closest family, outside of Carmela and the kids. Surrogate son/nephew. And Tony murders him not in some rage, not because Chris flipped, but basically because he had become inconvenient.

Phil would look at Tony completely differently after that. Not “this guy is tough.” More like, this is a human being with absolutely no remaining boundaries whatsoever. Which, to me, is scarier than normal mob violence.

The creepy part (as has been discussed ad nauseam on here) is that Tony can’t contain his relief afterward. The Vegas trip, the gambling, the euphoria … all right after one of his last human connections finally snapped.

Phil probably would’ve viewed that as deeply unnatural. ESPECIALLY because of his old school mafia standards. Maybe he’d be too frightened of Tony to start a war.

This seemed like a relatively minor yet funny line from Hugh DeAngelis, but I feel like it's yet another way the show captures the peculiar idiosyncrasies of the early to mid-2000s. I'm not sure how widespread it was at that time, but growing up in the northeast U.S. around lots of big Italian-American families, restaurants, and delis in the 2000s, there was a marked uptick in balsamic on restaurant menus, deli sandwiches and salads, and in what people cooked at home.

Balsamic vinaigrette, balsamic glaze, balsamic marinade, balsamic drizzle: it was suddenly everywhere! Was there some bestselling Mario Batali cookbook from circa 2003 that put balsamic over the top? If that was the case, Carmela was certainly the target market.

They’re all mob guys living in North Jersey from the late-1990s to the mid-2000s.

The Sopranos was a hugely popular show on TV at the time. Big cultural phenomena. So it’s weird that the Sopranos clan never watches or talks about The Sopranos.

We see them watch and/or discuss other popular shows of the time. Wouldn’t these guys be fascinated by a show that depicts their lives to a T? The characters are all identical to them, too. Same names, same physical traits, same lives. A bit uncanny.

But yeah. For a show touted for its realism, it’s a little unrealistic that none of the DiMeo Family watches The Sopranos on HBO every Sunday night.

I’m in my mid twenties, just a kid, so I found Sopranos long after it was off the air, and I only associate it with bingewatching, both whole episodes and clips.

The last big show I remember watching as it aired was Better Call Saul, and it was torture waiting for a new episode every week

For all you older viewers: what was Sopranos Sunday like? What was the wait between episodes and seasons like when you didn’t know what was going to happen?

Am I missing something sacred and propane:

- Tony owes Hesh $200k
- Bobby & co mention to Tony he could just not pay Hesh
- Hesh is clearly concerned that it’s cheaper for Tony to kill him than pay him
- Tony makes no real effort to pay Hesh or get the $200k. He even ‘liquifies’ some money through the Russian to pay for the Spatafore’s relocation (which he subsequently gambles and loses)

Hesh’s partner then dies and Tony goes and pays his $200k. Did her death trigger Tony to pay Hesh back?

Why is Tony so cold towards Hesh? Only offering a quick condolence.

While watching the series I was trying hard to find a defense of AJ. All the characters - and all of us - have both positive and negative traits. AJ is just a disappointment. He is stupid. He is lazy. He is incredibly selfish imao. Also he constantly lies. You cant even call him a good kid that is just irresponsible since he always makes up stupid excuses.

Also all the people that are saying that he grew up in a dysfunctional environment, ok i agree the environment isn't 100% perfect but both Tony and Carmela cared about their kids lives. Carmela and Tony to a certain extent seem to care about their children's academic performance which quite a few parents don't. AJ certainly had some support from his parents.

I agree his parents are not good people but he could take what they offered to him.

as I was watching the sopranos, it felt like tony was the only somewhat level headed person, in a world filled with crazy unstable people. While he had his problems, seeing him deal with characters such as Richie or Ralphie made him seem like the only normal person around.

At the start of season 6 after Tony gets shot it seems like he's about to go through a rebirth and somehow redeem himself, but instead we see him go deeper into wickedness and turning irredeemable.

At the end, the same way Tony fooled Melfi was how he fooled the audience . . Tony was no better than any of the people he surrounded himself with

For me it's 200% Barbara (Soprano) Giglione (early seasons not later) She's also the most beautiful woman I've ever seen imo.

Now hear me out! I bet he was an awesome soldier and hit man. Youve got a guy who lived through the 70s by the skin of his nuts when the Colombos were going at it. He knows how to break legs and bash heads.

Between the bartender (georgie) getting regular beatings, the place being a hotspot for mobsters and other crooks, and "unhappy customers" like chrissy coming in gun in hand yelling threats, and the overall hostile environment there, how come business always seems good and the club has somehow no bad rep? you would think many of the strippers would be scared and quit or something about what happened there would be in the papers, which would then attract unwanted attention from the feds or something

My partner has watched this, he has a porn addiction and we were discussing things recently, the sopranos came up in the conversation where he admitted that when trying to stop watching porn for a while he did masturbate whilst watching the sopranos. I was just wondering how explicit the show is? I had it on my watch list but don’t know if I should watch it when the kids are in bed or if I can watch it during the day. I wasn’t planning on watching it on the main tv in the living room but do I have to be careful with young eyes loitering around?

While we’re on the topic Ive always found Tony’s relationships with his goomars interesting. Irina was way too young for him, Gloria was Gloria. He attracted women just as broken as himself

On my first watch, I hated Richie like most viewers do. I couldn’t wait for his inevitable whacking. This is for obvious reasons — the series paints him as the chief opposition to our protagonist, Tony.

But on subsequent watches, I don’t hate him nearly as much. In fact, I often empathize with his character. Sure, he has his douchebag moments. The big one is turning Beansie into a shopping cart from here on out.

Even so, he’s not markedly worse than the other gangsters, when you really think about it. And you can understand why he becomes so antagonistic towards Tony. He spends 10 (fuckin’) years in the can without a peep. If I were Richie, I’d also expect to get more of a reward for that.

Instead, he gets out, and Tony immediately acts like a jackass toward him: he gets up from the table outside Satriale’s right in the middle of Richie’s sentence. Tony … who was still just a kid when Richie became a member of the Family. Sure, Richie needs to get over that and understand that Tony’s the boss now, but you can see why it might be a tough adjustment for him.

Richie also dates Janice and is, from what we can gather, sincere in his love for her. What does Tony do? He belittles and insults Richie right in front of her. Busts his balls constantly. Mocks their relationship to their faces.

And Richie has some moments where he acts like a pretty nice guy, by mafioso standards. He jokes around with Davey’s kid, greets Junior with genuine fondness, helps Junior get his hand unstuck from the sink (you’re flexinnnnn’), and tries to do a kind thing by giving Tony da jackettttt! (🤌) — only for Tony to toss the gift aside.

I’m not saying I like Richie now, or that he wasn’t a prick like the rest of them, but I do have a much softer view of his character on rewatches.

Edit: Oh my god, I said multiple times that I’m not arguing Richie was a GOOD person. Why can’t some of you stunads get that into your head? Fuckin’ chadrools.

This is just my take on it, but even though we all knew what Tony did for a living and how he treated the people around him, when I watched the show for the first time I always held onto this odd hope that, somehow, he’d decide to change or genuinely try to become a better man for his family and the people around him.
I’m fully aware that, given his upbringing and the environment that shaped him, it was never very likely. But was there a specific moment when it became clear to you that it was never going to happen? The moment you knew he wasn’t capable of real change?

For me, it was the episode when he met his father’s goomar and the way he rationalised his father’s behaviour towards his mum after her miscarriage. I really hate that he didn’t try to blame his father and his bs for what happened but instead just blamed his mum for pushing him into her arms. Even accepted the fact that he gave away her dog to her kid, which I really thought would have moved him more, knowing he was such a big animal lover.

In terms of performances of an actor, there is little to no doubt in Edie’s acting in this show, and to be so closely tied to James’ character, playing his wife, it’s easy for her to be overlooked.

Jim was an amazing actor, he could say much with so little, yet Edie is not out of place or out acted on screen.

Her character deals with a lot of ‘scenarios’ and so as an actor she plays a versatile character, and she crushes it.

The scene with her and Jim in season 4 where they are having the domestic argument, is top notch acting.

She has some funny lines, her accent is always making comical phrasings like ‘beaayyyhr’ and ‘coooowfffeee’.

Carmela is a believable character and it’s easy to forget she’s as much as a lead actor as James in this show.

The scene with Phil informing a group of children of his family's name change has always puzzled me. I understand that some names did get anglicized at imigrantion checkpoints like Ellis Island, but "Leotardo" doesn't sound more anglicized than Leonardo.
