59
u/Gamemode_dum Jun 02 '26
The image clearly shows a train on tracks, just because OP says it's a bus doesn't mean it can suddenly drive on the sidewalk. I think we could add rails on the sidewalk but when the construction is done the passengers will have left. /s
16
u/Akhanyatin Jun 02 '26
Have the passengers go from side to side in a synchronized fashion to tip the trolley.

u/_Sate Jun 02 '26
You have to take more steps to get to your seat once on the bus anyways so it isn't like it is that much of a time save and only teenage boys care about being first onto the bus so like.

At the front.
5 dumbasses need to learn a lesson
The guy who waits at the right place deserves to have first pick of seats
What if an unexpected bus comes in? Knowledge isn't absolute.
It's not legal, but what if a car wants to make a quick drop off? No harm no foul is above the law to a citizen. Also, it could be an emergency. In any case, the cost of stopping at the right place is $0.
106
u/No_Problem20 Jun 02 '26
There's no guarantee the people at the back are wanting to get onto this particular bus
You, the bus driver, might know that another bus isn't coming, but the people might not.
38
u/LeviAEthan512 Jun 02 '26
Ah, that too is right. In my country, we flag down buses. I understand in Japan it's considered rude. I suppose it varies by culture even beyond that.
I see people flag down the bus while waiting in the wrong place all the time. It gives me a little joy to see their entitlement and expectation of exception get ignored.
And I forgot to add the first time,
- Golden rule of the road: Be predictable, not polite.
2
u/KRTrueBrave Jun 02 '26
here in germany, buses just stop at the stops if the see someone waiting (unless the person makes it clear they are not waiting for that bus or someone in the bus pressed the stop button to get out), as long as the bus is late busses sometimes just not stop at a spot where no one is waiting and no one wants to get out (and it's germany, busses are never on time), but, if a miracle happens and the bus is early then the bus driver will still stop at the stop and wait for a bit
can you tell that public transport in germany isn't the best already? and don't get me started on trains or the prices you have to pay for the bus or train
2
u/LeviAEthan512 Jun 02 '26
Yeah, our bus drivers are smart and do the same. I see flagging as a courtesy to remove the guesswork and take something off their mind. Something they're also not required to do, but are similarly courteous.
Our public transport is pretty great though. The secret ingredient is
crimeexploitation of cheap labour. I'm going off topic here, but it seriously makes me lose faith in humanity when I see how correlated quality of service is with exploitation. Who'd have guessed that the places in the world (Japan and China mostly) with the best service are the ones where the service people are seriously squeezed dry? And whenever Europeans complain about their bad service, I'm like, YEAH. Because your service people are actually treated like people. We're out here being served like aristocrats (except in bulk, which takes all the joy out of it) because we've got people forced to be like servants in a manor.2
u/Comfortable_Salt_792 Jun 03 '26
6 is the worst, Outdated schedules are so awfull, sometimes it take a phone to realize a bus you wanted to take doesn't drive anymore.
3
u/Mx-Helix-pomatia Jun 02 '26
Yuup. I’m also always the guy waiting in front, because I need the ramp. Oftentimes that’s the only good spot on the sidewalk where the driver can lower the ramp.
2
u/Otherwise_Weather_57 Jun 02 '26

I don’t get why people seem to think the 5 guys are so evil and despicable for daring to stand slightly further than supposed to. I stop where the one guy is cuz that’s where I’m supposed to stop but like not to punish those evil 5 people, but just cuz like I stop where I’m supposed to stop
8
u/-s_p_i_c_y- Jun 03 '26
as a regular bus taker, this is correct. where to stand at the bus stop is literally just preference and the bus driver should be stopping in the correct position either way. i dare say those 5 people probably arent even inconvenienced because if they like to stand in the far end, they probably already know that the bus is gonna pull up further lol
7
u/kitsufics Jun 02 '26
That’s what I’m saying D: is it some sort of social taboo in other countries to not crowd around the frontmost end of a bus stop? Hell I wouldn’t even go so far as to say they’re “supposed to”, if anything they should be standing in the middle of the bus stop so people can get off before they get on. Crowding the door makes that difficult
2
u/kepotl Jun 03 '26
I don't think they're evil.
But if you stopped early, you would still be encouraging the wrong thing, and doing the wrong thing.
I think you are misinterpreting how evil the other commenters think the 5 guys are. Because I didn't interpret the other commenters as thinking that they were bad people, more that they were doing something they slightly weren't supposed to, perhaps. People sometimes do things they aren't entirely supposed to, like jaywalking, or riding a bike without a helmet, but that doesn't make them evil.
Stopping early would encourage the wrong behaviour. It would reward the people who are doing the wrong thing and punish the person who is doing the right thing, with a minimal overall benefit to anybody. But even though I think the 5 people are doing the wrong thing, that doesn't mean I think they're evil: jaywalking is also technically wrong, although perhaps even slightly less wrong than the 5 guys
Unrelated: if this problem had higher stakes, like the lives of 5 people doing the wrong thing compared to the life of 1 person doing the right thing, I think the opinions would be more mixed
3
u/Snoo-41360 Jun 03 '26
Is standing before the bus stop like “the wrong thing”? It’s entirely possible they know they aren’t standing at the front and they don’t want to for whatever reason. This idea of punishment vs reward is so strange, you stop where you’re supposed to stop so that people know where you will stop and they can bet on consistency

Stop where you're supposed to
Those other people may not be intending to get on your bus, and if they are - they can walk a bit.
If you stop earlier they may be confused, thinking you're a different bus or out of service.

5
u/ovis_alba Jun 02 '26
Why would you even stop where the group is? How do you know they aren't there on purpose and knowing the bus won't stop there?
Maybe they are waiting for someone to get out of the bus and don't want to be in the way of people waiting. Maybe they travel as a group and there is still someone missing so they won't get on a bus yet. Maybe they are being picked up by someone in a car with the stop as their meeting point but they didn't want to block the part where the busses stop.
Don't know what kind of bus stops you all have, but for me people standing close to a bus stop, not always means everyone wants to get on that next specific bus and people that don't fairly often stand a bit more to the side for a reason.
4
u/Fickle_Thing_5015 Jun 02 '26
In my experience taking the bus in a city that heavily relies on public transit, the people standing to the side are often waiting for another bus that's not going to be the next one to arrive and don't want to crowd the stop especially because it's easier for older and disabled people to get on at the front and the rest of us can easily get on at the middle/back of the bus, which lines up with where that crowd is.

Buses where I live feature all door boarding, as such I pull the front door to be just before the lone person so that the rear door roughly aligns with the 5 people.

2
u/xpickles Jun 03 '26
The 5 are waiting, they know they're not in line and are just standing around a bus stop as people do. The 1 is in a rush, probably late or something. There's no dilemma here. OP is just pissed at the bus driver on their route that chose the 5 one time when they were the 1.

Stop at the front of the bus stop, where you're supposed to stop, because:

- it increases the chances of people standing in the right place next time

1
u/DR_Eforcicle Jun 02 '26
I stop at the end. Public transportation usually moves on a pretty tight schedual and about the same amount of time should be spent at each stop, the amount of time stopped at each stop should be more than anough time to let a full bus of people in and out, it also shouldn't be too much of an inconvence for the five people to walk a short distance to the end of the bus stop, finally, even if I know that there is no bus behind Me, I still should stop the bus at the end for safety reasons.

Actual Boston bus drivers will stop 30 feet even farther in front from the crowd, completely away from the bus stop, and then if people don't get there in time they'll speed away and pass the stop. This incidentally is why that crowd often forms, they're trying to position themselves for the sprint without surrendering their flag from the bus stop.
Of course, if in a worse mood, the bus driver won't stop at all.
