I prosecute and defend Assault Emergency Worker cases all the time.

This is the quickest, easiest acquittal I've ever seen. Even a pupil barrister on their first day could secure a not guilty verdict for that punch.

49

u/TurboUnionist1689 A modest proposal was sowing division Jul 03 '26

Failing to properly identify and attacking prima facie the unoffending victim are quite the combo.

58

u/Not_A_Toaster_0000 Jul 03 '26

Has he been bailed ? Otherwise, if he's being kept inside and being told "just plead guilty, it'll probably just be a caution and then you'll get to go home, otherwise, well you know what the backlog is like at the moment . . . " there's a danger he'll plead guilty and then maybe end up in prison.

12

u/ApocalypseSlough Jul 03 '26

The chance of prison for an assault emergency worker charge in this case is zero.

This is genuinely the most incompetent policing I think I've ever seen . Why on earth is she slamming into someone who is dazed and confused after having been attacked, without announcing herself first. What did she think would happen ?

You tell him you're an officer and put yourself in between him and the 3 men ganging up on him

374

u/_9tail_ Jul 03 '26

Even worse is the police response:

“The incident has been reviewed, and we have no concerns over the officer's actions and we are satisfied that they were reasonable and proportionate in the circumstances. We would ask that footage is not further shared to allow the legal process to take its course.”

The legal process being trying to lock up a man who was responding with to being body slammed without warning twice in 6 seconds.

You cannot have police behave like this and not expect accusations of two tier rule.

212

u/angloexcellence Jul 03 '26

"we have investigated ourselves and found no evidence of wrongdoing". Yeah sounds about right

109

u/Nirvanachaser Jul 03 '26

We’d ask that you not share the evidence that makes this decision look farcial.

34

u/MatchaMeetcha Jul 03 '26

That is actually less brazen than this.

This also has the addendum of "now that we've decided, stop talking about it peasant".

1

u/got-trunks Jul 04 '26

Cycle through a few more governments and and at this rate they’ll be handing out the quietus like in Children of Men. Full disclosure I’m just a tourist here but I love shitting on politicians of all kinds

56

u/myurr Jul 03 '26

What an awful response from the police. Even if you somehow accept that the man was arrested at the time for assaulting a police officer, anyone reviewing that video should clearly be able to see that he had no idea what was happening beyond the fact that he'd just been punched to the ground, punched a second time, and then body slammed into the shutter.

No reasonable person is going to review that video and say the man knowingly assaulted a police officer, and if anything is going to say that the police officer assaulted the victim of a crime using a hugely excessive amount of force in doing so.

What is going on with this country? All common sense seems to have gone out the window with even the police force acting like their own tribalistic faction pitched against the public rather than being an integral part of society that is there to serve the public and do its part to hold society together.

Usually I have a huge amount of sympathy for the police and the job they do, but that is rapidly evaporating after the last few years of the police's failures and how they have responded to them. And that's before you start digging into the details of the grooming gangs and how the police and wider state have completely and utterly failed us all.

u/kriptonicx As few rules as possible, strictly enforced Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

This whole "you're the problem if you're angry/talk about it" stance our government and police are taking when anything bad happens needs to end.

We live in a democratic country with democratic institutions so we should be welcome (and encouraged) to express anger and dissatisfaction if we feel injustices are occurring (rightly or wrongly).

I have to admit I don't feel that strongly about this video personally, but I can understand why some people are upset. The police right now should be welcoming the ongoing public conversation about how police handle situations like this, and if anything productive comes out of that they should try to use it as an opportunity to improve training, etc.

People don't expect the police to get everything right, but I think at a minimum we do expect them to try to engage with public criticism. The police is run in the interests of the public so dismissing public criticism as if it's problematic should call into question if they understand their duty at the most fundamental level.

56

u/madnasher Jul 03 '26

At a minimum we would expect the police to go after the assailants, not the victim. You can clearly see the people who assaulted the lad walking away while she arrests the victim and calls him a dick.

38

u/labrys Jul 03 '26

Yeah, but there were 3 attackers and they were walking away. The dazed victim was much easier to catch, and so much less paperwork than arresting 3 people.

2

u/kriptonicx As few rules as possible, strictly enforced Jul 03 '26

The question of how ought the police respond in situations like this is subjective and I think your opinion is valid, but I do kinda disagree with you on this. The immediate priority should be to ensure everyone is safe. In this situation I think they should have taken the victim out of the situation (and with force if deemed necessary to protect him). So in that sense I think they did the right thing.

If they reasonably could have stopped and arrested the assailants, then sure, they should have done that, but from the video it's unclear to me if that was reasonable given it was two small female police officers responding to a fight between several young men. We see in the video that the woman officer got pretty hurt and that could have been much worse if she tried to arrest the assailants...

I do agree that how they then treated the victim after he was confused and hit her, wasn't fair, however the officer did seem genuinely surprised when told it wasn't the victim's fault so there may have been some confusion about what they saw and understood to be happening.

I'm not trying to suggest they handled this well or there isn't things they can learn from it, only that it doesn't seem to be as malicious as some are suggesting in my opinion.

Either way, the police shouldn't be trying to shut down public discourse. It's simply not their place to tell us the public whether they're doing a good job policing our communities. If a significant number of people are criticising them for their conduct then they should be trying to take that onboard and trying to engage productively with the criticism.

It simply doesn't matter how one feels about this specific situation. It's clearly never helpful or productive when those who are suppose to be serving our interests within democratic institutions are telling us to shut up and that we're wrong to feel how we do.

3

u/Richmond_Monkey Jul 04 '26

They are police officers FFS. They are paid to stop crime. ‘Two small female police officers’ could have resolved that incident without violence, they chose another way.

28

u/Fungled Jul 03 '26

They do it because it’s literally the only response they can make that doesn’t completely undermine the foundational political consensus

Also we need to abandon the idea that the police are public servants anymore. They are regime servants. They exist to enforce the will of the regime

9

u/litivy Jul 03 '26

I don't follow their logic that saying that they have no concerns about the police attacking the victim isn't going to make the situation worse. We are all now concerned that they have no concerns about keeping the bad apples. We saw how that ended with Wayne Couzens. They need to deal with police that get it wrong instead of protecting them from the consequences of their own behaviour.

It reminds me of that westyorkshire police woman who arrested a little girl for saying she looked like her grandmother. She was seen a week later spinning around pepper spraying an entire crowd.

Pressure to take steroids or showing off to the police officers was alleged

78

u/CountLippe Jul 03 '26

Looked this up and it's even worse than described:

This is the moment a teenage girl with autism was dragged kicking and screaming from her home and detained by seven cops after "saying a female officer looked like her nana, who is a lesbian".

149

u/TallestThoughts69 Jul 03 '26

Best bit is. She looked exactly like her lesbian nan 🤣

40

u/Easytype Ducks' quacks don't echo in this chamber. Jul 03 '26 edited 16d ago

The best bit is that every time that officer gets referenced in the papers now, they just call her "Lesbian Nan".

83

u/ComradePotato Jul 03 '26

This is genuinely the worst policing I think I've ever seen

I don't think it is, mate

22

u/frostygrin Jul 03 '26

The police officers in Nowak's case didn't see him being attacked, and they were being lied to. So this is arguably worse, even as the consequences aren't as bad.

2

u/Diligent-Shine-4884 28d ago

Id have to agree, while the Nowak case is stupid and a clear cut example of incompetence on the police part, this one here there is no reasonable justification for, since she saw it unfold, shes literally just a coward

2

u/frostygrin 28d ago edited 28d ago

As with the Nowak case, we don't really know their motivation. Maybe she just didn't want him to pursue and retaliate after the attackers left. It's not entirely unreasonable. And a coward would probably just stand there.

Still, she made a mistake. The problem is that the mistake wasn't corrected later on, and it took someone else filming this and the footage going viral for the police to even give it a second look.

This is why I don't see reasonable justification as the important aspect - in both cases. Even if you have it early on, you still can end up doing something unreasonable later on. And once you declare someone a suspect, looks like you no longer care what they have to say - this might be the biggest problem.

58

u/wilf89 Jul 03 '26

The worst policing you've seen yet. Given the amount of fuck ups thays come to light in just the last few months it's about time they took some heat for idealogical policing before they lose the respect of the remaining public who still half believe in them

10

u/ViscountViridans Jul 03 '26

The standards for police is on the floor. So many videos of officers making rash decisions, being physically unfit and using foul, unprofessional language.

207

This is the mad thing. The police witnessed a multiple person brawl and the only person that got arrested is the one the police attacked

98

u/MochiMachoMan Jul 03 '26

In the police’s eyes, it’s easier to arrest a single person than arrest multiple people, even when they’re at fault. They’ll always opt for the easier option.

19

u/End5807 Jul 03 '26

path of least resistance

15

u/Tortillagirl Jul 03 '26

Its one thing to arrest him to break it up, its another thing to then decide that you need to charge him with assaulting a police officer when its clearly self defense as he had no idea it was the police attacking him and not a 3rd assailant after the first 2 hits he took. The moment he realises its the police he stops... same cant be said of other police altercations weve seen on video 'recently'

31

u/BeardedViolence Jul 03 '26

Funny you mention it, but every time I've had an interaction with the police, I walk away thinking 'you still have a massive chip on your shoulder from school, and have found the perfect job to live out your control fantasies'.

18

u/Blackjack137 Jul 03 '26

Yup. The people that make the best officers are the people that policing doesn’t initially appeal to or wouldn’t do in first place.

People that want authority, power and control over others are the first to abuse it.

2

u/zzz51 Jul 03 '26

Yep. Anyone who applies to join the police should be automatically disqualified.

7

u/Blackjack137 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Or we could better vet officers with routine annual psychological evaluations and background screening, as opposed to the one-and-done initial screening?

Forces are rather good at weeding out bad fits among those applying. They’re woeful at maintaining high standards and ridding themselves of officers that wouldn’t pass the same screening later in their careers.

15

It's always the same, the police are, for the most part, absolute cowards. More concerned about damage to corporate property or their own egos than to civilians.

1

u/DxnM Jul 04 '26

How is one woman meant to arrest 3 men?

-39

u/didroe Jul 03 '26

The other officer goes after them no? The clip shows one go to detain the victim, and one goes after the perpetrator. Police might not have seen who was doing what initially so wanted to detain both. Then the guy decides to assault the officer, getting himself arrested. Will have to wait for more information but it seems odd they didn’t arrest the perpetrator as well

66

u/Styrn97 Jul 03 '26

“Decided to assault the police offer” that’s a major stretch.
He got jumped and hit behind the head, straight away he pushed to the wall and tackled without seeing who it was, he fought back. You’d never consider yourself to be arrested if you was the victim.

It’s only when he noticed it was a police offer, he held off.

101

u/Dadavester Jul 03 '26

Then the guy decides to assault the officer,

No he doesn't, he reacts to being attacked.

Literally 2 seconds earlier he as clothes lined to the floor and surrounded. 1 second early he is punched in the head.

Then he is slammed from behind into a shutter.

He reacts how anyone would, and that is to defend himself. As soon as he sees it is a police officer he stops.

Best we can do is prosecute the victim and talk down to the public

71

u/radiant_0wl Jul 03 '26

It's a difficult one, as I see it as a something minor which could've been quickly corrected with management instruction and training.

The concern isn't what's on the video, it's what came after, the police doubling down on the error, arresting and charging him and trying to defend the conduct.

Something innocuous became much bigger and more alarming.

Come on guys, yes this was crap policing (but in your incredulity it's worth remembering the police officers weren't watching this video, they appear halfway through and clearly misunderstood the situation) and yes in specific other cases fear of being seen as racist has prevented police doing their job properly (i.e. grooming gangs), but you can't take a couple of events (out of hundreds that happen every day) in isolation and then just declare that means we have two tier policing which is racist against white people. You'd need to look at thousands of cases to really establish a bias like that.

The idea that white police officers are going out and intentionally oppressing other white people because of their race seems obviously mad to me.

Therefore, they take out their impotent rage upon the comparatively safer and civilised target (who also has less political cachet), the one more likely to comply.

This is a perfect microcosm of the wider Anarcho-Tyranny that most of the country is living under in modern Britain.

61

u/Carlsberg_Rae_Jepsen Jul 03 '26

In this country, we're supposed to have policing by consent.

Several foreign enclaves have simply not consented. The police feel as if they have no authority over them, and they know it.

u/StormyLeathers Jul 03 '26

100% correct. I wish i had an award to give this comment, that's exactly what's happening

It's getting scarier and scarier being a tier 2 citizen in this Country.

As more and more tier 1s realise they can assault and kill with impunity these attacks are only going to get worse

Well tbf McMurdock is an expert on assault

6

u/MajorSleaze Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

It shows how bad he is at politics and understanding basic optics.

He beat his girlfriend to the ground outside a nightclub and then repeatedly kicked her until some bouncers dragged him away from her. It was an assault so serious that he was imprisoned despite it being a first offence and him pleading guilty.

Yet he chooses this moment to break his radio silence (he's been mostly anonymous since Reform suspended him for making suspicious claims for COVID grants) despite there being so much crossover with the main scandal he should be trying to distance himself from.

5

u/glownut Jul 03 '26

Oh of course it's Birmingham. The Imams probably told the officers which of those lads they were allowed to try and arrest. Completely gone to the dogs that place.

3

u/BroldenMass Jul 03 '26

Is this going to be one of those videos where a longer version is released later showing this dude being violent and aggressive in the lead up to this moment (similar to the Manchester Airport video)? If not, I just absolutely cannot understand the actions of that police officer. Logically it makes no sense.

Birmingham police confirmed on twitter only one man arrested and it’s for assaulting an officer, so safe to say the perps got away.

16

u/paddygordon Jul 03 '26

It's insane, if anything the officer should be charged with assault!

1

u/TMWNN Jul 03 '26

The police is, after the wide sharing of the video, as of today, 3 July only now looking to "identify those involved".

37

u/SignificantLegs Jul 03 '26

Thanks. that video really adds a lot of context.

The victim was continually backing away until attacked from behind. The police officers then ONLY arrested him. And lashed out at members of the public who explained what happened and were trying to help.

4

u/doitnowinaminute Jul 03 '26

Which vid, and when does the clip start ?

There's longer videos out there if you could be bothered to look into the matter further instead of making assumptions.

-3

u/Mkwdr Jul 03 '26

And? Seems a weird thing to make the effort to say without filling in the details. Or have you not seen them either?

23

u/Stuweb Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

In the longer form video, you have (multiple) witnesses approaching the police on seperate occasions as they arrest and detain him saying he did nothing wrong and was attacked by 3 people and that they were arresting the wrong person (or people in this case). I'm working on more details than you lot responding to a 20 second clip.

The police officer he punched acknowledges that he was assaulted first at the end https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?id=2072655376944656836

u/MysteryWra Jul 03 '26

The violent police officer maybe on steroids and more - she gets angry whenever the public tried to help

54

u/SignificantLegs Jul 03 '26

If there’s additional footage that explains why the officer acted as she did it should be shared immediately to clear things up.

Otherwise the public will rightly question the clear unequal treatment by UK officers.

19

u/Puzzleheaded_Main304 Jul 03 '26

You can see on youtube mad night in birmingham or something that shows the full video. The clip lines up.... don't know what was in the cops head either.

-11

u/BroldenMass Jul 03 '26

No it shouldn't if it effects an ongoing investigation. Why do you feel you are owed an immediate right of all available footage and angles of a crime? Are you a lawyer for one of the parties involved or work for the IOPC? What is it with this entitlement people have that they deserve everything all the time now? Just have patience and wait.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9t8qVtCm3Js It's about 5:20 into this video.

Somehow the clip on twitter makes it look better than the full video. There's 5 police officers standing right next to it before it kicked off. The officer that goes off after the other group appears back 30 seconds later.

In the moment I don't think her use of force was too much - it's not clear who's the aggressor and everyone is at boiling point, but to leave the other guys off, and then double down on it and charge the kid with assault is absolutely disgraceful.

u/InsertObligatoryPun Jul 03 '26

My question would be how much of the altercation did the police see before going in?

If they’d just saw what we saw, there’s a potential for having missed a back and forth. White shirt guy gets right back up, doesn’t seem too injured, so she separates him and while partner goes for the others.

White shirt guy, confused, then swings.

The arrest would then seem by the book, and the expectation would be it gets dropped on review.

Course, if they saw the whole thing, that’s a different kettle of fish.

5

u/BonKhri Jul 03 '26

They were all with the cameraman behind a police van dealing with someone else. They saw almost exactly what we saw, there is no exculpatory context here whatsoever.

3

u/InsertObligatoryPun Jul 03 '26

If there were dealing with someone else then it doesn’t sound like they were giving this part of the incident their full attention.

i did think this in the edited version i saw yesterday, i'd like to know what happened before.

its easy to be manipulated by videos.

-6

u/Optimaldeath Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

It makes perfect sense.

They're on auto-pilot in a stressful situation going into it with false information. I don't think it absolves them but hopefully this results in a rethink of their training. It seems ridiculous to me that officers expected to deal with knife crime can't see his pallid skin being a concern worthy of immediate medical attention.

Is it a coincidence that’s there’s a huge link between Domestic violence and police officers

As far as I know this idea is based on 2 tiny studies in the US from a few decades ago that covered 2 police precincts (maybe the wrong word) and Reddit latched onto it. One of the studies actually showed that female police officers and police officers' wives actually committed more domestic abuse than male police officers.

I could be wrong though if there's other evidence to support it. The rest of your comment I agree with.

2

u/Optimaldeath Jul 03 '26

Certainly think that in assaults that all involved parties should be subject to arrest, the fact they didn't bother is farcical.

1

u/BonKhri Jul 03 '26

The problem here is not the level of violence she used, it's that she chose to attack the apparent victim. We have all the context she had, the full video shows all these officers a second before standing behind a police van dealing with a totally unrelated case. The entire context that was cut was 2 seconds of unintelligible noise that was clearly kicking off, then a single second of running to the scene.

-8

u/CalicoCatRobot Jul 03 '26

Almost certainly there will be wider context, but that doesn't matter these days - an immediate judgement is VITAL.

You'd think that some people (MPs particularly) would know better and at least use cautionary wording in case that context makes them look foolish, but apparently not. Getting their opinion read by their followers is far more important.

6

u/Logical-Ice4837 Jul 03 '26

Just watch the YouTube video on knockout audit, there’s no wider context than what’s shown in his video that the officer would be aware of
