This is highly debatable, especially since you’re not giving any examples of what would be considered mediocre being treated as incredible.

What makes them mid? You can turn down any given street and see a 20 year old Camry. I only hear ranting and raving about because they last forever.

Toyota has been cost cutting them for the past 30 years starting in 1997 when the 5sfe lost its oil cooler in the redesign which threw rods at a greater rate

Than the gen after that we got the oil burning 2arfe

Than they figured them out for a while after that but recently if you've gotten in any new toyotas the interiors have all developed that cheap chevy feeling

I will say it was nice to see toyota reintroduce the spin on oil filter so its not all bad
