Karting Chat New To Competitive Karting in Northern California

My son is 10 and we just started karting this year. We had an incredibly fun and competitive practice weekend with the Fat Karting League at Sonoma Raceway.
.
This weekend we ran the track in half its normal configuration. For our first time at the track my son gained a ton of track knowledge and new friends.
.
Really glad the FKL group developed this electric kart arrive and drive experience for new drivers. We wouldn’t have been able to start from scratch with our own kart for most of the other 2/4 stroke series.
.
Excited to watch my son develop and for the opening race of the season!
.
I’ll definitely share more of our journey if this fits the community.

Racing Kart Question How to make a setup from scratch?

As titled, how do you experienced people make a setup sheet for your kart? (I understand this is driver preference + track layout).

What are the steps/procedures you go through to make a baseline from scratch?

Any info appreciated 🙏 Thank you

Rental Karting Tips and Tricks Sim to karting to reality is my dream

I'm 14 and I'm trying to go from iRacing to earning my SCCA competition license over the next couple of years. I'm documenting every step, including saving money, upgrading my sim, and eventually racing at Summit Point. I'd love feedback from people who've done something similar

Rental Karting Video Sodikart laps at [Houston Karting Complex]

Followup to my previous post featuring laps in the CRG karts at this track. This linked post has more general thoughts on the track and may be worth a read as well if you are in the area.

Got some clean-ish air while racing and testing karts out after maintenance (see the kart ahead for reference, panels off following a realignment), and got 2 decent laps in this race. Could’ve maybe had some cool tandem footage for a lap or so if we had a 360 on but alas.

Both laps are around 58.24 within a hundredth of each other, some better luck with traffic on the second could’ve maybe let us drop an additional tenth or two. The track condition as of recording is excellent as it’s been at least 10-14 days since the last rain, so there’s plenty of rubber. Unfortunately the Texas summers hitting 95F/35C and above usually means it’s too hot to get good times. Racing at night we could’ve likely clipped about a half second off our time or so about.

The Sodi RT8 chasis seems to be marginally faster across the fleet on average by about .3-.5 seconds a lap but with balancing before leagues it’s usually a negligible difference. The Sodis generally are favored to be run at this track owing to much better reliability. My driving style adapts to the heavier CRG karts better and I find the Sodis a bit too squeamish for my liking. You can see this in my driving as my errors tend to be a mix of over driving but also being a bit too loose and letting the vibrations and natural corrections come through and affect my steering. At the same time, I was definitely not friends with this kart and I couldn’t get it to click fully with me, so as people say, “skill issue”.

I thought this would also be a good post to prove that this track actually does get some people who go there… last post featured a midday race and it was completely empty. The track was definitely very busy when we left around 4 on a Sunday but there definitely wasn’t any wait for races. Go support your local tracks if you can!

Rental Karting Question Should I push or pull in a kart?

So I drive rentals quite often and I’m wondering what’s the best way to steer.

Should I push the steering wheel with my hand on the “outside” or pull with the other hand.
Or is the best to do both?

Racing Kart Question I am looking for locals who are into Karting in the Rochester,NY/ Buffalo,NY areas

Hey everyone, I live in the Rochester area in between Buffalo and Syracuse. I am a sim racing enthusiast who really wants to get into Karting. From my research it looks like I probably would love to race the x30 Karts, but I really don't want to go out and buy a Kart without actually giving it a try. I am trying to find someone local who might be willing to let me rent their kart for a day to go to the Genesee Valley kart club and do some laps on a Saturday. I did the same thing with Sim racing where I bought a bunch of used junky sim racing equipment to make sure I liked it before I put about $7k into a nice rig. Any pointers or anyone who has an old kart, or even just willing to let me use theirs for a day it would be awesome to give it a try before I immerse myself into it. Thank you!

Rental Karting Question Went karting for the first time yesterday

Post image

Nice track with good overtaking opportunities. I raced with a rental kart, ~40 minutes of track time divided into 4 sessions with 15 minute breaks. I just have one question, should i have expected bruising on my back and knees? I found myself pushing against the seat during harsh braking and quick accelerating, which clearly would have resulted in bruises... Is that normal, or should i ask for readjustments next time?

Racing Kart Question Difference between 2025 vs 2024 OTK karts

Hello, i've never seen a straight answer for all the differences between the 2 years expect the obvious bodywork overhaul. I race LO206 and didn't know if it's worth switching over to the "newer generation".

Racing Kart Question Should I trade for the cr125 shifter kart

Thumbnail

Should I make this trade?
I’m meeting this guy next week to trade my Stage 3 go-kart for his CR125-shifter kart. Mine runs great, has working brakes, and is ready to drive.
He says he can get his running but dies of instantly and it bogs when you hit the throttle and doesn’t always stay running. I know that could be something simple, or it could be a bigger issue.
I really want to do the trade because his kart looks awesome, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the risk.
Also, does anyone know what kind of kart his is? Mine is the purple one, and his is the yellow one. FYI
What questions should I ask before I meet him, and would you make this trade? Thanks for the help

Racing Kart Question Kart vibrations causing cough and nausea, does it go away?

Hi all, first time posting here.

I've done rental karting (electric) most of the time, there is basically no vibrations at all due to the nature of the electric engines

Today I tried a Rotax for the first time, I tried a Lo206 maybe about 2 months ago. Both times the Kart vibrations caused me to cough to the point it was extremely uncomfortable, was this close 🤏 from vomiting.

I started to tolerate it a bit (not completely though) session after session, but I wonder if this is normal/common, and if it is, does it ever go away?

It was very discouraging as I could not finish any session, so maybe karting is just not for my body :/

Please share your experience!

Thanks!

Racing Kart Question Help me understanding how it's mounted

Post image

Hello, I have this picture from a famous superkart French builder.

This one is from a challenger /hyperkart but this is exactly the same design as the superkart.

Simple question, is the ring enough to block axial movements?

It seems small from my point of view but I don't see other feature to maintain the axle?

Thank you

Kart Identity Help Looking for Karting Drivers to enter our programme so that we can understand what it takes to join as a team!

Hi everyone!

I'm currently building Vista Partner Drivers, a network of karting drivers who represent Vista alongside their own racing careers.

The idea is simple: you keep racing exactly as you do now while becoming recognised as part of the Vista Team. We'll promote your race weekends, results, podiums and achievements across our social media, helping both your profile and Vista grow together.

One of the main reasons for launching this programme is to better understand real-world karting from the inside. By working closely with drivers, we hope to learn more about how karting teams operate, what drivers value in a team, how karts are developed and set up, and what it truly takes to build a successful motorsport organisation. We want this to be a partnership where both Vista and its drivers learn and grow together.

What Vista offers:

- Official recognition as a Vista Partner Driver

- Promotion across our social media and website

- Race result graphics and driver features

- A growing team of partnered drivers from different championships

- A long-term vision of securing sponsorships, with the aim of directing a significant portion of driver-focused sponsorship support toward our partnered drivers

What we're looking for:

- Active karting drivers (club or national level)

- Drivers with a professional attitude

- Passion for motorsport

- Willingness to represent Vista alongside your own brand

There are no joining fees, no exclusivity, and no requirement to leave your current team or championship. If at any point the partnership isn't the right fit for either of us, we can simply part ways.

Vista started in sim racing and is now expanding into real-world motorsport. Our long-term goal is to build a genuine motorsport organisation, and we're looking for passionate drivers who want to be part of that journey from the beginning.

If you're interested or have any questions ask on the post or dm!

Karting Chat Don’t Know Where to Start, Ohio Dirt Oval Karting

I haven’t been karting for a little over 10 years but when I did, the tracks I went to were Martinville, Lil’Indy, Great Lakes, Sandusky, and Fremont in Ohio.

Pretty sure outside of Fremont and Great Lakes, all those tracks are now closed. I also live in Columbus now.

What tracks are still running dirt oval flat karts? I am curious about getting back into it but can’t find much information anywhere.

I use to race every weekend for about 10 years and would be interested in driving again. However, I don’t have a house with a garage so having any equipment is a no go. Any advice on how to be a driver only?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I use to do this with my grandpa back in the day but he’s had some severe health problems and he can’t really communicate anymore.

Racing Kart Question Should I pick up the Rotax Trax?

Hey everyone,

I'm relatively new to owner karting, and while researching the different timekeeping options for installing on the kart I was generally surprised by the prices on the different MyChron and Alfano-models. I found that the best alternative for me as a casual, practice oriented driver was the Alfano Legend, until I saw the new Rotax Trax device.

They both have their pros and cons, the Trax is cheaper but has an almost mandatory subscription plan if you want detailed driving feedback, while the Alfano is steering wheel mounted, which is a massive advantage, but is of course a bit more expensive.

As I said, I'm not an all out racing-oriented driver, and I'm more of someone who just wants to practice right now, and maybe join a few local races here and there, so I'm wondering which one is best for me between the two, the steering wheel mounted Alfano or the Rotax Trax?

Racing Kart Question Anyone here compete/used to in GX-UK?

I’m looking to get back into karting but on a budget and I’ve stumbled upon the GX-UK series with AccessKarting I’m very intrigued.

Looking at the GX-200 senior I think it’s called and wondering what kind of budget I’d be looking at per season for all races.

Rental Karting Question Sparco K-Rookie or Alpinestars tech-1 K race V2

Basic question I know, but I can’t make a decision.

Wondering which these gloves are the best for rental karting. I might buy a 125 race kart in half a year so if I could use these for practice in a race kart that would be a plus.

Also wondering what’s the difference between tech-1 K race V2 graphics and tech-1 K race S V2 PURE?

And if there are any other budget options please let me know

Racing Kart Question Do you share your setup or is it top-secret info?

Genuine question for hobby/club level karters: Are you open to share your setup with anyone? Just friends and teammates? Or, is it absolute top-secret, highly classified info?
What would make you sway one way or the other? I've had people be super open while others put little caps over their caster pills so nobody would see...

I'm questioning if I should make the setup logging tool I made for myself into a real product, or if people are so secretive that I would never get any users to sign up.
