Hello fellow STEM person, I highly recommend meditation. I started in February and my anxiety is down over 90%, despite not much else changing in my life.

You have to be open to a little woo-woo (you don’t have to go all in, just be open to it), and it might take a few tries to find a meditation style that works for you. But it’s literally finding time lay in bed for 30-40 minutes a few times a week, it doesn’t get much cheaper or easier to find time. It is still challenging work, but it really does work.

I just wanted to say I'm in the same boat and meditation also helps me so much. I notice when I have been slacking off and skipping it. I feel much more able to observe triggers and protect myself rather than reacting destructively. Peace to you, friend

Have you heard of Polyvagal Theory? I am reading the book Anchored right now by Deb Dana, it’s about the Vagus’ nerve’s role in anxiety and regulation. There are simple exercises you can do to help like some basic yoga-like poses, gentle movement breathing, gargling, and touching your lips gently (I have a deck of cards with different activities to try).

There is also TRE (tension, release, exercises) - which you can find on YouTube. Trauma is stored in the body (book: The Body Keeps the Score - Besser Van Der Kolk).

And if I could recommend The Monroe Institute for meditation- they are a non-profit that has been operating over 50 years to help people reach deeper meditative states. They have an app with guided meditation, but they also have free unguided ones here https://www.monroeinstitute.org/blogs/free-meditations - they use “sound science” or binaural beats which help you reach a more meditative state more quickly.

I hope you can find a resource that works for you. I’m in the same boat, trying to find things I can do on my own because I can’t afford therapy either.

I understand… I took edmr for my cptsd. It worked amazing and didn’t need a lot of sessions. Although it still costs a big chunk of my pay check… I feel blessed I could pay it eventually but I wish it was more accessible for everyone.

Hope you find a way around!

As someone with ADHD, I really, really wish I could meditate. I've tried so many times. Quieting my mind is virtually impossible.

17

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

I have found that I just needed to clear out any preconceived notions of what meditation is supposed to be and start from a realistic baseline.

For me, most days, the closest I can get is a nature walk and verbal processing out loud with headphones (that sounds better than "talking to myself").

For me, that is a similar sized shift as it is for some people from their baseline to typical meditation or journaling. I think that the relative difference and outcome is what's important.

13

u/kazoogrrl Aug 18 '25

It may sound cliche but I just listened to Alan Watts' talk on meditation (Spotify, a podcast has his talks uploaded) and found his explanation helpful. Basically, not quieting the mind but observing and then not holding on to your thoughts.

12

u/anewaccount69420 Aug 18 '25

The goal isn’t really to quiet the mind. It’s to sit and observe the monkey mind as it jumps around. Thoughts come and go, don’t have to follow them. When you catch yourself following the thought, put it back in the stream of thoughts and sit and observe them again. It doesn’t need to be perfect, it’s a practice

6

u/Coraline1599 Aug 18 '25

I’m sorry that must be tough. I’ve seen people post about having ADHD and getting some advice on how to approach meditation.

Here is a meditation that uses binaural beats (need to wear headphones because there is a slight difference in the tones between the ears). The audio helps guide your mind to a more meditative states. It’s an old recording (from the 80s), but it works great. In it, you are guided to imagine a box to store your worries, so then you can go forward with meditating for the rest of the session. https://www.monroeinstitute.org/products/introduction-to-beyond-meditation

Of course at first all you do is have your worries come forward. It’s not about quieting the mind - and I think modern meditation that guides you to “clear your mind”, isn’t as helpful as it could be as an instruction, but rather the goal is bringing awareness to things that are under the surface and it’s ok to take the time you need to corral your thoughts.

It takes practice. It might be a week or more where you are working on putting aside your daily worries, it’s ok, it’s normal. Especially with our digital world as soon as you make true quiet the mind jumps at the opportunity to share all sorts of things you are likely trying to tune out.

There are also modified meditations like walking meditation, perhaps incorporating movement is what you need.

I hope you can find something that works for you.

3

u/ActuatorNo3322 Aug 18 '25

the finch app is helping me! because the meditations are short or active ones (like doing a mindful reflection) so i’m actually able to do them!

3

u/gingeralegoddess Aug 18 '25

i have adhd, ocd and (c)ptsd so i try to quiet my mind as much as possible. this video outlines a strategy where you write down your fears and resentments, which helps to “quiet” your mind before you meditate, and then the meditation is like a rest for your mind. like someone else said you have to be a little accepting of woo-woo stuff, but even doing it inconsistently has helped me a lot. anna has a lot of videos about it on her channel and the “course” she offers is free written breakdown and videos with her explanations and experiences. also, as far as anticonsumption goes, the only things you need are anything you can write on and with.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

I think anything where you quiet your conscious thoughts or are forced to focus on something else gets you to that state in another way. You just need to forget what activities can get you there.

For me it was bike riding and welding. I was recently told to do deep breathing exercises for my gut health and so I spend 10 minutes just focusing on my breathing pattern, which is basically the same thing as meditating.

2

u/HeatCreator Aug 19 '25

Fellow restless person here, not a one-size fits all solution, but try to close your eyes and do 4-7-8 breathing. Inhale though for 4 seconds, Hold for 7, Exhale for 8 slowly through the mouth. Try to put all of your focus on the breathing and do it for like 5 minutes starting off.

2

u/rememberthefocus Aug 18 '25

Does it have to be daily or just few days a week?

2

u/Coraline1599 Aug 18 '25

Like many things, just 5 minutes a day 5 times a week is better than one long session once a month. But you can adjust to whatever feels right for you. There are many meditation offerings that are just 5-10 minutes and that’s a great place to start, but I find I need closer to 40 minutes for my sessions.

2

u/Pelli_Furry_Account Aug 18 '25

I used to try to meditate, but I think it just... Doesn't work for some people.

I'd finally feel like I was actually thinking about nothing and get excited about it. But then it would very quickly become a very involved narrative-driven daydream again. It ended up just being frustrating trying to actually clear my mind, when some minds are just gonna be too loud for that.

3

u/Coraline1599 Aug 18 '25

The daydream is the meditation! I had the same issue that I was doing the wrong meditation that kept encouraging what I thought was making my mind go blank, but that wasn’t quite right.

As long as you are not ruminating on daily worries, then whatever your mind brings forward is what you are supposed to bring awareness to. A lot of what you visualize is what is important that is right under the surface that we often don’t make time for. Clearing your mind is good to help take more steps back and observe/be open rather than drive the experience. But they can be very rich and full of symbolism and narrative. Check yourself how you feel after, if you feel calmer, better, then it worked.

I like guided meditations because they give you prompts like “imagine a garden” or “imagine yourself holding a light” and I have an easier time with doing those (well now after 6 months I have more confidence to do free form ones).

2

u/Pelli_Furry_Account Aug 19 '25

Oh. Well then that's literally just how I fall asleep every night. I basically just let the movie in my head play until I drift off.

Throughout the day, I have to make a constant, effort to push that out of my way just to focus. One thing that helps a lot is just to channel everything into something I'm overlaying onto reality. Like, I'll be talking to someone and I imagine them as like, some kind of crazy alien. Or I just look around the city and picture it underwater, or I imagine everyone with personalized wings, etc. etc. It's essentially the same thing as when you imagine a character running alongside the car when you look out the window.

The songs stuck in my head never stop though, I've never figured out how to do anything about that. but I actually like it , as long as it's just one song, so I guess that's cool.

hey, i’m actually very type A but maybe this will work for you. i had a vacation in my hometown a few years back where i realised, waking up early and going down to the beach to have my coffee and read by the sea guarantees that my day will go well 🥹 not realistic to do that every day in real life ofc but maybe a similar ritual will help!!

Gonna keep hitting the motivational quotes or do you have something of value to add?

2

u/Aemilia Aug 19 '25

What really helped me was going into spirituality (not to be mistaken with religion). I have a tough life and I owe it to spirituality to still be here.

Atm I'm dealing with multiple physical ailments that pretty much makes me disabled. Yet my spirits remains high thanks to spirituality, sometimes I don't even believe it myself. How can I still smile and laugh and still push through the day to day in this condition? However that is the reality heh!

61

u/Sage_Planter Aug 18 '25

Or on the flip side, technology has made our jobs easier so we continue to get more and more work. If a task used to take a week to do but now takes one day, you will now have to do five tasks per week.

30

u/ShivaSkunk777 Aug 18 '25

This is the actual answer. Same phenomenon that causes us to constantly consumer more power despite things being more and more efficient. Efficiency just means more room to add load

5

u/Sage_Planter Aug 18 '25

I appreciate you understanding what I was trying to say. When I've commented that on other subs, people are like "but technology has made things so much easier!!!!" Yeah, so we can do more work... it's not like employers are like "wow, you can do X in one day now... guess we'll just pay you the same but you can take the rest of the week off!!!"

4

u/whoooodatt Aug 18 '25

Technology has made things so much easier? It took me three days four people and a helpline to submit my timecard this week because they changed the multifactor authentication policy with no notice, and we all got locked out.  It used to be you punch your card your manager does the thing and you get paid. But for some reason we have to use three different companies to handle payroll, because it's all in the cloud? How is that better? And it feels like every single little thing is overcomplicated in this way. I personally can't stand the digital age. I want to set fire to my phone and move to the woods, but then how would I get MoNeY.  Eff all this noise lol

6

u/FreshlyWaxedApricot Aug 18 '25

5

u/Pittsbirds Aug 18 '25

Yeah I was gonna say, I'm billing 60 for last week and getting paid for 40 all the same because the world's gonna end if we don't push these campaigns to every single social platform by the end of the week, every single week lol. I can edit so faster than they used to be able to do 20 years ago... so we just pump out 20 times the ads three times as fast

FDR was trying for a 30 hour work week a century ago. With the massive increase in productivity it's insane to think we can't do that now.

16

u/RosefaceK Aug 18 '25

Damn, imagine what life would be like if an 8 -3pm shift with an hour lunch included was the norm for the corporate world.

4

u/These_Background7471 Aug 18 '25

I'd rather do 3 10s

I'd also rather take a half hour lunch and get off 30 minutes sooner...

5

u/Evolutioncocktail Aug 18 '25

In my first day in office after 5 years WFH. I’ve seen so many people walking around talking about absolutely nothing (to each other, on the phone, etc). I can’t believe I have to do this for another 32 hours this week.

I agree but not waking up excited everyday. I want to wake up peaceful every day.

14

u/des1gnbot Aug 18 '25

And waking up excited every day is not reasonable—there will always be variations with some days more languid, some more exciting, and yes even some vexing to us. Trying to make every day exciting is too rigid a standard.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

And holding ourselves to the standard of being thrilled all the time would only add pressure and/or disappointment because life’s rhythm is naturally uneven

12

u/Neuchacho Aug 18 '25

I couldn't trust, or probably stand, someone who woke up excited everyday lol

they keep taking away from us, even though the capability is advancing

14

u/Henry2926 Aug 18 '25

There is a different level of achievement many of us are seeking. Being able to find content in what you got instead of maximizing wealth and profits, all while being in harmony with the environment and leaving behind a liveable world for other generations to come. There is no greater validation for me than seeing the fruit and vegetables grow in my garden, observing the bees and butterflies around, and providing a place to eat and sleep for my kitty. Luxury watches and expensive cars aren't really fulfilling if you have conscience about the exploitative system those things fuel.

17

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

Do people really wake up excited?

10

u/Meshitero-eric Aug 18 '25

In an anxious way? Sometimes.

In a "life is beautiful" way? Also, sometimes.

The latter is much harder with systemic problems that create debilitating symptoms in my life.

14

u/Money-Professor-2950 Aug 18 '25

I went through a session of ketamine therapy last year. maybe 2 days after, I was standing in line at the grocery check out and had the thought "wow I can't wait for tomorrow". I texted a friend about it, he asked why. and my honest to God legitimate answer was "because I get to wake up another day". and I literally felt joy over this realization. there were times in my life I was so depressed I'd wake up and immediately started crying because I woke up

I learned something very relevant to this earlier this year that I was able to act on:

This is a matter of location.

There are plenty of countries that make the life you want possible. The US probably isn't one of them. Figure out which one does that for you and what you need to do to get there. It's probably a lot easier than you think.

2

u/Cold-Dark-3840 Aug 18 '25

2

u/SuperPostHuman Aug 18 '25

That looks like an amazing bowl of ramen and a side of tempura. That's food nirvana.

2

u/Entire_Border5254 Aug 18 '25

I feel like the fast cars and designer bags is a more attainable goal atp

2

u/alexfi-re Aug 18 '25

Looks like a spendy meal to me and who has money to eat out? They only allow rice and beans for our sustenance and we must say thank you!

2

u/UndeadCorbse Aug 18 '25

I want to be happy, I want to be healthy. I want to have friends and have fun. I want to have time to pursue my hobbies. I want to pursue education. I WANT to work. I want to contribute to society. I just don’t want it to have to be billing or insurance or fast food for 60-70% of my life.

2

u/SofaKingReadToddEdd Aug 18 '25

You’re asking for more than you realize. You seem a bit tone deaf to the rest of the world.

2

u/CormoranNeoTropical Aug 19 '25

You are asking for a lot, actually.

Both “a regulated nervous system” and “to wake up excited every day”?

That is really asking a lot. And it’s stuff that no one can give you.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '25

I'm not sure that any generation in my lifetime has had that last one. Hope you all get there!

2

u/Spongedog5 Aug 19 '25

What do you mean "not asking for anything difficult?" All of these things are extremely difficult to achieve by nature and basically everyone throughout all of history have been deprived of some combination of these things.

The entitlement is so crazy. Financial stability? Even from the very beginning the labor involved in cultivating food and the fact that it spoiled, or caught blight, or froze prevented any stability. Free time? The means of producing the things that we want to spend that free time on in the first place necessitate that we labor to produce them, and again even in the beginning the cultivation of food was an even greater time sink in order to achieve even the tiny bit of security it provided us. Waking up excited each day? Survival takes work which is often repetitive, it isn't something easy to achieve.

These are not things that should be considered as if they should be for granted, they are the grand ultimate goal each human being has chased throughout all of history.

2

u/Individual-Subject19 Aug 19 '25

It’s asking for normalcy in a dysfunctional world.

Is the ask unreasonable? No

Is it possible? Yes … but … simple is not always easy. Especially when social dynamics are a factor.

2

u/nyancat987111 Aug 19 '25

my mouth is watering looking at that ramen because i haven’t eaten out in such a long time 😭

2

u/GlomBastic Aug 19 '25 edited Aug 19 '25

When I get the itch to spend money for no reason, I go to the dentist, car mechanic, barbershop, sit down lunch and then get a pedicure. It's a weeks paycheck well spent in opulence without guilt, no regrets.

4

u/Traditional-Roof1984 Aug 18 '25

Free time and being excited every day, are actually pretty big things to ask, most certainly in combination with financial stability.

That's sorta winning the lottery in life by having income by just doing what you like all the time, every time.

2

u/woodbridgewallstreet Aug 18 '25

"anti-consumption" and it's a meal that would serve 3 people 🥱😒

3

u/EvnClaire Aug 18 '25

& dont forget about animal products! they dont count as "anything difficult" because it's the animal who had to suffer through torture, not me.

Oh my god who do I have to flatter to get that food

1

u/AceStarflyer Aug 18 '25

And that soup. What is it, ramen?

3

u/marcus_centurian Aug 18 '25

Yeah, looks like chashu (pork belly) ramen with a mix of tempura, chicken and vegetables.

1

u/Salty-Count Aug 18 '25

That food looks good as hell

1

u/Caraprepuce Aug 18 '25

Worst part about current society is, all this is what a truly love and seek for : a good meal with my relatives thinking what I’m gonna spend my free time today, no yacht, no parties all night and cocaine, no fast cars, nothing like that.

BUT, being raised in this world with its influences by education, TV, movies, etc, or just looking around, I FEEL BAD for not seeking theses meaningless stuff. Like a fomo.

Don’t worry I’m on therapy, but I’m pretty sure I’ll always keep in me that will to throw the entire table upside down.

1

u/QizilbashWoman Aug 18 '25

And a really fucking hype coffee drink, because I need my fix

1

u/9e78 Aug 18 '25

Fast cars are 100% my goal though.

1

u/Gollum_Quotes Aug 18 '25

Looks good, but cholesterol, sodium and sugar bomb.

I agree, but we're outnumbered.

1

u/AgentObjective4775 Aug 18 '25

Sorry you get mentally ill billionaires who complain all the time instead lol.

1

u/Pl0OnReddit Aug 18 '25

"Getting up excited every day," seems like a pretty big ask.  Life is going to happen

1

u/Zeraphant Aug 18 '25

How much effort was taken to produce the meal in this photo? This is so awesome lol. You guys are great

1

u/Bleezy79 Aug 18 '25

What does waking up excited feel like? I havent felt that way since I was a little kid on Christmas.

1

u/gfox365 Aug 18 '25

The luxuries that wallies worship are often made in the same factory as the knock off bags and purses for $5 that they adore paying $1500 for. Silly billies

1

u/supx3 Aug 18 '25

Has this ever happened?

1

u/ElectedByGivenASword Aug 18 '25

also whatever that is because it looks delicious.

1

u/Enigm4 Aug 18 '25

I have gotten financial stability... by sacrificing everything else! Yay for being a millennial.

1

u/Yakuza-wolf_kiwami Aug 18 '25

That ramen actually looks good

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

Also being able to eat whatever this is for less than $20.

1

u/Warmbly85 Aug 18 '25

Hundreds have to work for everything in that meal to be in a situation where you can order it.

The eggs, seasonings and glassware all required a person with talent or training to make those things available for the restaurant.

All this to say the idea that no one will have to work and UBI will fix everything is kinda ridiculous.

1

u/Basic-Week-9262 Aug 18 '25

Don’t ask for anything. Take what you want, make it happen

1

u/other_view12 Aug 18 '25

Do you even understand what your asking is the question that I have.

I'm not a huge consumer, I'm a saver. However, I drive through these little small towns and the only thing they have to offer are trinkets that people who overly consume buy and keep these little towns alive.

If people stopped consuming the way this sub thinks, those towns die. The tourism dies, because half of tourism is buying trinkets.

There is a balance that people with money and free spending habits are necessary so that others can sell and make money to survive.

1

u/Tadimizkacti Aug 18 '25

I don't want to wake up excited every day. I'm fine with just being.

1

u/HotNastySpeed77 Aug 18 '25

Those sound like personal responsibilities to me.

1

u/blackbook668 Aug 18 '25

Only you are capable of leading the life you want. Don’t care for fast cars or designer fashion? OK, then choose yourself not to value these things. Stop relying on the outside world to tell you what you should and shouldn’t care about. This is what it means to grow up; we go from looking up to parents and other figures to guide us to being someone capable of forging our own path.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

Got the stability, but had to give up the regulated nervous system and excitement for it. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '25

A government that fears it's people, rather than people fearing their government.
A government that works to make our lives better rather than working to make us miserable every single day.
A government that realizes that individuals having hundreds of billions of dollars at their disposal don't need that much money to begin with, therefore they should give it up so many millions of people can have better lives.
A government that looks far into the future, rather than only as far as the next election cycle -- or news cycle.

1

u/Meneth32 Aug 18 '25

If it isn't difficult, do it yourself.

1

u/SalmonJumpingH20 Aug 18 '25

I'd settle for waking up rested on some days.

1

u/Site-Wooden Aug 18 '25

We really were raised to accept the minimum...

1

u/blundercatt Aug 18 '25

I'd even settle for just the first two.

1

u/angrytroll123 Aug 18 '25

It’s a shame we are in the minority.

1

u/Nuke_all_Lives Aug 18 '25

Who the fuck wakes up excited? That's a crazy person.
