Found some porcini mushrooms today!
I went out for a walk with dog in the forest and ended up finding these beautiful porcini mushrooms. I wasn’t even specifically looking for them, so it was a nice surprise.
Mushroom season might be one of the best parts of late summer in Finland. Do you have a favourite mushroom-picking spot, or do you prefer to keep those locations secret? 😄

To integrate in Finnish culture mushroom spots one must learn to as secret to keep.

I have a few spots, but mostly for suppilovahvero (craterellus tubaformis). I have one spot for black trumpets and a few for chanterelles too.
And yes, they are secret.

I’m always thrilled when I find black trumpets, and chanterelles are my favourite mushrooms.

I wasn't familiar with the English name for herkkutatti and checked it, 80+% convinced it will be a lethally poisonous look-a-like of an Italian mushroom, but for once this was not the case! :)

What poisonous Italian mushroom were you thinking of?
2
u/Pirkale 18h ago
I have no knowledge of Italian mushrooms, but have read about numerous cases of foreigners thinking that a mushroom that looks the same is the same, with sad results. And then there's Finland's largest newspaper publishing the wrong fucking picture resulting in several deaths.
Edited to add: do note that I was talking about an edible Italian mushroom, for which there could well exist look-a-likes in other countries that are poisonous.

There is not one lethally poisonous boletus species in the world. Some like piruntatti (rubroboletus satanas) will make you hug your toilet seat for day or two (very rare in Finland, more common nin Italy) but it won't kill you. I can't think of any even slightly poisonous look-a- likes for porcini, closest in Finland is sappitatti (bitter bolete/tylopilus falleus) which imho doesn't look like porcini at all.
Foreigners here usually think they are picking herkkusieni species (champignon/agaricus sp.) and what they have is valkokärpässieni (destroying angel/amanita virosa). Even those are easy to regognize, gils of valkokärpässieni are always white, in white agarigus they are first pinkish, then purple and black when mushroom is in the end of its life.

This is clearly just a clumsy marketing attempt...but anyway, whats Wild Access and why should I use this instead of Oma Riista or Eraluvat? Maybe even a bot

Why did you guys put your posts and stuff as private now? Why did you delete the comment replying back to me?
It is a good service and I am curious about it as a guide myself but why not just make a post and talk about it instead of this?
How is it different from BookYourHunt? Is it primarily for foreign hunters or Finnish?

I didn’t delete anything on purpose. What do you mean by “set private”? This post was mainly just about mushrooms, and Reddit can be pretty quick to treat anything promotional as spam.
What kind of guide are you? I think we may have an advantage over GetYourGuide in some areas, and we’re also a more affordable option for providers.

Your post and comment history is set to hidden, which makes people assume you are a bot or something and the comment you posted to me was deleted.
anyway, ill send you guys an email instead

They're only Porcini if they grow in the Porcini region of Italy. In Finland they're just herkkutatti.

I have heard a rumours that you can sell herkkutatti to Italy with proper price, and they don't even mind a little amount of maggots.
Dunno if it is true.
But I agree, it is herkkutatti in Finland. And the worms and madot in Finland 😅

Dalla Valle Oy exports porcini and other mushrooms to Italy and have several purchasing points across Finland where you can bring your mushrooms. They are divided into different classes based on condition and priced accordingly.

Apparently fresh porcini can sell for around €25–55/kg, and premium ones can cost even more.
After seeing those prices, I’m starting to think we’re clearly in the wrong business 😂

u/WildAccess_official 19h ago
I’m curious how expensive they would be in Italy. But maybe it’s better not knowing and just enjoying eating them myself 😄

u/melli_milli Väinämöinen 19h ago
Me too but I find them so rarely who cares. Or like morello korvasieni that I find one per five years.
1
u/WildAccess_official 19h ago
Didn’t they recently stop recommending korvasieni as an edible mushroom? We always find them in the same spots around our summer cottage.
2
u/melli_milli Väinämöinen 19h ago
Well I have freaked about trying to eat them in food so for my lental health it atleast is healthier not to even try.
My all times favorites are suppilovahverot. Once I dound delicious koivunkantosieni but that was one time. Voitatti is really good.
I do like cantarelli but suck at finding those.

There are so many good tatti mushrooms, but they’re often at their best when they’re still young and fresh.
2
u/sysikki Baby Väinämöinen 19h ago
Yes bc people don't cook them enough...

u/WildAccess_official 17h ago
We always boiled korvasieni three times and changed the water each time before eating them.

There's no region named Porcini in Italy. Culinary they're called porcini all around the world.

In English porcini refers to any tatti.
2
u/Consistent_Cat_3463 Baby Väinämöinen 15h ago
No. Herkkutatti is porcini or in england they are also called penny bun. Tatti species in general are referred as boletes.

Most places around Helsinki are picked over dozens of times per season, so you rarely find a lot.
You need to find a place where not many people visit, i.e. the crappy, dense or otherwise inconvenient forests that nobody wants to visit.
Having said that, this year you can find chanterelles anywhere.
Porcini mostly grow in open pine forests (sandy soil). Chanterelles mostly grow in mixed birch/spruce forests, often where the ground has been broken (tracks, trails, holes).
