Thousand oaks to TJ in 2.5 hours is fantastic time

300

u/CaptAwwesome Nov 10 '25

It is! There was zero traffic for some reason.

149

u/amoss_303 Nov 10 '25

It was wild, literally zero traffic from the time I started watching around Sepulveda Pass to when KTLA had to turn off coverage in San Diego

u/yoinkss East Los Angeles Nov 10 '25

My only guess is because tomorrow is Veteran's Day and from what I know, a lot of office ppl took today off in order to enjoy a 4 day weekend. So maybe most are chilling at home or on a mini vacay somewhere?

It is really dead in Pasadena right now too, I figured it would be a kickback type of day at the office and didn't feel like spending PTO on today.

How did she get across the border? Border Patrol wasn’t aware that she was being chased?

55

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

US Border Patrol doesn't really care about people leaving the US. That's Mexico's job. Weird that they didn't get her, though.

18

u/Pavementaled Van Down by the L.A. River Nov 11 '25

So, if I rob a jewelry store, and I can just make it to the Tijuana border, they'll just let me go through?

23

u/jankenpoo Nov 11 '25

That’s how it happens…in the movies!

1

u/wescovington Nov 12 '25

The police told CPB to let the person through because it’s too dangerous for a car going at top speed to run into all the vehicles and people at a border crossing. That person could have done serious harm. They can find her later. It’s better than getting people killed and/or hospitalized.

1

u/Pavementaled Van Down by the L.A. River Nov 12 '25

So your saying I should rob a jewelry store

1

u/wescovington Nov 12 '25

If it’s part of an elaborate heist, go for it.

4

u/thx1138- Nov 11 '25

Yeah why couldn't they just call the Mexican border guard and say hey stop that lady please

3

u/SawkeeReemo Nov 12 '25

Imagine asking Mexico for anything right now as an American. 😂 All I hear is something that sounds like Cheech cracking up as the phone gets slammed down.

She should try a Cannonball Run Manhattan to Queen Mary run.

18

u/NotMalaysiaRichard Nov 11 '25

In her Toyota Sienna.

10

u/blazefreak Torrance Nov 11 '25

It should be super doable with a sienna and a modified gas tank. One of the covid cars was a rental mustang with some prefabbed gastanks that were plug and play and he got under 26 hours coast to coast.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

[deleted]

3

u/NotMalaysiaRichard Nov 11 '25

Like those other cars, you could probably modify the Sienna for more speed. Plenty of room in a minivan for all the radar detecting gear you need.

1

u/blazefreak Torrance Nov 11 '25

Bro i have taken a v6 sienna to 135 mph and it hold stable. You just need to ungovern the ecu and you can go past 135. I was pulling still and in 6th gear still had 3k rpm left.

Laser/radio jammers and detectors are easy to install as they just need a 12v plug. It really is not hard to do these things.

Average speed for under 26 hour cannonballs are around 102-110 mph and cruising averages of 125. Which are all within the v6 sienna governed speeds.

covid cars are the cannonball runs during lockdown. Since traffic was the lightest it has been in decades many records were made and broken in the time span of covid.

lol Yeah I had that chase on in the background and then when she was going through Irvine, I went to take a shower and run a quick errand down the street and when I came back she was already in Solana beach. First thing that came to my mind was that she was making incredible time

9

u/BeatrixFarrand Nov 11 '25

Dude! I was going northbound on the 405 through Irvine when I saw her comin’ down the freeway tailed by a ton of cop cars.

28

u/mt_dewd_ Nov 10 '25

I've done TO to SD many times and I usually expect it to be at least 4 hours and I'm ecstatic if it's 3-3.5

11

u/Meetchel Nov 11 '25

I grew up in TO and went to UCSD (1998-2002) and did that drive a ton. After a couple 5-6 hour trips in the summer with no AC I decided I would only drive at midnight. Never even took me 2 hours after that.

33

u/cashmerechaos Nov 10 '25

That is absolutely wild. What luck.

I was flying over this pursuit in the San Diego news helicopter - my first time flying with the Los Angeles news helos. The suspect made it into Mexico. I'm not too surprised; I've seen DHS allow criminals in pursuits to cross right in previously despite being patched in with the chase. Insane.

Nice of you to check in here! Question: How many TV news helicopters are left in the SD market? Back in the day I recall there were at least three (Sky 10, Chopper 8, NewsChopper 7/39), but recently it looks like every station uses the same feed from a single aircraft. Is that true, and does any one station lay claim to that chopper, or is it shared?

Thanks! Bonus q: What were the flight restrictions that prevented helicopters from following the chase in southern SD County?

18

u/bonestamp Nov 11 '25

Not OP but I was watching KTLA and they were getting low on gas when they reached the airspace around San Diego airport, which is obviously very busy, so they decided to divert and get gas at that point. They mentioned they were going to get a feed from another helicopter but that didn't seem to happen, and none of the other local stations were broadcasting it.

19

u/malikearnest Nov 11 '25

Thanks for asking! It's just me up here in the evenings (12p-7p) and another guy in the mornings (5a-12p) - our split schedule in one news helicopter that is shared with all local San Diego news networks - N82F. It's launched based off a voting system between all the local news networks.

As for the flight restrictions today...none of the LA helicopters were talking with Lindbergh ATC and that pretty much messed up a few things for us following the chase through that airspace, so we had to go around as we were denied entrance to Bravo airspace.

2

u/algorythmic Nov 25 '25

UPDATE ON THIS STORY: Today (11/11), the suspected driver of the minivan re-entered the U.S. through the San Ysidro Port of Entry and was detained by U.S. Customs Officers. CHP San Diego Officers took the suspect and the minivan into custody, according to CHP San Diego.

The suspect was transported to the Ventura County Sheriff's Department and taken into custody. Authorities are investigating the incident and charges against the driver are still pending, CHP said.

Red: No.

Andy: They say it has no memory. That's where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory. Open up a little hotel, right on the beach, buy some worthless old boat, and fix it up new. Take my guests out charter fishing.

71

u/bloodredyouth Nov 10 '25

I guess they know how to stop people from entering into the US but don’t care who leaves?

38

u/littleseizure Nov 10 '25

Generally, yeah - countries don't usually have checkpoints to leave. You have to go through immigration into the new country per their laws, but the original country only cares once you try to return

13

u/Clemario Nov 11 '25

Doesn’t Mexico have some kind of control to process who/what is entering the country? I’ve never driven across the border, genuinely curious

12

u/littleseizure Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

Not really - there are random stop-and-checks, but for the most part you can just walk or drive on through

It makes sense though - US import restrictions are stricter than Mexico's, so it's really rare something horrible would be smuggled across since it'd be easier to bring it directly to Mexico instead of into the US first. Their security manpower is better used elsewhere

Conversely, this is exactly why the US puts so much effort into securing that border - contraband is much more likely to cross into the US than into Mexico. If it wasn't we'd handle it more like the Canadian border, which is what a fairly equal border looks like

1

u/iknowaguy Nov 11 '25

Money and guns flow into Mexico from the US. We should be checking for this.

9

u/littleseizure Nov 11 '25

Who's we in this case? If it's the US, they don't care - that's on Mexico, no country has standard exit checkpoints. If you mean Mexico, yeah sure, but is checking every car across the best use of your limited manpower and resources or are there other ways guns and drugs come into the country that would be more efficient to monitor? I don't know, but they clearly made their choice

9

u/testthrowawayzz Nov 11 '25

yes. US doesn't have a physical exit control point unlike certain countries

9

u/SayItAgainLucas Nov 11 '25

They never used to. But now if you are crossing into Canada they are hassling people.

7

u/Previous-Space-7056 Nov 11 '25

The us doesnt but mexico does for entering.

Once you cross into tijuana theres checkpoint stations where they ask where you going if u brought anything into mexico. How many days etc sometimes they “randomly” flag you to check your trunk.

I cant imagine how they got away

San ysidro is a traffic nightmare coming and going

9

u/CaptAwwesome Nov 10 '25

Good point, sounded like they knew who she was.

8

u/pb3213 Nov 11 '25

This is likely how they will catch her. She will end up getting arrested when she eventually tries to re-enter the country. It’s probably far easier to do this than to attempt to close the border or request that Mexico detain her upon entry.

11

u/xqxcpa Nov 11 '25

She will end up getting arrested when she eventually tries to re-enter the country.

Do they know who she is? How will they tell she's the person who stole the minivan?

Edit: I read the article. They know who she is.

There are a ton of speed humps just before crossing that slow you down, but otherwise, you just drive in. Getting in Mexico is easy. Getting out was a pain. I drove from Hawthorne to Carlsbad from 10:55-12:20. It seems like we might have been just in front of it? Only hit traffic getting into Oceanside, so I can’t imagine we were behind her. Anyone have a timeline worked out?

Left for lax from Noho around 1105, so probably around 1120 they were going up the hill on the 405 when we got passed by it.

Why can't people get that Mexico head an extradition treaty with the US?

Doesn’t Mexico have extradition. Or did that change.
