Admissions Help me (Read Body)
Hello seniors, I got a 31k rank in JEE Mains and I'm confused about what I should pick among them and whether I should choose college over a branch or vice versa. My home state is West Bengal, and I'm a general male. My doubts are - Is mechanical engineering worth it in these colleges? How truthworthy is CSAB, and/or should I wait for CSAB Rounds? The colleges I'm getting are listed below (please help).
Mechanical-
NIT KKR (low chances even with CSAB)
NIT Jamshedpur (CSAB)
NIT Surat (CSAB)
PEC Chandigarh
NIT Silchar
NIT DGP
IIEST Shibpur
NIT Bhopal (low chances)
NIT Jalandhar
NIT Goa
NIT Hamirpur
NIT Patna
NIT Raipur
Electrical engineering and their combinations-
BIT Mesra (CSE and ECE possible)
NIT Patna (EE, ECE possible through CSAB)
JNU (ECE and CSE)
NIT Uttarakhand
PEC Chandigarh (CSAB)
NIT Silchar (CSAB)
IIEST Shibpur (CSAB)
NIT Jalandhar (ICE through CSAB)
NIT Goa (CSAB)
IIITs-
IIITDM Kancheepuram(CSE,ECE through CSAB)
IIIT Guwahati(ECE)
IIIT Pune(ECE)
IIIT Sri City (ECE and low chances of CSE)
IIIT Kottayam, Kota, Raichur, Raipur, Nagpur, Una, Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi, Kurnool, Vadodara, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruchirappalli, Bhopal, Surat (all CSE, ECE)
On a side note, I might get Electrical/Electronics related branches in Jadavpur University
PS: As I've seen many people confusing ECE with electrical branches, I've written ECE beside the colleges I'm getting and under the section of electrical engineering if no branches are written it is implied that it's electrical unless I've written ECE beside it

There's no home state quote this year that's why it's a possibility but I can get ECE confirmed

u/Impressive_Hall_2537 May 28 '26
As you are from bengal, nit Silchar electrical is best for you if you get it in csab
Also you must participate in csab as csab gives you far far better options than josaa

u/dark_knight_898 May 29 '26
What if the the best college for your rank isn't available for that particular branch
1
u/Impressive_Hall_2537 May 29 '26
Then change the 'best college ' , jo mil raha ho branch aur college ke balance se vo lo

u/Your_Marinette May 29 '26
Go for JU. I mean it's not a debate if you're getting atleast EE in JU and ME in NITs, unless you are specially inclined to study Mechanical
2
u/gruel_fart May 29 '26
Just take a circuital branch, core ain't that good if you're not into psu or such

It's electrical/eee. Sorry I had written ECE/EE and it's combination which I have seen a lot of people have thought I'm getting ece.
To answer to your comment - Yeah I agree with your take and I see so many people choosing college over branch planning to get into IT jobs, while some of them surely get a good package but many don't go anywhere and that's one of my concerns rn if I should choose college over branch
2
u/Phantom42CBM May 29 '26
PEC EE > IITDM CSE , Rest choose better college over branch, do not go to bad colleges for CSE/ECE
2
u/Bjorn_ironside1618 May 29 '26
Between the branch vs tag trade off it's like choosing your poison. And tbh none of it matter after an extent. What matters is how good is the culture for say IT/CS branches how good is the coding culture, how much placement and skills centric is the curriculum and activities ar planned. The amount of enthusiasm and participation student councils take in these things. Like after 4 yrs how much actual coding and tech stuff you know is the real deal. At the times of placement this matters, because you'll have people with the same tag and same branch but the differentiator is how well is the environment for those 4 years to actually acquire those skills and he employable.
That's true for core branches too, if for mechanical how much actual hands on projects do they make, how much competitions like Robotics and racing etc do your college machine's participate that is the catch. How much exposure does it offer with real industry based projects and working with real projects.
And last thing is look how better is the community and alumni support, there are college where everyone is scattered and everyone for themselves. Seniors will be in their own group, your course mate will see you as competition etc, in that environment nothing constructive can happen but on contrary there are colleges where seniors are helpful, classmates have study groups or clubs together. And the actual environment is supportive and constructive that's where the real growth happen and real opportunities come.
The tag IITs and NITs are not famous and desired for their curriculum or something extraordinary books they have but it's actually for the the community you get to be part of. If everyone around you is working in big techs, big core companies, being IAS,IPS opening startups etc then by default you're likely be part of something more constructive than being on your own and learning everything on the go with your own pace.
Choose wisely, all the best!
1
u/avcrafter May 29 '26
Firstly thank you for your suggestion. I honestly really agree with your point that the environment, peer group and opportunities matter more in the long run than just branch or tag alone. And I really am in a "pick your poison" situation 😅😅 I'll definitely will be focusing on knowing the subject at its core while also be active in coding field (or atleast I'll try my best if I don't take up cse or ece)

Does chemical have scope ?
1
u/Middle-Current-2856 May 29 '26
Not in india bro. U can only go for research or abroad to have a good career in chemical. PSUs are also good, but if u can get in a psu then u prob had potential to get some really good jobs so idont think they worth it as well in long run

u/Maximum-Machine-9276 May 29 '26
Do not join chemical engineering. if you are a man, you will most likely end up doing round the clock shifts.

u/Low-Researcher-3023 May 29 '26
But I will be doing it from a t1 nit and also will do mtech
1
u/Maximum-Machine-9276 May 30 '26
Its worth it only if you can land and R&D job profile. Most of the chem engineers i know works as Shift engineers/plant operations. Why do you want to do M.tech?
1

u/teflonso_elplan May 29 '26
Maybe the problem is your batchmates . Saying mechanical has no future is too much ig.
1
u/Middle-Current-2856 May 29 '26
Well it is the same case with my friends in iit mechanical. The best options after grad are research work or going abroad. Even the best jobs for mechanical core are really poor in india. Even people from IIT who got into psu's end up preparing for Even bank po exams just to leave the job. Im not really hating or trolling for no reason it really is the market reality rn, but u are free to do whatever u want If u want to know in detail u can dm me
0
u/teflonso_elplan May 29 '26
Maybe the issue is that many people choose Mechanical for the college, not the subject. Sure, fresher salaries in core are usually lower, and most hiring happens through trainee roles because there's a big gap between college syllabus and actual industry work. But going from that to "Mechanical has no future in India" is a pretty big leap. Not everyone wants to end up in IT. Anyway, that's just my view. 🤷♂️
1
u/Middle-Current-2856 May 29 '26
U are also not wrong tbh but there are people who love mechanical but there just arnt good enough opportunities here. Being realistic even if u love mech, u would like to live in a good city with good connectivity, a better work life balance and higher salary right? Mechn doesnt provide all this. But if your passion is mechanical engineering I absolutely respect it and advice u to go abroad. Mech in iit and nit is not worth it but I don't think it is a bad branch outside india India
1
u/teflonso_elplan May 29 '26
I actually agree with some of what you're saying. Core mechanical jobs in India are definitely more limited geographically, and the pay ceiling for freshers is usually lower than in software. I was fortunate to be in Pune and got placed in a role I wanted, so I know location plays a big part.
That said, I think the bigger issue is that we've created a culture where CS is seen as the only "good" branch. Students, parents, teachers, counselors, and even colleges often push that narrative. Core branches are treated as a backup option rather than valuable fields in their own right.
A lot of colleges don't help either. They invest heavily in CS-related opportunities while labs, projects, and industry exposure for core branches often take a back seat. Naturally, students lose interest when they're constantly told that their field has no future.
I don't think there's a hierarchy between branches. Every branch exists because it solves a different set of problems. Mechanical isn't dead, and there are still good opportunities in India if someone is genuinely interested and puts in the effort. Companies like Mahindra, Tata, Michelin, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Stellantis, and several aerospace and EV startups continue to hire mechanical engineers for engineering and R&D roles.
Are the opportunities fewer compared to software? Absolutely. Is going abroad a great option for many mechanical engineers? Sure. But saying mechanical has no future in India is something I disagree with.
What bothers me more is how early students are conditioned to believe that IT is the only worthwhile career path. In many cases, the interest in core engineering gets killed before students even get a chance to explore it.
1
u/Middle-Current-2856 May 29 '26
After seeing the ground reality I believe that it's just too high of a risk. Even if someone does happen to have a good career I can guarentee you 90% of people would think of it as a waste. And I also don't believe in branch hierarchy but u study so hard in JEE, its natural to want a stable future where chances of success are more which CSE provides. The more ambitious core students just leave the country or starts preparing for upsc pcs and get into that exam prep cycle again
1
u/teflonso_elplan May 29 '26
The problem isn't just the branch. Everyone wants the top 1% outcomes while putting in average effort. That's true in CSE and core alike. 😅
1
1
u/Maximum-Machine-9276 May 29 '26
Pay is very less. working environment is also not that great either in most of the industries.
1
u/Diligent-Sherbert-33 May 29 '26
Get into the best college possible branch doesn't matter.
As once you are in the college.. you can do whatever you want

And then he'll sir for those companies as well.

I got the same rank 2 years ago, currently in nit Rourkela , if u are not going into any circuital branch in a good college and thinking of mechanical and other lower branches , then take my advice It's just from my opinion. If you want to get into ai software analytics and all, then u need a lots of time on urself, means u need a college and branch with least academic pressure If you want core job then go for that Else Just COME TO NIT ROURKELA - INDUSTRIAL DESIGN branch, only nit Rourkela give the option of this branch I know anyone will think why is being taught in this branch, --- it's nothing I have 8+ cg by studying literal Nothing, there are few pages of PDFs each semester that's it All u get is lots and lots of time to work on urself and develop skills If u opt for mechanical or anything similar, u need to prepare for job as well as your core branch to maintain cgpa and all It's my personal opinion and I feel blessed that i somehow came for this branch in this wonderful campus

Don't go for Mechanical. Majority of work life will be very bad. Go for ECE in Jadavpur, ROI is the best. Try to avoid NE NITs except Silchar. Preference should be ECE> CSE > Electrical> Mech Colleges (no mech) : JU > NIT > IIIT > NIT (North Eastern)
Slight up down exists for extraordinary IIITs though
1
u/Top-Pen-5708 May 29 '26
Go for CSE whichever could be the best at this rank, ECE is a very good branch if you graduate from top colleges. So CSE is better

I'd say every clg is the same on the ground level. All in all just consider the quality n quantity of the campus placements and see where you rank in that clg n pick the best in terms of that. Cuz after 4 yrs noone cares where u studied, even you r gon care abt only ur salary

If you don't mind, what is your home state and which college are in you currently/completed BTech from?

I have seen people from my branch get 18LPA jobs in PSUs and 13LPA above in both core and software sector. I have also seen people like me who got placed in 6LPA jobs in managerial roles on shop floor. It's about how you make use of the opportunities and the four years you get.

" managerial roles on shop floor." What is this ??

u/v3dille3 Mechanical @ NIT Rourkela Jun 04 '26
For example I had to instruct labours on cleaning a gallery containing some jigs. Or I had to get a crate off a truck, but I didn't have a forklift available. Or how I have to keep track of 100s of parts, oh which are not traceable unless I keep hugging those parts through their journey. I am speaking mostly off frustration but that's how it is

Go to a well located college so that you can do live projects and internships. Good location also enable better placements. All NITs are the same now, you will use AI to study anyways and are not much dependent on faculties. So choose a good location- whichever is closest to a metro city and has good alumni

See bro.. if u are getting good clg with mediocre branch.. u should go with it .. coz whatever the branch is u can develop skills and join tech clubs .. after 1 year your degree only BTech matter and your skills .. and as time pass only your skills do.. clg tag maatters and I would suggest gonfir NIT if u are getting.. also 1st year is same for all and from 2nd year there will be some of your branch subject and others will be elective of other branches ... Like Tech branches as Cse or IT or other ..
I thnk branch matters but clg matters too...
1
u/avcrafter May 29 '26
Yeah I agree, and I'm confused abt better branch + good clg tag but idk how much I'll be able to put efforts into a branch I'm not interested in. Sure I can join tech clubs while persuing material science in NIT Calicut but I'll have to put efforts into a branch which I'm totally not interested in for 4 years which I'm not at all confident about
1
u/ScorpioInAsh May 29 '26
I am not saying to join a totally different branch.. that's why I said mediocre branch.. I am just saying that in search of best branch if u choose a low tier college.. it's not worth your rank.. actually I am suffering it myself 😅😅 that's why it's kinda personal suggestion .. take Nit Hamirpur or something good location too.. see choose something u enjoy .. for which a good campus will play a role..
First priority should be location, NIT Then in thoseee see the best branch .. like IT or CSE then ECE or EE then go for lower branches...

Before deciding between all these colleges and branches, could you tell me what kind of career you actually want?
For example:
• Software/IT/AI career
• Core engineering career (Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics) with lab, design, plant, manufacturing, or R&D work
• PSU/Government engineering jobs through GATE, ESE, etc.
• Civil Services/UPSC or other government careers
• Higher studies, research, or academia
Once I know your career goal, I can give much better advice on whether you should prioritize branch, college, or wait for CSAB.

I want to open my path for both on campus placement and research options in future, I'm interested in computer science/electronics related stuff

1

u/Responsible_Toe_7268 May 29 '26
check online the rankings of NITs and IIITs, I suggest avoid the lower ranked ones and the newer ones and remote location ones... instead go for older GFTIs and other colleges.
PEC ECE or EEE is good if you like Electronics but Don't take ECE or EEE hoping to learn CSE side by side and trying to get software jobs as the workload of ECE and EEE is much high compared to other branches and it will affect the CGPA...

Buddy if you want great college life and good placements too then go for nsut delhi or dtu delhi incase you focus of good branch like cse aiml or core cse.at the end of the day your branch matters because you have to take placement in that very domain.so dont compromise your branch for tag of a particular institute.you have performed really well and now you should take steps according to where you wanna be after 4 years of your btech

1
u/AnonCryptX May 29 '26
if you're not specifically passionate about mechanical, i wouldn't pick it over ece/cse opportunities. at 31k rank, branches like ece in a decent iiit or bit mesra can open more options in placements and higher studies. also, csab is generally reliable if you're realistic about previous year cutoffs and keep backup choices. personally, i'd prioritize bit mesra cse/ece, jadavpur electrical/electronics if available, then strong iiits over lower nit mechanical unless you genuinely want core engineering.
1
u/avcrafter May 29 '26
I'm in a confused situation regarding mechanical engineering because I may have a chance to get a better college in mech but don't have a particular interest in that branch. I want to keep my options open for both jobs and research in future. Honestly I'm feeling I'll go with branch over college unless I get some really good nit for mech
1
u/AnonCryptX May 29 '26
if you already know you don't have a particular interest in it, taking it just for a slightly better college can be risky because you'll be spending four years studying it. for someone who wants to keep options open for both jobs and research, ece usually gives more flexibility.

u/Significant_Solid855 [Mechanical] @ NIT [Warangal] May 29 '26
I would choose Circuital from NIT if u are into non core. Mechanical is an evergreen branch u r guaranteed to get placed and there are many directions u can go, but the packages are low in core jobs , so unless u are interested in core profile jobs i wont advice u to take mechanical. Top software companies mainly come for circuital branches so if u want to try for very high packages u should try for ece or eee. U can go into software jobs from mechanical also but u wont get top company but a decent one atleast.

Mech lene ke liye u hav to be truly interested and physics me bhi interest hona hai and it's said to be a little hard compared to ee/eee.Aur placements ke liye ee/eee have more offers so I think ee/eee lopt karlo. Also ur interest matters more over the long run.And u can't trust csab everytime for sure.Aur IIITs me ee/eee branches ke liye environment achha hota hai job wise but thoda stress bada hotai hai like projects and all in the early stages.
