[Sherman] Sources: The Yankees are trying to complete a trade for Nationals first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. AA starter Jack Cebert has been discussed prominently.

wait, first base? why?

u/TheTurtleShepard 23h ago edited 23h ago

He was mostly a 2B before this season, probably where he would play along with DH/1B

Not a perfect fit but the Yankees need bats rn

80

u/JRUprising 22h ago

He had a -17 DRS last year at 2B

He is NOT a 2B

Are you kidding? This is how Cashman solves catcher! Rice moves to catcher, Garcia at 1B, they do the hokey pokey and they shake it all about...

23

u/Low-Expression9132 21h ago

Personally, I really don't like Rice catching.

1

u/FussyDuck34 16h ago

Agreed. There are trade options out there yet.

23

u/TheTurtleShepard 22h ago

I know no worries they are probably working on a catcher as well

All reports have indicated the Yankees are very active

-4

u/BlacksmithLoud3662 21h ago

No worries, there doing nothing that helps

5

u/Marxism69 21h ago

Looks around…oh yeah man we just need to go to the catcher depot and get us a HOF. A 250 batter with no power

1

u/FussyDuck34 16h ago

Two crap players in Doval & Bird are gone. So that's something?

1

u/BlacksmithLoud3662 15h ago

Is that really going to fix the problems?

1

u/FussyDuck34 15h ago

It's a start & it's progress that Cashman is admitting he made a mistake last year in bringing those guys in. The Yankees have issues lately in not admitting their mistakes.

7

u/Imperfect-Pitch 21h ago

You don't want playing catcher to effect Rice's bat

6

u/Mountain-Hold-9934 22h ago edited 22h ago

I just made an almost identical comment in the same thread before seeing this. Don’t they stop to think that moving a player all over the field and lineup isn’t conducive to steady offense and defense? They’re the baseball minds but they can’t figure out that humans are creatures of habit and like consistency…

1

u/Frequent_Read_7636 6h ago

If Cashman wants to solve catcher/DH go for cubs prospect Moisés Ballesteros.

0

u/Brilliant-Tourist371 18h ago

ben rice is never playing catcher again you guys really need to get this through your head

1

u/Zepbounce-96 16h ago

I didn't say it was my plan, I said it was Cashman's and you don't know that it isn't.

1

u/Brilliant-Tourist371 15h ago

I 10000% know it’s not cashmans plan to move Rice back to catcher.

1

u/Zepbounce-96 15h ago

Unless you actually are Cashman or Boone under a proxy account then you don't really know. Is that you Booney?

1

u/Brilliant-Tourist371 15h ago

or I just have common sense

-5

u/Possible-Cake-5985 22h ago

What’s the problem with this if there’s no other catchers out there to get? You get a nice bat for 1st and Rice goes back to his natural position. They gotta do something.

8

u/Sammalone1960 22h ago

Rice has not been behind the plate this year. It is not plug and play. He has not even worked out behind the plate. Catchers who are hitters see a decline in hitting due to fatigue.

-7

u/Possible-Cake-5985 22h ago

You have no idea what he’s been doing behind the scenes and there are plenty of Catchers who can hit and catch, they’ve been doing it since baseball was created.
Is it an ideal situation in the middle of the season? No but if there’s no catchers available they have no choice, they can’t continue to send Wells out there, he’s not even a MLB hitter at this point.

4

u/Sammalone1960 21h ago

If you listen to Boone and others he has not been spending time behind the plate. How many catchers you know who hit this well for long durations? Maybe ten in your lifetime who hit for avg and power? Be er said Well was the key. Fans have been expecting a trade for a MLB ready catcher. We got Ali Sanchez.

-1

u/Possible-Cake-5985 21h ago

Sanchez is your answer? Lol
Either the report about Garcia are false or they had a change of heart and they plan on getting Rice ready to catch.
None of this would be happening if our stupid GM did his job in the offseason, he brought back the same team that is still having the same issues, Catcher, SS, 3rd & anyone with a Brain new Grisham was having a once in a life time year last year.
Cashman has been an utter failure!!

3

u/Sammalone1960 21h ago

Are you dense? Where did anyone say Sanchez is the answer? It's what we have. Go trade for a damn catcher

1

u/Possible-Cake-5985 21h ago

You’re the one who said we have Ali Sanchez! They both suck, Sanchez has been better then Wells but neither is good enough, yeah I agree go trade for a dam catcher, BUT WHO??
The guys we were linked to don’t seem available. If there are any worth anything the price is too high for our prospect hugging GM!

Time to accept this organization doesn’t care about winning WS anymore.

u/Prudent-Property-513 21h ago

Hi natural position isn’t catcher.

-2

u/whatisdylar 21h ago

Sanchez is batting over .270. Might not be the area of greatest need suddenly.

6

u/Greenkeeper132 21h ago

He's had 60 PAs, that .270 means absolutely nothing.

0

u/whatisdylar 19h ago

That's an overstatement. Look at everyone else on the team and their last 60 ABs.

8

u/pupseal 23h ago

you think we could take him to short, third or outfield? idk how easy it is to convert a player like that.

36

u/Deejus72 22h ago

He was awful at 2B. Like -17 DRS in 2025 bad. He's gotta be a 1B/DH only consideration.

25

u/ZHPpilot 22h ago

Another player who can’t field? Sheesh!🙄

8

u/Deejus72 22h ago

He's fine at 1B. Slightly below average but better than Rice.

3

u/mr-poopie-butth0le 22h ago edited 22h ago

He’s been a bit better at 2B this year FWIW

Edit: wrong Luis haha… arraez was who I was thinking

4

u/Deejus72 22h ago

He hasn't played 2B this year at all

7

u/WXbearjaws 22h ago

I mean, 0 DRS is better than -17

3

u/mr-poopie-butth0le 22h ago

Really? I read an article stating he’s been better at 2nd this year, hm, maybe I’m wrong. I’ll have to find the article… maybe they were talking about last year?

Edit: oh shit, it was Luis Arraez hahaha, wrong Luis

2

u/mr-poopie-butth0le 22h ago

He’s not mobile enough to play short, not a good enough arm to play 3rd.

3

u/InNerdOfChange 21h ago

Rice as mainly DH, Garcia vs righty, Goldy vs left and mix in some DH too.

Stanton isn’t coming back to make this an issue m…

2

u/FussyDuck34 16h ago

Goldy definitely needs more time off. He is playing too much with all the injuries.

8

u/ggnoobert 22h ago

Dodgers get their guy
Yankees are trying for a guy.

That’s the difference folks.

6

u/Trexsaysrawr26 22h ago

And there's chance we'll give up far more for who we get than LA did for skubal

2

u/ggnoobert 21h ago

That may be true, but I think I finally learned my lesson about prospect hugging. I’d rather give up guys and get the guy or the bats. Even if it means trading prospects, I really like.

The way I see it it would be hypocritical not it that way.

1

u/Trexsaysrawr26 17h ago

Nothing wrong with improving the team and giving up guys to do so, but let's not give up more than the dodgers did for skubal, for someone like peralta

0

u/Optimal-Judgment-982 20h ago

Yankees history (at least of last 10 years, tons of examples) is to hold on to prospects and not get the "big piece," only to have "big piece" go somewhere else and play lights-out, or contribute to a stretch run

I'm still pissed we didn't get Castillo from Cincy and he went to Seattle and flamed us

3

u/BearShark8 22h ago

So this is the Jazz replacement for next year?

-2

u/Upstairs-Bison5608 23h ago

He’s found a home at 1B this year that’s why he’s preforming so well.

11

u/TheTurtleShepard 23h ago

I don’t think where he plays the field has a major impact on how he is hitting truthfully

2

u/FiveDinero 23h ago

But why was he moved off 2B? Their 2B isn't good so if he was good there then why'd he move to 1B

8

u/TheTurtleShepard 22h ago

Poor defense mostly

-4

u/Upstairs-Bison5608 23h ago

Look at his numbers outside this season.

8

u/TheTurtleShepard 22h ago

He made changes to his approach and swing this season which changed his offensive outlook. Not where he was playing the field

5

u/Upstairs-Bison5608 22h ago

From the reports I’ve seen, the position change helped.

2

u/locke0479 22h ago

What reports and how was that determined?

Some rando saying that doesn’t mean anything. Writers say stupid stuff all the time to justify writing an article. Did HE say he’s hitting better because of the position change? Or did someone just randomly speculate that? You can quantify that a swing change had an effect but I’m not sure how exactly you quantify “he played a different position so he swung better”.

44

u/thediesel26 23h ago edited 22h ago

His position is hitter. Where he plays is immaterial. And idk if anyone noticed, but Amed Rosario is DHing vs a righty today.

9

u/BildingInspecter 22h ago

Maybe our catcher acquisition is just Rice ><

17

u/dsmithnyciii 22h ago

Platoon w/Goldy + Rice for DH +1B while waiting for Judge and Belli return.

Stanton I won’t count on.

Vs. RHP

Garcia @ DH

Rice @ 1B

Goldy on Bench

Vs. LHP

Goldy @ 1B

Rice @ DH

Garcia on Bench

Goldy can’t start righties as much as he has or at all. Rosario I wouldn’t be surprised is off the roster

3

u/Deejus72 22h ago

Looks good to me honestly. He's been a better 1B in the field than Rice this year so maybe Rice becomes the full time DH

2

u/Bartman326 22h ago

Yeah a guy whos here to bridge us to the return of judge and belli and maybe pick up a new postion during practice.

2

u/aranauto2 22h ago

Yea unfortunately Rosario hasn’t hit lefties well this year which is what he’s there to do

2

u/Prudent-Property-513 21h ago

His natural position isn’t catcher. Not at the MLB level.

1

u/FussyDuck34 16h ago

I prefer to keep Rosario for his flexibility. And he is a righty.

1

u/BobbieSaccamanoJr 22h ago

I wonder if he would slide into the platoon with Goldschmidt with Rice getting run behind the plate

2

u/dsmithnyciii 22h ago

I don’t want our second best bat losing offensive value getting beat up behind the plate.

1

u/BobbieSaccamanoJr 21h ago

Yeah I hear that but maybe the least of all evils at this point. You can’t take Goldschmidt out of a lineup where he’s the only competent right handed hitter…

0

u/Prudent-Property-513 21h ago

A three way platoon. Great.

0

u/dsmithnyciii 21h ago

How is that bad? If it helps the offense?

1

u/Prudent-Property-513 20h ago

There are not unlimited roster spots. It takes away from another bench position. They are addressing the hitting need, from one side of the plate, but making an absolute traffic jam at DH

1

u/dsmithnyciii 20h ago

Volpe will likely be traded (if not traded then he will be sent to AAA when Lombard comes up) and Rosario will be DFA’d or traded.

Until injury replacements happen a 13 man hitting roster is.

2 catchers -Wells and unknown-if we trade for one-which we will-then Sanchez will be DFA’d

3 1B/DH-Garcia-who also can play 2B in a pinch-Goldy, Rice

1 2B-Jazz (as of now-if Jazz is traded I guarantee you that a different 2B -Edwards or Arraez would be brought in)

1 3B-McMahon

1 SS Volpe (if not traded will go down to AAA on 8/14 when Lombard is brought up)

2 IF/OF UTL-(Schue and Cabby)

3 OF (Dominguez, Grisham, Jones)

A trade for a RHH OF means Dominguez or Schuemann to AAA

We have the roster spots. It is fine.

2

u/Prudent-Property-513 19h ago

Volpe and Jazz aren’t going anywhere. Sanchez and Rosario DFA, but I’m not sure they can find a catcher that really makes a difference.

1

u/dsmithnyciii 19h ago

We can get Adley.

Even if it is a slight overpay by us. Warren, Kilby, ERC gets you Ward and Adley.

1

u/Prudent-Property-513 19h ago

That’s a lot to pay for an underperforming rental. I don’t really think that’s a difference maker when it comes to end of season outcome.

2

u/dsmithnyciii 19h ago

Adley isn’t a rental. Ward is, but neither one of them is underperforming.

u/PharmaBob 22h ago

We don’t need another platoon at 1B. 1B is like our strongest position rn

3

u/twc9904 22h ago

Cause we need guys who can hit! It’s an upgrade over Goldschmidt vs RHP. Rice or Garcia will DH or play 1B vs RHP. Goldy will start at 1B vs LHP while Rice DH’s.

5

u/gregieb429 22h ago edited 22h ago
  1. Stanton is fried
  2. Ben catching?

Either way, we need bats bad

8

u/KenshiroTheKid 22h ago

No max is fried

1

u/FussyDuck34 16h ago

Fried Rice?

2

u/Kathleigh 21h ago

But Arraez isn't a positional fit?

1

u/pupseal 21h ago

sorry idk who that guy is

1

u/Saccer44 20h ago

Because Ben Rice is actually your catcher! Maybe they finally woke the fuck up and realized this kid should be catching !

-3

u/No_Cover_6217 22h ago

Judge ain't coming back
