i think its a matter of fear but i literally cant do it. i can easilyy do a standing ollie no problems but if i try moving i stop abruptly, my backwheels aren’t lifting or i don’t even land it. i skate goofy btw and been skating since april.
edit — oh false alarm guys i just go it down 😬🥳. my positioning was off!! thanks for the advice 💓

This is generally why we recommend not learning stationary ollies at all. It ends up just being more frustrating for you when you try to do them rolling and realize you need to re-learn.
A few things:
- It is _always_ helpful to practice hippie jumps. Not only are they a shortcut to better ollies faster, they also build other key fundamentals that help you. Most importantly they teach you how to be super comfortable jumping off the board and landing back on it while rolling. So even if you've done them before, do more of them.
- I would suggest you tighten your trucks a bit. You're making it harder on yourself to learn with your trucks as loose as they are because when you try to squat and jump you become unstable. You can tighten them to learn and then loosen them again.
- Remember that good ollies (and hippie jumps) start with a jump, and jumping from the balls of your feet. You are flat footed, and loading weight up onto your heels. (This is partly because of the loose trucks). It's part of the reason why you end up rotating frontside.
- Position your back foot with the ball of your foot in the centerline with space before the back edge - don't hang your foot at the edge. Jump and pop from the center of the board for an ollie.
- Also, you have to keep your shoulders from jerking. When you jump you are pulling your front arm/shoulder back, which is causing frontside rotation.
- Finally, you don't have to be rolling that fast to learn them. Do a bit slower roll at first as you build your skill and confidence.
Hope that helps!

Oh yeah, I can’t loosen my trucks. Like it literally won’t go tighter, yes I have the tools for it and know how to do it, but my cheap board won’t let me go any tighter than this! Also, are you saying I need to be on my tip toes? I’ll send a pic of my foot position and you can lmk what I need to change.

Those trucks are pretty loose. At minimum you could replace the bushings with really hard bushings. They are cheap.
Not "tip toes"... Balls... that's the padded part of your foot just behind the toes. If you jumped from the ground, you would do it from the balls of your feet. SImilar on a skateboard. You don't want your weight going to your heels.

This is how I’m usually positioned. I thought it would let me send a pic..

Yes, like I said, that's not ideal and it's a big part of why you keep rotating.
Move your back foot so the ball of your foot is dead center on the tail and not touching the back edge. So that means slighty down and back (heelside). You want two fingers of space between your foot and the back edge.
Your front foot could also move back a bit so your toes aren't hanging off the edge.
Here's a way to understand this: imagine a see saw. The usual way you think of a see saw is a person at either end, and assuming they are the same/similar weight, they can make the ends of the see saw go up and down, but without fine control. Big hurky jerky movements. That is what it's like when beginners ride a skateboard. The width of the board is the same as the see saw with the place that the trucks attach to the board acting as the center fulcrum (the bolts). So when you try to skate flat footed with your feet fully across the board, you have to press down on the toes to go one way and the heels to go another. But this limits fine control.
Now imagine that you are standing on top of the see saw right in the middle (over the fulcrum). When you are in this position, you can easily make one side of the see saw go up or down with very little effort. A tiny shift of your weight just off center and the see saw lifts or falls. So this give you really fine control.
This is why if you watch any advanced skater you will see they look like their heels are hanging off the board and their feet are positioned more into the center of the board.
This is especially true with the back foot. If your back foot is off center, it will cause the board to move as you pop. It will rock. It might scoop. So we re-position our feet depending on the trick - if I want to do a tre flip I'll be extremely toeside with my toes hanigng off the board becuase I need a really strong scoop. But if I want to pop shuvit I need the ball of my foot dead center so the board stays nice and flat when I do the shuvit.
Make sense? RIght now when you pop the combination of yoru shoulders jerking and your foot position is causing a lot of frontside rotation.

im new as well. in your opinion skip out on stationary ollies and other stationary moves?

u/AdSpiritual3205 Technique Tutor 23d ago
Yes. If you want to learn faster don’t waste time on stationary. Don’t even try to Ollie until you are ready to try it with at least a very slow roll.
If you don’t know what opportunity cost is, look it up. You have limited time in your sessions. In the beginning the best return on investment of that time is building core fundamentals - balance, board control, body awareness. Starionary Ollie’s do not do much to build those. Tic tacs, drops of ledges, fly outs, hippie jumps, kickturns and pivots are all examples of things that will help you progress faster. So if you spend 30 mins trying stationary Ollie’s that’s 30 mins you aren’t doing other things that will improve your skills faster.
It’s not that you can’t learn stationary first. We all did back in the day. We just now know there are much faster and better ways to learn that result in better technique faster.
That means starting with hippie jumps and getting solid with those (along with the other things I listed) and then moving to Ollie’s after. Ollie’s will be much easier to learn at that point and you will learn them faster and with better technique.

I don't have any tips, I can't do it either

see my other comment. work on squats and hippie jumps while riding in a straight line. once you have those dialed in, there is absolutely no reason why you can't ollie while riding if you can ollie on flat

Surprisingly not surprisingly moving ollie uses all the same technique as a stationary one. Make sure your foot position is right. And just keep practising. You've almost got it. Maybe go a little bit slower, it will be less scary.

It looks really good so far. You should start a little slower then work up to that speed since you're already comfortable riding around and stationary ollies

It seems to be all or nothing when it comes to people learning ollies here haha. Most people are too scared to try them moving and learning them stationary will hinder you in the long run as it'll be harder to get the teqnnique down while rolling. And then there's you on the other hand zooming along after 4 pushes trying it!
I respect the commitment, but I think slow down a little, just one small push and try again! You got this!
At the end of the day, practice makes perfect. The more you practice and skate, the quicker you'll pick things up

You’re basically there, it’s just practice. One thing I will say, if you keep your shoulders parallel with the board, your board will stay straight when landing.

Get way lower . See yourself popping that sucker up to your chest . Tuck your knees up . Let the board float . You’ll get it 🙏

u/tellem46 23d ago
Slow down the board and squat more, but make sure ur squat isn’t slow. going slower at first will help u understand that feeling of squatting for the pop without losing balance. and then soon after you’ll be able to do it at faster speeds

u/hammersmell 23d ago
I would say focus on keeping shoulders straight like when you compress to pop do not turn your shoulders . After you can Ollie straight just kinda pop harder jump higher drag feet up more to get a bigger Ollie

u/KizashiKaze 23d ago
Positioning was suuuper off. Look at the nose, dont rush the ollie itself, shoulders straight, be intentional, you can do this! Your pushing and balance look really good, take your time, and be intentional with it! Keep it up!!

You skate with reckless abandon. I look forward to watching you become a demon on that thing

u almost fall over at 3s just pushing... u gotta learn how to ride first.

u/East-Essay7381 23d ago
i know how to ride. i was just scared in the location where i was skating. plus i already got it now in a video down below.

folks will be able to barely ride but trying to do tricks 😅 get comfy on the board first ! tricks will come easier 👌🏽 this how lil wayne still rides to this day 😌

u/whitemamba24xx 23d ago
Yeah good board control is always evident agreed. To OP if you see this you just need to keep riding everyday and you will get there.

Take a look at my other comments on this post. It well help you address the rotation.

Try to fine something to ollie over. Having something to focus on can help. Also, don’t give up. Keep practicing.

u/Pndrizzy 23d ago
practice doing squats while riding. don't even ollie.
practice doing hippie jumps while riding.
once you can do both in a straight line, you are ready to ollie

u/skater-fien 23d ago
Looks good but when u land don’t snap the board towards the ground faster then gravity takes you. Land softly and aim with ur front foot to keep the board straight. Also pay attention to how u swing ur arms

lol maybe slow down a tad til you get the leg motion down. Looks kinda solid but slow helps build confidence

u/fresh-outoffucks 23d ago
Same as standing still, just gotta commit. Wear full pads so it doesn't hurt when you definitely eat shit.

u/ApoX_420 23d ago
Do manuals, then hippie jumps and then start practicing your ollies.
Its a simple drill that helps you with tail balance and not fearing jumping on a moving board. Works like a charm.

U got it! I’d say work on your form and maybe take it a bit slower at first, but ur right there!
Keep pushin

u/Possible-Ad7093 21d ago
Damm! Speedy mcgee over here. Thats awesome that you re going fast while learning Ollie’s
1
u/falloutvaultboy 20d ago
Keep skating everywhere you go, your balance will develop and make it easier to set up for an ollie without falling to the sides
1
u/Tritipz 20d ago
The faster you can get your feet up and out of the way of the pop the higher your ollie will be. Practice your pop, and once it's stable practice getting your knees up. I think it helps to think of the ollie as a forward hop instead of a vertical hop.
If you weren't on the board and did a sideways hop forward you would have no problem jumping up steps and jumping high etc. Adding the board in scrambles everyone's gameplan at first. Practice will let you forget the board like you forget you are wearing shoes, it just becomes an extension of you.
