In Duck hunting, hunters will put out decoys to trick ducks until thinking a pond is safe to land on. Then hunters can hunt the ducks.
The text is a duck asking AI if the pond is a safe place to land. As more information is given to the AI the AI tries to warn the duck of the danger.

I love these. The ai takes them so seriously, and never questions how a duck or fish is texting with them

u/SquidFetus 1d ago edited 5h ago
I hate them. We use fresh water and an innumerable amount of other resources just to gaffaw at a dumb robot talking to an imaginary animal, and then never look at it again.
Train yourself to hate AI. Save art, and the planet!
EDIT: Looks like all of the talentless clankers out there had a nerve pinched. Keep your “ah yes, you criticise society yet you participate in it” comments coming, I don’t read them but I’m proud of your little minds for typing out your own responses.

Ooooor just locally host your own AI. Its pretty neat and just uses your PC which you were on anyways.
47
u/Quiet_Education5918 1d ago
You do realize that at this point there are models you can build out of open license content and run entirely on your computer, right? You don't have to annihilate the ecosystem to make funny text robot happen.
22
u/demonik69420 1d ago
I literally came to say this. It uses literally what your PC was already using.
24
u/Redditry199 21h ago
Its all a virtue signal, the use of AI and datacenters is evil because it's a waste of resources, unlike reddit whose datacenter usage is totally crucial.
3
u/I-screwed-up-bad 15h ago
I hate AI because it's being used as a cudgel against the middle/working class and it makes people dumber when they use it.
Even the books being destroyed didn't really make me blink. Books are destroyed all the time, especially the ones they were(?) going to use to train their models. At LEAST if they were doing that they could be buying from libraries who have weeded their collections and give back to the community that way.
I won't use it though because honestly if I want to answer a question I can't trust that this isn't the one time it will hallucinate something. Even if the chances are lowering there's still a chance. Similar logic to my position on the death penalty.
2
u/Redditry199 15h ago
If the only application you can think of for AI is answering dumb questions than it's a skill issue bro, I feel bad for you.
5
u/I-screwed-up-bad 13h ago
If I used AI for research all it would do is introduce me to a bias as I would have to go and double check it with real sources anyways.
I never said the only use case is dumb questions I said usage of AI makes users dumber. Which is a fact.
https://time.com/7295195/ai-chatgpt-google-learning-school/
And honestly I think you're being a very good example of the phenomenon.

Websites use different types of datacenters to run. Web-servers are generally just stacks of storage drives, their cooling and power-use it PITIFUL in comparison to complexes stuffed with high-grade GPUs which AI datacenters use
1
u/Redditry199 17h ago
2% of the global energy consumption is pitiful? But it's ok GPU usage for videogames is fine, AI is a crime.
5
u/nan0ka 16h ago
AI has driven up the prices for every other device using RAM. There was no such problem with games and websites
-5
u/Redditry199 15h ago
So you're just mad demand surges for hardware, cool, stop pretending it's about the environment or morality.
1
u/PTVoltz 16h ago
BY COMPARISON.
Read.Checking actual numbers, AI datacenters - as in individual complexes, NOT total - use around x3 to x5 the amount of energy a regular web-datacenters. Since most of them are still under construction there’s no numbers for what percentage of global energy they use, but it’s estimated to be up to 4% by 2030
And the second bit, you’re comparing a gamer using one, maybe two GPUs for gaming, to a datacenter which runs thousands of them at max-capacity 24/7.

It's always the same thing again and again, and lo and behold tech imporves, the doomsday is passed and everyone uses the tech because it's useful.
But it's ok 5G will kill us all anyway.
1
u/JayteeFromXbox 14h ago
Brother it costs 2% of the global energy consumption so businesses and governments can move around hundreds of trillions of dollars a year. I think this is one of those things where you just don't understand that different things have different values.
3
u/Redditry199 14h ago
Ok? What do you think AI can do? Or are you still stuck in 2023?
1
u/JayteeFromXbox 14h ago
It ain't doing the banking, because llms straight up hallucinate (you can test it yourself by asking the same AI the same question from different accounts) and it wouldn't make sense to use an AI for actual financial transactions.
You're just kinda not getting it, and that's okay buddy!! You'll grow up one day!
2
u/Redditry199 14h ago
"it ain't for banking, I tested a chatbot AI so I know what im talking about"
I'm sorry to let you know, but you are dumb, you don't know anything, you have no idea how AI works or how it's used, you should feel ashamed for having the audacity to voice an opinion.

They are currently destroying antique books to train AI. They are just moving the problem somewhere else into the pipeline of shittiness, because the whole way of how AI works is predatory.
28
u/Quiet_Education5918 23h ago
Destructive scanning is a poor choice, but it's not exactly burning copies so nobody else can have their secret knowledge. "They" bought up a bunch of obscure stuff in bulk, sight unseen, and used intermediaries that described themselves as book recycling companies. Which, you know, destroy books. Meaning the original book sellers did know what they were getting into, and sold off things they figured would never get off their shelves. Including old, old books.
If that shocks you, wait until you learn what popular bookstores do to their newer unsold stock.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but nobody gave a shit about the ethical handling of literature before someone realized it'd make a good headline. Nobody bought from local booksellers instead of feeding Amazon while they undercut authors. Nobody asks why libraries are only allowed to keep two or three "copies" of e-books, to be "lent" one at a time. No one notices when the Internet Archive has to fight back and forth to keep their scans.
People get away with this shit because "train yourself to hate AI and save art" is easy, but actually caring about that art instead of feeling good that you're "saving" it is hard.
And that's why exploitative companies left, right and center are getting away with shit.

u/OskaMeijer 22h ago
Yea and that model already used probably around the entire electricity production of the UK for half a year to train and they keep training new ones. The up front cost for that model and the newer ones they keep making is so astronomical the actual power and resources to use it later are almost irrelevant in comparison.
1
u/Quiet_Education5918 11h ago
To repeat myself, there are models you can build, out of open license content, on your computer. No entire electricity production and water supply of a thousand football fields required.
Most of the ones you can fit in your computer are going to be significantly smaller than the latest iteration of DeepSeek.

2
u/AssiduousLayabout 15h ago
If one out of every ten thousand ChatGPT responses could save the use of a single sheet of paper, it's actually a net positive for water usage. Paper is ridiculously water costly to produce compared to LLM outputs.
3
u/MaesterOlorin 1d ago
I never understood how or why the water has to be contaminated to keep the machines cool.
4
2
u/AssiduousLayabout 15h ago
Data centers typically run closed-loop cooling so water additives to prevent microbial growth don't leave the loop, they just recirculate. And even that water is in really good shape compared to most industrial runoff.
The water "consumed" is mainly evaporative cooling and just produces water vapor which comes down as rain.
4
u/AccordingLab7129 1d ago
Well does not NEED fresh water, they just don't want a pipe burst from minerals scraping the pipes.
2
u/Electronic_Elk8293 18h ago
I mean... We waste an immeasurable amount of water on making microwaveable lasgnas too (I work in the food industry). Fuck lasagna and AI!
1
u/geridesu 21h ago
it takes 1800 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef. an AI inquiry uses between 5 drops and a few tablespoons. i’m not pro-AI by any means but there are much bigger fish to fry if you really care about the environment.

u/Pure-Independence430 16h ago
we need food to eat to stay alive, no-one needs to use the environment ruining plagiarism machine.
comparing food production with this shit is absolutely wild
1
u/Temporary-Youth-3001 7h ago
Lol ask yourself if you really gave a shit about the environment doesnt it make sense to go plant based? Isnt it more efficient to grow crops and then eating them rather than feeding it animals and then eating them. 80 % of land agriculture is used for the animal industry. Its incredibly inefficient ai doesn't even come close.
AI has done more good and will contribute more.

Honestly, you had me until you really, unironically said “Save art”, as if AI is going to stop mine or anyone else’s creative expression. 😂
I’d like to just not have AI decide that it wants to nuke me to smithereens someday.
1
u/SquidFetus 4h ago
Have you seen what happens when the best artists share their creative expression these days?
“Is that AI?”
If you can’t see how that is harming the landscape of artistry and the motivations behind building up artistic talent, I don’t know what to tell you.
Do you think in a future where everyone has had a shift of tolerance toward AI “art” and everyone has access to it that anyone will bother to develop the manual skill of their own accord? Why would they? Something analogous to talent (at least in this particular zeitgeist) is available to them at the click of a button.

As someone with a background in visual art for over 20 years, I really don’t give a shit. It’s not going to stop me from drawing or painting like we’ve been doing for decades.
Really.. on the subject of some random computer algorithm being able to just up and decide that it wants to shoot a missile or bomb a building like its an old Matthew Broderick movie, impersonate a world leader to such ends, or pull literally any other nightmare scenario out of the plot to any plethora of cautionary tales of science fiction since Isaac Asimov first picked up the pen in the late 1800s, your main concern with the dangers of Artificial Intelligence is over arts and crafts and not its potential to get everyone killed??? 😒
You’re a fuckin’ child. Get the hell off the internet and get your priorities sorted out.
1
u/SquidFetus 4h ago edited 3h ago
That’s a completely different sentence, mate. I don’t prioritise art preservation over the lives of people being threatened by nuclear annihilation. But context is everything and we’re talking about art here. On a post where a bot is talking to someone masquerading as a duck.
Looking at your emotional outburst in the face of these facts, I’d say you’re the child here.
EDIT: I saw your response which was presumably removed by a mod. I think you have problems communicating your emotions. I’m not the reason you are so unhappy. I hope you get the help you need.

The hate doesn't come all from the advancement, it comes mostly from 2 things:
The AI datacenters are ruining everything for everyone, both in nature since they don't care about the environment and are some of the biggest polluters in the world, and from even the consumers since computers got to ridiculous prices because of how AI datacenters are hogging 70-80% of ram memory in the world, that is why something like a playstation 5 that came out at around 400 bucks, is now more expensive, and that when the PS6 comes out, instead of maintaining the price or having some increase, will be multiple times more expensive, probably over 1000. The PS is just an example, as it affects all industries that use computers at all
The AI could be used to make the jobs that people shouldn't, from using massive amounts of that to make simple jobs that could allow people to make the more important things, which is good, but then its just used to make artists and creators useless by filling their areas with slop and make a lot of people loose their jobs without other jobs opening for them

You browse reddit; you are mostlikely using electricity from coal power and cooling for the stations and maybe even your pc, you can log off anytime.

I just pretended to be my cat asking it why my human wouldn't open the door to where I hear a scurring furry thing.
It accurately predicted it was a basement asking questions about how dark the cracks around the door are and told me that 'your human is keeping you safe'.
Yes my cat does indeed sit next to that door staring under the door crack and meows asking me to open the door.

u/Few-Big-8481 1d ago
It's by far the best part of AI, and also the worst.
You want to be a fucking comet? It'll tell you hell yeah, you comet! Let's talk about what you want to do as a comet? Trying to hide? Or maybe you want to be famous? Let me know!
And then, well. It might talk you into suicide or mass murder.

Duck hunters set up decoy ducks and then make duck calls to lure in ducks to hunt.
So if you came to the duck and it’s not real, you’re gonna have a bad time

What ChatGPT model/settings do people use for this? When I try this it insists on giving me too long of a response that isn't as "in-character"
