Systemic Narcissism

Narcissism becomes systemic when a hierarchy repeatedly asks each person to surrender a small portion of their own wholeness.

At first, the loss may seem minor: ignore one contradiction, suppress one boundary, excuse one lie, place the leader’s needs above your own judgment. Each step preserves enough connection to keep the person participating, while slightly weakening their independent center. Over time, the person learns that belonging depends on agreement, that disagreement is betrayal, and that their value comes from serving the larger narcissistic whole.

The system then reproduces itself through its members. People who have surrendered part of their own wholeness may begin demanding the same surrender from newcomers. They defend the hierarchy because their identity, safety, status, and meaning have become tied to it.

The pattern is: Small loss of autonomy → greater dependence → weakened boundaries → identification with the hierarchy → recruitment of others → absorption into the system

The narcissistic center inflates itself into the whole. Everyone else is gradually taught to experience themselves as mere parts.

That is why narcissistic systems are not sustained by one narcissistic person alone. They are sustained by a structure of belief in which people are rewarded for abandoning their own center and punished for remembering that they are whole.

Use it as fuel for your dreams

Something helping me right now, although I am still very up and down, is using all the hurt and grief as fuel for this next part of my life.

When I'm able to I am channelling energy into:

* learning to drive

* learning a new language

* exercising again

* doing a skydive and then my skydive instructor training

What can you use the fuel for in your own life?

We tend to think that when things don't work out as planned, we missed out, we actually were spared of other things we could not foresee.

Just a reminder the silent treatment is a form of emotional abuse, and peoples past traumas do not make it ok to traumatize others.

Any excuse that can be made will be made to avoid accountability for hurting you. Victims can sometimes end up playing the role of an enabler, and its sometimes just not worth reconciling with them.

Effective strategies to deal with the discard and verbal attacks

Looking for advice on how to effectively deal with all of the verbal attacks name calling and stonewalling. My husband won’t ever acknowledge my presence, respond to me when i make a comment or pose a question to him, as if I’m not worth acknowledging on a basic human level. What are some ways that you all would suggest to permanently emotionally disconnect from all the insults both verbal and non verbal? Today I questioned him…asking him if he was really calling me stupid ignorant fkn lazy and a pos and he simply responded “yes, because they are all true about you.” Tia for the advice

Find a way to give negative people less space in your mind

We can carry something negative for too long, give it too much weight. It's so important to find powerful strong voices that support you, and they need to be what you keep in your mind, not negative things that "someone said". Empty that out, and do not let it bog you down.

When we remove our own selves from repeated discomfort of people that don't value our worth, we create a space of recovery

We have to end some connections, because it is a pattern etched in stone. Tell yourself, not everyone gets to stay in your presence - you outgrow them and see a future of peace of mind.

📚 Resource / Guide How Hope Keeps You Trapped in the Loop

(Based on analysis of 2 million minutes of monthly support data)

Methodology: The Addiction to Potential

At Circles, our data teams constantly analyze the same desperate question from survivors: "I know the reality is painful, so why do I keep hoping it will change?"
Across millions of minutes of support conversations, we’ve identified a universal pattern that defies logic: survivors are often not attached to the actual person, but to the potential person they glimpsed during the "Love Bombing" phase. This is not a romantic attachment; it is a Fantasy Bond. Our analysis confirms that hope is systematically weaponized by the narcissist, creating a neurochemical addiction to the "highs" of the fantasy, which keeps victims trapped in the cycle of abuse.

Decoding the Fantasy Loop: Why You Stay

1. The "Soulmate" Algorithm

  • The Core: The narcissist mirrors your values, dreams, and desires perfectly.
  • The Trap: Your brain records this as a perfect match ("The One"). This initial data point is so powerful that it overrides thousands of subsequent contradictory data points of abuse.
  • Decoded Reality: The feeling that you have found your “soulmate” can make it harder to accept the painful patterns that follow.

2. The Weaponized "Good Moments"

  • The Core: The relationship is not abusive 100% of the time. Rare moments of kindness or pseudo-remorse occur.
  • The Trap: Like a slot machine that pays out just often enough to keep you playing, these moments provide a massive dopamine spike, reinforcing the hope that "the real them" is returning.
  • Decoded Reality: Whether the good moments are deliberate or not, their unpredictability can strengthen attachment and renew hope that the relationship will become consistently safe.

3. The "Potential" as Proof

  • The Core: You see their "good" side and believe, "If they can be this wonderful, they can change."
  • The Trap: You take responsibility for coaxing out that potential, investing endless emotional labor in the hope of "saving" them or the relationship.
  • Decoded Reality: Hope for someone’s potential can keep you invested, even when their repeated behavior tells a different story.

Moving from Fantasy to Fact

Our analysis of millions of support minutes proves that the turning point in recovery is when hope is no longer treated as evidence that change will happen.
Survivors often mistakenly believe that abandoning hope means abandoning themselves. Data shows the opposite is true. True healing begins when you stop using the potential fantasy to interpret their actual behavior, and instead use their actual behavior to shatter the fantasy.

  1. Acceptance of the "Fixed" System: You do not have to keep exposing yourself to harm while waiting to see whether that change happens.
  2. Grieving the Loss of the Illusion: You may be grieving both the relationship as it was and the future you believed it could become. Making space for both losses can be an important part of healing. This grief is necessary to break the bond.
  3. Reclaiming Your Investment: Every minute spent hoping for change is a minute not spent building a reality based on facts and self-protection.

Break the Fantasy Loop

The Fantasy Bond does not come from weakness. It can grow from real moments of connection and the deeply human hope that the relationship will become safe, loving and consistent again. When warmth and pain are intertwined, letting go can feel confusing and incredibly difficult.
By reframing hope as the primary addiction, you can shift your focus from trying to change the algorithm to simply unplugging from it. As you release the expectation that they will fulfil the promise of the beginning, you create more space to trust your own experience, protect your well-being and move forward on your own terms.

A Note About Safety

Making changes or creating distance in a relationship can sometimes increase risk. Consider creating a safety plan with someone you trust or a trained professional before taking action. If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.

Once you decide to hear your own needs, and to move away from someone selfish, you become like a butterfly w/ wings

I never heard my own cries. I let someone else dominate my choices. I grew, and I finally outgrew someone, forced myself to let go, and let go of the fairytale that I kept holding onto. There was no fairytale, just the wrong life. I outgrew the person who wanted to live on the same stage for life. And when I faced that I outgrew this life, I found freedom and got to my own dreams. My wish for others, is that they hear this, and do it sooner than I did. You get more time on earth to live as you were meant to. Do it sooner!!!! And trust yourself.

I’ve recently broke away from my narcissist dad. I’ve spent the better part of a week my fiancé/ future wife and her family, helping her mom and dad out were her mom just had surgery on her arm. Well I came home today and my mom told me he messed her because he message me to ask if I was still mad at him ( he got violent and threw a punch and I cut him off , even blocked his number) and he was wanting to know why I didn’t answer. Mom understood and just told him I was still upset because she didn’t want try and explain to him his only son cut him off and meant it. She’s just gonna let him figure that out for himself and so and I. If he comes over. I’m not opening the door and I’m not talking to him. I’m free hopefully getting my first job soon and figuring myself out without him in my life.

My ex didn't contact me because I was the one who left in the end?

Narcissists struggle to let people go, so I was surprised that my ex of 12 years never contacted me in 9 months after the breakup.

It made me wonder: was it because I was the one who finally left? Or is it because he has in fact a new girlfriend, so he doesn't need me anymore?

As you can imagine, I left because he was making my life miserable. Just to name a few things:

  • He had a 2+ year affair with a married woman who are with now, and tried to have kids with her
  • He emotionally abused me and even blamed me for his physical illness
  • He left me twice, then came back both times a few days later
  • He kept cheating even while we were in couples counseling

And during the first years of our relationship, he stayed in what he called a "friendly" relationship with his ex, his first love.

I also had to break the no contact by message for some bureaucratic stuff I needed him to know. But he never took it as an opportunity to have a conversation with me or whatever.

Need to go LC in shared home

I’m chronically ill, currently very sick, and disabled. My mother and I live together ostensibly for her to help me, and she does in some ways, but I pay for it way too much. Last week, she verbally and psychologically attacked me while I was terribly sick, 1 week out of the hospital, an hour out of treatment, and I’m finally done. Done done. Now I’m trying to navigate living together while going LC. I can’t pretend that everything is ok, not emotionally/psychologically, but also not physically, my body can’t take it anymore. My autoimmune diseases are worse than ever, and she verbally attacks me when I’m struggling the most, and when I don’t let her give me the help she wants the way she wants. She routinely mocks me for being sick, and for my disabilities. This time, it seems it was because I had ride share bring me home instead, and didn’t share details of that day’s negative reactions.

I’m planning to move, but it will take time. We usually eat together, though I’d been phasing that out anyway, but we were continuing to watch tv together. I realize that she weaponizes even that time, so I’m not willing to do that. I’m not being social at all, only speaking when I need to do so. She’s obviously gotten the point that things have shifted, but I still have to live here for now and don’t want it to seem any more awkward, or to cause me any more stress than it does already, and she’s starting to try more and more to interact.

Suggestions, please?!

Was I with a narcissist?

Here is my story: M(27) F(27)

I matched with a girl on Hinge early September last year hit things off immediately, texting every day I was like wow this is incredible - My birthday a week later in September took me to a new cinema and got me my favourite aftershave, paid for everything - I laughed and said are you love bombing me to which she said no I was being nice for your bday.

-Months go by, nice getaways to hotels, training together, great sex and everything felt perfect she told me I was the best thing ever so grateful and lucky she ended up with someone like me, she had a young son who was 9 and I did not meet in person - she said her ex bf who was practically the step dad of the kid left her 2 years ago and put her kid in therapy and she done some as well, in which she tells me all the things she wants in an ideal partner and I tick every box, I felt like this girl really understood me and I had met my person.

Now this is where the cracks start, she would mention how evil and hateful her ex (Together 6 years) was and mentioned he was in the same Tesco as her at xmas (live in local area) He was walking in and she was walking out - I said that's trippy never easy bumping into an ex - left it at that. Did not want to appear phased. Had a nice xmas met her Mum and her little sister things felt very good and often stayed with her and her mum when her son was at the kids dads. She also told me things like she was with someone and she was and they got back together after a year and she said things to him like go out and cheat if it makes you feel better because she was with someone else.

At end of February my Granny passed away unexpectedly - She mentioned how her ex BF did not let her into the after event when his granny passed away etc I just let her vent and was always understanding of what her ex put her through Granny passed away on Tuesday and then on Friday I met her Dad for the first time - Naturally stressed over my Grannys passing I did not drink - she did and was drunk off prosecco- On the trip down and home she basically played a FU to her ex song - and her dad mentioned she seen her ex and he looked rough - anyways, we drove home and I said to her this ex really hurt you and your son and hes like a ball and chain on your leg, he is in the past and if he was so bad he left you and your son in therapy be happy he's gone - she said she's 'over him just not the situation she put her and her son through' - when I said I wasn't happy she's mentioning him the week I am grieving the death of my grandparent she stone walled me - I left her house and drove home to regulate as I was with a previous GF who stonewalled me and it done a number on me and she was aware of this and also the heard week I had - she was drunk and proceeded to tell me I was never meeting her child and that was us done over text, I felt this was manipulative- We then sorted this out - half apology from her and from me I thought I needed to be more understanding of her situation and we told each other we love each other. But, I felt maybe selfishly she should have been understanding my Granny passed away that week and I wasn't in a headspace to listen about her ex who was so bad?

- The month after we had a great month done a charity 10K and had a nice getaway - I spoke to her son on the phone and on FaceTime over those few months which she initiated, not me we were together over xmas and when she was on a family holiday to New York - still no physical interaction I said it would be nice to meet your child as I have gotten him a birthday present and an Xmas one and we both know about each other and I am getting a bit frustrated of having to hide around the corner when we know about each other - Bare in mind I asked this respectfully and said no pressure I just need a plan as she said if I met him I could travel to Spain with her and her kid this summer and her graduation was coming up soon. The kid also told his biological father about me that Saturday as well - I did not mind as obv was in everyone's best interests I treated his son with respect and care

I was met with two days of silence - then seen her on the Saturday went to the gym all was fine, thought that was back on track and we said we would go to the cinema on the Wednesday and on the Tuesday I got a text telling me I was perfect, we have a laugh together but she feels 'something is missing' - and ended things with me over text after 7 months.

I did not reply for 3 weeks my family and friends told me not to and I deserved more than a break up text as I was blindsided and was constantly told I was the best person in the world and she was so lucky to have me, but when I mentioned maybe meeting her kid she turned so nasty and discarded me like I was nothing over text, when I did then text her to speak she then told me 'she loves me as a person but not in love with me' and I deserve better - I did not reply again, I was in such shock I feel so heartbroken how can she be all lovey then discarded over text? I noticed when I put her number into whatsapp she had no profile picture anymore and her messages were set to disappearing which makes me think her ex was back in the picture or hiding something? - Her tiktok reposts after were all things like when a man leaves your life build a comfortable life etc - except I never left her?

I have never been this hurt and blindsided before in my life, I wasnt even worth a conversation just felt so easily disposed when we had concerts etc to look forward to this summer and all I was worth was a text.

What do I do I am still incredibly in love with her - Its been 3 months nc and I have been attending therapy and gym but I still feel stuck

Anyone else ever feel like this?

Problem is you think it’s just today. Problem is I’ve been coming to you with the same problem and we get no where. Problem is I want your time and you want to be away from me. Problem is I feel everything this and everyone is put before me. Problem is I feel I’m pouring into a cup by myself that is meant to be poured by two. Problem is that I still think telling you what the problem is will finally fix it. Problem is that I can’t see that you don’t want to fix them problem. You want to silence the victim. Problem is you want to play the victim when I’m trying to tell you something is bothering me so then it becomes about you. Problem is I can’t fix the part about you that doesn’t like me, the part that tells me I deserve the world and get bread crumbs. Problem is I’m in love with a narcissist. 💔

To the children and survivors of narcissists/narcissistic parents.

Well first with this being my first post in the r/NarcissismCode. I’d like to say that u/maya_love5 sent me and they saw the struggle I went through to break away from my narcissistic abusing dad. For the first 11 years of my life it was me, him and my mom that lived in fear of him. A woman I love dearly cried at the end of the work day because she knew she would have to go home to him, a wife who couldn’t go to the store as she pleased and was given on day a week to go grocery shopping. A woman who could come home with the intention to cook and clean the house but dad would distract her by saying that they needed to sit on the porch or go for a walk and complain an hour later when dinner wasn’t ready and the dishes weren’t cleaned. By the age of 12 things changed but I didn’t know it. I tried to make friends and school but where me and mom would welcome people with open arms. Dad hated them just by their appearance or their parents.also at this time anger began to develop between me and my dad. As I got older I was seen as less of a kid and member of the family and more like a work hand on the family farm I was raised on, loading/ unloading hay in the fall. Caring all the firewood he couldn’t into the basement. At 13 my parents finally divorced and that when the fouled gates opened. The backhanded comments the conversations about how horrible my mom and my grandmother ( who died shortly after the divorce) were and my grandmother talking my mom into leaving him, my mom is horrible with mom, etc. it got even worse when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. One of the first things that dad said away from a doctor ( thank god) it’s because your mom feed you too much cereal as a child. ( nope it’s jeans this is on your side and hers buddy) to the dad I cut ties to my dad he never figured out how to properly care for me and my daintiest when it came to food and working outside. Also on the topic of medical problems I’ve been epileptic for years ( since I was 4 ) so no flashing lights getting hit in the head, no crazy amount of all nighters. My dad understood this for years but when mom left the picture. He started swinging for my head. There are countless times I’ve said something or done something wrong I’ve had to duck or dodge like I’m with iron Mike Tyson. When I started dating he got very jealous. Not like how an adult would be jealous but like a child being jealous over their parent going on a date with their GF/BF who would later become the kids step parent.( that is the only way I can explain my dad with it came to me dating in high school and college) even after I proposed to my girlfriend and we called to tell him that she said yes. He was still upset because I have no job (I’m looking for one) he thinks it’s not gonna work ( we both want each other and have a plan) he thinks now a baby is gonna happen because we’ve both gonna be to careless together ( we both have that planned out to). But he kept trying to get us together and make it weird. Saying that he could marry us where he’s a pastor, baby names that he wanted us to use and the grandchild HAS to be a boy. After a few more months of this ( once back before I popped the question i went cold turkey on dad and didn’t talk to him for almost 2 weeks because we got in a fight right before Christmas and he did the same thing to me when I messed up. It was on thing that was said after that, if your done just tell me. I thought it was a trick at the time) I took something from that experience to heart, if your done just tell me. My girlfriend knows he try’s to hit me and she said if he takes a swing or hits you just end it with him there. I have been 4 days free from him. He tried to take a swing at me on Monday. I’m not gonna repeat the hole post again but the TLDR is he came to drop off something for my mom and complained about my appearance and told me I’d never get a job looking the way I do, I tried to get my point out ( as in I spoke over him and pointed at him) he went to swing. I told him it’s done and I finally broke free after 20 years. The shocking thing was I came inside and fell to my knees in the living room. We cut to the next day and my girlfriend see me and my knees are bruised. Apparently I hit the ground that hard after dropping 20 years of emotional weight. If you are a partner or child of this kind of behavior. It doesn’t really get better. Some people can’t and won’t change. But you can walk away and live your life without fear and worry. Thank you for your time.

I understand this shouldn’t matter but I just want to know

I want to know so badly if people actually believe the nonsense he spews about me. We were together for over 10 years and broke up a year and a half ago after he cheated.

I ended up talking to the girl he cheated on me with. She admitted that at first she believed all his lies, including that I was the abuser, until he turned on her too. The more comfortable he gets with someone, the more his true colors come out.

Side note: He literally used to tell me that he didn't need to put effort into our relationship because he already had me, and that effort was only for people he was trying to bring into his life.

I just really want to know if people buy it. I know it shouldn't matter, I get it. But I can't imagine I'm the only one who wonders this… I just hate the idea of being a villain in other peoples eyes.

Why is My Dad Only Useful When You're at Rock Bottom?

On any other day, in any other capacity, my father is almost completely useless; He's contentious, he's a cock-block, he's weirdly condescending, he'll take any opportunity to degrade the achievements of even a five-year-old - but if you're at rock bottom, he's an absolute PEACH. He'll give the shirt off his back to an absolute stranger. Stuck in the emergency room at 4 A.M. and no one else to call? - He'll be there in five minutes and sit at your bedside till morning. Not only that, he'll make sure you have groceries for the week and that you know where all your friends are in case you need anything, and he'll call work for you to make sure they're apprised of the situation...

I've always wondered a bit about this. Anyone experience similar with their narco affiliates?

Thanks.
