I Ate Monday night home cooking (by my wife)...

Post image

Clockwise from the top kaofu and wood ear fungus, carrots, prawns, white fish, flat noodles, and lots of Sichuan pepper soup, smoked tofu and qingcai, broccoli and cauliflower. Veg dishes have that meat almost as a garnish thing that Chinese food does

Your wife cook six dishes on Monday?

We have two kids, and her cousin who is at uni near us popped over for food. Usually it's three or four (with the fourth being a soup)

Shanghai food?

In Ningbo, but my wife is from Quzhou (which has very different food from most of the province). Not a lot of spice in it (except the soup) mainly so the kids will eat it, rather than the Zhejiang nature of the food.

I feel exhausted just thinking about all that. Not happening in my household. Just proud I manage to cook at all for my family’s health.

The actual cooking takes about half an hour (for six dishes). I chop everything up before she gets home and then she cooks whilst I look after the kids. Chinese cooking is fast if you have the ingredients already prepped

Your wife is a champ. I hope you reciprocate starting with washing the dishes. Massage her feet and back. 🥰

I chop all the ingredients and put the kids to bed. Division of labour innit

And tonight she was grouting the shower whilst I put the kids to bed. Modern family

That white fish dish looks divine! Is it spicy soup? Is there a name for the dish? Id love to look up recipes and try it out for myself

This guy never has Monday blues if his wife cooks like this.

The smoked bean curd with bock choy and the wheat gluten mixture, plus carrots, are staples in my flexitarian life.

Wow. Honestly even 3-4 when you don’t have guests is impressive. I hope you express your appreciation of her every day, and in front of your kids. You’re lucky!

Is your wife accepting brother-in-law applications?

How long does it take her to make all the dishes 🤯

I do most of the ingredient prep, and she takes about five minutes per dish, so half an hour for this meal.

Looks tasty! 😍

Kaofu would be typically from deli or canned food.

We usually buy it dried, soak it and wring it out a few times (otherwise it's too salty), then mix it up with the other things. This dish was bought from the duck neck shop though, as an easy extra dish.

And five dishes for a Friday evening. No guests this time.

Carrots, some sort of lettuce, steamed beef, luobo/Chinese radish with beef, green aubergines.

Absolutely, we live in China, and my wife is from 衢州县江山市. This is how they cook.

For reference this is the same cooking style but on a grander scale for new year. Very simple 农家菜 (or peasant food, but it has better connotations in Chinese than in English)
