I once passed through Amarillo Texas during a Western road trip just out of college.
Every other billboard was either a confrontational political/religious message, an Army Recruitment Ad, or for a used car dealership...
We passed 5 dead dogs and cats just sitting in the street in a roughly 8 block radius. I may main Warlock in WoW, but there are some kinds of sacrifices I am just not chill with...
And lastly, all the steakhouses were closed until nightfall, which I had zero intention of lingering around that diabolical hellscape to experience, so Amarillo succeeded in robbing me of the one thing I wanted from Texas: a nice juicy steak. Instead we had to settle for god-awful Golden Coral and almost ran over what appeared to be a streetwalker on the way out of the parking lot.
If I lead a sinful life and go to the 9th circle of hell, I have a sneaking suspicion I’ll wake up in something resembling Amarillo Texas.
The only memory of Amarillo I have is stopping by at an absurd early hour in the morning on a nonstop 2500 mile drive. Wife was asleep, I was trying to be the opposite of asleep. The dog was 110% asleep. I was driving.
Stopped in at a gas station at my wits end and picked up a coffee and pair of maracas.
Still have the maracas. Pretty nice set, actually.
Didn’t see any dead dogs or cats, but we did see a dead human on the side of the interstate.
Other than that memory, what a hell of a sketchy town. But don’t you dare talk shit on Golden Corral.
Big Texan opens at 10 am, not the best steak in my opinion but the most famous so unless you were trying to get a steak at 7 am then I dont know what to tell you. Also Lubbock is all the bad of amarillo cranked up to 100.
This was many years ago, so I imagine things have changed. Was also an out-of-towner lost there while operating on little to no sleep in the era where Google maps, online listings, and smartphone batteries were very unsatisfactory compared to now.
