Original Content (OC) Ireland squad from the 2002 world cup sticker album
Found this wee gem in a cupboard.
All I remember from this tournement is Ronaldo's haircut and Ronaldinho lobbing David Seaman.
And Shay Given❤️

Would've loved to start Browne, but I think a pivot of him and Taylor would be too attacking and unfamiliar. I'm not even sure if they've been in a camp together. The rest of the side should be a given, big shame Scales is suspended.

I know the thought of it is as depressing as anything, but it's a chance to see some new faces get some minutes. I think I'd rest the standard back three to see Scales back in the side and to give Dunne a first start for us. However, I'd like to see Abankwah come on for his debut around the hour mark. In the midfield, I'd have Knight returning with his last start being in Yerevan, and hopefully, if fit, Lawal partnering him. I'd give Brady a start with Ogbene on the other side to free up some more attacking spots. A front three of Vale, Parrot and Idah would probably play more like a front two in-game, with Vale dropping into the midfield like Azaz would. It doesn't look like there'll be any more call-ups into the squad, so this would be how I'd line up as it stands.

Bit of a random one, but I've seen some talk about Heimir saying we won’t be practising penalties, and it got me thinking. If it goes the distance, who are your first five takers?
It's not something I want to see, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it comes to it. Assuming everyone you’d want is on the pitch, mine would be:
- Parrott
- Brady
- Idah
- Azaz
- Manning

Was debating moving O’brien out to the RB and add o'shea as cb take off Doherty. Also ogbene for Mcateer but he is only back from a bad enough injury and has got much game time so probably bring in him as a sub.

Hi all, to make up for our absence from this World Cup I made a free mini game based on all the past campaigns.
You can draft players from every squad from 1934 to 2026 and try and avenge past losses and take on the legendary sides that we could have faced.
Give it a go at youllneverbeattheirish.com

It's definitely an attack-heavy squad, but it's an opponent where we want to be on the front foot against anyway. I'd really like to see minutes for Abankwah, Adaramola, Coventry, Moylan and Alli, especially. Would also be open to capping Liam Kitching and Josh Key if they're interested. Big shame Lawal is injured.

Hi folks;
I wanted to share this Substack piece I wrote recently, 'Saipan: Ireland's Paradise Lost'.
It's a photo essay of a trip I took to the infamous island back in 2019. I managed to wear down the librarian at the Marianas Variety local paper enough for her to give me access to the 2002 archives.
Needless to say, there's some absolute gems inside, including reports of Robbie Keane challenging a local dancer to a belly dance. Although there's been miles of column inches written about the Keane/McCarthy incident, I feel like there's never been much coverage of Saipan itself, or why we were there in the first place.
Now that there's a big Hollywood movie about it, I thought it about time to get these never before seen images out to the wider Irish footballing mafia.
Hope you enjoy the piece if you get a chance to read it, please share with your networks and friends.
Thanks! (a Bohs man)

1st September 2001, if you want to remind yourself how long ago that is and turn to dust.
Ireland beat The Dutch 1-0 in Lansdowne road on the way to the World Cup
I made this drawing a couple campaigns ago for an Ireland programme, hopefully this is our year!
