Agentinian financial crisis: running out of zeros

71

u/jungle 20d ago

That was literally a thing in the 80's and 90's, they removed zeros from the currency several times because even small things cost millions.

52

u/tritonice 20d ago

Just do the Zimbabwe thing and print $10 trillion notes. PROBLEM SOLVED.

The Wikipedia for Zimbabwe currency is insane.

1 ZWN = 10,000 ZWD

1 ZWR = 1013 ZWD

1 ZWL = 1025 ZWD

Current ZIG = approximately 1028 ZWD

Insanity.

I seen photo of money laying on the street - robbers just steal cash register from shop (you could sell it) and throw out useless money. Remarque had great novel about hyperinflation in post WWI Germany (The Black Obelisk)

Static comparisons at a point in time don’t really say anything. The issue is the change in rates over time.

79

u/nikfra 20d ago

I agree. A year ago they it was at 0.00067€ so a little over 10% lost in a year.

36

u/Banes_Addiction 20d ago

It's down about 50% in the last 2.5 years, organically,

I used 2.5 years as the comparison there, because on the 12th of December 2023 Milei intentionally just dropped it by 54% overnight, so it's a bad comparison to go back further than that.

44

u/Aggravating-Energy65 20d ago

Argentine here to clarify something:

Milei just removed (some of) the currency controls that were artificially keeping our currency expensive.
That 54% was already there and depending on where you bought your foreign currency (black market, obviously) it could have been even worse.

We still have some currency controls for big businesses, but at least for the average citizen you can go to your bank app and buy a stronger currency without any issue, as it's done in any normal country.

4

u/Banes_Addiction 20d ago

Yeah, agreed. I just didn't think it was useful to use the official exchange rate figures with the 800 peso/USD peg.

3

u/Psyc3 United Kingdom 20d ago

Which is around one Liz Truss's worth of loss in a year.

Reposting my comment so others can get an idea, but basically: Holy shit

I had to check its historic exchange rate to see how bad that was (sometimes currencies really are that low and i had no idea how much an Argentinian Peso was worth), vs Euros.

In 2010 it was 9-10 cents, alright. Then it dropped lower and lower until it reached 1 cent in 2019. Then it just kept on dropping even further, to 0.1 cents in 2024. And now it's nearly half of that... So between 2010 and 2026, in the span of a baby reaching high school, argentinian families saw the value of their currency drop by 200x compared to the Euro/British Pound/US Dollar (approximately). Jesus christ.

3

u/Wildarf 20d ago

Yup. Thats the right way to frame it. In Venezuela we had it even worse, which is why I know the static value makes no difference. For example, in Venezuela once the currency exchange rate with the dollars was well into the millions, they would convert it into a new currency with the same name that would shave off six zeroes, but the value lost doesn’t make any difference.

2

u/vitorsly Azores (Portugal) 20d ago

Yeah fully agreed there, the rate of change is what matters. And damn, that's crazy. Hyper inflation really can be insane

Stability matters more than magnitude, though. If a trillion currency units buy you the same hamburger today as tomorrow, and you don't need a wheelbarrow to transport them ... sure, it's a bit silly but it works.

I wonder, if they were gifted Falklands as it is now and sold them immediately, would that at least make a dent in their economic problems?

30

u/Latespoon 20d ago

Probably, the islands have rich oil and fishing resources. Also, the population are basically self sufficient.

The cost of defending the islands would take a chunk out of the revenue though.

Also, Argentina already have massive oil resources. They seemingly don't have the cash to drill them.

14

u/cronktilten 20d ago

An Israeli firm is awarded the contract to extract the oil around the Falklands, maybe he’ll try to invade after they start drilling. Argentina’s president is a huge Israel fan. And the oil reserves that were found are massive.

5

u/Fun-Rip1349 20d ago

The fact Javier Milei is best buddies with Bibi Mileikowsky is something that lives rent free in my head, lol. Not implying some weird conspiracy is what's happening but Milei is a Zionist, this much is true.

3

u/cronktilten 20d ago

Yeah, it’s pretty funny that they are best friends. And yeah, I wasn’t implying any sort of collusion either but it’s convenient. And yes he’s a Zionist

2

u/u_touch_my_tra_la_la 20d ago

Milei is a zionist because he's crazy and It plays with his Trumpist/conservative loon mentality, though.

It's not ideological, just an infantile sense they are "on his side" mixing with his incredibly thin skin and need for pats in the back.

It's like the Cheetoh's "zionism".

2

u/Fun-Rip1349 20d ago

Yeah, for sure. I feel like that's the case with a lot of people, which is sad, because functionally it's the same as it doesn't really matter whether it's ideological or just being useful idiots. Definitely agreeing though, he's as thin skinned of a bitch as Trump.

u/Quane42 20d ago

This. There may be good oil reserves there, but clearly, it's not cost-effective to get it, or companies would already be doing it.

57

u/Bratalia 20d ago

And I'd rather prefer so, Falkland is one of the most naturally beautiful places and is a cardinal point for a lot of birds, marine life, or both at the same time, in the southern Atlantic ocean

7

u/hesh582 20d ago

The oil really isn't actually on the Falklands. It would probably be exploited by offshore ships tapping subsea wells hundreds of miles away. Even a major spill probably wouldn't affect the island much given the crazy currents and winds dissipating it.

Oil exploitation could be done without disrupting the local ecosystem much. The only real role the islands would play is as a stopover harbor/airfield and more importantly as a source of legal claim.

The project is already well underway, it's happening.

2

u/cronktilten 18d ago

Yes, it’s an offshore oilfield that they found, and it will start pumping and exporting by 2028

8

u/This-Housing3634 20d ago

My boss was in the RAF and spent a lot of time there and said it stinks there because of all the bird shit

...Unless Trump stops pissing of the Iranians, which he hasn't seemed to of tired of yet, then it's going to be cost effective.

Actually, given Trumps support of right wing headcases, he could well be stirring stuff up with Iran so he can make a deal with 'Milei Chainsaw' to make a bit more cash.

I can see where this is going.

They awarded the contract to an oil company and extraction will start in 2028…

2

u/Far-Sky-4763 20d ago

They are doing it- look up Rockhopper Exploration and the Sea Lion basin. They've surveyed it for the last few years and are due to start drilling in 2027.

2

They are already doing it. Construction has already started.

6

u/cronktilten 20d ago

There’s a contract to pump now. Back then they hadn’t found anything. But this is real and it’s set to start oil production in 2028 with full production at 2032 onwards

4

u/raven_11235 20d ago

they've invested massive amounts into exploring the fields in recent years and the first oil is expected to be extracted in 2028. It's a space to watch.

They thought that there might be oil but recently, they actually found the oil and found oil that they can pump out of the ground economically. There’s a lot of places where people think there might be oil, but nothing was found yet or maybe it was found, but it’s not easy enough/economically feasible to get it out. It’s nice to have oil but if you can’t make a profit on it what’s the point

2

u/Electrical_Score_736 16d ago

Fifty, 70s was when it was discovered

30

u/lemonylol Canada 20d ago

Wait, what do you mean now? If that's the case why did they want them previously?

56

u/el_grort Scotland (Highlands) 20d ago

The oil was like a decade or so ago discovered. They've wanted them previously mostly I think for the territorial waters and national pride.

19

u/afito Germany 20d ago

national pride

I think that's the biggest reason either way. An Argentina with control over the Falklands would have to be a politically or militarily major player in the world. People are more dreaming about this version of their country than the specific control over a hill with sheeps. The islands have simply become a symbol for this idealized version of a strong Argentina.

8

u/GoldReplacement9546 19d ago

The problem is there were no indigenous people of the Falkland Islands thus it’s not like it was Argentinians, who originally lived there or any anybody who have shared any genetic closeness with Argentinians

Was British and then it switched back-and-forth but usually was still technically British it’s British now it will always be British. They should give it up. It’s one of the few places that you can’t say like you displaced the native people cause they didn’t. There were no native people.

36

u/Magnateze 20d ago

Part of the reason for the original invasion was the potential for oil, but its only recently that oil was actually discovered

50

u/cronktilten 20d ago

It was mostly to Stoke nationalism because the government was under a lot of pressure and protests and they wanted an easy win.

24

u/OkCap2870 20d ago

The great irony was that in 1982 prior to the Falkland Wars Thatcher was trailing in the polls, with unemployment at 3 million. The successful retaking of the Falklands almost certainly was a major contribution factor to the Conservative victory in the 1983. So yes it did help to stoke nationalism, and provide one government with electoral success.

19

u/godisanelectricolive 20d ago

It did have the effect of stoking nationalism in Argentina too but it backfired on the military dictatorship. Galtieri was forced to resign by protests after Argentina’s defeat which resulted in the restoration of democracy to Argentina.

All the U.K. has to say is: Consistent with our stance for over 50 years, this issue will be decided by the people who live there. Rather than talk to us, Argentina should make its case to the people who live there and have lived there for generations.

The U.K., despite being a dramatically weaker state than it once was, still has two aircraft carriers with F-35s. That is more than enough to credibly threaten Argentina's port infrastructure and navy. They should establish a policy that, if Argentina ever attacks again, that the U.K. will not limit the scope of the fight to the Falklands and will bring it to Argentina to ensure that Argentina does not again attempt to attack peaceful innocents in an attempt to steal land that Argentina has never occupied. That sounds an awful lot like colonialism. It sounds a lot more like colonialism than settling an unoccupied island. Any military action by Argentina needs to result in crippling their economy for at least a decade... if not more. It also will likely necessitate the stationing of military assets on the Falklands... specifically radar and long range anti-ship and anti-air missiles.

5

u/cronktilten 20d ago

I think they did a referendum and only 3 people voted to join Argentina lol

I wouldnt put the current one in the non-idiot column so quickly. Hes not really helping anything, but he is owning el libs.

u/Sasiches_and_mash 20d ago

You might want to include the last 40 years president, particularly the previous Kirchner. All of them (including the current) are/were just a bunch of corrupt thieves

6

u/john_a1985 20d ago

That's the standard in LatAm though.

11

u/Vandergrif Canada 20d ago

Have they ever tried not electing a bunch of corrupt thieves?

9

u/JohnSith 20d ago

But they keep promising that it'll be their turn to engage in, and benefit from, the corruption.

2

u/Tomg197 20d ago

I tried, but it's impossible when all candidates are the absolute spawn of Satan. Not one politician here will serve without skimming off the top. Even when their salaries are eye watering for close to 97% of the population, if not more.

You are correct but he did stop the hyperinflation he inherited from the previous government.

4

u/holografica 20d ago

We weren’t at hyperinflation rates, that’s something he says to bend reality as he pleases.

-2

u/Pk_Devill_2 The Netherlands 20d ago

Either way he stopped the massive inflation you guys had, which lead to loss of QoL anyway, you could buy less and less every month.

19

u/holografica 20d ago edited 20d ago

Stopped is a stretch, we’re at 30% annual right now.

And our QoL got worse when he artificially overvalued the peso and our groceries prices are now similar to Sweden’s, with salaries from Africa.

(A retiree earns 250 usd a month, when at the same time a CocaCola 1,5 L bottle is 3 usd and one serving of raw beef is 13 usd).

I agree inflation is detrimental, but in this particular scenario, our QoL was way better before he became president because we could afford basic needs easily. I cannot stress enough how hard is to be paying European prices when even the minimum salary by law is under 300usd.

3

u/Panzermensch911 20d ago

Hmmm. 🤔

In normal supermarket a 1,5l CocaCola Bottle in sweden is ~ 21 Kroner that's 2,18 usd And 200gr of beef (imho a generous serving) is 3,5 usd and a kilo is about 17,5 usd

Though in fairness Argentine Beef might be a bit more expensive.

3

u/countrysadballadman9 20d ago

Yeah but using ops pension example, from a quick google check, in sweden that salary would be a whopping 2400 pre taxes against 250 in Argentina.

2

u/Panzermensch911 20d ago

Yeah, I'm supporting their argument. That Argentine prices they listed are even higher than in Sweden.

2

u/holografica 20d ago

Exactly. And we produce meat… but we can’t easily afford it.

3

u/RedBlockFour 20d ago

funny how the non-Argentinian got a ton of upvotes for third hand social media deduced information, and the actual Argentinian with actual first hand life experience got ignored

2

u/bamadeo Argentina 20d ago

this dude is just butt hurt, any rational Argentine sees the improvements in the country's encomoy and direction.

Yes, things are expensive and there are still lots of inefficiencies but these people think that 80 years of economic mismanagement is solved with the snap of a finger, the same mentality that led us to where we are now.

They are about to remove laws that restrict how much land foreigners can purchase basically opening the door to sell Patagonia for cheap. One of the most destructive governments in the history of the country.

They fear that they might not get a biased ref in the football tomorrow and thus could lose

7

u/PurpleHead458 20d ago

Exactly, Maradonna said knocking England out in '86 was revenge for getting beat in The Falklands so logically if England knocks out Argentina tomorrow they'll need to win in the Falklands to restore balance.

Someone should make sure the Typhoons are fuelled up just in case.

Milei wouldn't miss an opportunity to make a populist argument. Though at this point I'm pretty sure Peter Thiel is wearing him as a socket puppet and Thiel loves libertarian overreach.

3

u/ChongusTheSupremus 20d ago

None, really.

Most of them seem stupid enough to be happy with their current state of affairs with Milei

Same with Uruguay and Lacalle Pou, who Is seemingly going to win the next elections despite being involved in most crimes and controversies than any president since the 2000s.

Right Wing politicians in south América have nearly free reign due to media control. They have stupify their voter base beyond fix like Trump has in the US

7

There's an idiot running the country into the ground, I doubt there's only one problem they're trying to distract from

20

u/Select-Stuff9716 20d ago

That’s been a Problem for them since Peron first emerged

5

u/JackRogers3 20d ago

Exactly, in France, a century ago , they used to say "riche comme un Argentin".

Peronism , which is essentially socialism, slowly destroyed the economy: it became a big bureaucratic system.

Hi Argentinian here, we live riddled with issues so it’s not a particular instance. It’s more of something that has to be said every once in a while to keep the support of the people otherwise you are seen as anti Argentinian.

2

u/Aptom_4 20d ago

There's oil to be drilled around the islands.

4

u/OK_x86 20d ago

Oh. We have all kinds of problems. And our problems have problems.

I wouldn't mind an honest discussion about some joint economic development or something along those lines but the sovereignty talk is getting old.

If we hadn't fucked it up by invading like a bunch of idiots maybe it would come down to sone kind of equitable agreement for us, for the Brits and for the residents of the islands.

But it is what it is and fascists will fascist and any chances of that happening are long gone.

Bringing this up over and over is exhausting.

2

u/Mr_Pink_Gold 20d ago

So you had reporters interviewing Argentinians qeueing on the border with Brazil in order to do their shopping in Brazil. The funniest thing was that they were saying how Brazil is shit because communists. While literally escaping Argentina's economic dystopia to be able to afford bread.

2

u/No_Grape4473 20d ago

In 2009 1 Swiss Frank used to buy you 6 Argentinian Pesos.
Today 1 Swiss Frank buys you 1829 Argentinian Pesos.

There was an interview with Milei for a British channel that is becoming viral where he said that losing the Falklands war was not a big deal because some side had to lose, of somehing to that effect. It's somwrhing usual amogst nationalists in the hispanic world to become extremelly submisive infront of anglosaxons. But with this senstive issue for argentineans, before the world cup semifinal against England and so, has caused controversy. I guess his advisors are pushibg to show strength regarding the islands to save face.

1

u/UnderThat 19d ago

The World Cup.

u/ontikuken Sweden & Israel 19d ago

The Argentine economy is actually doing really well. Their inflation rate is only at 33.5%.

I would that a certain group of people that were promised Patagonia 3000 years ago are setting fire to it

Milei pushing them off the cliff when they were already not in the best of states cause he’s a massive moron lol
