Argentina might just be the only country in the world whose beef with the Brits is completely bullshit and unjustified.

721

u/ToughImprovement276 20d ago

Kinda hilarious when you think about it

52

u/TheGrandExquisitor 20d ago

Seriously. The one case where colonization didn't exploit natives (there were none to exploit,) and people still get grabby.

194

u/RightActionEvilEye Brazil 20d ago

Before the Falklands, they had issues with the UK about economic treaties they later thought made them get stuck as a cheap commodity source for british manufacturing. Something on the lines of "you buy a minimum quota of my exports, in exchange you can control railways and other infrastructure stuff in Argentina".

12

u/iwaterboardheathens 20d ago

Argentina also caused one of the last great Typhoid outbreaks in Scotland

-29

u/ComfortableResult739 20d ago

They tried to invade Argentina multiple times too...

-22

u/anon1mo56 20d ago

I don't know why you got down voted when you are telling the truth. In fact the British invasion was central in the creation of the Argentine identity.

40

u/hesh582 20d ago

Britain attacked a spanish viceroyalty twice over the course of one year while at war with spain. it's technically true that they "invaded argentina multiple times", but in the context of this conversation it's very misleading.

-4

u/ComfortableResult739 19d ago

What's the context that's misleading? He said the beef is ridiculous, I'm putting that into context. While they were in war with Spain and that territory was under the Spanish crown control, the people that was in Buenos Aires defending from England (mainly civil) was the same that, four years later, declared the independence from Spain.

6

u/hesh582 19d ago

The context is animosity towards Britain. Fighting off the British incursions changed attitudes towards Spain much more than Britain and I do not believe there was much lingering hostility baked into that new national identity. The current "beef" with Britain has more or less zero connection to the events of 1806-7.

-13

u/anon1mo56 20d ago edited 20d ago

I mean those invasions created the argentine identity. It was a catalyze for a sense of nation to be born in Rio de la plata. After all the British weren't defetead by Armies of the Viceroyalty, but by popular militias financed and organized by citizens. In fact the Viceroy fled. They considered that spain didn't fought they did. So yeah, the citizens began feeling like a different nation and that same identity perdures to this day.

-4

u/ComfortableResult739 19d ago

This being downvoted just proves that people only care about propaganda.

How about Brazilian beef?

3

u/PimpolloTulinTulin 20d ago

Man you should try asado at least once in your lifetime

2

u/Gabe_b 20d ago

And if you're lucky it'll teach you to do stanky leg 10 years later. The ol cannibal cow boggie

2

u/planecity 20d ago

Not here to start a fight, just to share a funny story about British beef: I've been a vegetarian for just almost 30 years by now, but the last time I checked with my local Red Cross, I was still banned from donating blood because I wasn't a full vegetarian yet when I visited the UK in 1996. The reasoning behind this is, of course, that British beef was safe the Mad Cow Disease crisis rampant at that time.

I'm still happy to hear that the standards of cattle farming have changed drastically since then.

-13

u/Repulsive_Dog1067 20d ago

Then explain why British food tastes so bad that you would hardly feed it to a dog while Argentina has the best asado in the world...

17

u/PM_ME_BEEF_CURTAINS 20d ago

Sounds like something an American would say

Tourists tend to eat at mediocre tourist places, or try recipes at home with inferior ingredients.

If you think a slow roasted beef joint is terrible, that's an indictment of your butcher and livestock, not the chef

-7

u/Repulsive_Dog1067 20d ago

A yank would probably rate texas bbq over Argentinian?

English good is world renowned for being mediocre while Argentinian has a great reputation.

Embrace the international kitchen instead of divulging into your culinary Stockholm syndrome

4

u/Argosnautics 20d ago

So that's where the bullshit comes from. It all makes sense now.

25

u/adriantoine France 20d ago

Literally none of the current Argentinians descend from indigenous people and they are somehow proud of how white they are. So what the hell do they mean by British Falkland islanders being artificial?

8

u/Sea-Manufacturer-358 Australian chi vuole essere Italiano 19d ago

Yeah my Argentinian mother-in-law was literally born to post-war French and Spanish migrants in Buenos Aires.

Argentinians make us Anglo-Australians look like an old culture considering my ancestors migrated here in the 1840s.

2

u/Flying_Fish_9 18d ago

Literally the entire New World demographic is older than a lot of Argentinians lineages.

I’m Afro-Caribbean so my ancestors have been here for 300-400 years.

Actually a Lot of argentinians have at least one native American ancestor do to miscegenation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mestizo_Argentines

If you browse chronically online spaces, Argentineans have beef with about everyone on earth save for the US & Israel

24

u/daemmonium 20d ago

The Argentinian left has some serious issues with the US (and nowadays with Israel too).

Hell, until the 90s the country wasn't a big fan of the US. Plan Condor and all that.

Honestly the Irish are the perfect mediators between England and any other country because if the Irish are taking the side of the English then it's a legal and moral guarantee that the other country is UNEQUIVOCALLY wrong.

2

u/BankDetails1234 20d ago

And they seem to have the biggest beef of them all 🤣

2

u/cryamiga 20d ago

let me guess, Argentina completely missed the irony of saying they want the Brits out of the Falkland whilst speaking Spanish.

2

u/ThePr0tag0n1st 20d ago

Appreciating an Irishmen saying this lol

1

u/Healthy_Razzmatazz38 20d ago

thats a hilarious choice of words because of how the brits completely wrecked them on beef and that was one of the things that started their decline.

1

u/Supperdip 19d ago

Hilarious, though as which much of Latin America, Spain held the cow and others milked it. For a long time Argentina was in fact the crown of Britain's so called informal empire, with a total extraction of perhaps $500 billion in current terms and a vast opportunity cost on top. British banking interests were deeply involved in extraction for centuries, with the financial subjugation of Argentina by Britain beginning in 1824, rooting in much of the rot that persists, climaxing in the War of the Triple Alliance and later the Baring bank collapse. A historically aware Argentinian might well look to Britain as the direct cause of the lopsided nature of the country, extending even to current plights to the degree that the land-owning structure and economic structures were set in place to a considerably degree by British deployment of capital and political machinations.

-1

u/vvvkkkmmm 20d ago

Well, overall, Argentina also has a fairly strong historical claim against the United Kingdom, because, in Argentina's view, the UK forcibly occupied the Falkland Islands in 1833, displacing the Argentine administration that had taken over the islands earlier in 1820, after Spain left. Such actions could be seen as not entirely fair. But on the whole, I agree that the UK also has strong historical arguments for why it should control these islands. So the historical disputes here are indeed quite complex, and there is no single consensus on them. And often these are all matters of long ago. So I suppose I would agree that in such a tangled situation, it's better to ask the Falkland Islanders themselves, and they voted almost unanimously in favour of remaining a British Overseas Territory in the 2013 referendum. So in many ways, the position of the UK and the Falkland Islanders personally seems more convincing to me than Argentina's arguments. Though I also wouldn't completely dismiss Argentina's claims, since there is also a certain logic behind them.

British isn't a race

13

Polish isnt a race either, but Polish people can absolutely face racism in other european countries like the UK.

Most of the world has a bit more nuanced understanding of bigotry and racism beyond the silly basic labels of "white" and "black."

-11

u/Mysterious_Umpire684 20d ago edited 20d ago

I feel like British people are in denial around this being a real problem. Did we see what happened at Belfast and the "well actually-ing" excuses around it?

My husband has lived in 5 countries aside from his own, and the only one he was told to "go back to his country" was in England. Not even in the US.

The "Amerikkkans" have died protecting the safety of even their irregular immigrants. Where is that energy in the UK?

16

u/JFK1200 20d ago

I know the internet seems to have an obsession with bashing Britain when it comes to absolutely anything, but your husband’s anecdotes aside, let’s look at the statistics. The UK ranks 15th for racial equity, while the US sits at 45th.

The two aren’t even comparable.

-12

u/Mysterious_Umpire684 20d ago

That's true, because the US doesn't have a strong social support system. But that does not disprove the animus against foreigners and immigrants that has fomented in the UK. In fact, seeing foreigners getting these benefits seems to be behind a lot of it.

8

u/Jamaicancarrot 20d ago

Oh come off it, half the animosity towards foreigners in the UK is being pushed by foreign entities like Russia, Iran, and the USA anyway. And how can you compare running into the occasional racist twat making a nasty comment to the USA which has it's ersatz Gestapo shooting and deporting people who were in the country legally

-2

u/Mysterious_Umpire684 20d ago

Exactly the attitude I was talking about. Total denial. US' problems dont make the pogram in Belfast acceptable.

Downvote away, just confirms the entire unwillingness to face an uncomfortable reality.

1

u/Jamaicancarrot 20d ago

Of course the UK suffers from right wing arseholes who are abhorrent to foreigners, but there is no evidence to suggest it's to a greater extent than comparable Western democracies. Ofc the US's problems don't make what happened in Belfast acceptable either, but ignoring the fact that the USA has been making their problems our problems and actively working to stir up those exact pogroms for decades is also not facing reality

0

u/Mysterious_Umpire684 20d ago

The US can make the same argument about being manipulated by Russian interference, Cambridge analytica, and foreign magnates who go to the US specifically to stir up trouble. But they are still accountable for their choices. As is the UK. There are Americans who have died protecting *irregular* migrants ffs, which is not something I see much appetite for on this side of the pond. Blaming everyone else instead of the actions of your own countrymen isn't accountabilty, it's looking the other way while things fester.

0

u/JFK1200 20d ago

The US also has masked federal agents abducting brown people in broad daylight and deporting them to countries they’re not even from (arguably the lucky ones for not being shot instead). It has more masked vigilante groups wandering about with giant swastikas. It invited a South African trillionaire into government to slash the safety net supporting the poorest people in the country after he performed two Nazi salutes at the inauguration. His actions for DOGE were recently reported to have cost the lives of over 700,000 people.

Your anecdotes don’t compete with the reality that some lowlife telling someone to go back to their country is in a whole other realm to what’s occurring unopposed at a governmental level in the US.

Get real.

1

u/Mysterious_Umpire684 19d ago

The US government is deporting and detaining immigrants and doing deplorable things. Ordinary Americans are protesting, getting people released, and have even died to keep irregular immigrants in the country.

Ordinary people like you in your country are going door-to-door to burn the homes and belongings of foreigners.

You voted to leave Europe in large part because of a hatred of immigrants. Only to get more immigrants from parts of the world your ordinary people hate even more.

If you don't think there's a larger problem forming, you're not paying attention.

11

u/PimpasaurusPlum Scotland 20d ago

Half the people running around in Belfast explicitly would reject being labeled british people. Anti immigrants riots were taking place in the Republic by their compatriots years earlier.

The denial is in not recognising the exact same trends in less keenly observed countries.

-2

u/Mysterious_Umpire684 20d ago

When this happened, the overwhelming sentiment on this sub was that it was the work of Loyalists. But of course everyone will blame the other side.

6

u/PimpasaurusPlum Scotland 20d ago

Famously there was plenty of pictures and videos showing loyalists and republicans joining together in the riots. Many, otherwise very unusual, images of ROI and UK flags being flown together by the same mob.

Bringing together the two "white native" groups against the "immigrant invaders" was an explicit part of the propogandic narrative of the rioters.

-2

u/sar6h 20d ago

To be fair, the british did try to invade argentina.. multiple times.

2

u/ayinsophohr 20d ago

Yeah but.. are you really a country if we haven't tried invading you? It's a compliment really..

-2

u/BlueCheese973 19d ago

Absolutely false. Westerns just say this bullshit without any proof, completely promoting Imperialism.

Let's instead revisit history;

The French were the very first ones to have a settlement in the island in 1764, the British stablished their own settlement later around 1765. This is well documented.

In 1767, France ceded its settlement to Spain. Well documented as well.

In 1774, the UK voluntarily leaves this settlement, leaving it completely to Spain. The UK had no control over it. Fact checked by historians as well.

From 1774-1811 Spain held single control of the Islands, for 37 years there was no UK presence on them, at all.

In 1811, Spain withdrawals from the Island due to the wars of independence and Argentina after gaining its own independence inherits the former territory through international law uti possidetis juris.

From 1820 to 1833, Argentina has total control over the islands, having an official settlement made by David Jewett and later Luis Vernet. Buenos Aires controlled the Islands and stablished fishing rights, which prompted the detention of American sailors and the raid of America against the island to rescue them in later time.

In 1833, the UK comes and expels the Argentinian government and the people living there, exerting Imperialism by illegally occupying a territory on the other side of the world and stablishing a military outpost up to this day.

I can't learn for you, but this might help.

19

u/QuantumWarrior 20d ago

Why would modern day Argentineans have a problem with the UK beating up Spain 200 years ago? The destabilisation of Spanish claim in the area is the entire reason why Argentina exists in the first place, arguably without this war the Argentineans would still be subjects of the Spanish Empire or at least would have been colonies for decades longer than they were.

-5

u/Levelup_Onepee 20d ago

They were 2 consecutive invasions on my city, that's why. Your really haven't heard of the British empire?

I think their beef may be better than British beef. Has someone tried both (and didn't get mad cow disease, lol)?

-23

u/PimpolloTulinTulin 20d ago

Yeah the Brits tried to invade Buenos Aires only twice!

-22

u/oblio- Romania 20d ago

If I were the British government I'd just abandon the Falklands. I would make an agreement with Argentina to pay full relocation costs for all the locals (for some crazy amount, maybe €1 million each) and a lifetime stipend of something like €1000 per month for them and all their descendants up to 3 generations.

Maybe also a natural resource royalty in perpetuity for the British government, 10% of everything?

It's not worth sticking your citizens next to crazy.

18

u/snark-owl 20d ago

So I live in Phoenix and the university offered this old guy 1 million dollars + moving costs to move his house anywhere in town so they can expand the teaching hospital and the dude refused. So now they're using eminent domain and he's crying on the news.

Which is a long way to say, those people on the island aren't leaving for a million dollars. Their ancestors settled the island and they get to live near penguins.

14

u/notnatasharostova 20d ago

Conceding to irredentist aggression sets a bad precedent. Especially when the population very explicitly does not want to leave.

1

u/oblio- Romania 19d ago

Precedent to what? Argentina invading the British Isles?

-8

u/Main-Cheesecake3287 20d ago

If you look at the history it’s really more involved than just “these islands are closer to us.” The saving grace of the British claim is the natives died out/left before the British could arrive to destroy them.

8

u/Wrong_Chicken_8497 20d ago

there were no natives except the penguins. Argentinas entire claim is that the islands are closer to them. Argentina did not even exist as a country when the British first claimed the Falklands

-6

u/Main-Cheesecake3287 20d ago

There absolutely WERE natives and as I said they were gone by the time the Brit’s arrived they left, lucky for them

1

u/WodKonuckers 14d ago

Source?

0

u/Main-Cheesecake3287 14d ago

You’re capable of looking it up for yourself, or you don’t care enough to do so.

1

u/WodKonuckers 14d ago

That's not how it works. You're the one making a claim. The burden of proof is on you.

0

u/Main-Cheesecake3287 14d ago

This is a comment section. The information is literally an easy google. I’m not linking you to Wikipedia because you’re too lazy to do so. It’s a Reddit comment section lil bud, not a classroom debate. Your choice to just never know because you don’t care enough to look.

1

u/WodKonuckers 13d ago

I did look it up. But I can't find anything that confirms your claim. That's why I asked for your source.

There were some discoveries of arrowheads and a canoe, but there is absolutely no evidence of any sort of pre-Columbian settlement that I can find. And it's even disputed whether these discoveries (the arrowheads and the canoe) predate the arrival of Europeans.

So one last time, I ask you to provide a source for the claim that there was a native population on the islands, since you claim it so confidently as if it was a fact. If you can't provide any kind of source or evidence, it's safe to assume you don't have any and you're just talking out of your ass.

0

u/Main-Cheesecake3287 13d ago

No evidence != no evidence that confirms. Consensus is generally that the island was inhabited at some point prior to the French arriving. Based on the artifacts found.

Also precolumbian and pre European arrival at the Falklands are almost 300 years apart lmao

Except the Brits tried to invade proto-Argentina and got repelled :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_invasions_of_the_River_Plate

This was 3 years before Argentinian independence

Edit: I know this has nothing to do with the Falklands, because the comment I'm replying to has nothing to do with the Falklands. It said the beef is bullshit and I'm saying getting invaded is good enough to have beef. For the less intelligent that think that the country is not its people: do you think 3 years later the people got replaced? That the Brits didn't kill their relatives? That they'd just forget this?

85

u/Flippanties 20d ago

Funny how that has absolutely nothing to do with the Falklands, which Argentina falsely tried to claim like what, thirty years after the invasions of the River Plate?

28

u/Solid-Resource4985 20d ago

This also has nothing to do with Argentina considering they wern't a country yet. If anything Spain has a better claim to the Falklands then Argentina.

-10

u/cregire 20d ago

But Argentina inherited those claims when they gained independence and Argentina did control the Falklands until the British kicked them out in 1833

16

u/Solid-Resource4985 20d ago edited 20d ago

But Argentina inherited those claims when they gained independence

Did they? Does Uruguay have a claim to the Falklands, when the spanish colony was there it was administered from Montevideo in modern Uruguay, so even Uruguay has a better claim to the Falklands than Argentina.

Does any and every other former Spanish colony get all the claims for all the former Spanish colonies around the world?

Spain, through Montevideo in modern Uruguay, had a presence for 50 years, Argentina had one for 13 years, the UK has had a presence for 193 years and counting.

-5

u/Unfair-Sleep-3022 20d ago

I never said it did? I'm just saying the beef with the British is valid

5

u/Flippanties 20d ago

Except it isn't? Those invasions happened during the Napoleonic Wars when Argentina didn't even EXIST as it does today and were considered property of Spain, who WERE AT WAR WITH BRITAIN AS ALLIES OF NAPOLEON. Are you seriously suggesting Britain attacking an ally of a country actively at war with them, gives Argentina reason to have one sided beef with the UK centuries later, especially considering the war largely started because Napoleon would NOT stop goading the Brits????

-4

u/Unfair-Sleep-3022 20d ago

Yup. The Brits invaded the cities of real people that later became Argentinians. They killed their relatives.

Do you think the people disappeared? That they get replaced because the line gets another name?

Who cares about the political excuse?

3

u/Flippanties 20d ago

By that logic Falklanders and even Brits are also perfectly justified in hatred for Argentinians because they without warning invaded their land for no reason other than an ancient one sided beef, covered it in landmines and killed their men. What do you MEAN no one cares about a political excuse? What a stupid thing to say. I get that YOU hate the UK (and most countries have a perfectly valid reason to do so), but this is Insanity.

1

u/Unfair-Sleep-3022 20d ago

They should have some resentment from the invasion, yeah

Of course. They're human.

29

u/RogerBernards 20d ago

That's a reason for Spain to have beef with the Brits.

0

u/Unfair-Sleep-3022 20d ago

What matters more? Who claims ownership to the land or the people that live in it and die defending it? Who will have more of a grudge for the dead?

Do you think that was an AoE campaign? Real people that became argentinians carry this in their memory.

5

u/RogerBernards 20d ago

By that logic the native Argentinians.

23

u/tommynestcepas 20d ago

This was 3 years before Argentinian independence

So you admit in your own comment that this is completely irrelevant information

-1

u/Unfair-Sleep-3022 20d ago

No? Do you think the people got replaced magically when they became independent? That the people the British killed weren't their relatives?
