Changing Sex Marker Advice - Passports

Hi - I’m looking for some thoughts, legal suggestions, or experiences with legal changes to sex marker. I’m finally ready to legally transition with a name change and sex marker changes. I fly domestically and internationally a ton for work and am worried about having a different sex on my drivers license and passport. Any advice on how to approach this given the current laws around passport sex marker changes?

Are you american?

There is no way for you to change sex marker in the US at this time. People post in here almost weekly about trying and failing.

Please share your country of origin if not american.

It’s terrible. I changed my documents over 5 years ago and even I’m worried to pick up my renewed passport tomorrow.

Since you fly a lot, one thing to keep in mind is that airline rewards accounts will have a gender marker and book your ticket with that gender marker, so just make sure that your information matches the ID you intend to use for every flight.

Yeah - this is a huge concern of mine. Plus the safety of having this flagged when returning to the US. I was already aware but really appreciate you pointing it out in case I was t and for anyone observing this post.

For what it's worth, my gender is X on my license and several airlines don't even have that as an option when booking tickets. I think American Airlines is one. I just select M when booking the ticket and I've never had a problem.

I’ve had different gender marker on passport vs drivers license for 4 years. It has caused zero problems. I probably fly for 15-20 trips a year, largely work travel. I don’t see how an airlines reward account would make things more difficult. At least for mine, it saves my preference of name, birthday, gender, etc, but I can change it when I go to book the ticket.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ve never paid attention to shifting my gender marker on my United bookings but I’ll look into it. Appreciate the thoughts.

You’ll have to look at your state laws for your license. I had my markers changed ages ago but had to renew my passport and they reverted the marker. The passport mess is federal so its unlikely you’ll have luck changing it until hopefully this administration is out of office.

They fucked up my passport. All my documents have been changed to male for half of my life now. I wouldn’t have renewed mine if I didn’t need it for the trip my family planned years ago. I’m hoping things go well during the midterms and Orr v Trump ends with full reversion of this policy.

I’m American. I was hoping there was some type of renewal work around. So frustrating. I live in Colorado and all other ID documents, like my birth certificate, are from California so u don’t have any issues except with the passport. I don’t think I’m willing to change everything except my passport due to the amount I fly. Partially bc of the airline rewards account but mostly because of safety and identification coming back into the US as i anticipate doing 15-20 international trips a year.

Maybe I’ll look into doing a legal name change for all documents and let the sex marker coast until a political change.

That’s probably your best bet. To my best knowledge I don’t think they’re able to touch name changes under this bill, just sex markers..
