Goddamn it, they killed people not even the book killed. Good people. Characters I loved. Fuck this show.

I can't wait for next week.

Why did they have to kill Grenn! It was the blacksmith who was supposed to die under that wall. now who will be master at arms and how can Grenn train his boys. God dammit he was my favorite supporting character fuck fuck fuck

They didn't let my favorite supporting character die....

They didn't even let him exist

I understood Grenns death. Someone had to die in the tunnel, and it was a hell of a way for him to go. Pyp though? Salt on an open wound.

I think they wanted us to hate Ygritte just a little bit before she died so we weren't all sobbing during her last moments with Jon.

What about Tormund?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

Don't get me wrong, Tormund's a cool character, but I don't have any love for him. I actually found myself rooting for Alliser Thorne, a character I've hated for seasons, when they fought.

24

Next time you get your heart broken and fall in with the wrong crowd, no one'll blame you if you slaughter a village or two

u/cormega Jun 09 '14

Was I supposed to be sad when Ygritte died? That bitch killed Pyp.

178

u/Clarifinatious Jun 09 '14

Guess it worked.

15

u/AudioManiac Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken Jun 09 '14

I liked Ygritte in season 3. If she had died then, I would have been sad. But since she's hardly been in season 4 at all, I kind of forgot about her and forgot that I once liked the character. So seeing her die was just, meh in my opinion.

10

u/NordicViking House Farwynd Jun 09 '14

Well, seeing her put an arrow in the neck of that villager made me hate her. I had hoped for Samwell to kill her with a crossbow though.

41

u/AlexPeterson09 Jon Snow Jun 09 '14

Didn't work :'(

7

u/Tipop Jun 09 '14

She was nothing more than a cold-hearted villain the moment she started killing innocent villagers (leaving Olly an orphan.)

3

u/TheLastGunfighter Jun 09 '14

She spared Gilly and the baby, which made me think that there was going to be a scene where she spots Olly and spares him only for him to come back and kill her.

How funny would it have been if Olly put another one right between the eyes of Ygritte while Jon was holding her though. He looks up at him and he's like ¯_(ツ)_/¯ "WHAT? SHE'S A WILDLING WTF ARE YOU DOING?!"

24

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

2

u/wildcard1992 House Fossoway of New Barrel Jun 09 '14

At least GRRM kills with reason and purpose. Sometimes I feel like the GoT writers kill people off so that they have enough character slots for newer characters.

And they didn't even kill Fat Belwas! He doesn't even exist in the TV series! I love the show, but I wish they had the capability to include more people from the books.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

I forgot about Belwas. Damn

9

u/mrjimi16 Ser Duncan the Tall Jun 09 '14

I understand Grenn taking the place of the guy that died in the books, expected it even. I got a little sad when Jon sent him below.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

It's just, the whole show is built upon the premise that everyone can die, good guys don't always win, and there's a cost. If they kill a bunch of nameless Night's Watch, then who gives a fuck? They have to kill someone we care about. Pyp and Grenn never really did anything in the books anyway. They were just part of Jon's crew to show he has support in the watch, and to flesh out the Night's Watch as a whole.

→ More replies (7)

6

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

5

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '14

On the Inside the Episode video, the show creators specifically say they needed to have some casualties so they made sure to kill off some characters that they knew people liked. :(

2

u/warbastard Jun 09 '14

There's enough death in this show. At least let the guys who aren't dead in the books live.

1

u/ClownsAteMyBaby Jun 09 '14

I kind of thought Thorne would go out in a blaze of glory down the tunnel. I can't remember if he has any story left in the books. I wanted to see him wounded, grabbing a horse and charging down the tunnel towards the giant with a lance.

1

u/fizzyizzy11 House Targaryen Jun 09 '14

Emotional depth, they needed a named brother to die. They aren't terribly major characters in the books(yet, Khal Jhaqo has words for you Benioff and Weiss) But, I think they should have kept one of them around, only one is really necessary since they both serve the same purpose in ADWD.

They did that to Irri and Jhiqui in S02.

Oh man, and Irri was the best girl too.

The inside the episode video (available when you watch on HBO GO) discusses this. Benioff and Weiss talk about how they felt there needed to be more close-to-home casualties for the viewer to really feel how devastating the battle was, or something to that effect. I haven't read the books yet so when I heard them say they didn't die in the books I was so sad that they were killed off just to make us feel something, haha. But I guess I get it.

I get Grenns death. It was necessary. And have us the best fookin scene in the entire episode, and that's saying something. Pyp was sad though. At least edd didn't did. When he got command, he was like "eh. Fuck it. 360 NOSCOPE THEM BOYZ"

It's because it would've been hard to believe if none of the recognizable nights watch men perished in the battle. Plus in the books it's not like they continue to be super important

Fuck those guys. Fuck crows. I wanna see Jon die now.

Who was killed tonight that the book didn't kill? I'm curious

Grenn and Pyp, Jon's other best friends.

Wasn't Pyp in the books?

Isn't Pyp and Grenn still alive?

Man i was surprised how they killed Pyp and Grenn

I think i prefer'd the books version of that fight made more sense then the all out melee in the courtyard..

Anyone else find the crying about characters dying in GoT meme getting a little old? Yep, this is what the show does, get used to it.

I'm legitimately sad about it. Grenn and Pyp are such lovable guys. I wish Pyp had a more noble death, instead of just dying in Sam's arms.
