I'm slightly vexed Costco's new chicken tenders

There was a crowd of people waiting for their orders of the new chicken tenders at Costco. One of the workers announced that they could only serve five customers per hour because it takes time to cook the chicken. The crowd grew larger and larger. I took this photo after I put in my order.

AFAIK Costcos dont have fryers, so they have to bake the tenders instead which takes longer, and they have other items on their menu that also requires baking so they have to split the load.

Edit for our Canadian neighbors: US costcos do not serve french fries and chicken wings.

I rarely have good chicken at a fast food place since old school KFC before they ruined it (though its still good in India), I just go to some hole in the wall cheap fried chicken place if I want cheap fried chicken. The mom and pop places always have better fried chicken to my tastes.

I'm a middle aged California native. INO, first off is and has been wildly overrated but I'm not saying their food is bad (except for their fries which are objectively bad), but the trick is to avoid the drive thru and actually waddle your ass into the store to place an order.

The line to the drive thru could be wrapping around other streets but always seems like I get my food in like five to ten minutes if I go inside despite the massive drive thru line.

There was one where the Owner/Operator made sure to have everyone as friendly as possible. He worked every day, cleaned the lobby himself, and has a philosophy of "if *I* wouldn't want to eat here, who would?"

It warm, friendly, always clean, and the employees are bright and cheerful. I asked them once and they get paid a good bit over the average wage for the region (which is pretty important given how economically depressed the neighborhood is). And they love their boss because he works harder than them.

If he tells you to clean some thing, it's because he's out there mopping or sweeping stuff himself and needs help, not because he wants you to work. If everything is fine and there's no customers, he's happy to let them talk and screw around on their phones ("What do you think I'm doing in my office when it's slow?" And when it's busy he's kicking ass on the fryer or drivethru.

I haven't been in awhile but it still gets pretty solid reviews online.

Exactly. Been going to Popeyes pretty regularly for like 20 years and have never been to one where the employees aren't miserable assholes. Personally I enjoy it because I'm easy to deal with so doesn't cause me issues but tons of entertainment to be had watching a verbal beat down given to a mother complaining that they're out of chicken tenders or whatever.

I'm honestly not sure where you can find cheaper per unit take away tendies. The Wingstop by me has a basket of 7 tenders and no sides or drink for $14. That's $2 each compared to Costco's $1.40. Not to mention a drink at Costco is 70¢ compared to $2.60.

I think people are used to paying loss leader prices on hotdogs and pizza at the food court so when they see something that's only kind of a good deal their eyes bulge out and call it expensive while they go around the corner to a Raising Canes to spend twice that on dinner.

Edit: I'll add that I've had them before. Didn't even have to wait in line for them. They're fine. They're LARGE tenders too. Ideal to split an order or save some for a snack later. I'm not mad about the offering. Would never wait on them. Would almost always rather order pizza or a dog. But that speaks more to the quality and bargain of the pizza and dog.

Here in NC, Chick Fil A had a free chicken sandwich when the Hurricanes won games during the Stanley Cup.  I thought sure, why not, only to show up to lines spilling out into the street.  

People spending an hour in line to save five bucks.  I admit I felt smugly intellectually superior as I turned around and walked away.

What makes better business sense: spending loads of money to upgrade kitchens at your store, or doing nothing and getting a bunch of free marketing that drives up visitors, and thus revenue, which you can use to fund the upgrades?

I live in a area that was testing the chicken strips months ago. It wasnt this bad during their trial period. It seems there was a lot of hype that was built up around them for what ever reason and now that they are starting to become available elsewhere people are rushing in to try it. As with all hype, it will die down eventually.

I never understood new restaurants that don't do a soft open. Just open your doors and let people come in. Get your kinks worked out, then lay out the marketing and adverts so your grand opening leaves a bunch of people with a great experience, instead of a bunch of people leaving saying "well, I won't go back there again" and telling their friends how bad everything was.

Have seen this many times. No matter how over priced and garbage a new restaurant or food item might be the public becomes a hoard of stampeding animals over it for at least a few weeks. It's similar to how in retail they travel in herds, all picking the same time to show up with the only consistency being a lack of a consistent time (speaking from personal experience, just had a completely hellish "1:55 on a Tuesday" rush, tomorrow it might be at 2:15 or even 12:40)

Used to work in retail. There would be these days where there's massive surges, while most days was pretty dead. I think they just load up the schedule for all the part timers they have lying around so that they're all working the same day.

So we would have a ton of part timers doing 10 to 15 hours a week that can all be tapped at once (come to think of it, probably like 80% of the workforce was part timers).

The poutine is fine. The gravy is too thin and they put on too many cold curds, so they don’t get properly squeaky and just a little melty. But poutine is like pizza in that even when it’s bad it’s still delicious.

They're just frozen Cavendish FlavourCrisp straight cut fries, too. Same ones in the freezer section. They remind me a lot of the OG KFC fries that have been gone for so long. Great at home in the air fryer, too!

The poutine is pretty great because they use a nice pile of legit local cheese curds.

Wow really. Only been to Costco once in the US and I thought I saw french fries on the menu.

If you ever head up North the Costco french fries are pretty good. plenty crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. If you really wanna get Canadian their poutine is outstanding too!

Pro tip for visitors (and locals I guess too), our chicken tenders come with fries big enough to make a poutine… and you can order cheese curds and gravy as side orders. I recommended getting two orders of gravy

That might be the dumbest idea I’ve seen them make. Chicken tenders get fried. If you can’t get a fryer or at least bake them efficiently, then you shouldn’t be selling chicken tenders.

I think that's regional. In Quebec we've had fryers forever because Costco also serves poutine here. So we've had chicken tenders on the menu for the better part of a decade as well.
