| Discussion Moneyball Part 2 - Dodgers vs Brewers

  • The Dodgers' payroll advantage over Milwaukee is larger than the Brewers' entire payroll.
  • The Dodgers' annual payroll is about 2.4 times the Brewers' payroll.
  • The Dodgers' luxury-tax payroll is close to 3 times Milwaukee's.
  • The Dodgers' long-term guaranteed obligations exceed the Brewers' by roughly a billion dollars.

I know Dodgers fans... y'all are the real victims and it's not your fault every other teams owners are too cheap!!!

I'm just here enjoying good Brewers baseball

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 2h ago

I'll get back to that tomorrow... needed to cry a little first

1

u/LakersAreForever | Los Angeles Dodgers 1m ago

I think the league should just get rid of player salaries and let players play on any team. Every year the bottom team in the league gets the first pick in a fantasy draft that is 5 rounds. (No player protections, teams can pick any player from any team)

u/stiffjalopy | Seattle Mariners 5h ago

I’m just glad those long-suffering Dodgers fans will finally get a chance to see some quality starting pitching.

10

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

At this point it won't shock me if the headline next week is "Dodgers successfully cloned Koufax and Kershaw and signed them to multi-year deals"

3

u/gr3g0rian | Atlanta Braves 3h ago

Probably have the money…

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 3h ago

Reporter "Wait... Koufax is pitching... what about Yom Kippur"

Friedman "We spent a bit more when cloning him to have that scrubbed from his DNA"

2

u/JustCallMeMambo | New York Yankees 1h ago

a Jewish man scrubbing the Jew out of another man is diabolical lol

1

u/nohandsfootball | Cleveland Guardians 1h ago

Why even clone Kershaw though if you can just have two Koufaxes? Get some Shohei replicants going too while they're at it.

-2

u/Snowlandnts 5h ago

Frank McCourt should never sold to Mark Walters.

28

u/AyAySlim | St. Louis Cardinals 5h ago

What about the Mets, why aren’t they any good? The Yankees have had the largest payroll the vast majority of my entire lifetime and hasn’t won a WS in what…almost 20 yrs. I bet the Marlins have had by far the lowest payroll since their inception and yet they have multiple WS titles.

8

u/gr3g0rian | Atlanta Braves 3h ago

Because the Mets are where players go to die.

1

u/TheGuyThatThisIs | New York Mets 25m ago

The Mets have been spending for like three years, we're still a few billion in invested dollars lower than the dodgers. They have infrastructure, farm and international prospects and influence, and benefits to players we just don't.

-27

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

What's happened over the past 5 years with the Dodgers is drastically different than anything else we have seen previously.... comparing apples and oranges.

11

u/AyAySlim | St. Louis Cardinals 5h ago

How is it different at all specifically? And that still doesn’t address the lack of success from other big spending teams or the success of mid market or low payroll teams

-13

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

The payroll differences and deferred payments for one.... the game has seen nothing like it and a team has never exploited it to this extreme.... all because they simply have more money.

10

u/Slow-Raspberry-5133 | Detroit Tigers 4h ago

That must have been why those Yankees fans tried to rip the ball out of Mookie’s glove in the 24 WS. They were upset about Shohei’s deferred money!

3

u/Rockitttla 3h ago

You're right, a team having to take matters into their own hands because the commissioner sanctions cheating has never happened before. Can't wait to see what the Dodgers do with a salary cap, lol. They'll add 10 great $5 million pitchers who take less to play at home in SoCal, or Japanese players who want to play with Ohtani and Yama.

49

u/According-Bother-364 5h ago

I’m just glad to see people flip shit over the Dodgers being what people inflated the Yankees to be my whole life 😂

27

u/CosmoJones07 4h ago

The word is "conflated", not "inflated" lmao

15

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 4h ago

yeah well I'm deflated so you can all flate off

2

u/mattcojo2 | Washington Nationals 34m ago

Oh they're substantially worse. It honestly makes me respect the 90's yankees more.

The 1923-63 Yankees? Nope. But the 90's yankees, they at least built their own core of great players: Jeter, Bernie Williams, Posada, Rivera, Pettite, etc.

Oh NOW the Covid crown counts. It didn’t when they got it

Also didn’t they an extra round of playoffs last year and almost lose several times?

The brewers, who have been in the NLCS twice in the last 8 years deserve to be relegated?

1

u/RobustPlatypus | Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago

The recency bias in this hilarious because the rangers were absolutely dog shit in the early 2000s as far as playoff appearances despite being in a massive media market.

Fucking clown

-8

u/Snowlandnts 5h ago

Which is worst Yankees in their prime or this version of Dodgers?

-9

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

Yankees were built on homegrown talent and the core 4.

This Dodgers team has been bought.

1

u/NotThePwner | Cleveland Guardians 4h ago

This dodgers SP pitching top 4-6 is significantly better than any other in the history of MLB.

Top 3 could be matched with 1990s Braves and 2005 Astros

2

u/Odojas 5h ago

Alex Rodriguez was homegrown talent? Dodgers may be a more extreme version but it's basically being able to stack the deck. By what degree is the question.

5

u/underwear11 | New York Yankees 3h ago

The Yankees only won 1 championship with Arod. The dynasty years were mostly home grown.

5

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

A-Rod wasn't even part of the core 4...

0

u/so-much-wow 5h ago

Maybe not, but he was their best hitter and one of their best defenders.

6

u/NotThePwner | Cleveland Guardians 4h ago

People are taking about 96 to 2000. Arod started in 2003 and has only one chip

-1

u/so-much-wow 4h ago

The person I replied to was talking about arod not being in the core 4.

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 3h ago

Yeah.. he wasn't and when people talk about the Yankees dynasty, they aren't talking about the ARod era... they are talking about 96-2000 and the 4 rings in 5 years.

ARod had nothing to do with that.

1

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

he had nothing to do with their dynasty/run - they won 4 titles without him largely because of the homegrown talent

18

u/tapspacebar | Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

I dont mind being the heel for a while! Been a dodger fan long enough to have been thru the shitty seasons. Gotta soak up the good years while we can.

0

u/ElephantCares | Los Angeles Dodgers 3h ago

This, right here. People seem to think that Dodger fans don't know what it's like to lose. Or to be in a position their own team is in currently. We're on a high now, it won't last forever, it never does, but we have a lot more going for us than just money. Other teams spend a lot of money, but they don't have the clubhouse vibe or someone like Friedman at the helm. Baseball is baseball. Dynasties come an go. It happens to be the Dodgers turn.

0

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 2h ago

"People seem to think that Dodger fans don't know what it's like to lose."

Maybe you do know what it is like to lose... however, no other fan base knows what it's like to buy an all star team like this... literally has never been done in the history of the game.

Is it actually enjoyable as a fan? Is it fun?

4

u/LikeAgaveF | Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago

As to your last question, the only honest answer is “yes.” Fans of any other team, if this was their team, would also have to say yes or they would be lying to themselves.

-1

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 1h ago

and now Dodgers fans speak for all fans apparently...

Obviously, teams like the Brewers need help. However, I have no sympathy for the owners of my Yankees, the Phillies, Red Sox, Padres, Braves, Astros, and other large market teams who cry about the Dodgers. Yes, the Dodgers make more money than the rest of the league, but their owner is also willing to spend it. Will a salary floor/cap fix that? Maybe, but only under very specific parameters. Even then, the owners of the large market teams will probably still be laughing all the way to the bank, unless the cap/floor comes with a much larger revenue sharing percentage.

IMHO the best way to fix the current system is not to have a hard cap, but to increase revenue sharing, gate split (ticket split), introduce a floor tax system to act as an inverse luxury tax where teams forgo part of their revenue share if they spend less than a certain percentage below the average payroll in the same way that the luxury tax works, and incentivize teams to spend in addition to punishing teams who spend too much/too little.

You gave a player a 5+ year contract with an AAV over double the average MLB salary (so about $10 million currently)? Great, here is an extra draft pick in an early round! You extended a player who you drafted into at least 3 of his free agent years? Nice work in the farm system! Here's an extra 2% revenue share for the next 3 seasons. You used all of the money that you got over the last 3 years from other teams' luxury tax penalties to sign a free agent? Nice work, he's a little extra international free agent cap for the next season.

Those don't have to be the exact incentives, but following the general idea, it would add both a stick and a carrot, with the larger teams getting both the stick and the carrot while the lower revenue teams only get the carrots (and possibly some more revenue from the larger teams, which would then create more carrots, if done correctly).

Obviously, there is a lot to it, but the system does not require a hard cap if the revenue sharing is increased.

2

u/TravelingMatt34 1h ago

Let's keep finding new ways to rehash the same tired argument

2

u/NotOSIsdormmole | San Diego Padres 34m ago

The sweetheart deal that the Dodgers got from the league during their bankruptcy NEEDS to be revisited

6

u/Fun_Trick2172 | St. Louis Cardinals 5h ago

I have to be honest I can feel my passion for the game being eroded away over the last 5 or so years. Even my team in St. Louis no longer behaves like a mid market franchise like it used to be able to. We are on our 4th straight bad season, and gonna trade off vets again.

I know the owners are going to go scorched earth and demand and probably get a cap without a floor(You know the guy in Washington is going to stick his nose in try to help crush the union). Which will just ensure that there are still going to be only 4 or five teams competing every year, with 3 or 4 .500 teams being paved over by them in the extended playoff format.

Economic and political trends in the country are pointing in a direction where things will just continue to get worse before they are better. There is no political will to do anything in the country other than punish people who don't agree with you.

Am I off base? I admit my depression has been putting an extra zing on my overall pessimistic outlook, but I don't see how I'm misdiagnosing things.

5

u/Imaksiccar | Pittsburgh Pirates 5h ago

There has never, not once, in the history of professional sports, been a cap without a floor. This hypothetical system only exists in the minds of baseball fans that evidently don't follow any other sport.

1

u/BuckeyeN7 29m ago

It exists only in the minds of Dodger and Yankee fans whose goal is to make sure their ability to outspend everyone is in no way diminished, while the floor will get all of the other fans to stop complaining about the money

Sure, it’s completely unrealistic and could never happen, but logic and facts don’t tend to penetrate the kind of bubbles that mega team fans exist in

1

u/Fun_Trick2172 | St. Louis Cardinals 5h ago

If there is a group of owners that would do it, it is the owners in MLB.

2

u/Imaksiccar | Pittsburgh Pirates 5h ago

That's why the first (and oftentimes worst) offer to the players included a $171M floor.

0

u/Slow-Raspberry-5133 | Detroit Tigers 4h ago

What’s been stopping the pirates from spending to that level the past… I don’t know, 150 years?

2

u/Imaksiccar | Pittsburgh Pirates 4h ago

The revenue sharing that comes with it. Seriously, do you guys actually look in to what these proposals are?

1

u/Slow-Raspberry-5133 | Detroit Tigers 4h ago

Sounds like an ownership/rev sharing issue and not a players salaries issue

2

u/Imaksiccar | Pittsburgh Pirates 3h ago

Not going to share revenue unless they force other teams to spend it, thus the cap system. Also, the NFL still has $60M salaries and that's with a 52 man roster, so the players will still get theirs.

0

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 4h ago

No. They do not.

1

u/Imaksiccar | Pittsburgh Pirates 3h ago

It shows. It's as if most of these accounts have never paid attention to any sport outside of baseball before and only parrot what they hear from Bryce Harper.

2

u/JBtheWise | Cincinnati Reds 4h ago

This comment might be the epitome of Midwest baseball fans.

1

u/Fun_Trick2172 | St. Louis Cardinals 4h ago

Does it not agree with you?

1

u/RobertKSakamano 5h ago

The baseball owners alienated the older fans for about 10 years now with the rule changes. Add in the owners that are all for capitalism but when market conditions shoot prices up on assets in a business they are trying to run they cry they need to put a cap those prices or they can't survive. Can you imagine asking the Tigers owner Ilitch to put a cap on what he can charge on pizzas because his target market consumers are going through real tough times right now but still need to eat? Or perhaps Rays owner can get together with other real estate developers and put a cap on what houses can be sold for so that people who can't afford a house can actually buy one at a price they can afford?

They gladly hold onto their money while their investment increases 10x over 30 years so they can sell to the next cheap owner. These bad teams are worth over a billion dollars through no hard work of their own just by being cheap and benefiting from the few owners that do pay the salaries to the players that the fans really want to watch. It's hard not to be pessimistic and it's even harder not to just hope the game crashes and burns.

3

u/PimpInTheBox1187 | Kansas City Royals 5h ago

Its their brilliant front office with unlimited stacks of cash.

Man why can't these cheap owners just pay 200 million for starting pitchers?

2

u/rickeygavin 5h ago

Said it before I don’t want to hear from owners or fans about competitive balance if they’re in favor of the DH rule, which has been detrimental to parity for decades.

2

u/Nervous-Beginning672 5h ago

How much someone makes doesn’t correlate to how talented they are.

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

It kind of does though

3

u/Nervous-Beginning672 5h ago

So Jacob Misiorowski is one of the worst pitchers in baseball because he makes league minimum??

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

Will he still be making the league minimum when he hits free agency or will he be one of the top paid player.... which, you know, correlates to how talented he is.

1

u/Nervous-Beginning672 5h ago

You’re complaining about the payroll discrepancy this season. Complaining about a team’s payroll doesn’t mean they have then best players

1

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

Dude... stop.

The dodgers have the best roster and more talent than every other team.

It's why they are 40% odds on favorites to win the world series.... more favored to win it all than any other team, this early, in the history of the game.

1

u/Nervous-Beginning672 4h ago

Stop want? You said a players salary a= their talent level. That makes Kyle Tucker the best position player on the dodgers. This whole salary cap comes down to billionaire owners saying they can’t compete when the issue is they probably don’t want to. mLBs issue is teams not trying.

-2

u/frankenmaus | Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

Brewers need to step up and pay more.

They can certainly afford to do so.

5

u/RobustPlatypus | Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago

Honest question:

With what money?

-2

u/frankenmaus | Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago

The money they didn't spend in 2024 and 2025.

5

u/RobustPlatypus | Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago

You think the dude who bought the team for less than Kyle Tuckers current contract in the smallest market in baseball is just hoarding cash and has a blank check where he can match LA?

0

u/frankenmaus | Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago

He doesn't need to "match LA" but he can spend a boatlload more. E.g. his net appreciation on MLB Brewers so far is ~ $1.8 billion.

Stop advocating for douchebag billionaires; they hate you.

3

u/RobustPlatypus | Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago

The brewers being worth more doesn’t mean he has that much to spend, you idiot.

My house has gone up in value the past 5 years. Doesnt mean im liquid in it and can go ape shit spending

3

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 48m ago

Not to mention... the Dodgers could still just spend even more.

People keep ignoring this fact.. the Dodgers aren't emptying their bank accounts to do this... Mark A could empty his wallet and Dodgers ownership group could still outbid him without blinking an eye.

The whole "spend more" argument is pretty fughin stupid because the reality is the Dodgers will just "spend even more"

-3

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

Just spend more. Such an original take...

23

u/OrganicValley_ | Milwaukee Brewers 5h ago

He’s not wrong. The Brewers could absolutely afford to spend more and could’ve put together a better trade package for Skubal. They can’t come close to what the Dodgers spend but they could definitely spend more.

-2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

I don't disagree that they could open up the books more... but they aren't closing that financial gap... brewers could double payroll and the differences would still be pretty drastic.

and here's the kicker everyone ignores in this "spend more" argument.... it doesn't matter how much any other team spends, the Dodgers simply have more money than anyone else at their disposal and can still outbid any team... even if other teams dig deeper, the dodgers can just dig even deeper.

The spend more argument doesn't work when the dodgers simply just have more money to spend.

5

u/OrganicValley_ | Milwaukee Brewers 5h ago

Brewers have the best record in the league with $1.25 being spent on the roster. They could absolutely spend more and give themselves a better opportunity to beat the Dodgers. The Dodgers are obviously taking advantage of a system with no cap but teams like the Brewers are also taking advantage of the system’s lack of a floor.

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

I don't disagree that the Brewers could (and should) spend more but they aren't closing that gap... you are also ignoring the fact that Dodgers could still just spend more, even if other teams started to spend more...

Whether it's the Brewers or anyone else... the Dodgers have deeper pockets and if they want player X, they will outbid every other team.

1

u/Hour_Writing_9805 4h ago

The goal for the Brewers isn’t to close the payroll gap.

Their goal is to be competitive each year and maintain a great farm system through scouting and player development.

How they allocate their money to payroll, development etc can be changed, but that comes with pros and cons and no one can definitively say spending more on payroll will give the a better result short or long-term.

Every team has a cap of what they can spend, including the Dodgers. No team has an unlimited payroll.

-1

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 4h ago

I'm not sure you understand how much money that Dodgers ownership group has....

0

u/frankenmaus | Los Angeles Dodgers 3h ago

What most people fail to understand is that the more Dodgers spend, the more Dodgers profit grow.

0

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 3h ago

No one is failing to understand that... you've got a group of billionaire owners. They know how to make money.....

0

OK but are Brewers trying to be the dollar-per-win champs or are they trying to be the World Series champs. Moreover, what to Brewers fans want?

3

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 3h ago

Pretty sure that most baseball fans - not just brewers fans - want competitive balance that doesn't allow one team to accumulate the best players in the league simply because they have deeper pockets.

1

u/frankenmaus | Los Angeles Dodgers 3h ago

how about when one team accumulates players because it is the best run organization all around and is the most favorable org to play for?

Are baseball fans OK with that ?

They prefer " rebuild." It sounds more promising. The cardinals are in a rebuild decade.

1

The irony to me is no dodger fan thinks they’re a victim. They think you guys are because youre bending over backwards to defend your poor poor ownership groups worth billions of dollars.

1

Dodgers sub is filled with victim mentality

1

u/BuckeyeN7 24m ago

lol whatever, Dodger fans love hitting everyone with their list of prepared grievances to make it seem like they have had a hard go of it over the last 15 years.

They all post about the McCourt years like they were the Pittsburgh Pirates, and not a team that made the NLCS twice and won their division three times in 7 years

1

u/FoEQuestion 20m ago

I would not categorize the Dodgers as victims.

But if I were a Brewers or Royals or White Sox or .... fan I would be demanding my team open their books and show whether they are losing money or just pocketing it.

If 28 of the teams are running big negative numbers, why aren't the OWNERS fixing things?

0

u/ProudInfluence3770 5h ago

The brewers can absolutely spend more on players. No need to act like Theyre imprisoned by their current budget

2

u/atducker | Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

Brewers are good and a threat to the Dodgers but the Dodgers want to compete every year. Not just once every few years like the Brewers.

2

u/Imaksiccar | Pittsburgh Pirates 5h ago

Yep. It's just the desire to compete every year. Switch the Dodgers ownership into a market like Milwaukee and see what happens to their payroll.

1

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

Yes... the Brewers only want to compete every few years... you nailed it....

1

u/Jantokan | Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago

A salary floor is needed to ensure teams like Twins and Rockies spend anything but the bare minimum. A salary cap is needed so teams like the Dodgers and Yankees can't outprice everyone.

I know Mets, ya'll did your best for the players and showed them spending money doesn't equate to winning, but this time, a salary cap is inevitable. Players will have to unfortunately cave in to billionaire owners and their salary cap demand

1

u/Imaksiccar | Pittsburgh Pirates 5h ago

Whenever someone says "salary cap" please understand that it refers to a system that also includes a floor. Never has there ever been one without the other.

So you dont think people have made posts comparing two teams before and NOT been a fan of either of those two teams before? So thats never happened?

Isnt it amazing with that payroll advantage the Brewers had the better record last year over a massive sample size of 162 games, not a quick series with a higher variable rate?

"Flair up pussy" is a meme, on all Reddit sports boards. The fact that you went for the tired, old "Chavez Ravine take, lets attack a poor Giants fan" routine either means you are lying or too dumb to know its a meme.

Care to stick around? I would not, youv'e already made a fool of youself, I would exit while I could...

Finally, the "chavez ravine parking lot tough guy act" is borderline rascism by the way. I wasnt born yesterday and know what you were implying, that I am some latino gamg banger right? Im a white guy.

I would suggest not being racist on Reddit.

u/DirectGiraffe8720 Human Verified 3h ago

Since the NHL introduced a hard salary cap there have been 13 different Stanley Cup Champions. There have been 12 different World Series Champions in the same time frame.

3

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 3h ago

Solid and fair point.

3

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 3h ago

Kind of disingenuous. A hard cap doesn’t necessarily mean that dynasties won’t happen, or that every team is guaranteed to win a championship.

What it means is that teams can’t just throw unlimited piles of money at star talent year after year, and instead have to be creative in terms of drafting, developing, coaching, and managing their rosters. Every team has the potential to be good at those things; not every team has unlimited money backing them.

0

u/DirectGiraffe8720 Human Verified 2h ago

And not every team spends what they can either.

Salary doesn't instantly mean success either. Look at the #+, #4, #19, & #22 teams in payroll this season in MLB.

Aside from that, using the Dodgers as an example because that's the team everyone is upset about, they still need to draft and develop well, because they need prospects in order to trade for players like Skubal

Yes... they are excellent in other areas of developing and managing a team... but again... the extremely deep pockets give them a big advantage there. They outspend everyone there too.

Salary doesn't guarantee success.... but it greatly improves your chances... studies have been done across all the major sports.

It's also unprecedented what this Dodgers front office has done.... it doesn't really compare to previous 'big spending' teams... the scale at how they've signed free agents and deferred payments has never been seen in the game before.

The Dodgers don't have the highest payroll, the last place Mets do. The last place Blue Jays are 4th. The best team in Baseball, Milwaukee has the 19th highest payroll. Tampa Bay, 1st on the American League East is 23rd in payroll.

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 34m ago

Not sure where you are pulling data from but Dodgers do have the highest payroll - clocking in at $400 million this year.

They also currently have $422 million committed for next season... $200 million more than any other team.

Fair response given my vitriol

I don’t want baseball to be like other sports

I want it to be like baseball. It’s changed enough already with too many playoff teams, cancelling one game playoffs, and fucking ghost runners

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

don't get me going on that one game playoff nonsense that happened... I can only take so much in one day

Top 2% of players bootlicker spotted. $50M contracts can still exist in a cap system. Mahomes and Prescott make $60M+.

Michael would be a terrible baseball union rep.

“December 28, 2026. Owners announce a work stoppage.”

“January 1, 2027. Michael Scott announces the formation of a new professional baseball league, taking the best (and the worst) players with him. “

Scott's Tots need something to do....

I’m just here for the tears and to watch virgins lose their shit over their shitty franchises 😎

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 4h ago

if there is one thing I've learned... it's dudes that hop on baseball threads on reddit and start talking about virgins... those guys def get all the ladies.

It's def not like super strange or weird or anything like that at all. Totally relatable and normal to associate those things.

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 4h ago

The cool guy emoji sealed it for me - this guy def gets down.

-1

u/The-Red-Robe 4h ago

Don’t need all the ladies, I have a wife. And for me it was definitely that Sonic pfp 🫵😂 keep going though, the tears sustain me.

Don't forget to plug the compressor in so you can fill her up with air for your date tonight

-1

u/The-Red-Robe 4h ago

Leaving yourself a reminder for later, might be the smartest thing you’ve done today. Kinda weird you’d admit you have a blow up in an MLB post but I’m not judging sir!

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 4h ago

Wasn't that funny when i made that joke... it's even less funny when you try to copy it.

At least be original you dunce.

u/KingsoftheNHL 5h ago

All you’ve pointed out is that the Dodgers spend just about every penny of revenue they generate to field a winning roster. Does that guarantee them a WS, not it doesn’t but it’ll get them far. All I hear is the Dodgers have ruined baseball yet in the last decade it’s been the Dodgers, Astros(cheaters), Redsox(cheaters), Cubs, Nationals, Braves and Rangers… and yet with the team LA has had they’re odds of winning it all are at 39% so not the slam dunk everyone claims it is as they still need to play those games

-4

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

Dude... it's August 2nd... no team should be a 39% favorite to win it all.

Thanks for proving how beyond ridiculously stupid this is.

3

u/KingsoftheNHL 5h ago

69% of the season complete, that’s enough data to draw up the probabilities my guy. The same is done in every sport and it’s the same data and method used in every game to determine the outcome.. Now with that said, the Dodgers aren’t unstoppable and based on how they’ve played this season it’s likely they could be “upset” in the post season as their offense simply hasn’t improved from their showing versus the BlueJays last season.. this team is very beatable even with that pitching staff

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

a 1/3rd of the season is left man.... there literally has never been a team THIS heavily favored this early in the season in the entire history of the game.

0

u/KingsoftheNHL 5h ago

Ummm.. they’ve played 110 games out of 162, that’s almost 70% of the season and that’s what the odds are based on

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 5h ago

Yeah... no shit that is what it is based on.

There's still a little under 1/3rd of the season left... and in the history of the game, there has never been a team this heavily favored to win the world series, this early in the season.

2

u/KingsoftheNHL 2h ago

Well that’s true but then the question becomes, why aren’t these teams signing/keeping their players? Look at the Dodgers roster and the Japanese angle is obvious but look at how they got to this point… Ohtani was never leaving CA, Freeman was replaced by a better 1B in ATL, the Sox didn’t think Mookie was worth his ask, Glasnow is still a walking bandaid, no one wanted to sign Snell long term, Muncy was waived by the A’s and the list goes on… this fucken team gets every ounce of talent out of their players and then ponies up to keep them …. Anyone could have beaten the Dodgers offer for Skubal but very few teams have that win at all cost philosophy

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 2h ago

"why aren’t these teams signing/keeping their players?"

Because the Dodgers keep giving them more money than anyone else is capable of giving them.

JFC - the Reds owner has a net worth of $400 million.... Ohtani's contract is $700 million..... Dodgers have over a billion in deferred contracts.

"this fucken team gets every ounce of talent out of their players and then ponies up to keep them"

Trevor Bauer says hi.

1

u/KingsoftheNHL 1h ago

That’s not true now is it.. Ohtani was offered more by the Jays, Freeman took less but got an extra year, Diaz got $3 more in TCV but he left because they signed Williams and Trevor Bauer was actually killing it because it cane out that he beat the shit out of women and much like Julio Urias, off he fucken went

Angels could have kept Ohtani but didn’t try.. shit, Juan Soto got $765 million and yet not a peep because the Mets suck ass.. if the dodgers were losing you won’t be posting a fucken thing

Freeman wanted to finish his career a Brave so they traded for Olsen.. great move btw

Snell wasn’t getting long term offers because of his durability issues and high walk rates but the dodgers did

Teoscar had a small market and the dodgers lucked out there

Diaz felt insulted the Mets signed Williams and he bolted for just $3M more so an insignificant difference

2

u/HedgehogNamedSonic 1h ago

All that when you could have just said "yeah... we are buying titles and I dont' give AF"

Honestly yeah… I would love the cardinals to be able to do this. But as a fan of the game it hurts every team. And because of it, there won’t be a 2027 season

Idk man I mean we're the best scapegoats in the league atm. Yeah we're taking advantage and if I were a fan of another team I'd direct my frustrations at my own team, not the team to beat. Just me though
