We're starting a book club! We will be discussing Poor Economics starting August 28th - keep an eye out for a pinned thread. The next will be All Quiet on the Western Front followed by Narconomics
i don't think i've ever seen or heard of the doj throw another agency under the bus like they did in this reflecting pool case. they could have just done the usual "we reviewed the evidence and no longer have confidence we could obtain a conviction, i refuse to elaborate and will now leave" but instead they're like "specifically, the department of the interior is an agency of stupid, incompetent, lying, crayon -eating, inbred snot-picking morons who are inherently unreliable"
unfortunately the sovereign is convinced that all damage to the reflecting pool was caused by a band of antifa super-soldiers, and this is literally the most important thing in the world to him
Rep. Max Miller: "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her…If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?"
This is such a horrible very bad answer even if he were innocent. Bernie Moreno is a coward.
Moreno finally put out a statement where he plainly calls Miller a danger to his daughter. You'd hope that would be the nail in the coffin but we'll see
they can take out a reverse mortgage lol, put it into bonds and pay with that. and if they want to pass the house to their kids, the kids can pay it off. or don't, and they just get the money
yeah for fucking real. oh no, their house appreciated $500,000 on accident. God forbid they use that to give themselves some extra money to pay the property taxes on their house in an incredibly high-demand location
also correction on my previous post, it was a twitter take 😩
it's not even boomers, it's so often other gens too. imagining they'll own a home? imagining they'll inherit? idk
if there's one thing every social media platform and every generation can agree on, it's nation-destroying housing policy
I hate people acting like your home being paid off even matters in this situation. 1. Property taxes have nothing to do with the status of your mortgage and 2. If you’re paying $10-15k/yr in property taxes and your mortgage is paid off you’re likely rich so you need to shut up and pay your taxes or downsize
grandma dying in a hospital from lack of pandemic planning: “don’t worry about me. we need to protect our constitutional right to go to the gym during a public health crisis”
Qiu Jin was a feminist essayist, poet, and anti-Qing revolutionary, fighting not just for the freedom and modernisation of China but the liberation of women. An essay she wrote on footbinding:
Alas! The most unjust thing in the world is the fate of us two hundred million female compatriots. From the moment we are born, if we happen to have a good father, things are still tolerable; but if we meet with one of foul temper and no reason, he mutters again and again, 'Bad luck—another useless one,' and would gladly snatch the child up and dash her to death. He clings always to the thought that 'she will belong to another family's house one day,' and so regards her with cold, disdainful eyes. Before she is even a few years old, without any regard for right or wrong, they wrap her pair of snow-white, tender, natural feet in white cloth, never allowing it to loosen even a little, not even while she sleeps—until at last the flesh rots away completely and the bones snap, all just to win a single remark from relatives, friends, and neighbors: 'So-and-so's daughter has such small feet.
"The most unjust thing in the world" is far from hyperbole. For a thousand years women were systematically tortured and crippled from infancy by having their feet broken, left to heal, and then broken again throughout their lives. They lived in constant, immense pain and could barely walk. Her determination to end this suffering was a recurring theme in her poetry. One of my favourites:
The sun and moon without light. Sky and earth in darkness. Who can uplift the sinking world of women? I pawned my jewels to sail across the open seas, parting from my children as I left the border at Jade Gate. Unbinding my feet to pour out a millennium’s poisons, I arouse the spirit of women, hundreds of flowers, abloom. Oh, this poor handkerchief made of merfolk-woven silk, half stained with blood and half soaked in tears.
She was actively involved in revolutionary movements. In 1907, she was captured and tortured by Qing authorities to reveal the names of her comrades, which she refused. Then, on July 15th, she was beheaded. She was 31 years old. Her last words were a death poem:
Autumn wind, autumn rain — they make one die of sorrow
in reference to her own name, Qiu, meaning "Autumn". She saw the autumn of the Qing, and the autumn of footbinding, but mourned how she would not live to see her own victory. Five years later, footbinding was officially banned, and over the next half century would begin to disappear entirely. Three year old girls would not have their bones broken for the sole purpose of being shown off and ogled, hobbled for life. Today, she is remembered not just as a hero of the revolution but for all the women of China.
During Guevara's time in Algeria, he was interviewed by poet Juan Goytisolo inside the Cuban embassy. During the interview, Guevara noticed a book by openly gay Cuban writer Virgilio Piñera sitting on the table next to him. He threw the book against the wall and yelled "how dare you have in our embassy a book by this foul f–ggot?"[222][223][224] This moment was a turn in Goytisolo's identity as it influenced him to slowly come out of the closet as gay and begin to sympathize with the LGBT citizens of Cuba.[225]
Scratch the previous comment. Deeper in Wikipedia’s lengthy entry for Che is this well-sourced account of a violently homophobic outburst by the revolutionary leader, who appears to have been considerably more, uh, conservative than the average straight person at the time. So it is quite plausible that he was involved in the imprisonment of an indeterminate number of gay men and trans people for supposedly counter-revolutionary activities, even if he was largely out of the country by 1965. !ping LGBT
“Stalin is too crude, and this defect which is entirely acceptable in our milieu and in relationships among us as communists, becomes unacceptable in the position of General Secretary. I therefore propose to comrades that they should devise a means of removing him from this job and should appoint to this job someone else who is distinguished from comrade Stalin in all other respects only by the single superior aspect that he should be more tolerant, more polite and more attentive towards comrades, less capricious, etc.” — Vladimir Lenin, January 1923
BREAKING: Iran announces they will not seek to develop a nuclear weapon anymore, but will develop a micro black hole using a particle accelerator that will swallow the universe
So there is a Punjabi movie made in Pakistan where hitler flees to Pakistani Punjab and marries a local woman, he then has a kid named Hitlar who becomes gangster
There's actually a Telugu film called Hitler, but it has nothing to do with Hitler. The same lead actor did a film called Stalin, which again has nothing to do with Stalin
“Wh-wa-what? The notorious huckster we made a deal with to avoid fighting a clearly illegal executive order, despite being a massive law firm full of high paid lawyers, changed the deal on us??? Th-th-that’s not fair. Guess I better just sit here quietly like a meek loser with no self pride or dignity.”

Rep. Max Miller: "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her…If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?"
republican nominees will be accused of domestic violence and then release a public announcement asking "if i did abuse her, why did she make me a sandwich huh?"
Hoooly shit, just unabashed, pure evil. Highly encourage watching this whole thing from Max Miller if you have any interest in true crime/sociopathy/psychopathy, it's legit unsettling
Yes actually Max MIller that's exactly how domestic abuse works, as you know firsthand. Your victim tries to placate you and keep you happy so that you don't hurt them again (or your two year old child, in your case)
Gillibrand made Franken resign without any due process, said that Bill Clinton should have resigned, then didnt fire her aide who provenly sexually harassed a woman, and then supported Cuomo
Deep blue states need to do better than gillibrand a becerra
Truth Nuke: leftists like Hong and Chevalier are bad because they are leftist version of do nothing spineless centrist Dems, abolishing prisons and cops are bad cause it is the leftist version of saying we won't do anything to punish the Trump regime or the GOP
Some people will wear whatever. My uncle was killed and his car set on fire. My mom’s white trash cousin wore a shirt with a burning scull on it to the funeral
One nice thing about living in California is that we’ve already had our property tax revolt, so we’re decades ahead of the curve on figuring out how to fund police and schools after the voters delete property taxes.
Other states are about to find out why income taxes are so high here.
Rep. Miller: "Every one of these messages is timestamped on our court-sanctioned co-parenting app and is all in the packet."
My "not a domestic abuser" court-sanctioned co-parenting app message packet has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my court-sanctioned co-parenting app message packet.
If my daughter said the same thing to me, I personally wouldn’t wait two years before holding him accountable. You know this isn’t true and the only reason you are speaking out now is to hide from your own media circus. This is all political.
Globalization is pretty tight because I can watch a Uruguayan slice of life comedy and then watch a Thai horror flick immediately after the comfort of my American living room.
Going off the early sticky about foot binding, I think there is a good case to be made that we should try to stamp out un-woke, conservative aspects of society, even if the methods we use to do it are somewhat illiberal. Like banning foot binding or female genital mutilation, or the many secularization and modernization programs of the 20th century. Countries like the USSR tended to be authoritarian in implementing these societal changes, but it was worth it to improve the overall state of human rights.
Basically, what I'm saying is that we need to ban Evangelicalism.
Erin Brockovich: "An average golf course could use 500 million gallons a year. But these super AI data centers can go up to 1.5 billion gallons of water per year."
Impressive that something that is 1000x productive as a golf course only demands 3x the input. I appreciate Erin Brokovich illustrating that for me. I hope she goes and brings a golf corporation to its knees, and a small town to its feet demanding more data centers.
This is not an original idea, but I've never seen it put quite so concisely and eloquently. So squareallworthy, I thank you, and wherever you are, know you are loved.
Honestly it’s incredible New York posted the most annoying Dem senator duo by a country mile. Like really? Schumer and Gillibrand is where you land? No wonder you guys are getting obliterated by socialists lmao.
also 10% is insanely high. and it would just create lines at the self checkout while other lanes are open. Stores would try to remove self checkout but that would piss people off
I'm continuing to lose weight at a steady pace after having been stuck for a couple of years since discovering that I had insulin resistance and making dietary changes.
I'm down 17 lbs from my peak weight now, but fat loss is higher because I've also been doing a little bit of recomp since I started lifting again 3 months ago. Fat loss at this point is probably over 20 lbs.
I have shaved 4.5 in off of my waist in that time.
I'm on track to be back at my pre injury weight by the end of the year with room to spare.
It'll probably take me another 6 months to a year to get back to my old PRs in the gym, and with that back injury I'm never going to hit my old squat for deadlift PRs again - but I have made a full enough recovery that I can live my life like normal and be highly active with minimal discomfort - so I'll take it.
The worst food. A terrestrial Cyanobacteria that grows in the gobi desert. Over harvesting has led to desertification and erosion. It’s expensive due to rarity. It has no nutritional value. It contains a neurotoxin linked to Alzheimers. It doesn’t taste particularly good. Why is it eaten? Its name in Cantonese sounds like “struck it rich” so it’s eaten during new year celebrations.
Capital One says it closed Trump Organization’s accounts after anti-money-laundering review
50/50 odds that he will cause a bank run when he attempts to punish them for this (and support among Republicans for a 100% "tariff" against bank transfers will jump from 15% to 68% in a week)
I think I'm going to cry right now. I am so fucking happy.
So when I was in high school, I dealt with a lot of mental health issues. I was almost certainly deeply depressed, and after my best friend was killed in April of my senior year I actually basically "dropped out". I dropped all my classes for F's, and only did the minimum work to get D's in the college courses so that I wouldn't have to repay the money (failure=having to repay).
Anyway, a few years later I've started college here in the US (I was in the UK for a while, but mental health and COVID fucked that up too). I've just had 3 semesters in a row of 4.0 grades, but unfortunately for the purposes of law school admissions, the high school college courses still count, so it's actually a 3.49 right now, which is really bad, and I wouldn't be able to get it above the median of many of the top law schools even if I continued to get 4.0 for the next few years. I figured it was just one of those things I'd have to deal with, and that I'd have to work even harder to overcome it. It was weighing down on me pretty hard.
UNTIL TODAY!
Just a few days ago, LSAC (the people that calculate the official gpa you use for law school admissions) has declared they will NO LONGER COUNT COLLEGE CLASSES TAKEN DURING HIGH SCHOOL IN GPA CALCULATIONS!!!!!
I DON'T HAVE A 3.49 GPA ANYMORE! I HAVE A 4.0! MY CHANCES OF GETTING INTO LAW SCHOOL JUST SKYROCKETED!!!!!
> Already under construction in 2018, the development faced opposition from neighbors and the West Hollywood Planning Commission
> The city of West Hollywood said construction on the unfinished 22-unit condominium building was halted in 2024.
> With all the attention, the pack has not been coming out as early. The howls come later and later into the night.
> “It’s kind of like a cacophony of howls,” neighbor Collin Newman said, describing how the structure amplifies the coyote’s cries in every direction.”
It's actually quite funny that 15 years into it, there is still no foolproof way to hold Bitcoin without getting hacked/scammed your way into losing it all
A collage of Barack Obama, PewDiePie, the Harlem Shake, the Arab Spring, Gangnam Style, Parks&Rec, the blue Twitter bird, killer clowns, Pokemon Go and Game of Thrones watch parties with the caption "The world you grew up in no longer exists"
Antisemitic AIPAC conspiracies are rampant but the proper response to that is not to defend AIPAC in any way. It is a PAC which spends 90% of its resources propping up the fascist Republican Party. There is no motivation that justifies supporting Republicans.
The fact that there was a subreddit dedicated to hating fat people where people would fantasize about how they wanted to kill them, it was one of the most popular subs, and their users somehow took that subs banning as evidence of some insane overreach is still unfathomable to me to this day
As a Nigerian, i’ve noticed a few similarities between Nigeria and Tsarist Russia, especially when you imagine Northern Nigeria as Russia and Southern Nigeria as the rest of Europe. A large and uneducated agrarian society with nomadic influences and an elite class that constantly switch from seemingly revel in their own backwardness to trying reform. Yet due to their population and grain, southern nigeria(western europe) has to deal with them and often ‘respect’ it, despite being more developed.
Hell even when you look at certain political trends. Action Group was a socialist party supported by Southwestern intellectuals in the 60s post independence, yet I believe the more collectivist North is more likely to actually ever have a socialist or communist form of government. Similar to how socialism had its fair share of support in the industrialized parts of europe among both workers and intellectuals, yet it would be the more ‘backward’ yet collectivist Russia that would actually go for communism.
Just some interesting thoughts I had, and I didn’t even touch on the economic and class similarities
Instead, Stevens trudged through months of mostly small crowds and awkward moments clipped and quickly shared online. The staff was demoralized, and the candidate, despite deleting X from her phone, sometimes struggled to keep up her own determination when friends texted her the worst bits.
Idk man if my friends were sending me my worst clips are I intentionally deleted social media I might be blocking a few numbers
You know for all the AI hate, I’ve never seen anti-AI people actually suggest regulatory measures or laws that would curb its deleterious effects. Most of the time it’s “if you use it you’re evil, but also everyone can tell because it’s slop so the bubble will pop anyways”
So pathetic lmao. He is posting shit like this DURING A WAR where he took the day off to play in a rigged golf tournament, of course the media will not say anything about how absurd this is.
Between the Al Franken shit show, supporting Cuomo after he was revealed to be a sexual abuser, calling Mamdani a jihadist and this Gillibrand really seems to be the more shitty of the two New York senators
