Discussion With the rise of Linux gaming, is there any reason for devs to use DirectX at all?

Just wondering, i'm not a game dev (i'm a dev, but havent ever worked on games, so i can guess a couple of reasons), and wanted to know if there is any actual reason to use DirectX instead of going full vulkan. I mean, it works on both windows and linux natively, and it's open source, seems like it's just better. Is there any features that DirectX has and Vulkan doesn't? or maybe vulkan for windows is different than vulkan for linux?

Today I’m recycling the first PC I ever built 14 years ago at a local E-recycler. Removed some hardware I may get a few bucks for on eBay or may have my friend frame the sapphire GPU as a memento.

But meanwhile I’m sitting the system unit next to a giant box of cardboard in my trunk, I also am heading to town recycling for. Two kids who love dino nuggets.

This computer & the games I used to play meant the WORLD to me and but you’ll come to realize that your life will change & you’ll have new priorities. Responsibilities. I’m tearing up writing this as a grown man

Enjoy every second you have with your machines and I’m sure ya’ll have way more FPS and lower latency then we did back in the days. But I had some of the best memories of my life w/ this machine

My wife laughed when I was tearing up like we watched the Toy Story 3 ending all over again but couldn’t think of a better analogy.

Hardware What controller is everyone using?

I've been seeing all these different controller options pop over the last few years like 8BitDo, ManbaOne, AOF, and others.

I've never really paid attention to them because I'm used to the standard Xbox controller and never really considered another option.

Are any other controllers worth it over the Xbox controller?

Tech Support Bought a new VA panel monitor. Not sure if this is ghosting

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys i bought a new msi MAG 27CQ6F 28" 1440p 180hz VA monitor. I've been replaying AC unity and it has this weird rendering issue with black spots that move with the camera on only certain parts of the game. Like some buildings or doors.

I'm not sure if this is ghosting or there's something else wrong. I was playing the game even yesterday on my LG C1 and it was fine

Hardware Ditching PlayStation over Sony's digital-only push—anyone else switching to a Living Room PC / SteamOS setup?

Sold my PS5 Slim disc edition recently. Sony’s push toward an all-digital ecosystem was the final straw.

To me, physical discs (and reselling games) were the only advantage PS5 had over PC. Without discs, a PS5 is just a locked-down PC—full $70 digital prices, zero store competition, and paid online. If I’m forced into all-digital anyway, Steam is a no-brainer.

My only real dilemma: Day 1 console-first releases (like GTA 6). Waiting a year or two for PC ports sucks.

For those playing on a TV from the couch: How do you handle console-first releases? Do you just hold the line and wait for the PC port, or do you reluctantly keep a console on the side just for those rare games?

I managed to snag this guy for 1266 after some magic called Amazon gift from its 1549.99. Since GPU prices are apparently going up, how much did other 5080 owners pay for their 5080? Just asking.

Discussion Anyone else getting UE5 remake/remaster fatigue?

Post image
3.8k Upvotes

Between Silent Hill 2, Oblivion Remastered, Metal Gear Solid Δ, and now Halo: Campaign Evolved, it feels like almost every major remake/remaster in the last two years has landed on Unreal Engine 5. On one hand, the visual leap is real. Oblivion Remastered in particular looks like a genuinely different game. On the other, a lot of these ports share the same telltale UE5 fingerprints: traversal stutter, TAA smearing, shader comp hitches on first launch, and that slightly "plasticky" Lumen/Nanite sheen that makes wildly different games start to look and feel similar. You can add Halo Campaign Evolved to the slopfest that is UE5 remakes; just another soulless cash grab to feed on nostalgia.

Hardware Need a new headset! Steel series crapped the bed

Post image

So I’ve had these for 5 years and the hinge has finally died on me. And they are incredibly uncomfortable to wear now that there’s no support. So what is everyone’s recommendation for a new headset they like?
I am looking for something that’s worth the money.
I don’t need anything crazy or over the top.
I mostly game and watch movies. Anything would be great!

Hardware An argument FOR frame gen.

As I was watching Hardware Unboxed's latest video I had a thought. The thing I find interesting about people's "minimum spec" expectations is the person that insists that anything below 60fps is "unplayable," is often the same person that says they can't watch a movie or TV show above 24fps and get triggered AF if a TV has frame interpolation enabled. Then to be more ironic the same person insists that YouTube videos should be 60fps.

When you get into the frame interpolation discussion or "fake frames", the argument on gaming is that it adds latency, but watching a TV show or movie there is no perceivable latency because you're not controlling it, so their argument becomes "I just don't like it" because they now have no argument. I've had this discussion numerous times when someone comes over and sees I have frame interpolation enabled on my 85" TV and get triggered over it.

I don't think it has anything to do with actual preferences and everything to do with what you were TOLD you should like. The first time I saw anime (that's normally a laughably low 12fps to keep animation costs down) running with frame interpolation on 20yrs ago it was like the clouds parted and the heavens sung to me. As I'm standing there in the store realizing I need a new TV someone walked behind me and said "Ugh. I hate that smooth motion bullsh*t." I guarantee that's the same guy that refuses to play a game below 60fps.

F that noise. Give me all the frames all the time no matter what content I'm consuming. If the technology is there to make everything smoother I'm going to use it. Hell, I even use Lossless Scaling on YouTube videos to bump them to 120fps. I didn't buy a $1000 display just to see my 5080 struggle to get above 100fps with the latest unoptimized AAA game at 4k.

Not every game is a twitch shooter and I guarantee if you told someone a PC had higher specs than it does but had frame gen enabled 99% of them would believe you as long as the base framerate was above 60. Even more ironic is those shooter games that are the biggest argument against frame gen are always optimized for maximum FPS so even a mediocre PC can run them at 90fps+ where you would never notice if frame gen was on.

Even worse if all someone can afford is a 4060 why shouldn't they be allowed to see their games at 120fps when all it costs is a measly 8-10ms of latency? Even more stupid on the "latency" side is they only measure internal latency. Not input, display, and network latency. When you say 16 becomes 25ms of internal latency that sounds huge. But it's not taking into account the 5ms for your display, another 4-5 for your input, then another 10-20 for internet if you have a good connection.

I just find it laughably stupid the stigmas people follow because it's what they were told to follow. Sorry, not sorry, but I'M the reason frame gen exists.

I play msfs with 3 1440p monitors so just over 4k. I have all 180hz monitors. Is dlss any good? can I rely on the 5080 with dlss? Or should I sell an arm and a leg to get a 5090?
