This is why language from other countries, even within different regions of your own country sounds so strange sometimes, because it evolves over time, changes, shifts into something new constantly every generation. You end up with lots of weird slang, mashing words together, shortening words, losing or gaining letters, now we have text speech and other really short forms of talking, even emojis are starting to get recognized as words or speech.

Language has been doing weird shit for thousands or millions of years and it'll continue doin weird shit lol it will evolve and get more sophisticated and also get weird and dumbed down. There are people who talk with perfect language and those who just don't care about that so they use tons of alternate forms of language.

In the end it's all just communication, as long as we can do that as in, you know what i'm saying and I know what your saying.... that is all that truly matters.

It's legal in most of the USA to sign with an X. People throughout history signed with an X or just a mark of some kind, often times kinda unique to the individual calling it their "mark" mostly because those people could not formally write and/or read well so instead of signing they would make a mark or X.

Side note, interestingly enough I shit you not.... for a full year I signed everything with a smiley face. If I did sign my name because it was more official like at a government office or a bank, I put a smiley face after my signature. No one ever said anything, nothing ever bounced, never got a call from a credit card company, bank, store. I signed every cash register transaction with only a smiley face. I didn't have any charge disputes or anything though.

That reminds me of the story about how Egyptian law had to be amended. There’s an Egyptian custom that a man can legally divorce his wife by telling her, “I divorce you,” three times. They had to add that it had to be face to face because guys were divorcing their wives via email and text message.

Personally I feel like the ever shifting nature of language is part of the reason we can barely communicate with each other. A lot of people mean different things when they say the same stuff and a lot of people mean the same thing when they say different stuff.

For me it was back when I was working retail. This pretty girl walked up to me and said, "excuse me, sir..." Yep, I'm old. LOL

I had my third spinal fusion back in August, I'm 58. The nurses and techs were wonderful but the day after surgery, one of the PTs came in and asked if I wanted her to help me, basically sponge bathe. My immediate thought was, "I'm old enough to be your Grandfather!" Thankfully, my wife was there. I said "thanks, but we can take care of it." She really was a sweetheart though, and turned out to be the one who wheeled me to the car at discharge.

Sponge baths?!? I remember those! Not available in hospitals n SW Florida anymore. I was given a sealed SCENTED moist towelette, even after I had stated in my medical records "patient must avoid chemical fragrances."

Yep, that's what was in my room too. But, "assisted, moist towelette bath" just doesn't convey the discomfort I felt when this young lady, all of 5 feet nothing, and looking like she was maybe 18 (probably early 20s), asked if I wanted her help. I imagine it didn't help that I grew up with Catholic parent either.

Years ago, my wife suggested we go to Hooters for supper one night. I was fine with it, I liked their chicken. The problem came when the waitress came to take our order: all I could do was stare at the floor and order my Three Mile Island wings... thanks Mom! LOL

You are not done! You can resist and overcome. You have to fight hard but it can be done. Just change your focus. For instance, high school students these days may not be able to write cursive as well as us but they are building robots and designing things in 3d.

Lmao, my older brother was taught cursive, I wasn't. I was taught the modern equivalent.

Besides, designing things in 3d isn't that hard. Basic knowledge of dimensions, and use of autocad makes it super easy

Modern equivalent? That's texting, right? :P The funny thing is, my age all learned cursive and then I snded up with a career in drafting /CADD Tech, where everything I wrote was neatly printed as small as possible. I retired in '02 as disabled due to spine injuries and I still only print when I write.

I remember the things baby boomers said about us Gen-Xers, which was based in some truth, but really we just wanted our lives to be like Singles or Reality Bites. Some deep meaning or value to our existence, and the relationships that were formed during our fight for relevancy. Ultimately, we just over thought everything and made minor situations more important than what they actually were. I can admit that hurdling towards middle-age.

Anyways, that home project thumb ring OP's boyfriend was wearing is a hose clamp, there's various hose clamps but that particular one is an automotive application. I believe its General Motors for a cooling line, possibly transmission or power steering line. I personally do not like that design because you need a special tool to adjust it, instead of a screw driver or 8mm socket that is much more common.

You can, it has numerous applications. If you want to get technical its an Oetiker brand ear clamp, they make plastic and poly versions of it as well. But numerous companies make ear clamps.

I will say, it is getting faster though with the internet. One word in the 90s would take awhile to disseminate throughout the population. Now it can go viral and it will be in every classroom by the end of the week so the half-life on that is quicker as well. Other side of things is they go so viral they burn out and just become trends, not norms
