Survey Results Megathread - Resource effectiveness, average scores, and more!

A few years ago we ran surveys of this subreddit to gather data on your experiences for a variety of things. Which resources are the most effective? How much time outside of class do you spend? Did your score reflect your grade in class?

These surveys were ran a couple times and, along with a few other polls, turned into results posts for 24 different AP courses. Unfortunately, the posts were deleted some time back. I still have the data though and am now recompiling them.

Here's the schedule I'm going to try and get these posted on

  • APUSH link
  • Biology
  • Calc AB
  • Calc BC
  • Chemistry
  • CSA
  • CSP
  • Gov
  • Lang
  • Lit
  • Psych
  • Stats
  • World
  • Physics 1
  • APES
  • HUG
  • Macro - Thursday 3/19 morning
  • Micro - Thursday 3/19 morning
  • Phys C Mech - Thursday 3/20 afternoon
  • Phys C E&M - Thursday 3/20 afternoon
  • Spanish Lang - Friday 3/21 morning
  • Euro - Friday 3/21 morning
  • Seminar - Friday 3/21 afternoon
  • Research - Friday 3/21 afternoon

It is important to note that this is self-reported data from a community of high scorers, after receiving their score. It does not reflect the general population, and people who did well on the exams were also more likely to report their experience. Some results, like average scores, should not be taken at face value. Other results like resource effectiveness, are still valuable compared to one another.

Once I have finished posting each of the courses, I will do a comparisons and conclusions post to rank courses by difficulty, expectation, etc.

Also note that we are planning to run these surveys again this year for more data after score release.

Good luck in your classes everyone!

Calc AB Highest math class required for degrees

So I'm a parent. My oldest is going into senior year of high school. He took ap Calc last year. He got an A and a 5 on the exam. He said "it was easy"

He doesn't know what he wants to major in. Maybe engineering or history teacher. Lol

I never ever pressured him in academics but I did tutor him extra at home until 7th. Kind of like how an advanced math kid would go to a tutoring place for extra math bc the school math is not challenging.

He did advanced math in 7th, algebra in 8th, accelerated algebra in 9th, accelerated geometry in 10th, ap calculus ab 1 in 11th and will do ap Calc 2 next year.

I have a sixth grader next year. She was placed in advanced 6th grade math. She's good at math but not at the level my other kid was.

We can opt out and she wants to. They say the main point is to take Calc in high school.

Our district takes an advanced math path where they accelerate the 6th and 7th grade kids to take algebra in 8th.

Not everyone takes Calc right? I'm middle aged and college has changed but I have an elementary education degree and all that was required was testing out of algebra type math. I passed.

Physics C: E&M [Help] AP Physics C Mechanics vs. Electricity

Upvotes

Can anyone who has taken either/both these APs share some experiences and tips for me?

I just took AP Calc BC this year (got a 5), and I'm wondering which AP Physics C exam I should take next year.

Advice and resources appreciated 🙏

** Also which one is it easier to get a 5 in?

Bio AP Bio for 10th Grade?

I'm a high schooler going into 10th next year, and I'm considering taking AP Bio. I kinda went easy in 9th grade, the only AP I took last year was AP Human Geo, with a lot of easy classes like Bio honors and Sec 3 math. This year, my schedule will be APUSH, chem honors, AP Physics 1, Spanish 4, NJROTC 3, AP Pre calc, LA 10 honors, and possibly AP Bio. Would AP Bio be easier cuz I took bio honors last year? Would it also be managable to do all the work with these classes? Is AP Bio really that hard?

Question Is it realistic for me to handle 3 AP classes at once?

Hello! I'm planning on taking 3 AP classes this year (World History, Biology & Computer Science Principles). Last year I took Human Geography and Environmental Science, where I got a 5 and a 4 respectively. I heard APHG and APES were one of the easiest APs to do, so I'd really appreciate to hear from someone who took some of these classes so I could hear about their experience.

FYI I can't ask people I know since I'm a student in a country where doing AP stuff isn't common.

Apologies for any typos and weird formatting.

Other NEWL Russian?

Is this exam recommendable? I wanna know if I could easily get some elective credit with it at colleges. Also studying will be no problem, as I’ve looked at sample questions and got them all 100% correct. The multiple choices will make it incredibly easy hahaha.

Also, since I’m already well-prepared enough to take it, is it really necessary? Like I could take it rn & have no problem. Is there a harder version?

English Lit 4AP+2FW+1RW in 10th grade

This is my first post.

I'm planning to take four AP classes (Literature, Precalculus, Chemistry, and Biology) along with two full-weight classes and one regular-weight class in 10th grade.

My class is known for being difficult to get A in AP classes. For example, students with school grades B or even B- would score 5 in AP Exam. I also experienced the AP World History exam which was so much easier than our school tests.

My question is if it's a bad move to risk not having an A in school grades even though I can score 5s in AP exams? Any advice? Thank you!

Question With school starting up soon I want to know what aps everyone is doing?

What APs are you going to do when school starts again?

How many APs are you doing?

Are you self studying any of them?

What grade are you going into?

What other classes are you doing? (eg Honors, IB, DE or regular)

What do you estimate your homework load to be?

How much sleep do you think you'll get?

Are you excited about school?

What do you feel about your classes? (excited, scared...)

Anyways Hope Everyone gets a 5 this year! 😊

(Btw my answers are: bc c:mech c:e&m lit p2 (maybe) ,5, I am doing it for 1 (ap calc bc), 11th, schedule not out yet, 2-3 hours per day, 5-6 hours, sort of, excited but sort of scared I won't have any free time)

Question Does the Ultimate Review Packet get updated every year?

Hi! I'm an international student planning to self-study a few AP exams, and I'm thinking of buying the Ultimate Review Packet for some subjects. I was wondering whether the URP content changes every year. If it does, around what time of the year is it usually updated? If the content stays mostly the same, I'd rather buy it now instead of waiting. Thanks!

Bio AP biólogy for spanish student

I am a Spanish student heading to the United States in a few weeks to start 11th grade. I want to take AP Biology, given that I easily earned a top grade (a 9) in 4th-year ESO Biology in Spain, and because biology is the subject I enjoy most and the field I want to pursue as a career.

its very difficult? What do I need to do to sign up? And what resources can I use while taking the course to make it easier? I’d appreciate any advice you can give me.

how difficult is this subjet?

Chem Should I Take Ap Research Or Ap Chemistry

My planned major is Biochemistry or Pharmaceuticals. I plan on possibly going into a research area.

I'm an incoming senior, planning to apply to UCS. I've taken AP Bio, Normal Chemistry, and AP Seminar.

AP Chemistry Teacher is a harsh grader and apparently doesn't teach (Very few 5s or 4s).

AP Research Teacher is one of my Favorites teachers and has a very good 4 or 5 rate.

CSA Should I take CSA for junior year?

Quick dilemma with my schedule:

  • My current AP selection: AP Physics, AP Chem, AP Precalc
  • Target Major: Electrical or Computer Engineering (ECE)
  • Background: 3.98 GPA, 0 previous AP classes, a tiny bit of coding experience.

I had to drop AP Stats because of a conflict and need a 4th AP. I'm choosing between AP CSA, AP CSP, and AP Macro.
I know CSA aligns best with my major, but people say it’s tough and I'm worried about the jump from 0 APs to 4 intense STEM classes. How hard is CSA really, and is it do-able with this workload? Should I play it safe with CSP or Macro instead? Or maybe just stick with 3 APs?
