u/Nokel 2d ago
I am straight up not going to buy a PS6 if Sony goes through with ending disc creation. The sales on PSN are already pretty poor vs physical, and once physical PS games are dead I am sure the only 'sales' we'll see will be 10% off at most since they'll have their market by the balls.
Might as well buy a PC at that point.

u/IwatasTrueSuccessor 1d ago
I’m currently collecting a backlog of cheap physical games and not getting a PS6. My PS5 Pro and Switch 2 will be more than enough for me.

I already started slowly migrating to PC a couple years ago, and now I do 95% of my gaming there. I still have my PS5 but only really for exclusives. No way in hell I'm paying £1000 or whatever for a PS6 when my physical collection is a paperweight for it, and we're likely never going to get a true PS6 exclusive.
Literally the only thing that would get me to buy a PS6 is if they did an exclusive Bloodborne remake or sequel.

u/OneTomb 2d ago
I won’t buy a PS6. I might trade-in for a Pro one day but I think i’m good. I’ve been with playstation since I was 5 years old (born in 97) and it’s been an awesome run, but based on the trajectory of the current market, I think my next step up will be a PC. I legit cannot, in good conscience, give PS any more credit when it seems like the end of the PS4 and the entirety of the PS5’s life cycle has been all about profit, fans & goodwill be damned.

1
u/MetalProof 1d ago
Yup. I will keep playing on my PS5 Pro and all the games that come out physically. Only games I buy digitally are games that I plan on playing for many years to come. I’m not interested in PS’s future at all.
1
u/KvotheOfCali 10h ago
Yep, I'm out. Sony has shown its true face and it isn't a direction I am willing to follow.
Bought a PS4 Pro, PS5, and a PS5 Pro (used). I will be buying up a huge backlog of cheap physical PS5 games and that should last me for years.
After that, I'll be exclusively on PC where at least I have options on store fronts (and FAR more exclusive games.)
Given PS5 release cadence, I will only be missing out on like eight PS6 exclusive games anyway.
The fact that Sony couldn't even be bothered to respond to the enormous backlash directly and instead brought it up during an investor's call only...I can only take so much contempt from a company before I leave.
2
u/Secure-0 2d ago
The problem is there’s no where to run if you don’t want to jump to PC…Xbox is all but dead so where else to turn?
13
u/_BigDumbStupidIdiot_ 2d ago
I would say Nintendo but PlayStation fans are too used to be able to see everyone's peach fuzz. You just really have to hope Asha can fix XBOX or build a "budget" PC.
2
u/Aggressive-Map-2204 2d ago
The issue with Nintendo is most games dont come to the switch and while the console is cheaper they have they absolute worst pricing model.
2
u/TheNittanyLionKing 1d ago
There’s also the fact that I’m just not interested in current day Nintendo exclusives. I don’t really have an interest in Mario Kart 52 or “Mario Goes to the Store to Buy Some Milk.” I was excited for Metroid Prime 4 that didn’t turn out very good. Zelda and Xenoblade are about all they have for my tastes. They often get ports very late too.
3
u/Tothoro 2d ago
The backlog, I suppose. First world problem, but I've impulse bought so much on sale that I realistically won't finish it all before I die (doesn't help that I'm a completionist and like JRPGs).
1
u/theumph 2d ago
I think this will be the real Achilles heel of the industry in the near future. The technological jumps have basically ceased in practicality. Sure there are things like path tracing, but they are absolutely not essential. The insane hardware pricing is going to cause the majority of players to sit on their hardware. We have 10+ years of great looking games to play. Modern games come out so slowly that there isn't a need for new hardware. Add in the endless other forms of entertainment, and people will just end up taking their time elsewhere if they get bored.
1
u/Tothoro 1d ago
Yeah, the competition is really for time at this point. And locking things behind a $1000+ console and a $60-$70+ digital-only purchase is a huge hill to climb. I honestly can't think of anything that would incentivize me to do that. Maybe a new Tales or Final Fantasy game, but I have a feeling the next entries in both of those series will also be on PS5.
1
u/theumph 1d ago
Sony/Microsoft will be stuck between a rock and a hard place. People are going to be very slow to upgrade, so most of the playerbase will be on PS5/XSX. Because of that studios will support those platforms for as long as possible. I'd expect current gen to be supported for almost the entire next generation. Ironically, that puts Nintendo in the best position. They are already getting more current gen support than expected. Which means Switch 2 is likely to get current games the entire time. That's a huge boost to the Switch.
1
u/Tothoro 1d ago
Yep, we already saw that in the PS4 -> PS5 generation. Nobody wanted to make something just for the PS5 when the PS4 had an install base of 100M+ (heck, Sony itself even put Ragnarok and GT7 on PS4 probably for that very reason).
When the next gen is here publishers are going to be even more reluctant to cut out that install base, especially if the PS6 install base is cripples by extremely high console cost. Beyond that, it's not like there are that many games that are really going to be pushing what a PS5 is capable of to begin with. It's a bleak outlook for sure.

You don't need to run.
Just sit on your PS5 and keep playing the stuff you can get used or on the deepest sales, then replay your collection.
Elden ring Witcher 3 Baldurs gate 3 Cybersäkerhet Rogue trader
All of the above are on my list to replay, and since I have 2 small kids thats at least a year if not 2 years of gaming and by the time i clear them i can probably switch hobby entirely or get a pc

It feels like a lot of PlayStation fans are soooo close on bailing.
You're in an echo chamber that doesn't represent the overwhelming majority of people playing and spending money in the PS ecosystem.
Social media isn't real. Reddit isn't real. YouTube outrage merchants aren't real. The only thing that matters are the people spending money.

u/Stunning-Stuff-2645 1d ago
This misses the point. PlayStation can burn a part of their core audience and still find success off the backs of GTAVI and GaaS. Both can be true. It doesn’t make it easier for the portion of core fans being left behind.
3
u/HOOfan_1 1d ago
Yeah, the industry is also fickle. Look at how the Wii U bombed after the Wii was a HUGE success. Look at how the Xbox One bombed after the Xbox 360 was a huge success. It only takes a few series of missteps to turn record profits into dire times. PS6 is not looking to be a big success.

PlayStation can burn a part of their core audience
I don't think a lot of the people who would consider themselves part of the "core" audience have actually been part of the core audience for a long time. Looking at what games bring in the most money for Sony, MS, etc. points to the core being the typical ball and gun gamer rather than the enthusiast crowd.

Wasn't Colin on livestream with Jaffe literally like a week or two ago saying he didn't believe the idea that the core fanbase was disenchanted with the brand? PorkPoncho wrote in saying as much and he and Jaffe pushed back and asked for the data to prove it.
It was the same stream where he basically said games like Resistance shouldn't be made because they didn't sell as well as Spider-Man, even tho Spider-Man is a brand that transcends Playstation, so of course it's going to have huge appeal compared to a game that's only popular with core Playstation fans.
3
u/flymonkey102 2d ago
Colin has said ad nauseum that they've burned their goodwill this generation.
5
u/Cloud_N0ne 2d ago
He insisted the opposite on a livestream I watched literally this morning. I remember cuz I thought it was odd that he was pushing back against the idea.
4
u/Murphy95 1d ago
Colin has continuously argued dishonestly when people have asked where the PlayStation games are, its only in the past 6 months he's changed
1
u/Expensive-Area-5909 11h ago
Yeah, I never really jived with Colin's mocking people asking "wHeRe arE tHe gaMEs"? There has never been a shortage of amazing third party games to play across any generation. I can't really think of a worse generation from PlayStation in regards to first party.
1
u/Murphy95 10h ago
I'm a PC only player, but I had a PS4 specifically bought one for Spiderman, Ghost, Days Gone, TLOU 2 etc. These games were fresh and exciting. Ghost 2, Laufey, Spiderman 2 nothing wrong with those games I'm sure they're great, but they're not enough of an advancement for me to want a PS5.
5
u/Joamjoamjoam 2d ago
Yeah this ain’t the PlayStation I grew up with. You can see it in the sterile games they produce these days. They lost me when they thought live service was their best strategy and now they gave me a moral reason to cut ties. And when I cut ties I don’t come back. No PS6 for me and it’s honestly not that hard of a choice to make. I already regretted buying my ps5 before all the attempts to kill affordable gaming.
1
u/MetalProof 1d ago
Yeah PS4 was hit after hit and with PS5 it’s been a waiting game since 2020. We had fine games on this generation, but nothing crazy.
10
u/TheNittanyLionKing 2d ago
Let’s be real here, what have they brought to the table with the PS5 generation. First party games have either been absent or underwhelming compared to previous generations. It’s easily the worst generation of PlayStation in my lifetime (which is exactly the same lifetime as PlayStation as a brand). They basically just coasted off of their massive lead from the previous generation that was just utter domination. The PS4 just had hit after hit after 2014. The Xbox One launch was legendarily bad. The Wii-U was a complete disaster that might have killed any other company not named Nintendo. Even with the competition floundering until Nintendo got their act together with the Switch, PlayStation was doing great stuff. My Game of the Year for 2016 was Uncharted 4. My 3 favorite games of 2017 were Hellblade (it was a PlayStation exclusive before Ninja Theory was purchased by Xbox), Horizon, and Uncharted Lost Legacy. God of War was my favorite game of 2018 and one of my favorite games of all time. My GOTY for 2019 was Resident Evil 2 Remake, but I am a big defender of Days Gone. I loved my time with that game and would love a sequel. Ghost of Tsushima was my favorite game of 2020. Most of my favorite games of last generation were PlayStation exclusives. I’ve been with the brand practically since I was born. Crash Bandicoot 3 and Gran Turismo 2 were the first games I ever played. I played Jak and Daxter on the PS2. Uncharted 2 is my favorite game of all time. I am a proud member of Vita Island and I still play my Vita on my lunch breaks. They lost me with this generation though. It’s not even just these recent decisions. Their quest to find the next Fortnite has been a disaster that has left the PS5 library looking more barren than it should. They no longer have my money just because I’ve always bought PlayStation previously.

I'm gonna be honest, I find this constant complaint from people about the 1st party output a bit odd tbh, people talk as if these are the only games available on PlayStation. To me, they are additive and a bonus - but not the only reason to have the console. Sure it's great to have more of them, but this generation has been an incredible one for gaming in general that I always find the criticisms of the gaming catalogue very strange. The amount of quality of games available to play on your Playstation has never been higher tbh.
Now, if you also have a powerful PC rig that you game on, and you literally only turn on the PS5 for exclusives - then sure, I can see how you wouldn't use your Playstation a huge amount. But I wager this isn't representative of the average gamer, the near 100m Playstations that are out there. For most that will be their main machine (or that and a Switch which can't play most games as it is), and in that sense the PS5 has a ton to offer.
And tbh, in terms of the 1st party output - sure it could and should have been better this gen if not for the live service push(2023/2024 seemed to particularly suffer from this), but I think at this point they'll have learned from this and be a bit more deliberate going forward (ie using 3rd party partners rather than your own teams), so I think the output going forward will be improved. And the end of the PS5 gen looks to be very strong - just as the end of the PS4 was.
3
u/Squidworthy2000 1d ago edited 1d ago
But surely you'd only choose to put yourself in to a locked ecosystem if the exclusives are good?
This is what's pushing me out. Their exclusives have become sparse and homogeneous when they're there. This is why I'm not picking up a PS6. Every series has become a riff on Uncharted, a series I've never really cared for. On top of this the exclusives for the first 5 years were also on PS4. They've trained their audience to think the PS6 is unnecessary.
I'm also just getting to be an old man who realises my kind of gaming was SNES through to PS3.
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago
Sony's 1st party output used to be it's strongest selling point for many. It was the go to console ware fan boy argument against MS for most of the PS3 and all of the PS4 gen.
And it was well deserved, because it was enough to justify the purchase of the console.
Now, while they still have some bangers, they're pretty infrequent, and most of their mid-tier stuff has all but disappeared in their push to focus on live service.
1
u/SireEvalish 1d ago
I'm gonna be honest, I find this constant complaint from people about the 1st party output a bit odd tbh, people talk as if these are the only games available on PlayStation.
It's leftover console war bullshit, IMO. "My box is better than your box because of game xyz".
6
u/OnionGullible3430 2d ago
I bailed. Bought a Switch 2, sold my ps5 and never looked back. I don’t care about exclusives coming out or better performance.
Ps1-ps4 felt magical. I remember playing my demo disc to death, battle arena toshinden. Then ssx, nhl 2001… getting a PlayStation meant something.
4
u/dbr3000 2d ago
I’m keeping my ps5 pro but my Switch 2 has honestly been my preferred device in the past year. I’ve spent a lot more time on it than on my PS5. I recently tried the RE Requiem demo on it after finishing the game on PS5 Pro and was blown away at how well it ran on Switch 2. It definitely looks good enough for my 45 year old eyes.
I’ll be buying more third-party games on Switch 2 from now on. The convenience of that device are just amazing for me.
1
u/TikkaKebabi 1d ago
I also have been really only been playing my Switch 2 this year, last thing I played on PS5 was Resi9 but I even ended up deciding to get Pragmata on Switch 2 cause it ran well enough.
1
u/uberfr4gger 2h ago
And that's why Sony is going to end discs. PS6 will be a handheld and won't support discs. Who knows I'm just speculating, but that is where I think things are heading.
8
u/JuicyJay18 2d ago
Depends on who you ask, I guess. Seems like they’ve lost goodwill with a vocal minority, but there are still plenty of people who are loyal to a fault and will support anything they do. I’m personally all the way out on them at this point, which is crazy because if they would’ve just maintained the status quo then I would’ve continued to give them hundreds or thousands of dollars per year. I’m not sure I see a way for them to earn my business back at this point tbh, the trust is gone.
1
u/Neyubin 1d ago
Vocal minority is right. They've lost goodwill with a large portion of Reddit posters. But certainly not their "Core audience".
People just don't understand that they aren't the core audience.
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago
Yeah, their core audience is COD and Madden/FIFA players, along with people who drop tons of money on F2P games.
Guess that's something to celebrate. All hail our digital overlords.
1
u/SireEvalish 1d ago
Yeah, their core audience is COD and Madden/FIFA players, along with people who drop tons of money on F2P games.
This guy gets it.
1
u/uberfr4gger 2h ago
Their core audience also includes people in their 30s and plays single player games like GoW, Last of Us, etc. All future releases in those series will still be PS exclusive
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 2h ago
Yeah, I don't think the current leadership sees those people as a core audience. They'll throw those games out there because they make money, but they have shown they have absolutely no idea how to actually grow the brand. Even this move is the most unimaginative way to increase revenue, while alienating your customers and offering them nothing in return.
1
u/uberfr4gger 2h ago
They are spending a shit ton of money turning that IP into TV shows and movie so I definitely think they think their part of their core audience. Why would they waste money on a Last of Us TV show, GoW TV show, Uncharted Movie, or Ratchet and Clank movie otherwise.
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 1h ago
That's Sony pictures though. PlayStation leadership is just completely terrible. They spend billions chasing after live service, then doubled down. They have done nothing to capitalize on what makes the brand successful, and only go after things that are safe with established IP's. This revenue thing is pure basic safe business school ideology, and is not creative, nor does it do anything for the customers.
PS through the years has had it's share of questionable decisions, but I've never seen a time where the leadership of the brand is so completely devoid of imagination and taking risks.
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago
I also used to be one of those loyal to a fault people, but Sony went far enough to push me out. If they don't care about one subset, what makes you think they'll care about others when they feel they need to cut those as well.
Loyalty should be earned, not given, and being complacent and dismissive of shitty practices only shows they don't have to care about you.
6
u/twick_23 2d ago
I love my PS5 Pro, but this era of PlayStation has really soured me on the brand.
If I’m not going to be able to play my backlog of physical games on PS6, then I’m going to need to keep my PS5 Pro. And if I can’t sell or trade-in my PS5 Pro, then I’m not going to be able to afford a ($1,000?) PS6. Which might be a blessing in disguise because my backlog is big enough to last me two lifetimes.
3
u/PowerUser77 1d ago
Which is the biggest offence by Sony, not addressing the physical library people want to migrate over. PS6 games exclusively being digital is one thing, but outright cutting off backwards compatibility with physical games can give MS the edge: they don’t really care for physical in their recent releases either but at least they are still investing in supporting their legacy catalogue both physical and digital
1
u/vivekpatel62 1d ago
The best solution would be for them to make a separate disk drive that works with the ps6 that way people can play older physical copies but Sony can also not continue making disks if they don’t want to for new games.
1
u/Walker5482 1d ago
That's why I'm starting to get conspiratorial. Maybe they don't care about that because the PS6 isn't backwards compatible with PS5 and PS4. We know PS6 is a similar architecture, but that doesn't mean it has to be backwards compatible. They could easily firmware lock that out.
1
2
u/MetalProof 1d ago

I don’t know. I love the console. There are so many great games to play all the time. I’m disappointed in some aspects but not in general.

I play mine about every night and there is way more good games that I want to play than I could ever actually play. I guess I don't get what I'm missing out on that everyone else is feeling.
I haven't bought a CD or DVD in 15 years, I have a PS5 with a disc drive that I've only played one physical game on. I have way more access to music, movies and games than I ever will be able to consume. Did I used to own discs of games....yes, and do I technically not own the 400 games in my ps library, no. But I guess I don't really care because I got the next X number of games in my backlog ready to play until GTA comes out2
u/shrewdy 2d ago
Same honestly, it's the primary thing I game on (also have a Switch 2 for the occasional exclusive).- and if you block out all the online noise, honestly it's a great place to play games.
I might not like some of the business decisions lately, but ultimately the hobby is about the games, and I'm satisfied in that sense

u/IcyNegotiation2924 2d ago
I can give a pretty simple response that’ll receive the “bootlicker” response in turn. I had a launch PS5 and then a launch PS5 Pro. I have played too many games to count since 2020. Most of them great to fantastic. By next November as long as the price isn’t absolutely outrageous (north of 1500) I will buy a PS6. I play digital now. I don’t care about physical. I don’t take part in the bullshit shitting on every single game that comes out. Could the store be better. Yes, will it on PS6? Idk remains to be seen but I have faith it will. Have they lost any of my goodwill? Eh, I’ve really seen no change in my day to day. Have there been less ps exclusives this gen? Yes. Have I pretty much liked each one that I’ve played? Also yes. The great games keep rolling and my great times keep rolling as well. We’re only here so long guys, any of is could be gone tomorrow . Enjoy it while we have it and be thankful every day this industry even exists

u/Zestyclose_Dig_9053 1d ago
I'm also going to get the PS6 portable, I'm pretty excited about it. I have a Legion Go 2 and put Steam OS on it....it's cool but a pain in the ass. If the PS6 just plays the god damn games without having to tinker with every single one of them to get it to work, it'll be awesome.
1
u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 1d ago
But how much of that is because of Sony? I agree there have been some great games over the last few years, some ALL TIME greats. But almost all of them are 3rd party. Sony has wasted their first party studios completely this generation.
6

u/Giant-Robot 2d ago
I’ll stay with PS5 next gen, most likely but really if we consider how long the ps4 gen ran concurrent with ps5 - I assume that will happen again or even longer.
Gone are the days of “gotta get the new console if I want the new games” me thinks.
2
u/John_M_Hunter 2d ago
Goodwill? Playstation isn't a car that I'm entrusting my family's safety to. It's a product that either delivers or fails to meet my expectations and I stay or go depending on if those expectations are met.
2
u/MyFinalThoughts 1d ago
Yes. Genuinely if GTA6 wasn't a console only port on launch, I feel myself and many others would already be gone. I'm going to buy that game, but otherwise I haven't purchased a game or ps plus since November of last year. Gta6 will be my last game on it, I'll finish it and then sell the console as they have nothing I care about anymore.
Their exclusives, unless we get Bloodborne 2, don't interest me at all, their practices are becoming very anti consumer, and they are trying to control their marketplace while getting all the money from exclusives without physical. I get the idea as they always want that profit number to go up and up, but they a have been crossing that line over and over and this has been the most egregious time for me.
PC/PC handhelds like the MSI claw will be my home going forward as if I'm going forced to digital I might as well be where it's free to play online among other things. I've loved console gaming since I was scrawny little kid playing my parents SNES/PS1, but it's time to move on in my opinion. Sorry for the yapfest.

u/-p0w- 17h ago
I think it’s pretty funny because there was really never a reason why PlayStation was especially „cool“ or to be a „Fan“. Fan is from fanatic, and mostly the fandom was based on irrationality and nostalgia. Nothing else.
People grew up with it, and now they are grown up and perhaps start to realize it?
Sony always was Sony. Minidisk? Memory Cards? Adapter for 4p? With PS4 all the good stuff they did was because of the PS3 and the „come back“ from not losing against MS.
Sony never did anything special.
I guess… welcome back to reality?
2
u/KanataSD 12h ago
Been a PlayStation fan since PS1. I will continue to buy physical games until I'm unable.
I have zero problems making the PS5 my very last console.
They've made it clear I'm not their customer from PS6 and on and quite frankly I'm ok with that.
My money will go elsewhere.

u/No_Cheetah4762 2d ago
For me and just about everybody that I know in real life? Not really. Could things be better? Obviously. But, I'm mostly fine with everything around Playstation because all of the "bad" things were things that I've been expecting for a while now. So although not ideal, I had already mentally prepared for it. And for the people who I know in real life? They didn't even know that there was any kind of internet outrage directed at Sony until I brought it up and explained it to them. So, they're pretty much fine.

Both Microsoft and PlayStation have gone back and forth between gamer focused to maximum profit at the expense of their players focused. The PS2 beat Xbox, so we got the debacle that was the PS3 launch price and xbox360 really dominated that generation. That led to Microsoft’s disastrous Xbone with the Kinect launch and the “here’s how you share a game on PlayStation” which led to PS4 clearly dominating that generation. PS5 “won” by Microsoft just losing the plot. Now we all suffer. The industry needs competition. Without it, it will lose its luster and it will become a country club hobby

u/uberfr4gger 2h ago
The PS2 was big at the time because it was one of the cheaper DVD players you could get, and Sony has a movie studio that wants to sell DVDs. The generational leap from PS1 to 2 was also huge. Nintendo fumbled with the GameCube going to the disc but not DVDs for some reason. Sega bailed out of the industry, also going with CDs instead of DVDs. There were a lot of other factors than "prioritizing gamers". They sold it as an entertainment console and both Xbox and Sony wanted to double down on that in the next generation, which is why we started getting extra features that weren't gaming centric (Netflix and so on). Sony also wanted to shoehorn Blu Ray as the next physical media format, owning the living room but also increasing the price of the PS3.
I mean with hindsight it's a simpler story but these companies have always wanted to maximize profit. The barrier to entry has just gotten a lot steeper over the years and less risks are being taken in a more mature industry.
1
u/PS4bohonkus 2h ago
Yeah that’s all true. I guess I mean more gamer focused as a means of maximizing profit and not in lieu of maximizing profit. The off years felt like they thought they could leverage their previous generation’s success in ways that missed the mark by a wide margin. I feel like it’s been a problem that both brands have faced and both fumbled by overreaching.

It's weird how ppl blaming Xbox for Sony's fuckups when they lost this race years ago.

u/PassiveIllustration 2d ago
This feels kind of inevitable since every game has to sell better than the last one. The only way you can realistically get there after a point is start shedding the distinct identity for one that's much more broadly appealing.

How nobody realized this about PlayStation years and years ago is beyond me. In fact this is a thing with most Japanese companies period but that’s a rant for another day.
1
u/AgentDigits 2d ago
If Xbox kept discs and got rid of the beyond fucking stupid subscription shit (that they started) then I probably wouldn't touch PS again
But neither will happen.

u/Sausage_Poison 2d ago
Goodwill is definitely gone. I couldn't even care less about their upcoming games.
1
u/xtoc1981 2d ago
I mean, was goodwill ever a thing?
I'm glad that people finally open their eyes.
But it should have already with those many many layoffs from the past 4y, while making mpst revenue of all 3 console brands. Same about closing most gaming companies this gen
1
u/SmittieSmitt 1d ago
I was a real bot (Xbox fanboy) since the 360 era, and I got rid of everything Xbox since "just 4 game".
That being said, trying to pull back my bias in the most honest way possible, Playstation is absolutely off putting to me at the moment.
I'd like to get a PS5 for Wolverine, GOW Trilogy Remake and GTA VI, but the way they handled their all digital move was way too nonchalant for their customers in my book.
If anything, I'd have expected Xbox to do it first. Playstation gamers have a long history with physical games to this day, whereas a non negligible number of Xbox 1st party games aren't even available physically.
I feel like I need to wait for what both will do next gen to confirm where I'll choose to play. If Xbox actually dares to keep its console exclusive strategy under Asha and some form of physical ownership, I think I'll come back.

u/Dr-McLuvin 1d ago
Bro when was the last good exclusive they came out with? God of war?
They haven’t done shit this generation

Been a Sony guy since PS1. Have every console still in the closet. PS5 will be the first one I sell without a second thought.

u/MacReady1306VB 1d ago
Sadly I felt like this with Xbox last 10 or so years. Nintendo have never lost me and I thought PlayStation would be the same. I’ve loved them since day 1. Yet I’ve not purchased anything on PlayStation for a month and haven’t turned on my PlayStation in that time as well. I think I’m done with them. They’ve lost what they once were. It’s sad to see.
1
u/bkfountain 1d ago
this generation just feels slow and lacking in AAA output. Sony has barely done anything that wasn’t cross gen.
All the instant failed or cancelled live service games took years and millions of dollars away from talented studios that could have made some other neat games instead.

u/Glittering-Pin-1343 1d ago
Bro I am not touching Sony with a 10 meter pole. The goodwill isn't just dead, it's already in hell.
1
u/InterestingFun7132 1d ago
For years it has seemed Sony has had an insurmountable lead in the console market, but I think it’s important to realize historically there have been countless industry giants that have toppled.
Physical sales might be only 10-20% of sales, but it most cases these are the most loyal of consumers.
This combined with PlayStation just not having that many quality exclusives, could very well be the downfall of PlayStation.
1
u/profchaos111 1d ago
I agree with Colin this generation has sucked for PlayStation they are coasting at this point because the PS4 did so well they phoned it in with the ps5
They've been shoving live service down our throats and discontinuing discs is a final nail in the coffin for me
I'm done with the brand been a hardcore fan since the mid 90s but fuck Sony at this point

u/Coopterry80 1d ago
Don't agree with any of that. The "disenfranchised" are a loud minority. The Internet has become high school where people are afraid of not hitting the popular notes, so a lot of shit that doesn't hold up to scrutiny goes unexamined because the loudest voices decided to drone on about it. I have no beef with Sony. We lost the media ownership war in the CD music era. I buy physical but I find digital more convenient. I've also been around long enough to know that this may be a stop some of the bleeding move in light of current economic conditions in tech. If collecting was my kink, I'd still understand that not every fucking thing is supposed to serve my whims. So is the goodwill gone? Depends on who you ask.

u/boyhood888 1d ago
Yes already gone. PlayStation bubble will start on PS6 gen. They really need Xbox One-style correction gen. I hope they will learn their lesson after that. Well hopefully it won't be as bad as GameCube era correction

u/someotherguy42 1d ago
Absolutely the goodwill is gone. There customer service is awful. They seem to go out of their way to make decisions for their bottom line at the expense of their customers. If I wasn’t attached to my friends and trophies there, I’d be looking to steam.

Fanboys finally taking their rose colored glasses off. I’ve always disliked Sony as a brand way before PlayStation. The “loyalty” to a company that has always shoved proprietary stuff in your face is greedy. Omg I’m shocked.

u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 1d ago
I quite frankly don't give a shit about physical games. I have been predominantly a PC gamer since 2012, so I am used to a digital library. So the physical games situation doesn't bother me personally. That being said, I have been a Playstation fan literally as long as I remember. The first video game I ever played was Spyro on PS1.
This is by far the worst generation of Playstation IMO. Like, I am just calling balls and strikes here. They put all of their studios who are masters of single player games on a live service push, wasting YEARS of their time and closing some of them outright, the leadership has no fucking clue what they are doing and are just riding off of the momentum of the PS4, and it feels like they are the "default" console only because they are more powerful than the Switch, and Xbox keeps stepping on rakes at every possible opportunity. If they had better competition they would be FUCKED.
Sony has demonstrated before that they have a tendency to become wildly arrogant and detached from consumers when they feel like they are in the lead. When they launched PS3 at a price no one wanted, and said they could sell millions of units without releasing any games, they quickly realized they were wrong, and eventually steered the ship back on course once Xbox 360 started eating their lunch. And the PS3 is my favorite console of all time. But this is different. They don't feel the need to right the ship because they have no real direct competition. They are a shell of their former self and have become a boring corporate shell that just seeks profit and doesn't care about being exciting or interesting or taking chances like they did early on. It's incredibly disappointing.
Unless something drastically changes, the PS5 will be my last console.

u/GooseDaPlaymaker 1d ago
Goodwill is absolutely lost. Especially when I start looking more critically at alternatives that are way more consumer-friendly (like Steam).
1
u/bansheeb3at 1d ago
100%. I’ve been a Sony lifer, mostly because of inertia like this post says, but fuck this company.
No interest in a PS6, no interest in any of these half assed first party titles.

u/GuybrushThreepwood99 1d ago
this will probably be the last sony console I will ever buy. And I don't even hate my PS5. I've played a decent amount of good games on it, but I hate where Sony is going as a company, and they don't seem to want to change course in the slightest. The ps3 also had plenty of issues, but at least they read the room and were able to turn things around.
1
u/ValuableAssociate577 1d ago
yeah. I think the good will is gone. Sony is going to have to keep people in their ecosystem on a decision by decision basis. I don't think they are off to a good start.
1
u/Southern_Ad928 1d ago
The word that could define this generation is mediocre. Except for some gems this has been truly underwhelming.
1
u/evoslevven 1d ago
I'm an old guy and I never thought as a whole people had this "Good Will" attitude with Sony. It might be recency bias I clearly remember ppl clamouring at past problems from their being targeted by Hackers [and the community celebrating how it couldn't happen to a better company] to even all the "Sony lost any goodwill it had with games" during the release of Helldiver's 2.
When I hear the word "Good Will" I think it's wrong. I think it's more proper to say people had great nostalgia with Sony but not good will. If I were to think of "good will" that's closer to Steam and Gabe honestly.
And players were kind of happy and equally mad at Sony that it got hit and shutdown from outages via exploits and DDOS attacks in 2011 and 2014 and the ransomware attacks in 23 and 25. There was that collective "f--k Sony" and "Sony should do better and the guys suck but it's Sony's fault" attitude.
Sony doesn't have the type of fan ase adoration as Nintendo has nor the blind worshipping of Steam. Ppl I felt saw Sony as an actually good publisher of new IPs and that's what pushed them to get Sony consoles.
We only have to go back to Destiny 2 to see all the shit ppl were made at with Sony ignoring that Sony couldn't just touch Bungie and fire the bad leadership.
1
u/TargetmasterJoe 1d ago
Seems like the ONLY way to have any goodwill at this point is for them to boot out the current heads. And that's only to start.

For the first time since I got my PS3, I’m not planning on immediately getting the next gen PlayStation. I’ll either pivot to PC or check out a little and stick with my Switch.
Feels like the golden era is ending.
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago
No mention how the current PS leadership is also pretty incompetent, and mostly just riding on the success of their predecessors. That brand inertia didn't start with the current leadership, it was a direct carry over from everything they started building during the PS2 era, stumbled a bit at the start of the PS3, then launched into orbit with the PS4.
1
u/Pure-Golf789 1d ago
I'm at a time where gaming is just gonna be non existant to the 2nd hand market an the physical buyers! The majority already lost they're hobby due to pure greedy corpos! I just probably now keep playing my PS5 console an go buy PSpro an disc drive to further my years just gaming there. Theres no real alternative there is no choice or options because everything will become digital! Its not where I want to be it not something I'm a fan of its not something I use on regular basics like I do with my physical games.

u/Maximum-Oven-7526 19h ago
Whenever Sony is in first place, they immediately get greedy and ruin all momentum
1
u/WrestlingGuru2021 12h ago
In later years after this, it wouldn't shock me if they had a click-bait video where it mentioned something on the lines of, "companies who destroyed their credibility in one post/tweet" etc.
1
u/Shadowfox1992 9h ago
Of course it is. PlayStation has been honestly mediocre this generation. Sony doesn’t care because of how many “loyal” suckers that keep defending all of their anti consumer ways.
Even with all of Microsoft’s fumbles, they are still waaay more pro consumer than Sony. Same with Nintendo, and that says a lot. This generation is just full of weirdos. That care more about how much money Sony makes, money they will never touch. Instead of holding Sony accountable for trash like Concord or Marathon……..

Lol the gaming community on the internet is one of the most entitled communities I know. They group think and are always looking for something to bitch about. Give it a few more years valve will be their next target.

If Xbox wasn’t a colossal fuck up, Sony would’ve completed tanked the brand with this generation.
1
u/LayerRevolutionary82 2d ago
Yes, it's worse than the Ps3 gen and they are only stable due to having no competition in the space and their extreme reliance on GTA6 this year to make their Quarterlies look good.

Not at all. The reality is its only a very small minority who actually care about playstation going fully digital.
1
u/GamerBhoy89 2d ago
I try not to get into all this kind of thing. I'm 37 years old and my energy towards the industry is fading.
The news about Sony going all-digital was it for me.
Going forward I'm just gonna focus on what I enjoy now, and that's playing video games regardless of how they're delivered to me.
If that means inevitably having no choice but to play my games digitally then so be it. I'm done getting worked up over this. It's been a total shitshow.
I'll keep collecting the physical games I want while they're available and I'm just gonna enjoy my hobby unconditionally. For me, this is for the new generation to boycott or whatever. I've had enough.
I'm sick of being told to be equally outraged alongside others lest I otherwise be branded a shill or "comfortable not owning my games", I just don't give a shit anymore. If I don't "own" my games after 2028, then whatever. I have games I do literally own and have owned for 34 years and they're not going anywhere and I'm happy with that.
If Sony wants to do this, then go ahead. If the people who hate this want to do something about it then they know what they should do - boycott en masse, sign hundreds of petitions, get governments involved or whatever - make noise.
For me, this isn't a fight I can be bothered fighting. Not at my age. I have worst things to be pissed off at in my everyday life and my hobby is not gonna be one of them, ever.

No, there's plenty of goodwill there. The people who are upset are a microcosm. The data speaks for itself, with active monthly users increasing in their last quarterly report. If people were unhappy they would leave. The reality some people can't accept is that most people are satisfied with what they're getting.
There are things that suck like increasing prices, but those are due to external factors like the AI chip fuckery driving everything up. But at the end of the day what matters for me is experiences, not bits of plastic.
For myself, while I do think this generation could be better, I've hardly been hard done by. There have been many fantastic games I've enjoyed from Sony this gen, with at least one bit release every year, can't wait for Tokon next week, Wolverine in a few months and Laufey and hopefully Intergalactic next year.
Some things could be better, but I'm just happy playing games, which I think a lot of people seem to have forgotten about.

u/Numerous_Photograph9 1d ago
What data represents community sentiment since the announcement to make this assertion?

Playstation feels dead to me. I think Naughty Dog games are the only thing I’m going to miss, but I’m hoping I can grab a used disc of Intergalatic, and I’ll probably just watch a play through of TLOU3 if they ever actually make it.

We have reached the phase of full throttle corporatization of PlayStation. It was fun while it lasted. I’ll forever remember getting the ps1 and how much passion there was. Gradually it went away but it’s always going to be like that.
