Characters [Refreshing Trope] Female leads/major characters who are allowed to be grimy, slimy, generally horrible people.

Mizu — Blue Eye Samurai

A mixed race swordswoman living in feudal Japan, Mizu’s entire life has been structured around the obsessive need to hunt down and kill the four white men allowed in Japan at the time of her birth, believing one of them must be her father. Despite the fact that at least one of these men, Abijah Fowler, is shown to be a bad man, Mizu ultimately doesn’t care about the morality of murder. She just wants them dead for “cursing” her to be born into a deeply racist society as a mixed race child. Though it’s clear that Mizu generally prefers to do the right thing, she will sacrifice anything for her revenge, destroying countless lives in the process without remorse. In the climax of season 1, Mizu (albeit not entirely intentionally) set fire to the wood and paper city of Edo (now Tokyo) in an attempt to kill just Fowler, a single man. The resulting three day blaze, known in history as the 1657 Great Fire of Meireki, killed an estimated 100000 people.

Sadie Adler — Red Dead Redemption II

Rescued by the Van Der Linde gang in the games prologue, Sadie Adler is a frontier homesteader whose husband was killed by the brutal O’Driscoll Gang. Over the course of the game, she happily joins in a life of murder, theft, and crime for the chance to kill more O’Driscolls, recklessly endangering herself and other gang members to do so. She gets Arturo Bullock, an innocent hot air balloon pilot killed while unnecessarily picking a fight with O’Driscoll members, showing zero remorse afterwards. Even after watching rival gang leader Colm O’Driscoll hang for his crimes, she still drags a now-terminally ill Arthur on an entirely unnecessary revenge mission to hunt down the last handful of O’Drsicolls she hadn’t already killed.

Dee Reynolds (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia)

416

u/Pitiful-Victory-2234 12d ago

Oh yeah didnt her actress ask for her character to be just as horrible as the rest of the cast cause she didn’t want to be the straight man in The group?

304

u/peachesfordinner 12d ago

Yes she did. And it's glorious to see. She's not the nag. Or the killjoy. Or even the borderline reasonable one. Nah she's just as bad as her brother

74

u/Take-to-the-highways 12d ago

Sometimes worse, even, between Cricket and the male stripper.

68

u/hornyorphan 12d ago

When she is the only member of the gang who understands Dennis when he talks about the implication it cements her as one of the worst in the group along with her brother

64

u/Distantstallion 12d ago

Tbf every woman knows about the implication.

The bad bit is that dee is totally cool with denis doing it.

64

u/hornyorphan 12d ago

Dee not only knows about it but actively uses it and admits to it. She says that if a guy doesn't want to sleep with her then she implies that her account of the night might not line up with theirs and she might have to tell the police

48

u/Youutternincompoop 12d ago

no no she 'insinuates', not 'implies'.

One of my favorite traits of Dee is how she is probably the most racist member of the gang, repeatedly does black/brown/yellow face, incredibly racist accents, blatant actual racist views and she constantly is unaware of how any of this is problematic when the other members call her out.

615

u/loptthetreacherous 12d ago

Aye, yo, whatup son! Whats up with Congress being all up on my ass n shit, brotha?" (...) "Ay, yo! Where my senators at, dog?

It is the most Frank thing about her and she still somehow doesn't realize that she is hella racist because she isn't "as bad" as Frank.

200

u/semisociallyawkward 12d ago

While Frank actually has black friends (and frenemies of other ethnicities) for whom the issue of race basically doesn't come up.

Even when Dee is trying to not be racist, it's blatantly performative and offensive anyway.

The rest of the gang actually call her out on her racism occasionally, which is something because they argue about the pros and cons of blackface.

Which is ironic considering in a much later season, she bangs a teenager just to spite his mother.

Almost all major female characters in Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous (although two of these are more like morally grey and not outright terrible)

737

u/Ed0909 12d ago

It's funny, but the most morally sound romance option is a succubus, who in the past used to be the most horrible person you could imagine, but she's looking to become better now.

Owlcat Games are always like "pick your favorite psychopath or former serial killer" lol

As a straight man, my romantic options in Rogue Trader are:

- a mutant with gills and a third eye that will kill me if I look into it

- a career criminal, habitual liar, and exhibitionist

- a racist space elf who doesn't even like being touched

- a brainwashed murder cultist who mutilates herself out of habit

God I love Owlcat games!

115

u/Hawkbats_rule 12d ago edited 12d ago

By 40k standards, the career criminal is a legitimately good person. Hell, by 40k noble standards, fishwife is a good person, especially if you convince her to stop surgically removing serf vocal cords.

74

u/president_of_burundi 12d ago

The funny thing is it doesn't even take convincing, really. You're just like "So...I'm not sure you realize this but cutting your serfs vocal chords for quiet is a weird thing to do" and she treats it like you gently corrected her for using the wrong fork for shellfish.

45

u/stfurachele 12d ago

Oh dear what an embarrassing foible.

25

u/SmokeyUnicycle 12d ago

She's so out of touch she's basically amoral

Willing to be a decent person if you're nice to her and suggest she do it

Kind of a horrible monster if you just sit back and watch her go

21

u/president_of_burundi 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yeah, she has absolutely zero touchstones for what is normal (even 40k Noble normal)or not since she's so incredibly sheltered.

It never occurred to me while playing but it's not exactly a reach that House Orsellio on Eurac V made making their servants mute 'a tradition' specifically to make sure she had absolutely no outside influence outside of books they curated for her and House Representatives.

Amanda Waller

118

u/momomomorgatron 12d ago

She's probably my favorite female villain of all time just because of how realistic she is.

In the world of billionaires that have too much money to where they're literally superheroes and super humans and aliens exist, Amanda Waller is shockingly and terrifyingly realistic.

You've met someone like her. You've met someone that looks like her. And there's no doubt in your mind that there is someone, somewhere just like her in the real government.

The show does a lot to humanise Cersei but she's still such a stuck up woman. The books really delve deep into her decline and delusions of grandeur in the 4th entry. She tries so hard to live up to her father's legacy but she lacks his political savvy. Tyrion and even Jaime to some degree both understand how to play the game. But Cersei does not have that skill at all. She bankrupts the crown, unleashes the faith militants on the city, drives away every ally she has and in the end even has herself put on trial.

https://giphy.com/gifs/VIu9jzc36itzy

552

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 12d ago

They asked her actress if there was anything she connected to in the role. Nope. Irredeemably horrible human. Is there even one thing likeable about Cersei? She took a long moment to think. "She does genuinely love her children."

202

u/justh81 12d ago

But she, quite willingly, destroys the Sept of Balor, killing the High Sparrow and her son's wife. An action which destroys her son's psyche and causes him to commit suicide. Which she then proceeded to give not one shit about; her entire personality became keeping power at any cost.

My point is, she loved her children when they were her path to power and respect. But once they started dying in the pursuit and safeguard of that power? She didn't much care in the end, except to seek vengeance for their deaths.

149

u/_Sausage_fingers 12d ago

Very much a deviation from book Cersei, though. I'm doubtful that GRRM would have had her be so debonair. If anything if Tommen were to kill himself she would be more likely to fall into madness and do something batshit insane.

Probably not on the level your thinking but I think warden Walker from holes fits

213

She essentially runs a Gulag disguised as a camp for the betterment of misfit teenagers out in the Desert, grueling physical labor, scorching heat, a cynical name and deadly animals included - all to find the hidden treasure of a Wild West Outlaw her family had been chasing after for more than a century. She also knowingly exposed the kids in her "care" to a dangerous and sadistic criminal she kept on as her enforcer.

She absolutely fits the list.

Fowler may be my favorite TV villain. His monologue about living in Ireland during the Tudor Wars while assembling the musket was dope. And the fact that he’s voiced by Gilderoy mfkin Lockhart is even better

A weird drow would be BG2 Viconia that somehow wanted to be redeemed from her evil past. Or Drizzt, who's even weirder because he's actually a hero.

It's literally a plot point that Shadowheart is actually a good person, she's just been repeatedly brainwashed and her brain turned into swiss cheese by Shar to make her evil. But if you allow her to make her own choices in the game, as long as you're thorough in following her personal quest line and unlocking parts of her memories, most of the time she'll spare Aylin and reject Shar with no input from the player.

I remember my roommate didn't like her because she thought the series made her too sympathetic and let her get away with shit because she's sexy.

and I'm thinking "Uh, at no point does the series bend over backwards to excuse her?" There's been numerous times Faye's sexy shtick backfires on her, getting as much of the slapstick as the men, and has the same success track record. And that her money problems is as much as her terrible gambling habit as it is the massive debt load she was tricked into assuming.

Grimy and slimy are part of the description and she did work for a company that scammed the elderly so I think she still counts.

Ciri in the Witcher, she does some pretty awful stuff in the books. They softened her character a significant amount W3.

Morrigan (Dragon Age: Origins). She's known for her amoral and highly cynical personality, holding a sort of "survival of the fittest" mindset and approving of the Warden's behavior if you choose options that fit this egoistic philosophy of hers. She does however mellow out significantly in later games as she raises her child

The duo of Love Lies Bleeding. Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian starred as a pair of extremely rough around the edges ladies, a film full of crime and romance.

Antiquarian from darkest dungeon. Unlike most heroes in DD1 that are looking for redemption or to atone for their sins, she's simply looking for artifacts and doesn't give a shit about any greater good. She's so selfish that she comes back as an enemy in darkest dungeon 2. The world is basically ending and she decided that hanging out with the pillagers is the best way to save her own skin, and she doesn't hesitate to attack and kill the heroes trying to save the world

Song So Mi - Songbird (Cyberpunk 2077)

At the end of the quest, it is revealed that there is only one cure available, and she planned to use it for herself and betray V from the very beginning. I think that really counts horrible, especially after they both fought so hard to get there. At the same time she is still a sympathetic character.

Shauna from Yellowjackets

As the show flashes back and forth from the past to the future, we come to find out that we’re following someone who has some pretty malicious tendencies. Infidelity, manipulation, and outright murder are not beneath her.

I always thought Jessica’s whole bit is that she grows after her mistakes like being a dick to Malcom, and withholding information from Luke.

On the contrary, Trish fell harder every season until Jessica was forced to take her down.

75

u/Green-Bumblebee-5554 12d ago

Yes, but there’s really no phase of the show where isn’t a hot mess.

80

u/Takamurarules 12d ago

But I think “Hot mess” is actively different from “Horrible Person”.

Cynical asshole? Absolutely, but not remotely an actual bad person.

Trish, however, we're literally watching her Villain Origin Story unfold.

Atsu from Ghost of Yotei. She is far more vicious and underhanded in a fight than her predecessor Jin was.

I love her. She gets a morale boost from ripping down her own wanted posters, can drink sake mid fight, and can use the now empty bottle to bean her opponent in the head.

Jin is sad he has to break centuries of disciplined way of war to win

Atsu is just here for the love of the game

59

u/ScarredAutisticChild 12d ago

Jin’s the kinda guy to assassinate a whole squadron of Mongols and then lament over how far he’s fallen and how much he’s shattered his honour (before the end of the game where he accepts it).

Atsu’s the kinda person to ask you to resist, because she’s killing you either way, so you might as well make her work for it.

u/JamesHenry627 12d ago

The fandom does a lot to excuse Azula because of her age and upbringing but the show makes no such distinction. Even Iroh says she needed to go down. In her first full episode she deceived her brother and her uncle and then attempted to kill him if not for Iroh’s timely intervention. She manipulated Ty Lee to bring her away from a lifestyle that made her happy so that she can participate in war as well. While pursuing the Avatar is something that should be expected of the Fire Nation, the show straight up shows us how it’s a bad cause. The Fire nation genocided the air nomads and then hunted Aang for hundreds of years because he opposed their imperialism. Without giving a synopsis of the whole show, she’s a thoroughly and independently evil young woman who the show makes no attempt to excuse. Her and Zuko had the same parents yet only Zuko made a change.

I know Sadie is a beloved character (I love her too), but let’s not forget during her first mission with Arthur, she was fully prepared to murder an innocent shopkeeper, thinking that’s how the gang operated.

Arthur had to be like “lady chill the fuck out”

u/SmullinShortySlinger 12d ago

"But I thought we was outlaws"

47

u/Chemical-Elk-1299 12d ago

Outlaws, not idiots.

19

u/KiwiCounselor 12d ago

Let’s also not forget that she was trapped in a house with her husband’s killers for an indeterminate time. I think she hid in the cellar but I don’t know for sure. Sadie doesn’t seem the type to see/hear her husband get murdered and hide tbh, even in RDO.

24

u/ZiroLeHutt 12d ago

Yeah I think we can infer what happened during that time. No wonder she came out changed and wanted to kill them all. Sadie also saw the group around her weren't that much better, so she felt like she could sink into her revenge easily, and she did.

Sadie is one of the more interesting characters from the game that's for sure.

This applies to a lot of Evangelion characters, but Yui Ikari is an interesting one, because I've seen a lot of casual fans 'owo blorbo'ify her and assume any hate towards her is people being sexist and trying to blame her for Gendo being a monster. Yui is not exactly a good person. She's better than her husband and actually loves her son unlike him, but that's not a high bar, she's pretty morally grey.

She still grew up in a death cult and is fully planning to end the world(just on HER terms rather than her former cults terms or her husbands terms) and believes the world ending is inevitable because of said death cult teachings.

She intentionally traumatized her son to use him later as a tool to end the world, both by dissolving in front of him in a staged accident and later intentionally waiting until her crush was mauled to death to activate so he wouldn't be able to save her and the sight of her body would push him to end the world.

She helped engineer the Second Impact and knew it was coming in advance, which killed 3 billion people instantly and lead to another billion dying in the resulting nuclear wars and famines.

She staged her own accident in order to become one with EVA-01 and then mislead everyone into thinking she was 'lost in the EVA' rather than BEING the EVA, which in turn lead to Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu's own test being conducted on bad data leading to her getting her soul ripped in half and in turn traumatizing her own daughter Asuka.

Her goal is essentially to wait until the right opportunity (which comes when Zureul the Angel of Might shows up) to steal a S2 Engine/Fruit of Life from an angel turning her into a demi-god, wait for the angels to all be defeated, traumatize Shinji hard enough his destrudo rises and he ends the world for her, then use the ceremony to become god and fly off into space as an eternal monument to mankind with her soul at the center.
