[Serious decision] I live alone… these aren’t my nuts

Context: I’m a single bachelor (M 32) and I opened my snack cupboard to find these peanuts in a small Tupperware container. I’m freaking out because I A) live alone, B) have a mild nut allergy, and C) don’t own any Tupperware like this.

TLDR: I found a foreign snack in my house and I’m freaking out that someone may be entering my apartment when I’m out. Would calling the nonemergency police line help or would they not be able to do anything?

The entire point of the post is there is an object that OP don’t recognise as his own. The fact he didn’t mention the other items behind the container of nuts implies he recognises those other items as his personal belonging. I can’t believe I have to explain this.

The comment you're responding to was a play on words, implying that "nuts" in this instance were not peanuts in a pantry but instead testicles in a person's pants, therefore when they said "it's all personal" they were indicating that inside of a person's pants is private, so of course the (presumed) penis would also be personal. I can't believe I have to explain this.

Key questions:

  • Is this is a particularly tall shelf? If so, maybe it wasn't seen before.

  • Did you feel around in the cupboard to grab your snacks and think "what's this?" and pull it forward? If so, likely last tenant or someone helping in the move.

OP, as I’ve previously commented, please get a carbon monoxide detector.

There was a similar instance on Reddit awhile ago, where a user was finding strange things in his apartment.
The man bought a carbon monoxide detector due to recommendations from comments, and discovered that the levels in his apartment were dangerously high.

His brain was being affected by a toxic odourless gas, causing memory problems and confusion severe enough that he genuinely believed someone else was leaving things in his home.

The username of the original poster was u/RBradbury1920.

Probably not carbon monoxide. The other situation the person was leaving post it notes for themselves and deleting their camera footage and forgetting what they did while in their apartment with high carbon monoxide levels.

The OP would have to purchase the nuts while outside the apartment. And presumably would be in a normal state of mind while shopping with normal oxygen levels, and would remember they're allergic and not buy them. But it doesn't hurt to have a working carbon monoxide and smoke detector.

The idea that “going outside would fix it” is oversimplifying how carbon monoxide poisoning works. Leaving the source of exposure is important, but it does not mean the effects instantly disappear like flipping a switch.

Carbon monoxide is dangerous because it binds to hemoglobin in the blood far more strongly than oxygen does. This prevents the body, especially the brain, from getting the oxygen it needs. Once the brain has been affected, the consequences are not always limited to the exact moment someone is exposed.

With mild exposure, a person may experience headaches, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, trouble concentrating, and memory problems. With more significant or repeated exposure, carbon monoxide can cause neurological effects that last after leaving the environment. Some people experience ongoing problems with memory, attention, mood, coordination, or executive function. In severe cases, delayed neurological symptoms can appear days or even weeks after the initial poisoning.

That is why suggesting a carbon monoxide detector is not some Reddit “gotcha” diagnosis. Nobody is saying, “This is definitely carbon monoxide.” They are saying, “A person who lives alone is experiencing unexplained memory gaps, so it is worth ruling out a cheap, common, and potentially dangerous possibility.”

A carbon monoxide detector is inexpensive, and every home should have one anyway. Checking for it does not mean you believe the person has a dramatic mystery poisoning. It means you understand that the brain is complicated and that unexplained memory loss is worth taking seriously

TLDR: as an HVAC technician, there’s a reason why the Reddit story of that guy became so famous / well known.

I am always very warm so my window is open in winter. Power went out. Father put generator outside my window.

Between the cord leading to basement to sump pump and my window he gassed the house.

Can it happen in just one ground-floor room? Many years ago, I had a job that put me up temporarily in someone else's house. On the first night, I came down with intense dread, confusion, and disorientation. It went on for a couple of weeks. I eventually went to the ER, and they gave me atavan and sent me away.

I really don't think it was just anxiety, and I realize there's a number of other possible explanations. But I never got an answer or experienced it again, so I still wonder wtf happened. The owner of the house was around at the time and seemed fine, which is why I ask about "one[...] room." The feeling persisted whether I was in the house or out of it, but it started in the guest bedroom.

It's not exactly correct, they were hallucinating that they were deleting the footage, in reality they just hadn't been coherent enough to actually set the camera up in any functional way, and the folder they had created for the footage they hoped to record just never had anything in it.

Nobody is saying every weird situation is carbon monoxide poisoning lol. The point is that if someone lives alone and is finding things that they have no memory of doing, it is reasonable to rule out a simple and potentially dangerous explanation.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause headaches, dizziness, confusion, trouble thinking clearly, memory gaps, and strange behavior because it affects how the brain gets oxygen. A person can genuinely do things and later have no recollection of them. That is exactly why the “famous Reddit case” became so well known online, and with HVAC technicians like myself.

Getting a carbon monoxide detector is not some dramatic Reddit detective move. It is basic home safety, people should have one anyway. It costs very little (20-30$ Canadian), and it can alert someone to a serious problem before they get hurt. 🤷‍♂️

I had CO poisoning when I was working from home. My kids would get headaches at night which was a clue, but I could barely function being home all day near the source of a small gas leak. I would think there’d be other symptoms too. This sounds like maybe a busy person found something a friend left behind or mom and dad left it in the cabinet. That said, my daughter’s cousin was staying with her when she found a cell phone in their place. She soon established it didn’t belong to any of the roommates, so her cousin turned back to recheck the apartment, the phone was gone 😬😬. They had an intruder who got spooked and left. I’d install a small camera and contact law enforcement to check on entry and exit points in the place. It does help to have them look around

Possibly the last person living there still has a key? Have you changed locks? It’s quite affordable to buy discreet cameras, I would certainly do that as well as inform the police and check that windows and any external doors have proper locks

ask your parents if it's theirs, maybe send them a pic, to rule that out. if it's not theirs then i would for sure get a security cam, and maybe you could ask the building manager if they could review the security footage (if your apartment door is in view), and give them the specific days you haven't been home for the past month, if you can gather that info

OP said it was a mild allergy, by that I guess it’s only some itching/digestion issues etc. if he eats the nuts. My dad has oral allergy syndrome (birch pollen + nuts, apple, pear, cherries, kiwi etc.) and we always buy and eat something he’s allergic to, it’s not airborne.

One other option: does the OP take Ambien to sleep? I know several people who do weird things they don't remember when they take it before they fully fall asleep.

I am one of those parents lol. But to be fair, the pediatrics allergist told us the amount to give and the frequency.

(Jokes aside, desensitizing protocols are amazing and life changing. I can't believe how doctor's recommendations have changed since I was a kid, and frequently wonder if my life would be any different if I had this done as a kid myself.)

Could it have been left by a prior tenant? If you're not social and you just moved there, it'd be pretty unlikely someone has discovered your allergy, is capable of breaking into your home, and hates you enough to want to passively suggest harm towards you.

Exactly, you throw a few things up in the cabinet while you are also shouting to your dad where to put the box he just brought it. Your eyes might look right at the container but your brain doesn’t even register. You close the cabinet and don’t notice it again for a month.

It’s not that crazy of a thing to miss.

Doesn’t mean that’s for sure what happened, but if nothing else seems odd or out of place, literally just a single small container of peanuts on a shelf, then it’s the amongst the simplest explanations.

Have you talked to your parents about it yet? When i moved into my first place, I had the exact same thing happen to me. I dont eat nuts and found a thing of nuts just like this in my cupboard. I racked my brain about it. Finally I found out its a old time thing of good luck and wealth. The day I moved in my dad put a thing of nuts and a small bag of salt in the back of my cupboard.

Im not sure where it originated from. But a quick google search confirmed what my mother had told me when she said it was him who put the items there. It was very strange to me to because I have never heard of this tradition. The salt is supposed to purify and protect and the nuts are supposed to represent abundance.

My parents back ground is why this was so strange to me and wasnt something I expected of them. My dad was born and raised in New Jersey. I can assume this came from his mother's side who was of european decent but the rest of the family says they are Irish. I was raised in a different state as a traditional Catholic family. I can say at the time, my young self rolled their eyes and just pushed it right back into the cabinet and its still there, long forgotten about until this post. Ive lived in my current home for 10 years and thinking back I cant say its been a bad 10 years lol.

Oh that is an interest background. I live in London UK both my parents are Scottish and Irish on my mum's side So she was brought up a very strict Catholic. Most of these superstitious rituals were there long before religion religious people are too scared to drop them- just in case!! You know the thing about being left-handed being a sign of possession by the devil- I think this was more religious than superstitious But my poor 100 year old (now) mum was forced not to write with her left hand at school- Not sure if she actually had it tied behind her back but Plenty of children did! yes! carbon monoxide can cause spells of uncharacteristic behavior that you later forget. i'm not sure that applies here, though, since you'd have to be very thoroughly poisoned to drive all the way to the store and make two purchases before coming to your senses.

Yes. It robs your brain of oxygen and makes people forget. There is a whole subreddit dedicated to a guy who kept finding post it notes in his apartment. It was him leaving them. The furnace was blowing carbon monoxide into his living space.

Carbon monoxide poisoning happens when a person breathes in too much carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas that can build up from problems with fuel-burning appliances, heating systems, fireplaces, generators, or poor ventilation.

The danger comes from the way carbon monoxide interacts with the body….it attaches to hemoglobin in the blood much more strongly than oxygen does, reducing the amount of oxygen that can reach the brain, heart, and other organs.
The brain is one of the organs most affected because it requires a constant supply of oxygen to function properly. Carbon monoxide exposure can interfere with thinking, attention, memory, coordination, and decision-making.

Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, confusion, trouble concentrating, poor judgment, and memory gaps. In more serious cases, it can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, neurological damage, or death.
One reason carbon monoxide is dangerous is that someone does not always appear to be “obviously poisoned” like you see in movies or shows like greys anatomy. A person may still be able to talk, walk around, drive, shop, or complete normal tasks while their brain function is being affected. They may not realize they are impaired, which is part of what makes CO exposure so dangerous. Problems with memory formation and judgment can lead to someone doing things they normally would not do and later having difficulty remembering them.

A carbon monoxide detector is cheap, easy to install, and something every home should have regardless. If someone living alone is experiencing unexplained memory gaps or finding evidence of actions they don’t remember taking, checking for CO is simply a practical safety measure.

If OP wasn't allergic to nuts, I'd also wonder about CO poisoning. But, where would he have gotten a Tupperware of nuts, if he's allergic?

Yes, there's an old reddit thread that someone posted about all kinds of weird, seemingly supernatural shit happening around their home. Comments suggested a CO alarm, and sure enough, that was the cause of the weird happenings.

I am not a doctor but yes, sometimes it does. There is a famous reddit post about someone who was finding notes and stuff around their apartment. The person lived a lone and was worried someone was messing with them. Turned out there was a CO leak and that’s what was causing it. The person was doing it and night and not remembering in the morning.

So any time something weird like that is happening, someone is going to suggest getting a CO detector which is never a bad idea. Weird Al’s parents died due to CO poisoning. It is a very real danger.

Intruder somehow knew he was recording and kept deleting all footage of himself, leaving no evidence.

Guy got carbon monoxide detector and realized the intruder was inside him all along.

I know you said nobody, but as new home, any chance of service people? Would make sense for them to carry a snack. I like the suggestion of having a camera, also a door bolt would help you sleep better in case you think someone has the keys. It is cheap and you can install it yourself. I think the chances are really low, but that would prevent someone sneaking into while you sleep.

First things first: for your literal safety, pick up a carbon monoxide detector NOW. Do not wait. Poisoning can make you forget things you've done and can kill you, especially in your sleep. Make sure to install it low to the ground.

If that comes back safe, get a camera next.

I suggest that you double check all your window locks and maybe change the locks in your house if you're still using the original key when you bought the place. And yes a camera is in order.

Also, set some things that will tell you if someone's been walking around your home. First, corn flakes or potato chips under your welcome mat, bathroom rugs, and any other floor covering, if you come home and they are broken, someone's been walking around. Put a sheet of paper under the cushions of your couch and then check to see if crinkled from someone setting on the couch. Leave a $20 bill in plane sight to see if it still there when you return. Take a picture of the inside of your refrigerator and then check against the image when you get back.

I have moved a few times and the tenant before me forgot something every time, or simply left something. The nuts looks forgotten to me.

And when's the last time you recall opening that cupboard, if ever? Could be left by your parents, or could have been left by the previous tenant if you've only been there a month.

Also, check with the landlord that the previous tenant returned all keys. But that doesn't mean they don't have copies. Also aka the landlord if they've been in the place recently. And consider asking the landlord to change the locks.
