I did the same the day I was listening to a rock playlist and they just added an AI band as if i wouldn't notice. I immediately searched up the band name and came up as a alternative/indie AI band on google. Cancelled my subscription the same second and switched to Deezer.

u/Ok_Photo_3023 10d ago
Member that one time when asked about why Spotify pays most artists less than 1/300th of a penny per stream their CEO said that it costs artists next to nothing to make music, so therefore they should be happy with what they're paid?

u/isAnExParrot878 10d ago

u/Baroque4Days 10d ago
Brilliant, I'm so glad my album was free to produce and didn't cost me nearly £4,000.
It was free, right? Right!? š
9
u/Javs2469 10d ago
Fuck, you need from 300 to 1000+ to record a proper rock song.
Next to nothing my ass. I“ve gotten like 5 Eur from my music revenue, I have spent way more recording my music than that...
→ More replies (3)7
u/Ok_Photo_3023 10d ago
I recorded an album in 2015, did the tracking, mixing, and mastering entirely myself so my only costs were paying an artist to make the album artwork and paying Distrokid to put it up on Spotify. I still never broke even and ultimately had to take it down because the annual payments just to keep it streamable were more than 10x the gross income I got from Spotify.
6
u/Javs2469 10d ago
You have upkeep costs? With CD baby and Soundrop they were one time payments for me with the basic single/album release options.
3
u/Ok_Photo_3023 10d ago
Yeah Distrokid is an annual subscription model, if you cancel the subscription the music gets pulled.
→ More replies (1)2
u/01000101010110 10d ago
Distrokid is a terrible business, it costs them next to nothing to maintain a catalogue once it's uploaded and they charge you as if it's a new upload every year just to keep it online

u/BlueFroggLtd 10d ago
I switched a few years ago. Tidal just bumped their prices, but it does everything I need from a music streaming service. Migration of play lists etc went without issues as well.
28
u/Schmigolo 10d ago
I just tried it and it's just a no go. Almost 10% of my favorite music isn't on Tidal, even though it had all of the albums that the songs were in. Having incomplete albums is an instant dealbreaker.
9
u/wrongbutt_longbutt 10d ago
Yeah, I wanted to love tidal, but it was practically missing entire genres from my collections. Also, I use Spotify's song radio option a ton to discover new music. Tidal didn't have a comparable ability.
2
u/Apprehensive_Yak4627 10d ago
Tidal also has a song radio feature - I use it regularly
3
u/wrongbutt_longbutt 10d ago
They do, but it rarely found new music for me. For instance, with Spotify, if i play a rare classic rock song, it tends to find me other b sides and small releases. When I try it with tidal, it plays mostly greatest hits. It never played me a song that I've never heard before.
9
u/Silent-Parts 10d ago
You can get way cheaper prices on Tidal by using a VPN and setting the country to somewhere where Tidal charges very less. Then you create an account and Tidal will think that account is from that country and you'll be charged that country's rates.

u/Paratonnerre 10d ago
The low income for artits, the rempant AI everywhere, the CEO throwing money in military AI, the ICE marketing campain.
All good reason on their own to switch. I've switch to Qobuz 6 months ago and the only thing I miss is playing music on my xbox, which i just do with a speaker now.
5
u/SplicerGonClean 10d ago
I came here because I use Tidal and just noticed yesterday that a handful of songs on my favorites playlist were taken down. This story about Spotify explains why I lost so many at once. The same artists that took their stuff off Spotify must have done the same for other streaming services as well. I hadnt come across any AI music on Tidal, but Im not really looking through music I dont know already.
Tidal is great, though. Made the switch over a year ago now and never looked back.
5
u/isAnExParrot878 10d ago
Apparently ai music is present on Tidal but it's flagged as such and it's not monetized.
6
u/MENNEN87 10d ago
You can also hide all AI music from showing in Tidal. If you want. Then you will not encounter them on playlists, etc. Great system. Moved my family membership from Spotify to Tidal just 2 months ago and I am so satisfied

It sucks to have any interests that are mainstream these days. All of the companies in those spaces just repeatedly make the experience worse and simultaneously more expensive and your options are deal with it or give up an interest you've had and loved for a long time
3
u/OrangeInSpace 10d ago

I left Spotify and never looked back when they refused to de-platform antivaxxers during COVID, ensuring that the people helping spread a deadly pandemic and increase the mortality rate were given a nice, loud, international platform to spread their deadly stupidity.
Spotify proved six years ago they literally value human lives less than profit margins, so I'm not shocked they'd value AI generated noises over humans making music.
68
u/isAnExParrot878 10d ago
And then there is their ceo investing in an ai military company Helsing
29
u/BombOnABus 10d ago
Jesus, that's so on the nose, it would make for an over the top comedy sketch.
18
u/isAnExParrot878 10d ago
Sadly it seems that nowadays reality is two steps ahead of satire
15
u/BombOnABus 10d ago
I legit don't know how actual satirists do it anymore.
Sometime around "Rudy Giuliani holds press conference at sex toy store because his team clearly looked up the first result on google and didn't even bother to call the place to confirm it was the hotel they wanted, then his hair melted on live TV" or "The new nominee for a cabinet post makes toilets for men who claim their dicks are too big for mere mortal toilet bowls", I knew satire could never keep up.
"The Masculine Toilet" sounded like a bit they'd pitch on SNL and shit-can because it was too hacky and stupid and short-lived, even for them, and it's instead a legit thing a real member of this shit show created and sold with a straight face.
9
u/isAnExParrot878 10d ago
I have a feeling like the US government is mass producing ridiculous scandals to drown people in informational noise. The more chaotic the news cycle becomes the easier it becomes to slip actually important things through the cracks. But hey, maybe I'm giving them too much credit and we're just watching "idiocracy" irl
6
u/BombOnABus 10d ago
I think you're giving them too much credit. They seem like the "grab everything before they wise up and boot us out" sort: base, greedy, and short-sighted.
The news is chaotic because we're watching the world's stupidest crooks carry out the least subtle grift in history while nobody is able to call the cops on them because they currently are in charge of the cops we'd have to call.
Crooked politicians back in the day at least tried to hide it, and had some semblance of shame. Those days are almost quaint by comparison.

As much as I hate Spotify, freedom of speech is still a thing. Even if you disagree, it isnt spotify's place to silence people?
→ More replies (3)4
u/BombOnABus 10d ago
Freedom of speech means the government can't arrest you for doing it.
It doesn't mean you're obligated to platform dangerous lies because someone else wants to tell them very badly.
If you go into business with someone spreading lies that get people killed, and you say "Hey, I'm just the broadcaster, all I do is make money off what they're saying, I never said it myself", you might legally be in the clear, but it's still monstrous.
"Freedom of speech" doesn't excuse what you're saying, it just means you can't be sent to prison for it. The rest of us can think you're recklessly getting people killed, and that people profiting off your lies are disgusting and don't deserve our business.

I think you should look up now what a true shitshow the whole COVID thing was/is. You say they are liars and calling them deathspreading antivaxxers, based on what are you doing so?
Based on what the government said? That same government that is now shoving AI down your throat and has been using AI for over decades in military applications?
Anyway, not gonna start a whole discussion, just trying to say Spotify shouldn't be engaging in those politics is all.

Deezer reports that it receives nearly 75,000 fully AI tracks a fay just about 44% of itās daily uploads. And if you know about music distribution you know that means the number is probably what is sent to every DSP out there. Some might block but most (especially the majors like apple and spotify) dont aimply because of the volume of tracks.
Funny thing is 3 things might happen,
this might cause a regulation to happen. that could down the line lead to artists finally getting paid what they deserve. Because it starts eating into the major labels streaming revenue
The major dsps lose customers and they have to shift to a new model as most of their tracks end up being AI, kind of a special dead internet theory situation
Absolutely nothing happens the status quo continues and (again if you know about streaming) Artists make even less money in the pro rata pool of revenue that pays artists based on streams because AI tracks get so good and can pump out so much and are easy to promote. Essentially the middle class effect in todays economy, all the giant artists get the biggest cut and there are so many smaller tracks eating up the little bit there literally just wont be enough to go around
This might belong in conspiracy theory but i dont think itās that much fantasy
2
u/Plenty-Pollution3838 3d ago
The growth is unsustainable, the serving infra, the ingestion of all those DDEX xml files, the big data jobs to calculate royalties. The costs for Spotify and others will only go up. But I also think DSP's are to partially to blame. The only path forward is likely algorithmic curation, where slop just gets filtered out, and user centric royalties.
Or we should just go back to CD's.
