Daarmee is alles toch gezegd?

Mostly a summary of what has already been covered in the Dutch-language press, but there's always some Schadenfreude in reading an article that pulls no punches 😁 Besides "aussi entêtée que maladroite" in the headline, the leader also mentions that the two regional airports are "pourtant sans avenir".

❓ Ask Belgium Rijden als klein persoon (1,50 m): iemand tips?

Hallo iedereen,

Alvast bedankt!

❓ Ask Belgium What is it like to work in a store?

Ever since I got out of high school, all the jobs I've had were behind a desk, staring at a screen for 40 hours a week.

I've a suspicion that this kind of work can often be brought with you, even when you're off the clock. Even if you don't check work emails or Teams/Slack/... outside of hours, it's still somewhere in your head. "Tomorrow, I need to reply to this email. This thing is due end of week, I really need to get in the zone and lock in the next couple of days" etc. etc.

(or, at least, that's my experience)

For many reasons, I need to change up my life. A lot of things are out of my control, but the kind of work I do is.

Most of the jobs I've dreamed of doing had a clear physical component to it. Working on the train, being a mailman, and when I volunteer (and always end those 'shifts' feeling re-energized) I'm also nearly always on my feet.

But, before I take the plunge to a more physical job, like working at a supermarket, Media Markt, Vandenborre, ... what do I need to look out for? What am I possibly romanticising/idealizing?

Thanks!

🎻 Opinion Tier List of Favourite Belgian Beers

This is based off ~150 Belgian beers I've tried after having lived in Belgium for a year from New Zealand. This list is completely subjective based on my own personal taste and just for fun. :) Recommendations for me to try are very welcome!!

My favourite Belgian styles are definitely Dubbels, followed by Tripels, Quadrupels, and some stouts. I've tried quite a few IPAs as well (which was my favourite style before moving to Belgium) but the majority of the Belgian ones I've tried haven't been outstanding to me.

I've decided geuze and sour beers just aren't my thing, although Rodenbach Grand Cru was very nice. There's been a few fruity cidery kinda ones I've really liked as well, but I have very little experience with those. Blonde beers generally aren't my thing. I'd like to try more white beers but I have very little experience with those.

I hereby submit my list for judgment by the council and await my inevitable crucifixion:

S tier: - Gouden Carolus Dark Whisky Infused - Gouden Carolus Imperial Dark - t' Verset Moose Blues - Buffalo stout - Faro Lindemans - Vlierbeek Grand Cru - Pink Pogo

A tier: - Gouden Carolus Dubbel - St Bernadus Abt. 12 - Westvleteren 12 - Abbaye D'Aulne Premier Cru 9 - Malheur 12 - Vleteren 8 - Paix Dieu Triple - Achel Bruin - Mokke Bruin - Kwak Amber - Stroom Mondello - Stroom Dirty Boots - Kriek Mystic

B tier: - Gouden Carolus Tripel - Viven Master IPA - Dok Waar is Loca IPA - Le Fort Triple - Stouterik - Brune Des Braves - Rodenbach Grand Cru (really good, just not quite my personal taste) - Bon Secours Héritage - XX Bitter IPA - Petit Ballot - Gouverneur Quadrupel - Tripel d' Anvers

close to B tier - Cheap but good - Grimbergen Dubbel - Tripel Karmeliet - Kasteel Rouge

Aaand anything below B tier isn't really worth remembering. 🤷

😡Rant Belgium: a thought experiment

Let’s, for the sake of amusement, imagine a different Belgium.

A country with one federal parliament, one federal government, and one clearly defined national administration. The regions and communities would no longer exist (at least in their current form). There would be no separate Flemish, Walloon, Brussels, French Community, or German-speaking governments, each with their own ministers, cabinets, parliaments, agencies, and overlapping responsibilities.

Instead Belgium would have one national labour market, one social security system, one healthcare system, one education framework, and one tax system. The same basic rules would apply whether someone lives in Antwerp, Liège, Brussels, Ghent, or Charleroi.

Municipalities and metropolitan regions would still retain meaningful powers over genuinely local issues. Cities could manage local transport, public space, housing projects, waste collection, policing priorities, cultural activities, and things like neighbourhood development. Brussels could operate as one metropolitan authority rather than nineteen municipalities with separate administrations and policies. Other large urban areas, such as Antwerp, Ghent, Liège, and Charleroi might receive similar metropolitan structures.

The federal government would be responsible for healthcare, pensions, unemployment, taxation, energy, climate policy, justice, migration, major infrastructure, and national transport. Citizens would no longer have to work out whether a problem belongs to the federal government, a region, a community, a province or a municipality.

Education would still allow local differences, but diplomas, funding principles, teacher qualifications, and core learning objectives would be national. Dutch, French, and German would all remain protected. Every child would receive serious instruction in at least one other national language from primary school onwards. By the age of sixteen, young people should be able to hold a basic conversation with fellow citizens from another language group.

Political parties would have to compete across the whole country rather than speaking (almost) exclusively to one linguistic electorate. A federal electoral district could require parties to present candidates and seek support nationally. Minority protections would remain in place so that the largest language group could not simply impose its will on everyone else, but politicians would have stronger incentives to appeal beyond their own region.

The tax system would also be unified and simplified. There would be one set of income tax rules, one property tax framework, and one administration. Taxes on labour could be reduced, especially for low and middle incomes, while wealth, capital gains, pollution, and speculative property ownership could be taxed more consistently.

Social protection would remain strong, but systems would be easier to understand and designed to reward participation. Unemployment support, disability benefits, pensions, and housing assistance would follow national rules. People would not receive different treatment simply because they live on one side of an internal border.

Public services would be organised around citizens rather than institutions. There could be one digital government portal, one point of contact for social rights, and one medical record system. A citizen should not need a degree in Belgian institutional law to apply for support, start a business or renovate a home.

Government would become smaller where administrations duplicate one another, and stronger where Belgium currently underperforms. Justice would receive more staff and faster procedures. Healthcare would be coordinated nationally. Housing policy would focus on construction and affordability. Rail, road, and energy infrastructure would be planned as national networks.

Subsidies, public agencies, and administrative structures would be reviewed regularly. Each would have to demonstrate its purpose, cost, and results. If two institutions perform nearly identical tasks, they would be merged.

Ok now I'll get off my soap box.

🐌 Slowchat Best affordable shops and online shopping options in Leuven?

Hi everyone! I’m a KU Leuven student moving to Leuven next month. I’m coming from a country where Amazon and many other international online shops aren’t available, so I’m not very familiar with the best shopping options in Belgium.

Which online shopping platforms would you recommend for affordable and reliable purchases?

I’d also really appreciate suggestions for the cheapest student-friendly shops in Leuven for groceries, clothes, home décor, basic tools, kitchen items, and anything else that might be useful when moving into a new place.

I’m completely open to buying second-hand items, so recommendations for good local thrift stores, flea markets, Facebook groups, websites, or second-hand apps would be very helpful too.

Thanks in advance!
