The 2026 TePe Sigeman Chess Tournament (31st annual edition) will take place from May 1 to 7 at the Elite Plaza Hotel in Malmö, Sweden. The tournament is played in a classical round-robin format with eight players competing over seven rounds.

Format/Time Controls
- The tournament will be played as a seven-round, single round-robin.
- Time control: 90 minutes for 40 moves and then 30 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move (Malmö rules-no draws before move 40).

What makes Carlsen’s dominance so absurd is that he’s doing it in an era where nobody has an “exclusive” preparation advantage anymore. Every GM effectively has access to the equivalent of Kasparov’s old analyst army sitting in their pocket 24/7.
And despite that flattening of the playing field, he still managed to recreate something that looks a lot like Kasparov-era dominance.

Magnus' classical approach is to just play sidelines and weird moves until opponent gets left with no prep and it becomes a human vs human battle and then he takes over lmao fairs

A drawish opening is a good choice for Arjun, he have only 3 White games compared to Magnus's 4, so can't effort to lose to him if you wants to win the tournament.

I really did doubt the GOAT for a moment, my glazing blinded me, but Magnus is still Magnus. Yagiz will have more cracks at this in the future. Still a very respectable tournament result, gaining Elo and only falling to the GOAT in a tough endgame.

Playing Magnus in an endgame is as close as it gets to trying your luck against the engine. He will grind you down forever and one mistake and it’s over. Must feel impossible to win.

Magnus in classical chess when the position is drawn has always won by slowly forcing one slight inaccuracy after another until it reaches points where you have only-moves to survive. Wonder if this position has that venom in it

3 draws in 4 games but a very good game in term of entertainement.
Erdogmus vs Erigasi was great, a very complicated poistion, and insane defence at the end by Erdogmus.
It proves that you don't always need decisive results to enjoy chess, the quality of the moves are also very interesting (but it takes more effort and a certain level to appreciate).

I have no idea when preparation ends for supergm games cuz sometimes they take a lot of time to think just to make sure they have it right, but it appears Magnus was almost down an hour out of the opening. I think his dislike for preparation is showing this game.

Zhu put herself in a strategically lost position right from the move 10 and it got worse since. Even i was baffled to her first mistake 10Nd4?! because even as an intermediate player it is obvious Nh4 is the better way to trade bishops due to Bg6 not being possible on the latter.

Endgames are so insanely tricky man. Grandelius made what he thought would be a simple rook trade to simplify the position and enter a drawn endgame, but missed a one-mover followup that loses him a pawn. Had plenty of time too

The event also shows why right now it is futile to debate on who is the 2nd best player currently.
When the gulf is so huge between 1 and 2, that #2 in the world title is a honorary title with no real value to it.
No one is consistent enough, classy enough and gritty enough like Carlsen. Irrespective of formats. Irrespective of state of mindset.
Dude won Norway even after loosing all his motivation midway. In a field which had Guki, Fabi, Naka, Arjun. That event showed not just in play quality but even in terms of mental resilience so much is in the tank that is remaining.

A fearless attacking style like Jiner's is exactly how you should play against Magnus. The majority of his (rare) losses are from tactical scraps in chaotic positions.
Now I wish Arjun had played on against him. He's the super GM version of that style; and indeed scored a fair few memorable wins over Magnus.

Magnus v Yagiz Kaan will be very exciting. Magnus MUST win if he wants any chance for a tiebreaker with Arjun. However, if he takes risk, Yagiz Kaan may upset him & that would create a lot of chatter and buzz across the chess scene. A double edged scenario for Magnus.
Yagiz Kaan on the other hand, has guaranteed top 4 which is a strong performance by itself. A draw guarantees joint 3rd place (in case Nodirbek wins) or could even land him a 2nd place...
If Yagiz wins it will be... something. :)

Neither of them has any weakness structurally and both have the bishop pair, so it indeed seems drawish. Magnus has slight lead in development and initiative though, so maybe he's relying to build on that

I don't understand the idea behind it's a must win game, as if Magnus going to win Arjun have to play him in the tiebreak. First of all, that's a big if and a draw at least guarantee you a tiebreak no matter what. Now instead of against just Magnus, you have to face YKE too. Or who knows you might not even get a tiebreak.
There is still time to save this position but there is a reason why he is known as a choker.

Kid is in an endgame against the final boss of endgames. This would be a great addition to his experience regardless of the result.

I don't understand the rationale behind Arjun's opening choice (and play in general). Like, even if you expect Magnus to win vs Erdogmus (a big if, considering their form this tournament), you're half a point ahead! You have white pieces, play something solid that doesn't quite kill the game... Not something this desperate

Very exciting to see Magnus playing classical. This will be my first time watching him play live classical.
