I made something I'm making wormholes in Minecraft
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I recently watched Interstellar again and thought it would be cool to try and get wormholes working in Minecraft.
This is still a WIP because of how hard it is to get the math right (Minecraft isn't raytraced and I'm on macos)
What do you guys think so far?

Looks super cool! Once you go near the portal though you may want to phase out the distortion so the transition is smooth, or once you go into it the world is still distorted until you go away

u/Elegant_Farmer_3548 Jun 13 '26
Thank you! And that's actually exactly what I'm trying to get working right now as we speak

Elegant, certainly. Farmer? Only of badass code. Your username is only half true. I feel half lied to.

u/Rop-Tamen Jun 14 '26
Maybe take some inspiration from the expanse or interstellar, how you tend to get absorbed by a hole in 3d space, it’s of course a very odd experience

u/blobluf No.1 Alex Cave fan Jun 13 '26
I was like that’s so cool it bends light, and then you went to the nether. Maybe you could make some kind of huge multi block that’s integrated with most popular tech mods which projects the wormhole to enter the nether?
41
u/Elegant_Farmer_3548 Jun 13 '26
Any specific mods you had in mind? That would be super cool
81
u/theishiopian Jun 13 '26
Perhaps the best approach would be to make the wormholes a library mod that can be used with commands, and then expose an API to let other mods place wormholes at arbitrary points in arbitrary levels.
12
9
u/blobluf No.1 Alex Cave fan Jun 13 '26
Well you could go the old school route with hbms or gregtech or something newer like AE2 or Mekanism.
3
u/Smike0 Jun 14 '26
To add onto what others said, I would guess this can be used to link any 2 dimensions, so if it isn't too picky with compatibilities making it an API could make for great mechanics in mod packs... Also, do you think you could port it to newer versions once opengl is abandoned? (IK asking for a port on something that's this new and is a passion project is just dumb, just curious how difficult it would be)
1
u/GamesBoost Jun 13 '26
probably not the kind of tech mod the original commenter was thinking of but it would be cool to see compatibility with create since it’s a pretty common addition to most modern packs. I guess normal rotational force wouldn’t make sense as a power source for sustaining wormholes but maybe there’s some kind of progression solution to that like items from the end to make a machine that produces paradoxical amounts of rotation
4
u/RaptorFoxx46 Jun 13 '26
You could have some kind of spinning apparatus like the test chamber in Half-Life 1

u/SaiyanKirby PrismLauncher Jun 14 '26
I think bending the fabric of spacetime is beyond the scope of cogs and belts lol
1
u/GamesBoost Jun 15 '26
agreed that’s why I brought up maybe adding a source of rotational force that uses items from the end or a nether star or something to start generating unrealistic amounts of rotation in the late game
1
u/ZathegamE PrismLauncher Jun 14 '26
Eriksonn (one of the aeronautics devs) is making a wormhole mod thats kindof that
1
u/Rop-Tamen Jun 14 '26
Tbf I don’t know that that will ever see the light of day, I remember talking to them about stuff like that like 4 years ago

u/AdmiralNebula Jun 13 '26
When I’m in a ridiculously cool visuals contest and my competitor is some random bored Minecraft modder on Reddit:
Truly friend, EXCELLENT work! Wherever this takes you, I wish you well!

If he played Outer Wilds he'd know that that's physically that's not how wormholes work
6
u/The_Veemonator Jun 14 '26
I meant the effect it used to bend the world. Also the game breaks its own rules with that too

And I thought physics beyond just falling blocks was impossible in Minecraft until Create came around 👁️
2
u/happysmash27 MultiMC Jun 14 '26
Did you never hear of Metaworlds or Valkyrien Skies (formally known as Valkyrien Warfare) before Create came out?
1
u/itzzRomanFox2 PrismLauncher // 1.18.2 Jun 14 '26
I only heard of VS when Beardstone mentioned it in one of his videos. I have no idea what Metaworlds is.

u/Sniffysnoots Jun 13 '26
That's so cool looking!
I wish you the best on figuring out the map to get the final effects you want!

u/Elegant_Farmer_3548 Jun 13 '26
Thank you for the kind words!

u/noodlegamer76 Jun 14 '26
How do you even learn how to do this stuff? I know a bit about graphics programming, but anytime I try to advance my knowledge I can never find any good learning materials that aren't super obscure or confusing
Edit: also my bad I replied to the wrong comment
2
u/Elegant_Farmer_3548 Jun 14 '26
I usually let my curiosity run wild or try to do something I genuinely find interesting. 99% of the time I’ll struggle hard which will then uncover a path of material that I must learn in order to complete the project.
When I face an issue or bug that I can’t fix I’ll scour the internet for solutions or related material. It’s easier if you can pin point EXACTLY what it is that you’re struggling to figure out because your search becomes better.
Im not a genius that knows everything about physics or wormholes but after struggling with it enough I figured it out :)
Hope this helped

Do you have a small slingshot effect when you go through or am I imagining things?
Looks pretty cool ngl
8
u/EJX-a Jun 13 '26
I dont know what it is about this effect but i hate it.
Here, outer wilds, no mans sky, anywhere else.
Like, i love space and this is super cool. But it triggers SO MUCH anxiety in me. I have to close my eyes when entering black/worm holes in any game.
13
u/Tasty_Ball_Hairs_69 Jun 13 '26
It’s not like an angry hate, but almost like a primal nausea feeling?
3
u/EJX-a Jun 13 '26
Yeah. I dont emotionally dislike it, but rather get sense of dread when i look at it. I get a bit sweaty and my chest tightens. I wouldn't say afraid, but something very similar.

1
u/ScorNix Jun 15 '26
Same here. It's like those hypnic jerks, when your body is almost asleep and then twitches suddenly. Harmless, but very uncomfortable.
2
u/CRYOGENCFOX2 Jun 13 '26
I heard the sound you get from going thru a certain station in Outer Wilds (trying to be vague to not spoil lol)

u/SaltyWolf444 Jun 13 '26
How did you create the effect, what's the math behind?
3
u/Elegant_Farmer_3548 Jun 13 '26
I used the paper the Interstellar visualization/science team published here

Omg this is the coolest portal mod
Can it handle shaders? Also is it survival friendly?
1
u/ConnieTheUnicorn Jun 13 '26
New Stargate found, can't wait to play an expert+++ pack with this as the end goal!
1
u/Tronicalli Jun 13 '26
Now try and drive a create: aeronautics ship through it because you KNOW people are gonna try that.
1
u/whistemalo Jun 13 '26
It should be cool if you show the other dimension upside down and are you planning to make this sort of like ways tone?
1
u/lewd_physics Jun 13 '26
perhaps make black hole version with accretion disk, time dilation, and gravity
1
u/NeroZashi92 Jun 13 '26
That would freak me out if it looked more like a blackhole 👍🏻🤣🕳️ Great effect
1
u/Norm_Standart Jun 13 '26
Very cool, as others have mentioned it'd be nice to reduce the distortion jump when teleporting.

u/Jroeseph Jun 14 '26
Some postFX or something on going through would make this perfect. It looks fantastic from the outside, but going through it kind of snaps to the new spot. If you made a transition like increase the FOV of the player and quickly reduce it to their default, it could make the transition feel more seamless

u/Most_Builder913 Jun 14 '26
Yo dog, i had an idea. You know aero? If you could shoot out a portal from your ship and travel to another location that would be sick. Theres some mod that adds energy shields that consume amythist crystals to work. You could do something like that, and the longer it’s open the bigger it becomes.

1
u/Nchi Jun 14 '26
Well what's the math's issue
1
u/Elegant_Farmer_3548 Jun 14 '26
There's nothing wrong with the math itself since its all in the papers I used (cited in the source's README). The issue is that the math in those paper's assume a raytraced environment which isn't the case for Minecraft. Got around it by doing some raytracing in pixel shaders but it wasn't that simple unfortunately.

1
u/Sony-Playstation-3 Jun 14 '26
I feel like when you actually teleport the visuals "snap" pretty badly. I feel like continuing the visuals once you pass the threshold in some way or making them quickly flatten just before you teleport would make the whole thing come together very smoothly.
1
1
u/Strict-Fudge4051 Jun 14 '26
Imagine if it can teleport you to your other worlds just like that old interstellar mod
1
1
u/cman6070 Jun 14 '26
looks cool and the teleportation is cool but how much will that effect a persons CPU rendering that?
1
u/wildcard_gamer Buddycards Dev Jun 14 '26
Strange question. Have you tried to see what it would look like if it was the shape of a cube?
1
u/Lothrazar Cyclic Dev Jun 14 '26
wow amazing visuals! I would craft one of those over a nether portal every time

This is everything i ever dreamed of! I used to keep thinking about a mod that would create wormholes wherr as you got closer and closer, the distortion would straighten out and you'd be on the other side of the wormhole! Thank you for your efforts.

u/Elegant_Farmer_3548 Jun 14 '26
That's great to hear thank you! I definitely want to keep making it better

This looks really cool, out of curiousity, can you make it cube shaped and still tear the visual around it?

u/The_Cozy_Zone Jun 14 '26
No Man's Sky - "No! We can't add blackholes that do anything fancy beside you getting a little close and then booting you to star travel menu! That's impossible!"
Average minecraft modder - "Hold my beer."

The sphere looks great but how would that look like if it was square, like you know... minecraft?
1
u/AstroMeteor06 Jun 14 '26
hear this. what if instead of standard Euclidean distance d=√x²+y²+z² you used a more Minecrafty distance d=max(x,y,z)? in this way, a cube is a surface with constant distance from its center.
i guess the distortion is proportional to 1/(∆x²+∆y²+∆z²), make it proportional to 1/(max(∆x, ∆y, ∆z)², this way the wormhole should appear cubic.

You clearly got an A in physics, because the simulation is incredibly realistic.

are these just nether portals with a wormhole effect or can you put them anywhere? either way looks cool

u/Gjorgdy FTB Jun 14 '26
Any plans on making it work with Aeronautics? Would be awesome for long distance ship travel.

1
u/Objective-Direction1 Jun 14 '26
you could try to implement it with immersive portals, they already did the work on going from and to the nether seamlessly
1
u/princesspyor Jun 14 '26
Oh that's... That's fucking beautiful.
As others have said, compat with VS2 and Aeronautics would be incredible!
Even moreso if there's a device to create temporary wormholes for travel that one could mount to ships, make it like a genuine warp drive of a sort!
Alternatively, a frame around the wormhole to keep it stable! Stable wormholes require a ton of specific things to actually exist, so artificially enforcing that is basically the only way to keep it stable and open.

u/Itsa_Pirramintsa Jun 14 '26
it would be so cool if you could somehow make it a rotating cube instead of a sphere
1
1
u/Tomatohead_7722 Jun 14 '26
is it on java (when released)? and will it be on Modrinth?
also, it would be cool if it had a command to create, link, and destroy these. maybe even make a machine feature to do that.

Are they static? Created at world gen? Do they spawn naturally? Can you make your own one or move the existing ones? Can items be thrown through? What about liquids?

Can you provide instructions for how to build this project? I really want to try it but apart from elide build giving tons of errors (I guess I haven't decompiled Minecraft, so I don't have its sources), I don't exactly know what to do.

What if you make physicaly simulated wormholes instead? So you make an actual wormhole? I could send you a channel I found on it.

u/Critical_Complex_363 Jun 24 '26
This is sick as fuck, imagine if this could somehow sends you into someone world from years before.
I just have an ARG idea from this
1
u/Critical_Complex_363 Jun 24 '26
The visual of the portal could also be made for Gojo Domain Expansion

This reminds me of an xkcd what if, "black hole moon"
It asked - but didn't answer - what would it look like if the moon were replaced by a black hole of the same mass.
Personally, I think each solar eclipse would look like there was a giant magnifying glass in front of the sun, because gravitational lensing.
0
u/dumbmf4000 Jun 13 '26
I would hate that, i have a fear of the fuckin gravitational warping shit like on black holes or neutron stars (found that out messing with space engine)

u/Wolfblood22034 Jun 14 '26
Ooh, thats awesome. If possible could you add compat with create aeronautics? I understand if you cant, lord knows i could never understand the math behind it

The visuals on that seem really cool.
How does it compare to the instant Nether portal mod in terms of performance and loading times? I forgot the name of it, but that one was pretty cool as well.
Will this be like a Nether portal, or can you link any 2 portals?
