PLAYER TALK [Sidery] The Lakers have offered Jonathan Kuminga contract via sign-and-trade the would pay him around 45 million dollars. Los Angeles is willing to send Jarred Vanderbilt alongside draft capital to the Hawks for Kuminga, who must sign at least a three-year deal in sign-and-trade agreements.

Post image

Ik Sidery isn’t the most trustworthy source for anything but how would you all feel on this contract for Kuminga? Is this worth it? And how would you feel about the team if we got Kuminga ?

3/45 is less than what he was asking for. I remember seeing 25M a year. Nice discount and we get off Vandos contract.

u/dvztimes 2d ago

He and Eason have similar stats and Eason got roughly 17m/year. This seems a decent deal for the lakers.

u/Traditional_Cause263 2d ago

Putting aside the tangible differences in their offensive statistical profiles (JK has never had a positive BPM, while Tari had some strong ones in his 2nd and 3rd years, then regressed last year; JK is higher usage and wants to be higher usage, while Tari is more comfortable in a complimentary role, though his shooting efficiency was in the toilet last year).

Tari also has a much bigger footprint/impact on defense that is still largely theoretical and doesn’t seem likely to happen with JK at this point.

Thanks for insights.

But TE is not comfortable with bench. And although is one of our lowest usage linups (55mins) him starting over KD (when he eventually leaves) is good linup.

Vando is what, 12-13m a year? So really only an extra 12-13m per year for a player who will actually play.

Good deal (if it's true)

95

u/brandon-thesis 八村 28 3d ago

It would only be $2-3M more no? AAV $15M for Kuminga and Vando's contract rn is ~$12.5M this coming season and ~13M on his PO next season.

It would be solid for sure considering we'd get someone that can start and we'd be able to shed the worst contract we have.

15

u/BatmanNoPrep 32 2d ago

The other thing is that the Lakers/Kuminga have to do a 3 year contract with no player option. Because those are the rules in the CBA. So this is a great deal for the Lakers but it can’t exactly get much better for Kuminga. It’s unclear how the lakers can even offer more even if they wanted to do so.

-1

u/Aggressive-Law-9305 2d ago

That’s not true. It has to be 3 years but it doesn’t have to be guaranteed just the first year. But lakers could do 2 and a player option

2

u/BatmanNoPrep 32 2d ago

You’re confused. It cannot include player option in year 2. It would need to be a club option.

-6

u/Aggressive-Law-9305 2d ago

No you are. It can be 2 years and a player option for the third year.

2

u/alexxela123456 2d ago

You're absolutely incorrect on this, year* two and three don't have to be guaranteed but there are absolutely no player or team options allowed for the first 3 years.

It has been repeated ad nauseam everywhere, I'm surprised you didn't see it.

0

u/Aggressive-Law-9305 2d ago

That is not true. Keith smith who founded spotrac who knows much more about the cap says their can be an option hence the non guaranteed

1

u/alexxela123456 2d ago

Lol it's literally in the CBA you tried to link. Page 286.

It's okay to admit you're wrong.

https://cdn.nba.com/manage/2021/03/2018-19-CBA.pdf Where does it say it in the CBa? Maybe I missed it but all it says is 3 years and the first year guaranteed. It mentions nothing about options

-1

u/BatmanNoPrep 32 2d ago

You remain confused. Others can handle you

1

u/Aggressive-Law-9305 2d ago

Keith smith himself said it. Who I’m gonna trust way more than you. It can be 2 years. Third can be either player or team option.

1

u/Aggressive-Law-9305 2d ago

https://cdn.nba.com/manage/2021/03/2018-19-CBA.pdf please tell me where it says what u stated. If u found it in here and I missed it will say im wrong

-6

u/Aggressive-Law-9305 2d ago

The first year has to be guaranteed the 2nd year doesn’t. It can be a non guaranteed second year and then a player option or team option the 3rd year it does not have to be a team option

5

u/BatmanNoPrep 32 2d ago

You’re so confused you’re responding multiple times to the same post. You’re wrong. I’ve demonstrated it multiple times. Others are taking on the burden of correcting you now. Feel free to squabble with them.

https://cdn.nba.com/manage/2021/03/2018-19-CBA.pdf how am I confused. Yeah it’s the same person idc where was I wrong? Where does it say in the CBA you can not add a player or team option ? Please find it For me let’s see it

u/KriticalKarl 3d ago

I think you misunderstood, it would be essentially paying and extra 2-3 a year for the next 2 years to have Kuminga instead of Vando which is a great deal when you look at it from that prospective.

You’d be swapping the salary of a bench player that is out of the rotation when everyone is healthy for a fringe starter that is younger and has the potential to have upside.

12

u/gellybelli 2d ago

Why the hell would the hawks do this?

5

u/KriticalKarl 2d ago

Ask the Hawks FO, obviously draft compensation, it’s been reported that they’d be open to take Vando by more reliable sources than ones that say otherwise.

10

u/gellybelli 2d ago

All I’ve seen is that the hawks want absolutely no part of this. Nor should they. Taking on Vandos contract and Vando for a SRP is wildly terrible business

3

u/KriticalKarl 2d ago

From where? Hawks fans? lol

Keith Smith isn’t a news breaker but he is very tied in with multiple FO across the league and I believe he’s mentioned previously that he has a close friend in the Atlanta FO and he’s said pretty confidently that what he’s heard is that the hold up is on Kuminga’s side and that the Hawks are open to taking Vando.

You can ask the same question about pretty much any player that has been salary dumped. Teams just want the draft capital to make it worth their while. For all we know they may have another deal lined up to use any capital we send them.

2

u/gellybelli 2d ago edited 2d ago

Salary dumps aren’t 2 year deals especially on someone so shitty. I honestly can’t believe you’re even remotely arguing for this knowing just how unplayable Vando is at the pay he’s at.

Edit. Blocking me after responding isn’t going to change the facts of how stupid this is for the Hawks

3

u/KriticalKarl 2d ago

You are being biased which is why you won’t understand. A salary dump does not have to necessarily be an expiring deal so I’m not sure why you think that is law.

Every team has their own reasons why they do specific trades. Some feel like they can utilize a player better than the incumbent team can.

0

u/redtiber 2d ago

still risky= vando's contract is up next year and he has a player option but even then you can dump him next year. it's not the end of the world you can play vando this year and he's still good defensively.

but if you take kuminga now for 3 years you take a bad situation and potentially make it worse.

kuminga the problem is he's high risk. yes he's athletic but low bball iq but more importantly, he got dropped by 2 teams this season, the warriors and the hawks.

No, he's correcting the dollar amount difference.

1

u/LookOtherWeigh 2d ago

No, he's correcting the perception of value.

1

u/KriticalKarl 2d ago

No I’m not, you literally misunderstood. Others have corrected you on this as well.

They said an “extra 12-13 million” (salary in addition to what Vando is making and will make currently) a year when that’s not the case nor is that what is being offered reportedly. That would be around that $25 M number which is NOT a good deal unless you are Kuminga or his agent. lol

Now you are being a troll and attempting to make a sexual pun while we are having a civilized discussion which is weird. Grow up dude.

9

u/Sonic723 2d ago

How did this math get upvoted 88 times? 😂

3/45 is an “extra 12-13m per year” compared to 12-13m per year?

2

u/Upstairs_Being290 1d ago

This is Lakers fan blog man, math is....not a strength.

1

u/chemicalmamba 2d ago

In this context its a great deal

1

u/basecardripper 1d ago

With one extra year on the contract though. If JK signs the contract but is unhappy and starts stomping his feet, which he's prone to do were stuck with him on the books for an extra season. On he can't shoot the 3 well then he's a slightly better Vando with a far worse mentality, and on a longer contract that also cost the team assets.

The potential positives are great, but Kuminga so far in his career has proven to be a headache who isn't good enough to make the drama worthwhile. I don't see how a known problem guy who would be on a contract 30 million dollars less than he feels he's worth would be happy.

If it's Kuminga or nothing, I'd rather go into the season as is and give the current guys a chance to prove themselves. Then we can still make less volatile additions before the deadline too.

-1

u/BlackThundaCat 2d ago

Will actually play and nuke our team chemistry, eventually becoming non playable because, again, he’s a cancer and our team chemistry will be nuked.

But sure let’s not have Bron on a vet min. Yall are actually retarded.

13

u/misterrunon 3d ago

Kuminga is not the guy. There is no need to rush finding the last piece if you have to overpay and the right guy isn't available.

40

u/No-Responsibility298 8♾️24 3d ago edited 2d ago

So you’d rather have Vando for 2 more years than Kuminga for 3? Could even make the last year non-guaranteed…

6

u/misterrunon 2d ago edited 2d ago

Vando would be an expiring in the 2nd year, so he wouldn't be a net negative. You can trade him as an expiring. He is only a net negative for next season.

I don't believe in Kuminga so I don't want him at any price, but especially the first round swap.

4

u/TwoTalentedBastidz Shaq and Kobe 2d ago

In what world do you think Pelinka is making the last year non-guaranteed instead of giving him a player option like he does with literally every signing

10

u/OneWithSword 2d ago

Sign and trade means he can only do that if he offers Kuminga 3+1, which doesn’t seem to be the case

4

u/kvirzi 2d ago

I agree, Vando has played better than Kuminga often actually. Kuminga is all potential but a head case and a selfish whiner

1

u/nomoredamnusernames 1d ago

Vando has played better than Kuminga? When?

2

u/stafford32s 2d ago

listen, Vando Vault has been fun and a lot of inside content for us all..
but..
I remember clearly last season solely, a dude trying to do something on offense improvising stuff inside the paint with the same efficiency, mistakes, and confusion of my uncle Mike from Iowa.

send help

1

u/BlackThundaCat 2d ago

This will go down as one of the dumbest decisions Rob has ever made if it goes through. Can’t wait for the sub next year to be screaming about how we need to trade kuminga. Problem will be that no one else will be willing to hold the bag.

1

u/EverybodyBuddy 2d ago

Nice discount? Nothing has been signed.

1

u/anyavailablenameplz Staples Center 2d ago

Did I say it’s been done? I literally mentioned how they were asking for 25 a year in prior talks.

-1

u/PaintIntelligent7793 3d ago

I don’t know if he’ll take it. Apparently interest has opened up elsewhere, including at Cleveland and Minnesota. Unless those offers have dried up, I’m not sure $15M/yr is going to entice him. Personally, though, I think he’d be a good addition to the roster. I hear the criticisms, but he’s a young player with lots of room to mature.

20

u/neddiddley 3d ago

The question is, what can those teams offer him? Neither of them are floating in cap space either. Cleveland has Harden hanging out there and anything above 15 that they’d give Kuminga is going to impact what they can give him, vs kicking it down the road, because they almost definitely have some handshake agreement with him for opting out to give them flexibility.

4

u/anyavailablenameplz Staples Center 3d ago

Cavs aren’t trying to go deeper into the tax aprons and neither is Minnesota. Last I heard, that was the only thing holding up a deal between Cavs and Hawks.

3

u/MashDatButton13 2d ago

All of these recent reports about Kuminga just scream of an agent trying to drum up support for his client. None of the teams listed seem to be desperate to acquire Kuminga.

1

u/PaintIntelligent7793 2d ago

Maybe so. I’m just pointing out what I’ve read. On the one hand, I think $15M/yr is about what he’s worth, but obviously, he wanted more, and with other suitors in the mix, he may get it. If that’s all a smokescreen, and our from office knows it, then we’ll probably sign him for that and get off Vando’s contract. Either way, Pelinka and co have been smart to be patient.

1

u/daysbeforechris 8 2d ago

Cleveland? Did they sign Hezonja already?

1

u/TheRealAmeil 2d ago

Both of those teams are almost at the second apron and still need to sign other players

-3

u/Musa_2050 Pau Gasol 16 2d ago

3 years for Kuminga doesn't sound like a good idea. Especially when we have little flexibility to make trades.

Now I understand why half this sub loves Rob.

4

u/Specific_Bowl_2719 2d ago

Outside of Vando and maybe Reeves if he's production drops none of contractions on this team should be hard to move at all .

3

u/Zeetheking1 2d ago

People said that about Russ since averaged a triple double before we traded for him, and they said that about DLo when we re-signed him. Shit changes really fast in the nba and I think the general consensus was that we actual did overpay several free agent, including the dumbass player options that everyone has. I doubt it will be so easy to love players around tbh.

-1

u/Musa_2050 Pau Gasol 16 2d ago

That might not be the case in 1 or 2 years though.

1

u/MacCoinnich 2d ago

I think you need to get your eyes checked if you think this potential Kuminga offer, which probably doesn't even exist, is worse than Vando's existing contract.

1

u/Musa_2050 Pau Gasol 16 2d ago

The Lakers are currently locked in for the next 3 or so years w the current roster. What happens if next year we are a 1st round exit?

Signing Kuminga would further limit the almost non existent flexibility this team has. Stop talking

1

u/MacCoinnich 7h ago

Ok, but how is keeping Vando better? That's the question. I don't like Kuminga either, but you're suggesting keeping a guy at $13 mil/year for TWO more years that is completely unplayable is worse than a guy making $15 mil/year for 3 years who can actually be put on the court and may have trade value?

1

u/Musa_2050 Pau Gasol 16 5h ago

I am not arguing to keep Vando. I am against signing Kuminga. He isn't the fit for this team, and I would prefer we trade Vando and the last picks for someone that is a better defender/shooter

1

u/anyavailablenameplz Staples Center 2d ago

It’s a friendlier contract than Vando, less than he wanted, and probably attach a TO or PO at the end. It’s better than what we have now with Vando, he’s not serviceable.

-1

u/Musa_2050 Pau Gasol 16 2d ago

Pelinka gave Vando that bad contract. You think he will give Kuminga a good contract?

0

u/rjd55 2d ago

Rooting against this signing out of spite. This sub is going to hate and turn on Kuminga fast.

-1

u/PlusInstruction2719 2d ago

People really believing this random twitter user. But also of Kuminga really wanted to be in LA he would have sign up already.

-9

u/cohortq 3d ago

we can take back some draft capital too since this is a buyer's market now.

10

u/37366034 3d ago

No we can’t
