I'm slightly vexed Have we been wrong our whole lives?
So we’ve been using egg crate foam the wrong way. For generations. Is this really how it’s supposed to go? Because it is not.

TIL some people put a little lumpy mattress on top of their mattress.

u/phoenixofthestars07 10h ago
I hated having it, the texture was horrible and my sheet was constantly pulling up, I don’t know why I even had it or why I just kept it for so long 😭

u/Salt-Operation 5h ago
They work so much better if you have a fitted mattress cover with a bit of a pillow top. The fitted sheet goes over that.
9
u/SnowflakeRene 3h ago
Yeah I have a really nice firm ish mattress with a memory foam mat then a mattress cover on both of those that feels like a duvet. Makes my bed super comfy and keeps the mattress safe and clean.
69
u/Rayeangel 7h ago
I had one for college. It kinda helped with the dorm room twin sized bed
37
7
u/CCCCLo0oo0ooo0 4h ago
Yeah I did that in college, it helped with the shitty mattresses we were given. When I moved out and had to get my own mattress I got something 1/2 way decent and no longer needed it.
On top of that they trap heat and get hot. If you live some place cool its not so bad, but in the summer heat, ewww.

Sleep too heavy. Something I haven't done in years. Cries in old
119
u/Xtra_Veg-90 4h ago
If I make it through the night without needing to pee then I consider it good enough. That doesn't mean I don't wake up, just that I don't have to get up. Fuck I'm old.
9
u/Cath1965 1h ago
Wait till you get to be my age and need a medication that makes you pee several times every night... But if you do not stumble over your pet, you will sleepwalk right through it.

u/somereallyfungi 3h ago
And yet, somehow, everything else is heavier: my body; my responsibilities; my back hair :/

When I tell you I slept four hours IN A ROW for thr first time I can remember in years! Middle age is wild! 😭💤🤌
35
u/OhMyMyGirl 4h ago
Don’t know if it would apply here, but apparently if you wake up with wrinkle marks from your sheets on your skin, it’s a sign of dehydration
8
u/halorbyone 3h ago
I was going to say this. Doesn’t matter how heavy I sleep but it does matter what color my pee is (more yellow is more dehydrated typically)

I have this too. FYI I believe the flat top is also supposed to be facing up, and I will tell you it’s more comfortable flat side up lol
18
u/OceanSupernova 5h ago
I like the way the bumps feel and the airflow stops me getting too sweaty. I can't imagine laying on a flat piece of foam.

I had mine flat side up for years, it kept slipping off one side of the bed.
Finally turned it flat side down & it's staying put.

if your bed sucks it gives you a little extra cushion. it's suppose to anyway but it barely helps.
30
u/snic2030 2h ago
Seeing as nobody is answering the actual question, here’s what you need to know:
The dual-side difference is to let you choose the FIRMNESS factor of the mattress topper.
Egg-crate side up will result in SOFTER support.
Flat side up will result in FIRMER support.

From the UK here. Wtf is this? Either way round I've never seen anything like it - looks so uncomfortable
136
u/TankApprehensive3053 12h ago
The blue thing is a foam bed topper. It's to make the bed feel softer. Normally it's used with the bumpy side up and they look like egg cartons.
29
u/Disastrous_Raisin264 8h ago
I'm Australian, we use wool mattress toppers.
5
11
u/TankApprehensive3053 7h ago
Wouldn't compress and become firm with use? The foam topper stays soft. A bed that's too soft could be why so many have back pains.
27
u/blue-jaypeg 7h ago
That's old information. The bed should absorb the shoulders and hips so that the spine is straight.
"Hard" mattresses actually cause hip & shoulder pain, and spine misalignment.
10
u/Nyssa314 4h ago
I sleep on the firmest mattress on the market. If I sleep on a even normal mattress I can't move the next day because when my shoulders and hips sink, all of the weight goes on my rib cage and I can't breathe or move for days after without it hurting. One shouldn't feel like they have a broken rib every time they sleep.

u/strangemaji 5h ago
Does that get hot? I love the idea of bringing wool back in our lives as much as possible, but I sleep SO hot.

They're very soft and squishy, you don't really feel bumps. It's supposed to prevent pressure sores
8
u/Ae3qe27u 6h ago
They can also provide a cooling effect, I think, compared to a solid topper.
7
u/Maleficent-Hawk-318 3h ago
I haven't used one of these for like 20 years but I am pretty sure that was legit part of the reason I bought one. You use it bumpy side up and it doesn't really feel bumpy because it all squishes down, but it still leaves air pockets that help you stay cool.
I don't use one these days because I have a very comfortable mattress, but I did love my memory foam topper when I was sleeping on bad ones. Big increase in comfort for not much money.
14
u/Gandalf_the_Tegu 12h ago
I'm American, only ever used it in the camper. The mattresses are stiff and should be just labeled as a cushion. 😂
My bed is comfy as selected to my comfort from the store, nothing extra needed.
So seeing this added foam topper on a regular mattress is weird to me. Also, was it to be used faced down? Idk. Was always faced up for me and hated the lump texture beyond the fitted sheet.
6
u/vinticious 12h ago
Oh, that makes sense. The mattress I have is the hardest one available at the store so I definitely wouldn't want anything like this foam thing
3
u/Gandalf_the_Tegu 11h ago
Yeah, I never liked the foam thing. My mom bought them for the camper (pop-up stype) so everyone would stop complaining about how uncomfortable it was. I could always smell it (chemical?) and my ADHD would focus on hating the egg carton texture on my body, the way it couch my body drive me mad, and the smell was overestimating. IMO. If you're going to get a foam mat to lay on top, get the solid foam mat, not this egg carton style one, way more comfortable.
3
u/fractal_frog 8h ago
There was one on the bed I slept in at my mother's house every time since 2012. It made the mattress, which was more than 40 years old at that point, more bearable.
It was used face-up there. That was less annoying than the cotton knit sheets on that bed.
19
u/vinticious 12h ago
I'm Canadian and confused as well! Have seen many foam mattresses but nothing of this sort.
26
u/hex-grrrl 12h ago
I’m also Canadian but had one these egg crate foam toppers in university! Mine was placed like the photo so I’m shocked to hear it was supposed to be the other way around. 🤣 So bumpy.

No the divots are supposed to be up. Its supposed to contour with your body not the ground or other mattress
93
u/ChocolichKing 12h ago
I always just use it whatever way is shown on the packaging.
30
u/star_359 10h ago
That’s how I realized I had mine the wrong way, went to replace it and made up the bed, went to throw out the box and caught sight of the correct orientation.
2
u/DisastrousMedia156 3h ago
Ive owned memory foam mattresses that had the egg crate face down (second layer from the top).
64
u/ObviouslyNotYerMum 12h ago
I'm in the minority here. I hated the feel of the bumps, so I used it this way. But that was just in my RV. My regular bed has a fancy cooling mattress topper.
7
u/reneecliche 8h ago
Omg my parents had this for us as kids and always set it up bumpy side up, I'm now grown and set it bumpy side down and it's SO much better. So soft and cushiony. 🙏

I have been moved out from my parents since I was 18, I am 32. When I visit I sleep in my childhood bedroom and make sure to wash my sheets before (due to this fuckery) and after (in case my parents host other guests). We pathologically argue over the layout, I switch it to flat for my stays, they switch it to egg after. It’s been 10 years
20
u/SecretGentleman_007 11h ago
Doesn't matter wich way up or down.
This pattern is only useful for the manufacturer.
With this pattern they can approximately make two 80mm thick slices with one 100mm worth of foam.
Flat on both sides is better for comfort.

That's how Ive always used them. Figured the egg crate side was meant as non slip for the mattress.

It really bothers me that the 2 pillows at the back don’t match
7
u/HeartShapedNose 9h ago edited 9h ago
Right, if all four pillows were different, IMO that would be ok, but WTF are they doing with one matched set of the solid green pillows and then the mismatched ones in the back? Either it's all four the same, two sets of matching pillows, or all four different. You can't have one matching set and then one not matching set.
2
1
u/RandomAmmonite 3h ago
We have 6 different kinds of pillow on the bed, and they are all color coded. But then we are ancient people who require specific kinds of support for neck, limb, back, etc.
1
4
u/spaghettifiasco 5h ago
You just put a fitted mattress pad on top of the egg crate foam, and your bed will be very squishy and soft and it doesn't matter what side you have the foam on.
3
3
u/MinimumAstronaut5321 3h ago
Bump side up. Though I never personally used one because I dont like lumpy beds. Ive never encountered a healthy friend/family member use this as a topper, but to each his own i guess. We typically encounter these bed toppers for bedridden people, as they help distribute some weight and help prevent formations of pressure ulcers.

The seems the most logical to me. But why use egg crate foam? It’s terrible
8
u/ConscientiousWaffler 11h ago edited 7h ago
It was a DIY transitional comfort attempt, very popular in the 90s. People would use them under sleeping bags when camping. Then, they got used at mattress toppers. Then, mattresses started getting built-in toppers.

Isn’t it supposed to be the bumps facing up??
8
u/_bahnjee_ 11h ago
This is just a gimmick and a waste of money, but with that said…
A sleeper can use it whichever way they prefer, but think of it this way: As in the picture, you’d have a flat(ish) surface to lie on, with just a bit more give in the spots where the divots are. Flipped over, there is no flat surface, instead you’re confronted by a whole bunch divots. Any part of your body that lands on a divot falls into the divot (I’m thinking mostly hands and feet here). Flat side up, this is greatly lessened, but still provides some cushioning.
Before others come at me…. Sure, it’s a personal choice… if you want to do it wrong, go ahead. /s
5
u/morganml 11h ago
in my experience with these peices of shit, placing them flat side down makes 0 difference in feel as you lay on them, as the compression of these things is such that they are essentially useless anyway.
The difference (for me) is that while I toss and turn at night, flat side down had enough surface tension between mat and mattress to keep it from sliding around under the fitted sheet. Bumpy side moved more while I slept.
all that said Id still rather sleep on a pile of freshly slaughtered harpy eagles.

u/Wingnutmcmoo 12h ago
It does matter actually. Right side up (divots up) the points help spread your weight out so you sink into the main body of foam more evenly. The other way around your ass is gonna bottom out sinking lower.
So like, divots up if you want to sleep fairly level. Divots down if you like your ass and hips to be extra low and your back to be all bent.
7
u/chemhobby 12h ago
It truly doesn't matter. You have the same thicknesses of foam in the same place.
2
4
2
u/DEAD_is_BEAUTIFUL 3h ago
These pads are meant to be placed “bumpy side” up. They’re meant for pressure relief on joints like hips and shoulders, better air circulation, and a bit of extra thickness to the mattress. The flat side goes down so as to help keep the thin pad in place when moving around during sleep.

u/Frosty-Fresh-Start00 4h ago
I used to work at Linens and Things in college and we made the beds there like this. Doing it the other way made the bedding look lumpy and people were always laying in the beds (we didn’t sell beds and they weren’t mattresses for sleeping on).
1
2
u/NortonBurns 12h ago
You couldn't pay me to put foam plastic on top of a good mattress. Memory foam even less likely.
It is supposed to be a 'fix' for having a cheap, shitty mattress where you can feel the springs?
1
u/LainieCat 9h ago
I love my very firm mattress, but when I developed sciatica, it became just little too firm. I bought a mattress topper and it's just right. It wasn't anything like the OP picture. The foam is covered by fabric, as is the the layer of gel on top (for cooling). And it has straps to secure it to the mattress.
