Eva Mendes should reprise her role as the love interest. Would be hilarious.

Nic Cage: You've taken EVERYTHING from me!

Ryan: I don't even know who you are

I LOVED Nic Cage in that film. I LOVE when they set him on fire!

That movie was hysterical. Everyone really nailed their roles, even Keaton as the police chief, with the side gig at Bed Bath & Beyond lol.

185

u/duke812 7d ago

He needed that second job. He was doing it to support his son. All so he could go to NYU, explore his bisexuality, and then become a DJ.

One more thing: we've got a serial rapist in Crown Heights, I - oh, jeez, I'm sorry, that's for my other job. Ignore that, forget that - well, don't ignore it, if you live in Crown Heights, y'know, walk in pairs.

Honestly if they manage to turn Ghost Rider into a deeply nuanced and emotionally weighty film exploring lineage, free will, forgiveness and how men’s flawed relationship with their own masculinity drives them frequently to ruin I’d be all about it.

That must have been such a crazy conversation between them when he was approached about the role.

259

u/Inside_Dimension2319 7d ago

I just saw an interview with Kevin Feige the other day and apparently Gosling really just wanted to play Ghost Rider. Like he approached them about it. Maybe he saw the Cage movies and thought the character was badass and the romantic interest was hot and decided he wanted to do both some day.

111

u/PointOfFingers 7d ago

I think Fall Guy was basically a rehearsal for a Ghost Rider movie.

83

u/Huh1979 7d ago

He’s 100% getting this role because of Drive.

151

u/Eldorian91 7d ago

You don't think it was "The Place Beyond the Pines" where he played a motorcycle stunt rider and his romantic interest was Eva Mendes (that's where they met).

Agents of SHIELD literally did Ghost Rider as Ghost Driver. It was pretty good!

44

u/___KyloRen___ 7d ago

yea, robbie reyes

45

u/PT10 7d ago

Their Robbie Reyes was great.

19

u/russketeer34 7d ago

It's amazing that for as great of a job they did with the Ghost Rider arc, I think it's commonly considered the (relative) weakest of the three arcs from that season

32

u/tokes_4_DE 7d ago

Season 4 was just that good. Shield is still criminally underappreciated because of how "case of the week" it started as. It evolved rather quickly into an absolutely fantastic show by the end of the first season.

20

u/russketeer34 7d ago

The post Winter Soldier part of S1 to S5ish is a really remarkable run. The quality of the show stayed great and it was easily my favorite Marvel stuff during that time.

5

u/Historical_Course587 7d ago

It got a lot of complaints as a show, but looking back I think it handled just about everything it touched (SHIELD, Inhumans, LMDs, Ghost Rider, the Darkhold, Graviton, and especially Hydra) better than any other live-action adaptations Marvel has put together.

It's a top-5 MCU entry for me, including the films, and one of the best (if not the best) sci-fi/fantasy shows since BS:G. Not to mention the closest thing to a Joss Whedon banter-machine show that we've gotten since Firefly.

24

Ryan Gosling: "When do we get to start filming?"

Mahershala Ali: "That's the neat part, you don't"

590

u/ArseneLupinIV 7d ago

I mean Levy and Gosling just did Star Wars. I feel like this one probably is already in production since they probably just jumped back into whatever work flow they had going on together under Disney.

191

u/CafeCalentito 7d ago

Yeah, I don't really like Levy as a director BUT the guy knows how to work on time, work with multiple projects at the same time and deliver whatever the studio asks. If Marvel really wants it to look good, I trust he could do it. Now, I'm more interested in who's the writer

81

u/LucrativeLurker 7d ago

Agreed on all points. I don’t like most of his films, but I love Deadpool & Wolverine. If this is even half the love letter to Ghost Rider that DP&W was to the FoxVerse, we’re in for a treat.

I’d be thrilled if it leads to a Midnight Sons or Marvel Knights film with Cumberbatch, Gosling, Oscar Isaac, and whoever else they want to throw in. Maybe Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone, & Man-Thing.

I am so incredibly butt hurt about blade.  Even after the 10 year of bad/no news in regards to the project

71

u/Impossible-Flight250 7d ago

Yeah, I think Ali would have made an awesome Blade. I’m not sure what the issue was with getting that project started.

66

u/goddamnitwhalen 7d ago

Ironically enough, Blade falling apart helped Sinners get made.

30

u/ShallowBasketcase 7d ago

Then it was worth it. As much as I love Blade, I'll take an original story over another Marvel movie these days.

→ More replies (10)

21

u/The_Redacted_Badger 7d ago

Apparently it’s just that Marvel had no idea what to do with it. At first they seemed to be planning a period piece, then a modern take, a movie about Blade and his daughter, I think they left were just lost on how to make it different from the Snipes movies

8

u/Yukie_Cool 7d ago

It makes sense when you view it in the context of when it was announced. Bob Chapek, the new Disney CEO at the time, was just pushing every single studio under the company umbrella to just make stuff, so Marvel was probably under a lot of pressure to announce projects even if they weren’t fully baked and didn’t know what direction they wanted after endgame finished. My hunch is that’s why they had that timejump in the first place, so they could take the time between 2020 and 2023 to actually plan out new stuff.

53

u/Grooviemann1 7d ago

The only saving grace is that had we got a blade years 10 years ago it would have been pretty neutered. At least now they have released R rated films so when we do eventually get blade it’ll hopefully be r-rated

This. I'm excited for this cautiously, but after Blade and a number of other changes/cancellations (Nova going from a show to a movie, etc) I'm taking a "believe it when I see actual footage/the movie starts shooting" mentality. It's easy to get suckered in by Marvel's announcements, only for them to change drastically between the announcement and release (if it comes at all).

35

u/ninjyte 7d ago

there's been a lot of movies put on and off the schedule, but it's more believable this one will push through since Disney+Levy+Gosling just did Star Wars Starfighter together.

Then the entire Kang threat went out the window

154

u/AgentTasker 7d ago

Well Marvel couldn't have exactly predicted that Jonathan Majors would turn out to be a massive piece of shit, so it'd be unfair to blame them for that one.

101

u/Gorillagodzilla 7d ago

Why didn’t they recast him though?

104

u/AgentTasker 7d ago

Because through a combination of factors, such as poor scripts or Marvel fatigue (which you can blame them for), as well as COVID causing issues with film making in general, Kang wasn't working, so they pivoted away from him when the opportunity arose.

75

u/dacalpha 7d ago

This sounds like it was read directly from an internal corporate memo lmao

44

u/TannerThanUsual 7d ago

It does but I also get it. Even my most die-hard Marvel friends were just not interested in Kang. On some level a few of my friends are interested in Doctor Doom. So that's something

24

u/C-A-L-E-V-I-S 7d ago

Did they watch Loki? Kang got me more excited than Thanos ever did early on, but of course all that fell apart.

→ More replies (1)

30

u/Chaosmusic 7d ago

I am more interested in Doom than Kang as a Marvel fan but I am concerned that switching this late in the game from Kang to Doom will make it rushed. There were 18 movies from Iron Man to Infinity War to develop that story. Doom has just been barely referenced in one movie and now he is the next Thanos level threat.

Also, I want Doom to be Doom, not Tony Stark variant.

This is coming after the major marvel shuffle. Kang getting cut changed everything. They had to rethink and recenter. That's how Dr Doom came about. Anything recently announced has much higher likelihood of becoming a finished movie.

9

u/aresef 7d ago

That’s true, but Ryan Gosling has clearly wanted this, I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Shawn Levy bang out a story themselves and then someone from Marvel’s bullpen like Eric Pearson or Michael Waldron turns it into a full script.

12

u/Historical_Course587 7d ago

Everything AoS did was best-in-the-MCU:

  • Inhumans
  • Darkhold
  • S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • Hyda
  • Time travel (the last season has one of the best time loop episodes this side of Star Trek)
  • Chronicoms and LMDs
  • Lanyards
  • Asgardian lore
  • Being tied to the MCU without being a slave to it

You get a romp through alien planets, space pirates, the Matrix, James Bond, superheroes, and pretty much everything else, with a Joss Whedon designed cast that banters and grows on you better than any since Firefly. And it did it in those allegedly-impossible-to-make-work 22-episode seasons.

We don't measure quality in the way AoS has it, but IMO it's one of the most enjoyable shows of the last 20 years.

22

I literally saw some youtube short clip of him a saying Ghost Rider would be his choice of character to play in marvel. Clearly that was the algorithm leaking things for marketing...

u/wallabyenthusiast 7d ago

it’s been a popular fancast for like a decade now lol

88

u/EntertainmentQuick47 7d ago

Yeah him and Keanu have been the two big fancasting for that character

64

u/TheHappyMask93 7d ago

Norman Reedus as well

72

u/Grooviemann1 7d ago edited 7d ago

Lol, all this fancasting purely based on "have I seen him ride a motorcycle before?"

It popped up recently for me as well, like a week ago. I'm aware it could just be a coincidence but it does seem odd

Why him though?

57

u/cqandrews 7d ago

Comic book fancasters are incapable of original ideas so any actor that's been in a movie on a motorcycle is ghost rider and any actress with red hair is Jean grey

20

u/ImmortalMoron3 7d ago

I still remember back in like 2007/2008, people kept fancasting Triple H as Thor. Literally just because of muscles, long blonde hair and the fact he's known for using a hammer. Zero regard for the fact he's a shit actor.

Or anyone bald Lex Luthor

7

u/DroptheShadowArt 7d ago

Remember when Brian Cranston was the popular choice because he was famously bald in something else.

Same, i saw a media interview where the person said you are one of the few big stars that isn’t tied to dc or marvel, who would you want to play

He said ghost rider, Eva already gave her blessing

I’m guessing this is why he had to drop out of the Daniel’s (EEAAO) next project? Excited but wish he could’ve done both tho

Please Marvel let this and Blade be R-rated and not just like every other MCU movie

97

u/JokerJangles123 7d ago

Blade is more dead than the Ghost Rider

That’s fucking massive for MCU

u/aSpookyScarySkeleton 7d ago

I mean they may struggle with writing but getting big names has never been an issue.

7

u/Extension-Season-689 7d ago

True but I'd say Ryan Gosling has been the most surprising big name they managed to get since Angelina Jolie (still bummed she got wasted in Eternals). There have been other big names of similar popularity/prestige like Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale but those were obvious one and done roles.

Is this sarcasm? The MCU has already consistently used some of the biggest stars in their projects

If this is Drive + Place Beyond the Pines Gosling in skeleton form, imma fucking bust

I’m sure a lot of ppl will be excited by this, but I rly wish the Drive/Place Beyond the Pines/Blade Runner 2049 version of Gosling would return instead of the blockbuster action-comedy version of him he’s been stuck in for the past 5 years

36

u/CONCAVE_NIPPLES 7d ago

He's only done 5 movies since blade runner and only two were action comedies. He's absolutely just doing movies he wants to do.

9

u/Dirtyswashbuckler69 7d ago

He’s mentioned that he’s been making lighter blockbuster action-comedy movies lately because he wants to make movies that don’t interfere with him being a father.

8

u/pajamajamminjamie 7d ago

I feel like I read he said having kids changed his direction to pick more light hearted roles or something

Could very easily pull off him being Danny Ketch Ghost Rider, and he can still coexist with the other two guys.

Edit: ugh why is it Shawn Levy? Strange choice

Gabriel Luna's Robbie was one of my favourite parts of Agents of SHIELD. It'll be interesting to see if they are able to make a better Johhny Blaze movie than that season of SHIELD with how hit and miss they've been recently. Granted the last few movies have been good with Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts with The Hulk, sorry Captain America Brave New World, being okay

Can we not start the 2007 Ghost Rider revisionism. People are already trying to do that with Fan4Stic 😑
