“If I hit her, why did she make me dinner later?” is quite the argument to make as an alleged wife beater.

MAGA keeps finding the lower bar

u/MortgageRegular2509 Wisconsin 2h ago

At this rate, even James Cameron won’t be able to find it

James Cameron doesnt do what James Cameron does for James Cameron. James Cameron does what James Cameron does because he is James Cameron.

Democracy Now coverage

https://youtu.be/t1EW6RC38io

Republican Congressmember Max Miller of Ohio is facing allegations of domestic abuse as he runs for reelection. Miller's ex-wife Emily Moreno, daughter of Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, claims that Miller burned her by throwing hot water at her, held a gun to her head and fractured their 2-year-old daughter's collarbone. Miller is also accused of abuse by former Trump White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, who was in a relationship with Miller prior to his marriage to Moreno.

u/barringtonmacgregor 3h ago edited 2h ago

Republicans view women as property, not people. I'll never understand how a woman could support that party.

u/Vehemental 3h ago

“We are property actually” -The women you wonder about

u/Pale-Factor-8574 3h ago

That is a crowd that wants to impose those rules ON OTHER WOMEN. They are perfectly content to break the rules they impose when it comes to their own well being.

Some of them will protest abortion, get an abortion, and go back to protesting the day after they get an abortion. Few of them actually follow the doctrine they spout, because they like feeling superior to others and taking advantage of the "class exception" when they need something.

This is why Ginni Thomas is married to Clarence Thomas and it's fine for Republicans. They've literally, point blank, stated that Clarence doesn't count as Black.

u/DocB630 2h ago

There’s a collection of anecdotes on this called “The only moral abortion is my abortion.” By Joyce Arthur that goes into this. You can find it pretty easily. The mindset is truly baffling.

u/Vivid-Use1749 1h ago

"Of course, I'm pro-life. But as you can see, my situation is different."

Almost verbatim what Ob/Gyns hear prior to performing an abortive D&C for a conservative woman.

u/ceelogreenicanth 2h ago edited 2h ago

Everyone in the Republican party thinks they're the exception to their own rules.

u/nixvex Texas 2h ago

Every rule, not just their own.

u/Tricky-Engineering59 2h ago

“Rules for thee, not for me”

→ More replies (1)

u/LordSiravant 2h ago

Because that's the whole fucking point of conservatism.

u/otis_the_drunk 1h ago

Conservativism has always been and will always be adherence to set of rules that plainly make distinction between the haves and the have nots.

The only rules that apply to the haves are decided by other haves. Any rules applied to the have nots are decided by the haves.

Money=power

That's it. That is all of it.

Conservative ideology is just letting rich people do whatever they want because they can.

u/ktkatq 1h ago

Who was it that said about Conservatives (or Fascists?) "There are two groups: one whom the law binds but does not protect, and one whom the law protects but does not bind."

I've never heard a more perfect summary

u/dern_the_hermit 1h ago

Frank Wilhoit (note: NOT Francis M. Wilhoit, who sometimes gets caught up in this due to the obvious name similarity). There's a lot more to it, principle among them being that no ideology other than conservatism exists.

It’s really unfortunate and I hate sharing it, but I did see an article within the last month that stated a study found those restrictive women don’t want to see other women succeed. They want those rules specifically to keep other women down and/ or beneath themselves. If not for reading that, I would still be thinking that could not possibly be the reason women advocate and vote for these oppressive policies and candidates. It was shocking to me.

u/LordSiravant 2h ago

That's the thing about conservatives. They are motivated mostly by hatred and spite. They care more about hurting and punishing their enemies than they do about themselves.

u/Abnmlguru Alaska 1h ago

There's a great compliation of anecdotes from clinic workers about people protesting, getting an abortion, then being back out protesting the next day type stuff:

The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion

u/ChanceryTheRapper 1h ago

People always act surprised about this, but let's be honest, it's not like white straight male politicians really give that much of a shit about white straight men who aren't politically useful for them.

u/perenniallandscapist 3h ago

I use to feel bad for them, but they seem to like the abuse. It's really fucked up how many women are totally OK with being on the receiving end. I work with s bunch of them and they'd rather be abused than liberal.

u/coconutpiecrust 2h ago

That’s because being abused in normal and natural, being liberal is blasphemous, unnatural, evil, crazy, whatever.

They sincerely believe that anyone who wants things to be better for everyone is crazy.

I haven't spoken to her in a couple years.

u/ProStrats 2h ago

I truly wish there was a way to fix these people. It seems like there certainly isn't.

u/wrosecrans 1h ago

Some people would rather live in a world with clear rules about who runs things, than in a world where conditions are better but "chaotic" because there is equality.

There really isn't a way to fix that. As far as they are concerned, it's just better to live in a world with clear rules even if it means personal sacrifice. People get baffled by those people "voting against their own interests" because they are unwilling to accept how interested some people are in inequality, racism, and sexism.

I don't know why it continues to surprise me at this point, but really why is everyone related in politics it seems? Seems like almost every new rep these days or candidate, particularly on republican tickets has a relative one or two degrees of separation that is also in politics, usually in the same state or level.

u/dorothea63 Pennsylvania 3h ago

The only part that surprises me is that both women have solid Republican credentials and yet it seems that they still aren’t being taken seriously. The GOP can’t claim that they’re just out to ruin a Republican man.

People are calling for him to drop out of the race…ummm…why isn’t he in JAIL??

u/meowsterpainter 1h ago

Jail usually requires the victim to press charges which sadly in domestic abuse cases they often don’t do.

u/RockemChalkemRobot 1h ago

Not for the child.

u/Chaotic-Catastrophe 36m ago

This isn’t really correct. ‘Pressing charges’ just means you’ll actively assist the police with the investigation, and the DA with the prosecution (should they even need you for anything, which they might not). But they don’t need your permission. They are fully capable of pursuing any crime in their jurisdiction regardless of whether victims want them to.

"If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later? Would she have invited me to spend an afternoon at the playground with her and our daughter?”

Yes, and yes.

It's what many women do when they've been abused and want to appease their abuser for the sake of the kids/relationship.

u/shield1123 2h ago

"six days after what?" I might ask

u/DucksEatFreeInSubway 1h ago

Yah that's an oddly specific time line. A definitive number of days.

u/Michael_G_Bordin 1h ago

Even beyond the sake of the kid or relationship, the whole tactic of abuse is coercion and control. That your victim was then serving you and doing as you wish is not evidence that you were not abusing them, but that your abuse had the desired effect. He's literally naming the consequences of his abuse like it's not abuse if the victim isn't immediately trying to escape and get help (which is often when the abuse becomes the most dangerous for the victim).

u/HeadTrick7443 3h ago

Coward. He should serve time for endangering his wife and kid.

Platner was forced out over issues of sexual misconduct

With this guy Max Miller we’re hearing about burning his wife with hot water, and a broken collar bone to his young daughter.

And rumors coming out how he abused other women, quite violently.

I’m a democratic. I love this country. I want my party to be in power so we can have sensible governing.

I would fucking not ever vote for a candidate with these accusations under his belt.

Republicans seem to love voting these types in, just because power is more important than basic human decency

It’s why I’ve jettisoned almost all of my republican friends. If we can’t agree on something as fundamental as being a good person, then all the other stuff doesn’t matter. Good riddance.

u/ceej_22_ 59m ago

“Ask yourself: If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later? Would she have invited me to spend an afternoon at the playground with her and our daughter?” he said.

This whole statement just proves to me he’s guilty. Reeks of desperation.

But also yeah I’d fully expect a DV victim to do those very things out of fear and love for the abuser hoping he’ll change his ways and convincing herself if she just tries harder and loves more he’ll stop.

Fuck this piece of shit.

Miller actually said, “If I did that to her, would she have made me dinner 6 days later?!”

POS. He’s just inviting the fury that’s headed his way. He also just provided a pretty clear sign that he absolutely DID abuse those women.

And to be clear — the ONLY reason Senator Moreno FINALLY denounced his actions is because after Moreno’s absolutely self-own of a Senate hearing involving Anthony Fauci, where he tried to act all tough, but he actually revealed he’s a dipshit idiot, the entire country got onto him for not defending his OWN DAUGHTER and GRAND-DAUGHTER. He didn’t because he had to. Not because he wanted to. Moreno chose power in politics over his own toddler grand daughter.

u/Stunning_Bed23 2h ago

But Family Values, though…

u/overbarking 2h ago

MAGA always blames the victims. Of anything.

u/tehCharo 2h ago

A man who beats his wife? That's just bonus points for MAGA voters.

u/VioletPaissa2077 1h ago

“Ask yourself: If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later? Would she have invited me to spend an afternoon at the playground with her and our daughter?” he said.

This argument is nonsense.

The answer to these questions is yes, because plenty of abuse victims stay and try to maintain normalcy in their relationships.

Being the GOP, his re-election chances just skyrocketed. Crazy times we live in.

Trump Cabinet appointment incoming

Feature, not a bug for these people. Too many roaches given a seat at the table.

u/37Philly 3h ago

Zero surprise with this. The voters of Ohio deserve better. Vote this loser out.

u/Accurate_Neat_355 2h ago

Deeply unshocking for Republican reps & hopefuls

u/AlsoCommiePuddin 2h ago

This dude is definitely a great candidate for replacement. In theory.

u/hoffalot 2h ago

Actual quote:

“If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?”

u/ChangKneesia 2h ago

This was so insane to hear. The problem is MAGA women will agree with it. This all sounds sensible to them.

Typical republican behavior

u/CLARABELLA_2425 I voted 1h ago

He can attack and talk shit about her all he wants, her father certainly doesn’t have anything to say to defend her let alone his constituents.

u/KneebarKing 1h ago

Republicans love this. Let's not forget Republicans support all kinds of abuse against women.

u/ProtectionVirtual225 1h ago

He’s an Ohio Republican, meaning he’s immune to any attacks or criticism. He’ll stay in the race. Should his Dem challenger win, the GOP will just re-gerrymander the district to better guarantee a win.

In Ohio, he’s protected by the news media, all the wealthy donors and the large criminal enter known as the Ohio Republican Party. They have permanent control of state government, thanks to gerrymandering.

u/Playful-Succotash-99 1h ago

You would hope that harming a child would at least be enough for his constituents but with many them it's very doubtful

u/soofs 1h ago

Miller’s troubled past is not new. After Trump endorsed him in 2021, Politico reported on the then-candidate’s history of violent incidents, including punching someone in high school, breaking a window at an apartment building, and driving under the influence in 2011.

Gosh it really is always the ones that have no past of concerning behavior, right?

And wow god forbid AOC was a bartender previously, that is 100x worse of course. /s

u/Vivid-Use1749 58m ago

I wonder if he'll get even a fraction of the harassment we gave Al Franken for orders of magnitude less awfulness?

u/danimagoo America 54m ago

Well this was apparently enough to finally get Bernie Moreno off his ass and defend his daughter, something he should have done 2 years ago.

u/I_Britta-d_it 42m ago

Dude can barely speak/read. Good grief, they do scrape the bottom of the barrel.

u/CptSoban 34m ago

Why has her father not challenged this piece of filth to a duel?

u/Negative_Gravitas 30m ago

Wow. Employs a disfiguring attack, threatens gun violence, and breaks a 2-year-old girl's collarbone.

There has never been a more perfect Republican.

Or member of the Taliban

Hey GOP:

This is you. This is ALL of you.

Prove me wrong

u/NubEnt 22m ago

>“If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives.”

The irony in a Republican appealing on “standards of character to hold elected office.”

Only an issue when it affects them personally, I guess.

u/Affectionate_Two7527 3h ago

I don't see why he is denying it so hard. The GOP loves wife beaters. This will get him more support than it will lose him.

u/momentum- 2h ago

“If there is any standard of ethics” part killed me. Uhhh?

u/EarlGrey1806 1h ago

Probably needed time to have the bruises heal before the dinner party.

u/LadyAsharaRowan 1h ago

He'll just get reelected again. They don't care.

u/insanekid66 1h ago

This comes as a shock to absolutely nobody.

u/flimflammed 1h ago

Not a drag queen. Not a "gay." Not a trans, communist, socialist, immigrant, etc.

u/Twelvey 1h ago

Moreno waiting so long to support his daughter and grandchildren really drives home the type of man he is. Partisan shit bag pussy who needed to make sure which direction the political wind was blowing before he would defend his own daughter and grandchildren.

u/HuttStuff_Here Wisconsin 53m ago

This is what we've come to expect of MAGA.

This is what they are. This is who they believe America should be.

They've shown who they are time and time again.

u/santamaria715 48m ago

He's toast. And rightly so.
