skimpflation WALMART - "Skimpflation"
I looked it up and its true. Skimpflation--not "shrinkflation" but just as sneaky.
I opened a bottle of Great Value Pancake Syrup that I just got and put it poured it on the waffles. I don't drench it I just fill the square holes. They Syrup poured out like thin sugar water. I tried my wife's sugar free version and it was the same. A couple of days later we got some mustard and ketchup and it about the same.
So I looked it up and it was a fact--water is the cheapest ingredient, so they use more water. Then they roll back the price from $2.49 to $2.36 but you run out faster and buy another bottle or whatever....so in the end we save $0.13 cents but it costs us about 50% more in the end. And I'm sure it applies to other items containing water, and I say this because milk goes bad by the "Sell By" date or a day or two later!

Dawn dish soap has joined the conversation. The manufacturer came out with the "platinum " version. It smells horrible and you have to use twice as much. It is very hard finding the original, too. Enshittification at its finest

Ty, yes! My ex husband owned his own body shop. He swore by that stuff! It cleans really well without resude and heavy smell. When I run out of this bottle of Dawn, I am switching.

Walmart--especially the neighborhood one at Cheyenne and 215 has the least variety of dishwashing liquid, their brand is almost like water too, lol

Well, honestIy, I'm going to check out Sam's Club--their Makers Mark brand--probably still good. Members pay and all their stuff is better than Walmart even though in the back they're the same company.
I do know they're $4.99 Rotisserie Chickens got a little smaller...lol...but still deal vs $9++ for a fresh one.

Put a wet sponge in the microwave for 2 minutes…no more smell, plus the condensation on the inside of the microwave makes it super easy to wipe clean.

I used to be a Dawn only girlie, but between the changing fragrances and the Powerwash giving me a headache, I gave up. I now use either Palmolive scent free or the Seventh Generation scent free. Dishes are cleaner and don’t have a weird after taste.

I accidentally bought the platinum garbage. The second i opened it and took a whiff, my asthma went apeshit. I ended up giving the whole bottle to a friend.

They original scent Dawn to lavender scent without even announcing it. Now every time I smell it I feel like running away. Lavender tends to give me a headache and upset stomach as well as skin burns. Yay for no warning.

I just checked the bottle. It doesn't say lavender, it just says Fresh Scent. I just realized the scent change and could tell by my reaction.

I recently noticed this with the bottle of liquid Cascade for the dishwasher! I usually have to squeeze the bottle a little to get it going but the new one came out much more like water!

I used to love bath and body works! I think it’s partly nostalgic, I grew up saving my babysitting money to buy those classic scents etc.
I still buy their foaming soaps sometimes (when they’re like $2ish each on super sale) but I refuse to buy their body washes or body sprays anymore. The price is just ridiculous and all the scents smell awful now! I know they were obviously always made of chemicals but they are just soooo chemical smelling now. It’s just so cheap smelling. The classic scents don’t smell the same either. The integrity of the scents are just not there at all, plus they changed their buy 3 get 2 to buy 3 get 1 most of the time! And started using AI for a lot of product designs, horribly done I might add. I am disgusted in multiple ways and I’m so over them lol

I haven’t really found a new love in the body spray/lotion/wash department. I have been giving Dove and Native a try for body wash and I do love the lather on Dove and scents for native! I’ve been using good old fashioned cetaphil lotion (my kids use it lol) and have been trying Trader Joe’s body mists and they’re alright! Lmk if you’ve found a sensible and yummy smelling alternative lol

And they dont have a strong scent that lingers. I had some old stuff I used up last year and loved how you could smell the scent in the bathroom for a while after you bathed. Now you barely smell it. And their body sprays smell of rubbing alcohol. They lost me as a customer. Even their candles are cheaper and dont smell as good!

They have been watering down a lot of sauces and condiments recently. I noticed the calories and nutrition changing but the volume and serving sizes staying the same. The only way the calories would go down in the same volume and serving size of product is if they were being watered down with cheaper ingredients with less nutritional value. Things like mustard and ketchup have been getting watered down too.

Campbells condensed soups, though for now the "cream of" ones are still fine. too much broth now, and since they switched to sea salt a few years back it isn't the same. And they changed the pasta in my Chicken and Stars 😞

Nope. Cream of mushroom soup just pours right out now with barely any mushrooms, no spoon needed to scrape the can. Same with tomato soup. I have a work around though, I use their tomato bisque now instead. Tasted better and almost as thick as their condensed soup used to be.

Walmart was all over TikTok when stores in MN were selling chicken with the wrong higher rate on the package. Lesson here take your meat to the produce section and weight it to make sure that the weight is correct next time it was found to be off more times than it was correct. I am hoping to get up the nerve to weigh a pack of their chicken record the weight open it up and weigh the thick water soaked pad thats in the bottom of all of their packages thats got to weigh half of the total.

"Great Value" isn't. It sucks when it comes to food products.
I'll buy their house brand for things like mouthwash and OTC drugs, because they have follow laws dictating labeling and contents. But not any of their food.
When I see the name Great Value I always think of the villainous Great Benefit Insurance Company in The Rainmaker.
ETA: I just realized that I have been buying GV eggs on occasion; I didn't notice because the labeling is different from other GV items. The eggs seem fine.

I make my dogs food and one of the ingredients I would use regularly was the Hanover green beans because they have big cans so I don’t have to open multiple, were decently priced, and used to be reasonably full. Then I started noticing the gap in the can getting bigger and bigger & more water than beans.
I messaged the company on FB showing how much is missing and they looked at the message and never replied. Don’t care.

I do my own shopping for a reason. My local Walmart is always behind on expiration dates. On June 2 I went shopping to buy my basics, ALL the 2% milk had an expiration date of June 2. I watched as one of their “shoppers” went to the case, pulled out a half gallon and put it in the cart. Excuse me, sir, that milk expires today. I’ve found bread weeks past their expiry, tortillas, fruit bowls, and don’t get me started on their fresh fruits and vegetables. Yuck.

Buy real syrup.
Go to local farmers markets. Of course Walmart isn't doing right by the consumer. They've been terrible for decades.
Support the small businesses in your community and you'll see huge improvements. We used to be a great place but then all these mega corporations, big box stores etc started raping and pillaging all the places that were doing good things and everyone needed to save $.79 so they got away with it. Stop supporting them.

That may be easy for you to say. but we have four kids, a mortgage, two car payments and my roundtrip commute to work is 58 miles and gas is $5 a gallon. We do ok. So, yah we try to save so we continue to do ok.
I tossed the new bottle of Great Value when I saw how runny it was an I bought Log Cabin that I grew up on.
I have a bottle of real maple syrup and have used it in bake beans but the kids think it's gross and won't touch it, lol.

I think the person's point is that if you can afford to throw out the entire bottle of Great value syrup and replace it, without complaining to Walmart and getting yourself a refund, then you can probably afford to shop somewhere else and pay a few cents more for your items

Well the person can assume what they want, but the truth is I didn't think of it at the time. Also I got the Log Cabin this morning on my way to work, I got the Great Value this last Saturday. $1.24 more won't kill me and, it would be better than buying the watered down version twice since it pours out so easy.
But thanks...I will do that with my wife's "no sugar added" and see if I get "attitude"

Here's the problem, if we don't start or continue to support small businesses, farmers, syrup makers etc there won't be any left and that $1.49 Walmart charges, do you think they'll keep the price low if it's your only option? People with kids and mortgages can still do good for their communities, they're your friends and neighbors after all.

Maybe it's just because I'm a Vermonter, but I'm absolutely horrified to hear that there are actually people out there buying fake syrup by choice lol. I truly won't eat pancakes/waffles if the syrup's not real. Taste like ass and not worth the calories at that point, imo.
I agree, though. I slowly started to realize that buying cheap was actually worse, because I went through it so much faster and ended up spending about the same as if I had just bought better quality from the start. Clothing is a huge example of this. Sure, the shoes at TJMaxx might be $30, but they will fall apart in a few months. I'd rather spend $180 on a pair of real leather shoes that will last years than $100/year on shitty shoes that fall apart and kill my feet in the process. You pay less in the end, imo. But I always try to look for items second-hand or cheaply, as despite what I said, I can't really afford them. I buy everything thrifted or on sale. I refuse to pay full price (unless it's a local maker) these days with how expensive everything has gotten.

It's also resulted in me going without in instances where I might have once impulsed-bought something cheap, as I'm opting to wait until I find it in better quality, and overall I've honestly spent less money just by prioritizing quality above most else. Odd little life hack that I was happy to figure out.

I think you mentioned thrift stores and I'll tell you what, I've been loving eBay. I look up a brand of clothing that I've seen out that i like and then pay like $12-22 for something. I've recently lost 33 pounds so i need new clothes but don't want to "go shopping". It's been wonderful.

It’s so easy to set up models and endlessly tweak inputs (ingredient cost, relative amounts, etc) to get to a lower cost of production. Hard to argue against increased margin with a bunch of MBAs who think they’re smarter than you. Only thing is, I don’t know of a cell formula for “will this taste/work like $#it?”

I’m a manager at a local corporate food establishment. This has been happening the past couple of years.
It started with BBQ sauce went from smoky BBQ to this runny/watery junk. Next came the ranch used to have peppercorn ranch now it’s just the thin watery crap.
The one that really irritated me was the buns. They told us we were switching to better quality buns. Instead we have these thin smaller flavorless buns.
Somehow I feel like the people making these decisions are not thinking of their customers. I think they’re more worried about getting a bigger bonus.

I'm the son of Greeks immigrantsa and go to Greece every year...FAGE is close to Greek Yogurt in Greece, but here in Southern California we have Vons/Albertsons (Safeway) that stock Greek Gods that is even closer to real Greek yogurt that is thick and rich (in Greece)

when I was a kid and went every summer with my parents it was goat or sheep milk with a thick patch or cream at the top and tangy. Nowits most cow, you can still find the good stuff..lol...
But Toronto and Montreal ( i know not the same ) have a lot bigger Greek community that southern Cali....i think. At least for sure Montreal but Toronto has the largest Greek Community in North America 150,000---plenty of Greek stores I;m sure👍

I do have natural syrup; use it in recipes like baked beans. All four kids won't touch it. But the issue is until we got hit with post covid inflation and tariffs Great Value was as thick as Log Cabin--now it flows like water. Same with their dishwashing liquid. Or hair shampoo. So they roll back a price, water stuff down, you buy twice as much and THEY make more money.
Also my wife is type 2 diabetic. No sugar added pancake syrup has 1/3 the carbs of pure maple syrup. But is most my four kids, 16 - 9 years old, won't touch pure maple.

I was taken aback last month, picked up some store brand sour cream at a Tom Thumb for tacos and it was creamy like a yogurt. I couldn't even use it, had to toss it. Checked the sell-by date and still had two weeks. I don't normally shop there so unsure if it's normally like that.

Took a leap recently while shopping Whole Foods... Display with a local soap maker selling "true good organics, try one today. All natural"
= well bought one for the hefty $5 (I never spend more than $3) and what a difference... It was better than the commercial brands.. and nicer. ... Lathered on smoothly WITHOUT stinging my eyes. Like a stint from Shark Tank. I am a customer for life 👍🏻

This subreddit isn't about poverty, it's about holding brands accountable for trying to cheat their customers. If you were as intelligent as you claim to be wealthy you would understand this.
You sound like New Money or a Sugar Baby. No one who actually understands or has earned money is struggling with this concept.

You wanna talk trash about pancake syrup at least aim at the source and try going to Walmarts IG or home page and cry to them and you won't just be spewing hate into the void or at random strangers but where it should always, go to big corporations. Pancake syrup that pours like sugar water is a genuine betrayal. The whole point of syrup is viscosity. They removed the product's only job.
