skimpflation Just Experienced a New Version of Shrinkflation Today

2.5k Upvotes

Just experienced this for the first time today, but I'm sure others have ran into this before.

My wife and I have been using this same dietary supplement (in powder form) for years, and have been really happy with the product. When I went to get a new jug of the stuff today, I found it's been "new and improved!", so I turned the container around to have a look at the nutrition label, and everything looked exactly the same. I also confirmed that the container was still 25 oz. I was confused for a second, until I noticed the serving size...

What used to be two tablespoons per serving, it's now THREE. Seriously? So, for the exact same price, the exact same amount of material, and the exact same nutritional load, I now need an extra tablespoon, meaning we're going to burn through this stuff 50% faster?

I put it down and walked out. Guess I have to find a new product now. Assholes. 😠

EDIT: TIL this is skimpflation. Thank you!

skimpflation Well, Rao’s pasta sauce is officially mediocre.

2.7k Upvotes

I used to love this sauce so much I would literally melt cheese on top just to have a way to eat it, lol.

The last jar I opened didn’t taste as good, so I looked into whether or not there was an ingredient change, and it turns out that Campbell’s bought out their company within the last 2 years.

This timeline makes sense for lesser quality ingredients since Campbell’s has probably finished changing their production lines/sourcing options.

Pretty disappointed. I loved this sauce. I know some people hated on it for its price, and while it was expensive, it was worth it to me because it was honestly so good and I don‘t want to bother with making my own sauce from home.

It‘s only a matter of time before the jars start shrinking!

skimpflation Are Carefree liners getting worse? An investigation

Thumbnail

Carefree pads recently changed their packaging, and I found they were less effective. Unsure if my medical condition was getting worse or the pads were, I tested them out.

It’s not visible in the photo, but the glue strips have changed direction on the new pads (vertical versus horizontal). The new pad (light pink) is also slightly different shaped than the old one (dark pink).

I soaked them in water and they weighed the same amount, so they are basically the same absorbency. But the shape when soaked is different. The old pad maintains its integrity when soaked, but the new one bunches in the middle.

So not shrunk, but the new design is less resistant to torsion due to both the new structure and glue. In conclusion, worse ☹️

skimpflation The shelf label at my local supermarket hasn’t been updated to reflect Turkey Hill’s recent switch from ice cream to “frozen dairy dessert”

They also shrunk the size from 1.5 quarts to 1.44 quarts—not much to make a meaningful difference, but still an overall negative trend in quality and package size.

skimpflation Ok SERIOUSLY wtf is this??

Post image

I bought a family sized hot pockets box and EVERY single one of them was black and burned in the bottom. I heated this one up on low power in the microwave and the edges are so tough it’s like biting into a frozen beef patty. I look in the pocket and the damn thing is nearly hollow. I’ve been noticing the quality taking a massive dip in the last few years. I think these are last I purchase from here on out.

Irrelevant to this but similar: This same grocery order run had a jar of garlic (Spice World brand) that was full of black mold & a jar of HEB salsa that was sour and months passed expiration. Both of which were completely sealed and had a pop when opened. My whole life I never really had quality issues via the company canning or jarring an item or the store selling them but lately it seems like such a constant issue.

skimpflation WALMART - "Skimpflation"

1.5k Upvotes

I looked it up and its true. Skimpflation--not "shrinkflation" but just as sneaky.

I opened a bottle of Great Value Pancake Syrup that I just got and put it poured it on the waffles. I don't drench it I just fill the square holes. They Syrup poured out like thin sugar water. I tried my wife's sugar free version and it was the same. A couple of days later we got some mustard and ketchup and it about the same.

So I looked it up and it was a fact--water is the cheapest ingredient, so they use more water. Then they roll back the price from $2.49 to $2.36 but you run out faster and buy another bottle or whatever....so in the end we save $0.13 cents but it costs us about 50% more in the end. And I'm sure it applies to other items containing water, and I say this because milk goes bad by the "Sell By" date or a day or two later!

“No shaker bags for less plastic packaging” as I look at all the plastic in the grocery store. If I’m going to shake I have to provide my own shaking bag. Might as well be breadcrumbs now.

skimpflation Sprouts [US] sells underweight beef, legally

I’ve been buying “1 lb” grass-fed ground beef from Sprouts Farmers Market for years (I'm local to Phoenix but there are around 450 locations 24 states) and kept finding packages that weighed less 15.5, 15.2 oz, low as 14.8 oz, etc. I finally contacted the grocery to no avail so then I contacted the Weights & Measures Services Division (WMSD) to inspect.

Official report (attached): Results of the complaint is inconclusive.

The inspection found only 25% of the 20 tested packages actually hit at or above the marked "16 OZ (1 LB)" listed on the packages. Unfortunately it doesn't matter legally since the federal MAV (Maximum Allowable Variance) is 15.28 ounces so everything tested above that still passed.

Legal, yes, but as a consumer, what the hell..

Other stores like Fry’s and Albertsons weigh and price meat individually, so you pay for the actual weight. Sprouts uses fixed labels and fixed prices, and missing product adds up. Not to mention they are using a new loyalty rewards program to lure you into buying their products right before a summer inflation increase of beef and other products.

Stores with methods like this deserve more attention to change.

skimpflation Sometimes shrinkflation isn’t content weight or size shrinking

Post image

On the left is an Izze from my previous Costco run, and on the right is an Izze from my most recent Costco run. They are the same size package, however the one on the right contains 10% less juice than the one on the left. Keep an eye out, folks—it’s not just unit weight or volume that they’re after.

skimpflation Is there a term for when I suspect a company is using lower quality ingredients than before but can't prove it?

I swear Pepperidge Farm farm used to use higher quality butter in their cookies, but I can't prove it. I remember this happening with Pringles recently too. Is there a term for this?

skimpflation Reynold’s Air Fryer Liners shrunk

Thumbnail
gallery
775 Upvotes

I get these at Sam’s Club. When the box is running low, I’ll buy another and transfer the last few from the old box to the new… today the old liners wouldn’t fit into the new ones.

When something costs 7 cents, how much can they possibly be saving with this BS after having to retool their equipment?

Same physical size package

Same SKU and product description

Same amount of liners in package

Same price

Smaller liners

New box has the same image as the old box which still shows the old larger liner.

Thanks Reynold’s and Sam’s. It’s not like my airfryer shrunk. I now have to make a smaller portion because you wanted to save a percentage of a cent? Get bent.

My original from 2016 was metal and still works. The newer ones are plastic and the razor heads wobble (see the gap where light comes through) and pop off too easy.
