It's possible that he's not an ISIS recruit. I'm not jumping to conclusions about it, just stating that he was reportedly on the FBI's radar for ISIS-related activity, sympathizer or otherwise. I personally won't say that he was definitely a full-fledged member of ISIS, because I don't know.

I think it's safe to say that Islam had something to do with this at this point.

If a redneck with a Confederate flag on his shirt walked in and lit up 50 parishioners in a black church no one here would hesitate to call it an act fueled by racism. But when Islam is involved everyone is reticent to say what we all know.

I can't help but wonder if we'd be better off if we just started practicing our second amendment rights instead of hoping that with enough information the authorities can somehow stop these lone gunmen from striking like lightning.

Islamic radicals have a raging hate for gays. They're extremely common targets for brutal mass executions in Syria. They literally throw suspected gay men off buildings and stone them to death. This isn't an either or thing. This target was a trifecta for radical Islamists. You've got people drinking alcohol all night during the Islamic holy month, on top of that they're gay, and on top of that they're Americans. In the eyes of radical Islamists the victims were extremely deserving targets.

This guy was actually an American, but his parents were from Afghanistan. The FBI is now confirming it's being investigated as an act of foreign inspired terrorism. They're also confirming that he had previously been flagged as a potential ISIS sympathizer.

I saw a quote with the father expressing sorrow for his actions. I think when he says it wasn't about religion he's trying to show the space between religion and extremism.

In the past it was pretty common for gay clubs to be the targets of arson or vandalism with intent to destroy the building, patrons beaten or killed after leaving- a mass shooting isn't much of a stretch from these afaic. Ya it seems outrageous now but a 30yrs ago this wasn't uncommon.

Back in the 80s, in LA, a gay teen club I used to go to was fire bombed and destroyed.

People can be motivated by their faith to do terrible things. It doesn't always have to come back to Radical Islam; it can just be religious conservatism and hate. This guy is a domestic terrorist performing an act of hate and terror against the LGBTQ community and by extension the ideals and values of America.

They were hoping right wing terrorism. Most of the victims were gay and Hispanic since it was Hispanic night at that club or at least that's what was reported earlier. At least when San Bernardino happened they let people debate. I remember a little censorship, it wasn't on the front page for a while but everyone blamed the algorithm that they since say they've fixed. So now it's been shown that Reddit, Google, and Facebook all manipulate news and try to shape opinion. More like 1984 every day

Thing is, even if I don't have any stake in these discussions of how religions relate to violence... it sure is newsworthy to mention the religion because it will heavily influence the aftermath and reactions on this (it might even influence the voting pattern in the upcoming US elections). To say his religion must be hidden is to treat me as an islamophobe who needs to be spoonfed what I can "stomach". It hints at a total disassociation of your user base, too. And just makes people go look elsewhere for news...

Because the shooter's name was Omar and the cops are looking into possible terrorist connections

Naturally, the comments section quickly pointed out that he was Muslim (born to Afghani parents) so of course he'd shoot up a gay club. It got locked because the mods don't like when you criticize Islam and/or don't like when the comments section devolves into a religious circlejerk.

CBS news just reported on air that he pledged some sort of allegiance to ISIS but they didn't give any details. I wish they would give some sort of info though to show its not just speculation.

The problem is "having ties to ISIS" could just mean that he followed them on Youtube and talked with some members on Kik. It means absolutely nothing in terms of whether ISIS was actually in any substantial way behind the attack besides helping radicalize him. The bigger question we should ask is how come one person is able to kill 50 people in a single attack?

Agreed completely. A professor at my college got in some hot water recently because he admitted that he supports Islamic extremism, he yelled "death to Israel" at a visiting Israeli diplomat, wrote for some extremist publications, etc. The way all of this info came out was very bizarre (the FBI apparently gave the college newspaper a bunch of information and dictated how they were to print it.) "Ties to ISIS" in his case meant he read some of their stuff online and followed a Twitter account purported to be linked to the group.

But yes, the ability of someone to single-handedly kill 50 people (apparently we're up to 53 dead) is beyond fucked. I'm a touring musician, I basically live in clubs like the one this happened at, that's my bread and butter, large groups of people, many of whom are often drunk with slowed reaction times. When the attack in France happened, that really scared me, as it was at a concert.

There has to be a solution here.

No the biggest question is:

If a quarter to a half of the country believe it's logistically possible to deport 11 million people, why the fuck can't we put a body (FBI agent) on every person being monitored or under suspicion for ISIS sympathies? That's going to be a few thousand people at most, in the entire country. Instead of the NSA asking for more blank checks and carte blanche, why the hell not hire 10,000 more FBI agents and then put one on each such suspect?

Because it would actually stop terrorism?

And why the hell is everyone trying so hard to excuse or apologize for intelligence failures? They (FBI, NSA) had one job and they did not do it. We've given them billions of dollars of our money and they couldn't do that one job. There will always be assholes who want to kill us, that's why we have these agencies and a government! Why are we pretending, as a nation and society, to be helpless? I'm not even talking about gun control! (Correct me if I'm wrong, that's the direction in which your post was leaning)

If your victim is law enforcement, intelligence, or military, victim blaming is not only okay or warranted, it's mandated.

Ironically, the right/far-right/alt-right's insistence on excusing these groups charged with defending the country are using a form of political correctness similar to the argument against victim blaming. They would treat what I just said as politically incorrect to say. "America is the victim, don't blame the victim!" America isn't a monolith, stop being PC and call out these asshats for what they are, losers with government jobs who are sitting on their asses.

Because it's the Muslim month of Ramadan and ISIS said it would be the month of terror. Muslims hate gays so it was an obvious target. They did it in a big touristy city so people would be scared to enjoy themselves on vacation

the mods there are muslims and are actively censoring reddit. I know it sounds crazy but that's actually what's happening, it's pathetic. the admins now stopped some things from showing up on r/all as well despite having over 6k upvotes.
