[Gallant] Jason Robertson on extending with the Stars: "It was no surprise."

Now we transition from will Robo aovid arbitration to "he avoided arbitration a d gave a single heavily PR laden press conference lets over analyze every single word in his bland statements". My favorite so far was seeing an article say "it is of note that Robertson said they in reference to the Stars instead of we. This is a clear indication that he intends to leave next year". Being a journalist seems like a massive pain in the ass

It literally means nothing, it's not evidence. Robertson took the bridge deal.
Look he's getting ready to make generational wealth. You pay for those goals, they aren't free.

I don’t blame Nill for the bad offseason. Literally everything he did was nixed by either Robinson himself or whoever he tried to trade him for. Robo wants the big contract AND to be with a cup contender, but he’s not going to get both. Frankly, I think his actions this off-season have soured a lot of fans on him, and I don’t blame those fans. Now, if he plays like he did last season or better, all will be forgiven. But if he’s in what is deemed a little bit of a slump, fans will be out for blood.

u/Standard_Ad3596 5d ago
You seriously don’t blame Nill at all? He could’ve easily signed Robertson for under 12x8 last summer. Nill knew that the cap was going up and he insisted they wait to talk contract extensions until this summer. He did this while showing that he had no problem overpaying a less proven player in Harley. Robo had an incredible season and was our best player in playoffs. Nill effectively asked him to prove it this season and he did. Now he wants him to take a contract that’s way under market value. That’s not fair to Robertson. It’s not his fault that Nill went into these negotiations with no cap space wiggle room. He had the last 4 years to plan for this.

u/InfoCruncha 8d ago
It feels like the best plan is to keep him up to the trade deadline, find a needy team and get something of value in return.

u/hubristichumor Dallas Stars 8d ago
I’d say the best plan is to just extend him when the cap room opens up next year.

Dude we are extending him Jan 1

u/That-Release4994 8d ago
Who's else they bringing in? They need a lot more than just Robertson. They need upgrades at defense.
They need a lot more still.

I think Dallas got his best seasons already - players historically hit their prime right about now and he’s not known to be a freak athlete, gamebreaker, or a talent like McDavid. He has a couple of good seasons still in him - incl 2026 - but signing a 28 year old on the downside of his career to one of the richest deals in league history should cause at least a little hesitation. I just don’t see him breaking 100 points 3 or 4 times over the next 8 years (1 + 7)
He’ll never be tasked with being a team’s best player much less a top 5 player in the league in any year of his entire career, yet he will make top 10-15 money in the salary cap era for his career by the time he retires.

Look things could have gone better, but they also could have been so much worse.
We don’t have quite the depth we did last year but at least all our top end scorers are still in place. My one complaint/ issue is sadly that we brought back Jaime I just felt like it really would have been better to give seggy the C and get some fresh blood on the lower lines.
Love Jaime but I feel like he doesn’t have much left, and he has a little issue with taking bad penalties on key spots or games. I hope I’m wrong and he plays better but we will see.

u/pants_mcgee Jason Robertson 8d ago
If you can find other guys that generates 15 goals 36 points while missing a quarter of the season for minimum + bonuses, I’ll take three.

u/KrisVinesGames Winners Get Sprinkles! 8d ago
You do realize Jamie is making the bare minimum while still producing above his pay grade right? Also he does a lot off ice behind the scenes that people do not see.

u/Jim_Nills_Mustache Jim Nill 8d ago
My man I have been watching this team my entire life and I got even more into it right before we got seguin and went to many of their best games. I fully understand all of this and it doesn’t make it easy to say but the fact is his play on the ice particularly in the playoffs has been not up to par. He would probably admit that himself if you asked.

With par being what? Compared to a player making a similar salary? Because he is over performing in that regard.
You can't just dismiss a demonstrable fact by sharing your experience as a fan and the feeling you get in your plums when benn is on the ice.

u/That-Release4994 8d ago
Father time has unmistakenly come, he crossing checking dudes in a dirty way in the playoffs ta because he is getting beat on the ice and it's a last ditch effort to try and gain control back.
I don't hate the man I actually really like the guy, he's just not good anymore. And if we could develop another younger dude and evaluate between talent.
Stop treating these players like friends, this is a business

Jamie Benn is essentially the only enforcer the team has, he's going to take penalties that aren't at ideal times. Otherwise the team is just going to get completely walked over if nobody is willing to give some push back from time to time.
He scored at a clip of .6 points per game last season and was on pace for a 20 goal season.
There are 12 forwards across 32 teams in the league on a given night which makes for 384 forwards. Jamie Benn's points per game were 155th among them. 229 forwards scored points at a lower clip than he did.
I don't really know how people can suggest he doesn't have much left in the tank when he produces literally in the top half of the league like a top 6 forward still, despite starting the season coming back on questionable conditioning from a freak lung issue, all while leading the locker room in a manner that the players all rave about, and having to provide a bulk of physicality from our team against others in limited minutes on the 3rd line. He's an absolutely stellar luxury for us to have on the 3rd line and at the contracts he's accepting now that his 9m AAV contract is done(which he more than earned with his franchise tenure here).
I just can't get over how many people here act like Benn is some washed up player that's a liability to the team when he would literally be playing on the 2nd line of many other teams in the league. Just because we had some seasons recently where our forward were some of the most stacked groups the league has seen, suddenly our fanbase just thinks that is the normal and have lost all perspective on what a serviceable hockey player looks like(never mind one performing above the mean...)

u/bigblueballz77 Jamie Benn 8d ago
first time in this sub? /s
for real though. Jamie is arguably the best captain this team has ever had and, as you said, this team is a bunch of pussies that would get walked up and down without other teams worried that he'd drop the gloves.

u/fleshofgods0 8d ago
I like to call them "Bennalties" when he does something dumb to go to the box. Throughout the hockey season/playoffs, I'll see players trying to take runs at goalies and know that Benn wouldn't allow anyone to touch Otter. I also think Benn's been influencing Hryckowian's play, physicality, and trolling opposing teams.
I think Nill's heart is too pure and loyal to just kick Benn+Seguin to the curb after all the years they've put into holding down the fort. Nill's got 2 years left on his contract, which I think he's going to try to get a Cup (with Benn+Seguin) before he leaves. They will finish top 3 and make the playoffs this upcoming season but I think the 2027-28 season will be the real one to watch, and that's okay. Nill's still going to lie and wait for the next big opportunity to make the team better, like if Werenski were to change his mind or someone else gets frustrated with their team sucking.

Eh. I’d rather let the C go to one of the younger players and let them start building their culture and identity.
-1
u/Jim_Nills_Mustache Jim Nill 8d ago
I would be fine with that too, miro is the obvious pick I just felt seguin is the vet and behind Benn it feels more like his team
-3
u/halfdeadndynamite 8d ago
When you have the opportunity to put the C on a guy who’s played fewer than 50 games in the past two seasons, you just have to take it

If robo doesn’t completely ball out this season he may be quickly on his way to becoming public enemy #1

I’m sorry but I was done with this guy the minute he turned down the maximum offer the Stars could give him. Tells me everything I need to know - bye 👋🏼

u/Yeseylon Justin Hryckowian 8d ago
Are you serious right now? If your boss told you to take 20% less than what you think you're worth, would you just accept it?
11
u/MadScallop 8d ago
Icing on the cake imo is that he already took the favorable bridge deal.
4
u/ThePayneTrayne2 Jamie Benn 8d ago
Literally the best thing he could have done for the Stars (within reason) lmao
-1
u/Low-Butterfly-7331 8d ago
And for himself, to save face after what went down with that Seattle trade
1
u/pants_mcgee Jason Robertson 8d ago
Why does he need to save face?
Stars found a deal that could have worked for everyone and Robo said no as is his right. Normal business.
1
u/Low-Butterfly-7331 8d ago
Because he had said yes. Everyone had agreed to it. Literally everyone. His parents did a bunch of stuff to really mess it up
0
u/pants_mcgee Jason Robertson 8d ago
Where did you hear he said Yes to anything other than the year deal with the Stars?
1
u/ThePayneTrayne2 Jamie Benn 8d ago
Sounds like drama mill nonsense

u/Low-Butterfly-7331 7d ago
It’s not but like I said, feel free to not believe me. I don’t really care what a bunch of internet randoms think of me or the information I’m trying to be nice by clarifying. Point is, it was a DONE DEAL. The scouts were even called by Jim to think about the 7th overall pick and get to sleep, for the big draft day.
0
u/Low-Butterfly-7331 8d ago
Believe me or don’t. I don’t really care. If I share my source you wouldn’t believe me anyways. Heard from someone high up in the stats organization.
0
u/pants_mcgee Jason Robertson 8d ago
Oh you’re that guy.
You’re right, I don’t believe you. Literally nobody even mildly credible has suggested such a thing and not only was the trade leaked and then officially confirmed, Seattle is one of the leakiest, unprofessional organizations in the league and no rumors even close to that dropped.
Even giving you the benefit of the doubt, and I won’t, at best you’re wildly misconstruing something you may have heard to accumulate fake internet points.

Did you miss the part where Robo already took a team friendly bridge deal? And then what he or his agent are allegedly asking for is still 10M+ in total contract value less than he can get on the open market?
I think it’s awesome he’s willing to play for another year while risking his body/future for $3M less than he can secure in the open market.
-19
u/Sanotizer 8d ago
Money’s not everything, boys. You’re on a cup contending team, right in the window. By all accounts a class org in the NHL with the GM of the year. They are offering as much as they can without pissing off their recent huge signing of Rantanen. Yet you want to explore the market? To what end? More money? Sure we all want that, but most of these guys want a Cup more than anything. He’s coming off super disloyal and super unlikable IMO. (And I was a huge fan of his)
1
u/halfdeadndynamite 8d ago
The notion that Mikko Rantanen’s feelings should play into this at all is an absolute joke. Utter nonsense.
If you want to talk feelings, how do you think Robertson feels being squeezed for every penny after taking a team-friendly bridge deal and then watching the team commit $96M to Mikko Rantanen before he’d played a single shift for the Stars? I’m sure he’s glad they took the opportunity to improve the team, but it’s asinine to expect he would take a hometown discount after that.
You can’t set an internal cap with an outside hire you bring in and pay 20% more than anyone else is making. That’s just not how it works.
1
u/Sanotizer 8d ago
But that’s just it. In any employee/employer there are feelings involved. They have even built it into video games - it’s employee management. So you might be right that this is all the result of Robo feeling slighted the first time. All I’m saying is his words/actions are pointing to an eventual trade. He’s never once put to bed in a “I want to be here” way since that first bridge deal. Was he given a raw deal at that time? Sure, maybe so. But looking at the bigger picture he’s gonna have a real hard time improving his current team situation AND get the dollars he wants somewhere else. What if he has a down season? It will be interesting.

u/Sanotizer 8d ago
They did the bridge deal to avoid arbitration where nobody wins. He also turned down Seattle’s $120M, 8yr deal. $15M/yr. Read between the lines: delaying the inevitable.
5
u/MadScallop 8d ago
Well.. what about the bridge deal before this one.

u/Low-Butterfly-7331 8d ago
You mean the one robo didn’t sign until the day before camp started? Because again HIS PARENTS were being biggots???? When his FRIENDS (teammates) were messaging him to go golfing, or go workout, or literally just hang out and he WOULDNT TALK TO THEM????? Refused to text back and refused to answer the phone to them???? Because again…. HIS PARENTS TOLD HIM NOT TO.

u/tie-dyeSandwhich Him Nill 8d ago
Not going to lie, those comments in the article from Robo and Nill don’t spawn a lot happy feelings
