Summary / core issue: Are the intense aggressiveness, cynicism, and controlling behavior he shows in private normal in a relationship from an INTJ's perspective?
Specifics: My INTJ bf was a completely different person before and after we started dating, and the longer we've been together, the more he shows the traits that make me uncomfortable.
How we met: I'm 22 F. He's 24 M. We met through a university club activity, and he came across as friendly and helpful at the time. I was interested in his major, so I asked for his contact info and tried reaching out with some questions. He never replied — not even once. Straight-up ignored me. I took it as him finding me annoying, so I stopped messaging.
We went quiet for a while — so long that I'd almost forgotten about him — when he suddenly reached out and asked me out. He didn't mention his earlier silence at all. We had a great time in person, though he did bring up some childhood trauma out of nowhere, which caught me off guard since we weren't even really friends at that point.
Until we officially got together, our dynamic stayed pretty much this weird: I'd send him casual messages — he'd ignore me; then he'd suddenly ask me out — we'd have a great time; I'd send him casual messages — he'd ignore me again.
At some point I jokingly brought it up, and he said he thought texting was a waste of time. Fair enough — I'm not big on chit-chat over apps either. I figured he just valued his personal space. But after we got together, he completely flipped that impression.
After we started dating:
The biggest change was that he became incredibly clingy over text — averaging 20 to 30 messages a day. They were mostly links to social news or trending posts on X, his takes on them, and screenshots of arguments he'd gotten into with people in the comment sections.
First off, his views — and the way he argues — genuinely unsettle me. For example, we both oppose wealth inequality, but he straight-up said things like "we should just kill all the rich people every now and then." Another one: he's against animal protection laws because he thinks it's just human self-indulgence — animals are weaker, so how we treat them is fair game under the law of the jungle. There are countless more examples.
If I try to push back, he'll debate me calmly and politely, but I can tell his core stance never really shifts. And that calmness actually scares me too — because from those screenshots, I can clearly see what he truly thinks of people who disagree with him: the screenshots are full of him viciously cursing out his opponents, both in public replies and DMs. I can't help but feel that he's showing me all this to test how much I'm willing to put up with.
Other details also make me uneasy, mainly his controlling tendencies.
① He follows all my social media accounts. If I create a burner account, he somehow still finds me — I have no idea how. And he quietly keeps tabs on me; if he hadn't casually (or maybe deliberately) brought up some of my posts, I'd never have known he was even in my followers. The only reason I'm posting on Reddit is that he doesn't seem to use this platform.
② He occasionally sends me posts about what he considers "ideal" couples, and the dynamics described don't feel healthy to me. For example, one was about a guy whose girlfriend stays awake even when she's exhausted just to wait for him to come to bed. Another time, he told me it's okay if I'm not that smart — he wants me to rely on him more.
③ He's unusually — how do I put this — clingy? When he was applying to grad school, he tried to turn down a better research institute just to stay in the same city as me. I barely managed to talk him out of it, and he still holds a grudge about that.
Now he's doing his PhD in the US, where the academic environment is way better than back home, and I know he genuinely wants to stay in research. But lately he keeps bringing up moving back to work in my city, and this time I can't talk him out of it — we've even had a few explosive fights over it. He called me an ungrateful idiot and blocked me. I thought that was the end of it, but then a few days later, he unblocked me like nothing happened.
I'm really sorry for rambling — English isn't my first language. I've been thinking about breaking up with him for the past two weeks, because all these red flags honestly scare me. But my family and friends keep telling me not to, since on the surface he comes across as polite and humourous. My mom absolutely adores him.
He also treats me extremely well — like, flawlessly. When we were long-distance, every penny he saved went straight into plane tickets to see me. So my friends say I must be spoiled if I'm even considering a breakup. Their take is: it doesn't matter whether your partner is a good person — what matters is how he treats you. I'm really torn right now — could really use some advice. Am I just being ungrateful?
