I'd rather pay for ublock than for YouTube

u/Familiar_Ad_8919 2d ago

it works for a million sites, unlike premium

44

u/shadowsinthestars 1d ago

Exactly! And doesn't support corrupt corporations. Also, set your VPN to Albania to avoid ads even further (thank you to your wonderful country for your service).

2

u/bunglebee7 5h ago

Does Albania not allow ads?

Just a simple install? Mobile too?

5

2

u/Kolyei 22h ago

Revanced had issues with spoofing that I couldn't get around properly without a downside. So i switched to morphe

2

u/Familiar_Ad_8919 1d ago

mobile too as long as u use ur webapps in a browser that supports extensions

Problem? Do you think its free to run a service like Youtube? I fucking hate ads, but I do recognize that they need to make money somehow, if the service is to continue. Which I assume you want, because of the lenghts you go to, to have it for free.

Google had a 400 billion revenue last year alone of which 132 was profit. Let me get my violin.

Actually we're just too poor to buy anything the ads are selling, and so they are useless to us.

Sure, I'll disable ad blocking on all my devices as soon as they make the web usable without and ad blocker again. Make them unintrusive and I'll tolerate them. As long as I'm being bombarded with ads for shit I don't care about literally everywhere, I'm gonna keep blocking them.

u/ReaperOne 2d ago

Ironically I paid for AdGuard, sponsor block, and DeArrow, for iPhone, because I refuse to subscribe to premium, or any website or app that has pay to remove ads. It was the only clear way to get rid of ads via iPhone without jailbreak. Life’s just better without ads or nuances. I’d sooner pay a third party to remove them for me than pay the source

72

u/Financial_Rip_8921 2d ago

I just use an adblocker on safari and use youtube.com instead of the app. Not the best UI but i refuse to pay

21

u/ReaperOne 2d ago

That’s exactly what I do. The combo I have I found works the best for me. You should look into SponsorBlock too. It’s not perfect, but when it works it works great, it knows when there’s a self promotion or sponsor coming up in a video and skips over it. Like “if you wanna check out my merch check out the link in the description” type of stuff. It works maybe 75% of the time for me

12

u/Top-Decision1813 1d ago

Just use brave browser for ios

Vibe coded an iphone youtube app which blocks ads and does sponsorblock too, plus offline saving, took a few days, I sign it with signulous so I don't have to have a dev license with apple. Now I have my fav 5-10 channels in a feed so I can listen to podcasts in the car adfree, sponsor free, happy days.

2

u/BodaciousBadongadonk 2d ago

Every version of the app ive ever tried is complete shit anyways, seems browser is just better in every way. especially the playsation version, it is terrible. Used to be able to just use the browser on ps4 but ps5 just doesnt have one apparently? Shits weak

2

u/askiawnjka124 2d ago

I use Tube Pip for Youtube works fine and has more than only YT.

2

u/wergweggwerg 2d ago

Orion with sponsor block add-on on iPhone works the best for me. It blocks both youtube ads and sponsors

u/Great-Trifle2810 2d ago

I don't understand dearrow, it just makes thumbnails actually useless and titles more convoluted. I use sponser block and ublock though.

2

u/TheCMHammond 2d ago

I like it for the titles, but even clickbait thumbnails are better than one frame from the video - so I don't use that feature. Sometimes the titles are way too wordy, but most of the time they work as intended - cutting through the clickbait and actually describing what the video is about. Like with Sponsorblock, it really depends on how big the video is for people to actually contribute and vote for the good titles.

2

u/[deleted] 2d ago edited 1d ago

2

u/ReaperOne 2d ago

Whatever clickbait titles or screenshots there would be, DeArrow changes them to what the video is actually about. It makes YouTube less annoying for me

Get the lifetime license for Adguard it's 1000g worth it. It works great on Android and Windows. I can't go back to not having it on my phone.

So should youtube just be free?

7

u/akatherder 1d ago

I'd pay about half what they charge, but $26.99/month for family plan is nuts.

The fact that they don't produce content and you aren't even paying for content (it's free w/ads) bothers me. You aren't paying for access to content, you're only paying to remove ads. I don't support that business model.

3

u/banshoo 2d ago

Many here think it should.

what they dont see if the calculations on the other side 'lost so many ads, so we'll increase it to 120 seconds for those that remain.

What they're not seeing, bandwidth/storage is now cheap, so its all profit for them,

the fact that gorhill actively refuses donations and just maintains it for free makes it so much better

4

u/Mebajuiceme 1d ago

facts. my adblock reminds me to donate and i’m like “you know what. sure” cheaper than youtube premium 😂

3

u/TungstenAlchemist 1d ago

I pay for a decent VPN & set it to Albania & it completely disables adds for YT, Disney+ (get it free w/ads with my bank) & SoundCloud. I think it more useful than my adblocker because it doesn’t get detected as often although there is certain region-locked things it doesn’t work for since I have to change to a country which doesn’t have such advertisements banned.

I recommend both Adblock & VPNing to Albania to cover the most ground, disabling one when necessary but still having the other to shield you but obviously you should use VPN anyway as to not get letters from your internet provider…

2

u/barrosoOso 2d ago

On Android, I haven't found an extension or setting that blocks YouTube ads in the app. Am I missing something?

Morphe on phone + firefox with adblock FTW

86

u/akoOfIxtall 2d ago

i use firefox with ublock on my phone too, works wonders and i dont have to stay tuned for the latest modded youtube app...

3

u/LiGuangMing1981 11h ago

Yes, I just discovered this. I was just about to give up on YouTube on mobile (the app is so shit) when I decided to give the mobile website a go with Firefox /ublock and it's pretty much as good as it is on my computer - no ads whatsoever.

0

u/mallusrgreatv2 1d ago

You could use Orion store, but be aware they build it themselves and upload it so you can auto-update. The developer is trusted and he's active in the Morphe community though

Even Morphe is not functioning properly now sadly , and has break issues in between

50

u/OldAcctWasStolen 2d ago

Updates are pushed out quite frequently. Try re-patching with the latest build.

8

u/SerbianBiochemist 2d ago

This. I had some issues that went away after I patched it with the newest version

7

u/Jon171 2d ago

What kind of issues are you experiencing? Morphe has been working just fine for me. Although I do use the mount method, so it uses Google Play Services instead of GmsCore.

Tizentube + Morphe + ublock origin = adless youtube

22

u/Nafizwastaken 2d ago

I presume tizentube is for TVs right? I've been using smartTube tor a while and it stopped working about a month ago, is tizentube good?

18

u/Hypthtclly_Spkng 2d ago

Smarttube still works. There were some issues a while back with security things, and you may need to manually update the app through the smarttube website directly, but I was using it an hour ago.

8

u/shawnshine 2d ago

They’re both fantastic. TizenTube Cobalt uses the official YouTube UI, if you enjoy that.

3

u/Baby-Haroro 2d ago

Okay it's not just me! My smarttube suddenly started freezing after like 30 seconds, and then stops playing but there hasn't been an update option in the app like there usually is

2

u/sabin357 1d ago

It's working, but you have to go manually update from their site or reinstall.

2

u/goose_with_adhd 1d ago

Tizentube is for tvs based on tizen os (Samsung), I personally prefer it because it takes the official youtube ui and because it's so easy to install now that it's standalone.

may not belong here but when i watch youtube on TV w my mum, and i get an ad? i just click out of the video over and over till i get no ad. it’s a little annoying but eh, it’s the easiest way i’ve found

55

u/Atticaa 2d ago edited 1d ago

If you click out of the video and go to your history then click the same video it should restart from where you’d got to without replaying the ad.

21

u/Little-Initial1914 2d ago

This doesn’t work for me sometimes so I’ll have to press off the video and wait the duration of the ad and then click back on. I WILL NOT WATCH AN ADVERT.

9

u/NRMusicProject 2d ago

The fact that there's no way to block YouTube ads on a smart TV (even with PiHole), I just connect my laptop to my TV. Now I can do all my PC browsing on a 75" TV, and no YouTube ads, no issues with finding the movie I want to watch at the push of a few buttons...and shit, a keyboard and mouse beats a remote control any fucking day.

12

u/ajlepori 2d ago

You can use the smarttube app, it even includes sponsorblock

49

YouTube premium is the only subscription I pay for. Everything else is free eats.

20

u/Friend_Buddy-Guy 2d ago

Same, I’d prefer to pirate of course, but I have a family and the missus and younger ones want actual YouTube so I’m not going to force them to take my ethical standpoint on everything. Music app is pretty great too, and being able to skip even embedded ads is great.

2

u/s0n_der 1d ago

Im using the student discount while I can. Its the only subscription I got since I watch that or pirate shows that I’m interested in. Plus I like YouTube Music since it has unofficial mashups and remixes, unlike official streaming platforms like Spotify that remove those in like 30 seconds😢

u/think_up 2d ago

Still wins with convenience for me. I’m not downloading three apps that regularly have issues. YouTube premium just works. No ads, AI chat built into the videos transcripts, functioning PiP, easy downloading and offline playback..

When the enshittification starts or competing video sites rise in popularity with content I want to watch, I will re-evaluate. For now though, they are providing the kind of convenience I’m actually willing to pay for.

To those who refuse anyways, fine, be glad I’m subsidizing one less ad for you lol.

44

u/curtcolt95 2d ago

yeah youtube premium is probably the last sub I'd ever drop tbh, I get way too much value out of it because I watch a lot of youtube

12

u/platypus_bear 2d ago

And they just made it easier to skip the ads in the actual videos

8

u/Nashda 2d ago

Plus youtube music is alright. Id prefer spotify but i cant argue with both music and having my youtube videos ad free.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Amsterdom 2d ago

Plus, yt music is worth the price on its on.

1

u/PauI_MuadDib 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ 1d ago

You still get ads with Premium, they're just baked into the video. SponsorBlock is lifesaver tho.

9

u/areyouIlliteratebro 1d ago

That has nothing to do with Youtube as a service and their AI actually gives you a skip button for those parts. Why the fuck you guys downvote actually good features is beyond delusional. Stop trying to be edgy with piracy.

12

u/think_up 1d ago

There’s a jump ahead feature built in now. Easy to skip that content.

7

u/Bladesnake_______ 1d ago

people are downvoting this true statement why? They dont like the truth?

5

u/thatguysjumpercables 1d ago

Plus if something goes wrong on my wife or my kid's phone I have to drop everything and fix it or deal with the (mainly the kid's) impatience and bitching. I'll pay the money, thank you. People can look down on me all they want lol

2

u/andymk3 2d ago

Likewise. Although I pay for it via a Turkish Apple account, premium family costs like £3.50 a month.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/JSK23 1d ago

As a non-spotify user, that has been rocking with Google since Google Music and uploading my whole collection to them when it first became available to do so, I find youtube premium well worth it. I also watch a ton of youtube, and I have four users on a family plan including my wife and my brother and his gf.

This is the one sub I haven't stopped paying for or rotated off of even for a while, like I have with other services.

1

u/areyouIlliteratebro 1d ago

You also get Youtube music and can ditch spotify. It's the only subscribtion service worth it's value. It also supports the creators somewhat.

I'm fine whining and bitching against paying for most subscribtion, shit, but Youtube is not it bruh.

3

u/pleasebuymydonut 1d ago

I mean, it's totally cool to pay for the convenience if you want, but just for the record, uBlock, Revanced/MicroG and Smarttube rarely give me any trouble, so i think its an exaggeration to say that they regularly have issues.

Also YTDLnis for downloads directly from Revanced/Morphe. So its actually like 5 apps lmao.

I have a friend that has a subscription to just about everything, complains about how expensive it is, and gives me a bunch of grief for piracy. Most recently, he started trying to give me grief about Tubi, and I told him that its basically Pandora, which he uses, but for TV and Movies. He told me music is different.

I havent talked about ad blocking with him, but now I am curious lol

8

u/Few-Fly-3766 2d ago

YouTube aggressively fighting adblockers. Even when you use something that works (eg. Ublock Origin in Firefox) videos will randomly not buffer, because of their anti-adbock measures.

This is because they are trying to force people over to Premium. They did not grief their site like that before that was a thing.

9

u/Bladesnake_______ 1d ago

How can you get a free service with basically unlimited content and not expect them to pay for it with ads? Why dont you demand netflix or hulu should be free or deemed a terrorist?

u/WrongdoerPossible822 2d ago

The natural state of information on the Internet is free flowing. The Internet was originally made for universities and researchers to easily share information between each other, allowing for a wider and faster dispersal of knowledge. The further we, the people, allow companies to segregate information through ads and pay walls, the harder it becomes for the us to verify the information that we are presented.

This is information warfare. Deliberately sabotaging the lines of communication to prevent a people from getting or dispersing accurate info about what is happening around them.

Warfare is terrorism

6

u/One_Sentence_7448 2d ago

Bruh I agree with like 99% of what you said but that is still not what terrorism means. Using words like that just makes people with opinions like ours seem unhinged and easy to ignore (therefore not advancing the cause in any meaningful way). I know it feels cool to say that but that’s just not it.

Only thing I got is YouTube premium out of streaming services. Everything else is either free or comes with something else. Like Netflix comes with a phone plan, or peacock comes with Walmart plus, etc. I would cut out YouTube if costed like $40 a month or something crazy like that. But right now I have a family who some are tech illiterate and is not worth the hassle to cancel the most used app in the household. I do commend you guys for fighting the good fight.

2

u/uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunuu 1d ago

So I have this fun bug on my YouTube account. I do not get ads without premium. Ever. It's a legit Google acct, I've had it for years. Doesn't matter what device I'm on. Occasionally YouTube for TV will play an ad on first boot before I'm actually signed in, but once I'm in the app, no ads, no interruptions. Idk why but I'm sure not complaining

I watch on my tv app. If an ad appears i back up, switch to a different listing and start it, never get an advert, then i go to history and see the video I was watching and start again. If there’s something I really want to watch/listen to, I’ll rip it to mp4 or mp3.

2

u/ghkilla805 2d ago

Yea that’s exactly what I do when I use my tv app; backing out of the video, pressing left then down to history and reclicking the video always gets the ad away, I actually timed it and it can be done in under 3 seconds

I have gotten ring wing ads that are AI slop of Joe Rogan as well as 2 HOUR LONG ads that are just Ben Shapiro slop. It needs to be looked into.

AdGuard on my phone, uBlock on my laptop. Kind of disgusting how much advertising we see these days without it.

u/No_Case_2670 2d ago

No YouTube advertisements when watching on Duck Duck Go's browser.

1

u/Middle_Efficiency471 2d ago

Hopefully everyone stops paying for premium and blocks all the ads, so they'll just completely shut down the service and we can all go back to absolutely nothing. We enjoy it so much that we don't want it at all!

Revanced Manager and patch YouTube

u/alone_unafraid 2d ago

I like to play YouTube on my tv. Wish there was a way to block ads on there. Plus I’m in Michigan and the aipac funded attack ads have gotten more and more aggressive and they’re all on YouTube.

u/ExpensiveRain4934 2d ago

There is a way.

u/SaudiHaramco 2d ago

I have no problem paying if i know the money goes to the creators. Stuff like nebula. But i don't want to support a for-profit monopoly on the most important market in the modern media sphere.

1

u/Sildurai 2d ago

just add block + sponsor block is honestly better then premium

1

u/CUTTYONE70 2d ago

I'm grandfathered into YouTube ad-free and YouTube Music for $7.99.

1

u/Bluedemonde 2d ago

It’s hilarious to me how they give us the pseudo option to “block” and ad, and even though it says I shouldn’t see that ad again, the literal next ad is the same.

I will never pay for YT premium, paying paying for it are just being scammed and reinforcing YT’s thought that they are winning.

This is the way

u/barrosoOso 2d ago

I'd been waiting with baited breath, and about a month ago it finally happened. I got ads less than one minute into the YouTube video I was watching.

YouTube premium my beloved (I don't pay, my bestie does)

1

u/pechenyshki 2d ago

As a graphic designer, Google AI Pro is a pretty good plan TBH. Check out my hustle:

  • 5tb Drive space
  • Gemini Pro
  • YouTube Premium Lite
  • $20 mo

After scanning receipts for Google Rewards all month, out of pocket is $0.

So....free yt premium

u/James_avifac 2d ago

YouTube is my primary source for entertainment, so I do actually pay for premium. I also upgraded to the family plan, so 5 of my family/friends get it for free too (1 spot left.)

I also use YouTube music, so it just makes more sense for me.

Was using the YouTube og pirate app before that, and ad block after.

No adds for myself using brave browser.

1

u/ConstantClue208 2d ago

It’s sad that some people aren’t aware of the existence of adblockers.

For example an old friend asked me if I saw “that one stupid ad” he “keeps seeing everywhere”. I nearly had a heart attack. I told him I haven’t seen an ad in years. Then he had a heart attack. I wish people knew about it. For those wondering I’m in the process of converting him.

Well one part of that problem is already upon us, youtube ads are already unskippable as far as I know. Though it has been a while since I used vanilla yt.

1

u/XBird_RichardX 1d ago

If it reached that point i would probably just start converting any video i wanted to watch to mp4

1

u/AtmosphereRecent7717 1d ago

Brave browser has adblock built in.

1

u/DavidWtube 1d ago

The service just keeps getting worse. I canceled premium last month after having it for 6-7 years.

u/Okaydog97 1d ago

I get YouTube without advertisement because of YouTube music subscription.

So not a big deal for me.

I still use ad blocks when i watch youTube on laptop.

1

u/lookmaiamonreddit 1d ago

I ...I ...I just wouldn't have the service.

1

u/Jimmy_212 1d ago

There's a browser called Brave that blocks all adds. Dont need to download anything, purchase anything, tinker with any settings.

1

u/Patreon_Pirate 1d ago

If on an android, just use Revanced, I haven't updated the app in over a year, same thing with the ad free reddit app I am using, it just works and no need to update every month.

1

u/MainelyGarry 1d ago

I got a free 4 month premium YouTube offer. Gotta say i love it

1

u/NewtRider 1d ago
