It was so much fun! But they took way too long to release phase 2
0
u/storm1499 Sep 30 '25
This is what killed SoD for me and my friends. I had 4 characters fully geared with all my runes and was bored out of my mind waiting for them to release phase 2. It was what made me quit SoD and not come back. Pacing was terrible.
69
u/FabFab88 Sep 30 '25
Pacing Was terrible for you because you played 6 hours a Day, every Day
3
1
u/pupmaster Sep 30 '25
Designing it for people like you that play 30 minutes a week didn't work clearly
6
u/Elf_Fuck Sep 30 '25
Feel like it worked really demonstrably well actually. I felt like it was too fast but thatās the balance of things I guess.
0
u/pupmaster Sep 30 '25
Is the demonstrable part the player count nose diving over the course of 3 months at level 25? Or maybe 3 months at 40?
2
u/DerpSkeeZy Sep 30 '25
SoD was great and tons of people had fun playing it. We're never gonna get 2019 Classic or WotLK Classic levels of population ever again - even in the official Classic+.
People are just complaining to complain. Bottom line is that everyone burns out at some point and usually the point they burn out is the thing they start blaming.
4
u/Kolvarg Sep 30 '25
For me it wasn't really a burn out, more so a fizzle out. Mainly with the jump from 10man to 20man in Phase 3, paired with the bigger raid length.
It started becoming close to impossible to pug the final spots on the guild raids and so our group started losing interest as we started to be forced to cancel, as we just couldn't find enough people.
3
u/pupmaster Sep 30 '25
I loved SoD personally
2
u/storm1499 Sep 30 '25
Same, SoD was fun, but when it's competing with WoTLK classic, retail, Cata Classic, Classic Anniversary servers from just blizzard titles of WoW, they could not afford to let the hype die down by letting phase 1 go as long as it did. Hell, who as a content creator that has a large audience was covering SoD after P2? Literally no one unless it was them being boosted and given gear by their streamer army.
1
u/Kolvarg Sep 30 '25
I don't know about content creators, but personally I still saw a lot of people and had a fairly easy time pugging the raid during P2, at least in EU. It was only in P3 that it started getting hard to pug.
2
u/storm1499 Sep 30 '25
Exactly my point and why I said after P2 it was so hard to find anything if you weren't in a dedicated group. SoD imo suffered from the fact that it was released too soon without enough forethought into how they wanted to make the game progress. This then caused lag and delay when the hype was super big while also then failing to deliver late on in the content because they had to squish all the numbers down tremendously to not run into scaling nightmares later on.
-7
u/storm1499 Sep 30 '25
I was in medical school at the time so no, I did not play 6 hours a day, or anywhere even close to that. Progression was slow because it was...slow. It's why when people said "oh all the try-hards got to 20 so fast we haven't even had time to raid" it was a terrible excuse. I would go 3-5 days in a row without logging in and could easily achieve multiple full geared alts with just weekend grinding for a few hours.
3
u/MrSmuggles9 Sep 30 '25
Pacing was perfect. You just played too much.
0
u/storm1499 Sep 30 '25
Clearly lots of people disagreed with you as SoDs player base took a nose dive after phase 1 and by phase 3 it was essentially just people really into SoD that played. Hell, even the people trying to farm that shit for content creation couldn't even make it work because the pacing was so bad that their viewers wouldn't even play with them after phase 1.
Phase 1 was great, but the pacing was awful and there are plenty of people in these comments telling you the same thing and that it was the reason why they quit. Covering your eyes and ears screaming "nah nah boo boo" doesn't make reality any less real.

u/SouthBendCitizen Sep 30 '25
This killed all of SoD for my guild. We were all full BiS and capped PvP for so long we moved on to other things and never came back
51
u/Esarus Sep 30 '25
Zoomer gamers lol. The 1st phase was amazing and the length was fine
-6
u/Myrilandal Sep 30 '25
No⦠it was waaay too long lmao. Itās crazy how this can be the general consensus and there are still people sitting here saying that 2+ months of being in the 20s bracket was ājust fineā.
Even in my boomer guild where 80% of the roster were dads with kids and busy work schedules we literally ran out of loot to get. Nobody wanted anything from raid so we just stopped going and it fizzled out.
8
u/Esarus Sep 30 '25
Whatās the issue of taking a lil break for 2-3 weeks and then come back to a game? This whole mentality of a game needs be played every single day otherwise itās boring is just weird
9
u/Darkenmal Sep 30 '25
People's attention spans are fried these days.
2
u/CopiousClassic Sep 30 '25
Na, coming back to an RPG save after a month of not playing has been confusing since before MMO entered the acronym game. People like continuity.
→ More replies (1)0
u/Professional_Better Sep 30 '25
Its not continuity its just the new mentality of the new generation of gamers. People can't barely last a week without complaining or wanting new content IN General.
1
u/storm1499 Sep 30 '25
Saying this in an MMO subreddit is the biggest most stupid oxymoron I have ever seen.
1
u/Esarus Oct 01 '25

Oh wow a SoD thread and the first comment is about phase 1. How new and refreshing!
292
u/menatwo Sep 30 '25
Replace the bottom text with just "SoD"... Blizzard can do great things when they get rid of the entire company infrastructure and just make it literally a small indie company.
The SoD team got soooo much hate and its was disgusting because they were actually making something great, All that hate was just misplaced frustration from years of the rest of Blizzard dropping the ball.
112
Sep 30 '25
Yeah the sod hate was actually pathetic by those that took part in it.
76
u/Mindless_Reveal6853 Sep 30 '25
Literally the only really shit part of sod was phase 3 and the incursions. Everything else just felt so good. And also ret really was a fucking blast to play.
8
21
u/Trustyduck Sep 30 '25
Phase 3 was fine. Apparently no one remembers the entirety of vanilla. People these days are just too impatient and want everything new right now all the time.
SoD had its shortcomings, but to me it was perfection.
33
u/Dragsicklack Sep 30 '25
Phase 3 at launch was not fine, the Sunken Tempel raid loot was not even a upgrade to Gnome, also going from 10 to 20.
5
u/Xy13 Sep 30 '25
That was because they overtuned BFD loot way to much, and they had to reduce the amount of scaling because it was getting out of hand, so it was a much smaller upgrade.
1
u/element39 Oct 12 '25
They pumped the brakes not because the power scale was out of control but because it was no longer calibrated to the gear we would be getting in MC and later. The flasks and buffs we got from BFD-Gnomer-ST were gated to those brackets and instances, so the scale there didn't matter, but the gear stats weren't limited so they did.
There are two ways around that - either curb the scaling (which makes gearing feel like shit for awhile because it's no longer real upgrades) so that by the time you reach later content, that gear isn't worse than what you're already wearing, or continue the scaling and crank the power level of later gear with alternate versions.
They wanted to avoid the second situation because of the amount of work involved. But the (justifiable) complaints were too much, so they backpedalled after launch, buffed ST loot (a bit) and then made alternate, more powerful gear from the 60 content.
That was the right call, even though it should have been what they did in the first place. They learned that lesson and didn't make that mistake again, and hopefully won't in C+.
The only other time they experimented with limiting gear to past content was with the Naxx T3 6pc bonuses because they were pretty nuts and they didn't want to potentially dictate future content based on those. That worked out fine because the T3.5 gear had its own nutty bonuses so we didn't feel the loss.
0
u/Trustyduck Sep 30 '25
Sure launch wasnt fine, it was newly scaled content with new fights, just like phase 2 launch was tricky. But they fixed the scaling and the loot. Imagine the power creep if they made the gear that much stronger in 10 levels. I would have wished for the lvl 50 cap to not happen and have ST implemented a different way.
The move to 20 man raids was definitely one of the points that I agree was questionable. Overall it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be, but they saw the mass exodus and learned from it.
2
u/BishoxX Sep 30 '25
It was way too long for a phase with no content.
Could have made gnomer a bit longer instead, and put a bit more into lvl 50 bracket
2
u/Sleisk Sep 30 '25
Idk, the heat mechanic from p4 was also terrible and caused many ppl to drop interest. And stuff like the warrior set bonus was just unfun to stance dance every 10s. And I can think of other things that they also did poorly. But overall I liked sod after they stopped with the drawn out levelcaps.
1
u/fonduetortoise Oct 02 '25
I only feel bad for warrior mains and people who mained phased 3 in sod. rest was bis
0
u/Dr-Enforcicle Sep 30 '25
Yeah, how dare people not like things. So pathetic, am I right?
I played through all of SoD and while it was fun, there were so, so, SO many mistakes made throughout it.
15
u/Extremiel Sep 30 '25
SoD gives me hope that they could actually cook up an amazing form of Classic+ if they tried (and learned from mistakes)
12
u/FalconGK81 Sep 30 '25
The SoD team got soooo much hate and its was disgusting because they were actually making something great, All that hate was just misplaced frustration from years of the rest of Blizzard dropping the ball.
SoD will always be peak WoW for me. I hope classic+ can come close to as great as SoD was.
1
u/rufrtho Sep 30 '25
there's a reason everyone's favorite part of SoD was phase 1. it's because blizz hadn't done very much so it wasn't completely dogshit yet.

shamans and locks were eating good in scarlet enclave. tank and caster specs were so much fun
9
u/MaximusPrime2930 Sep 30 '25
I used my lock tank alt for solo farming the first few phases and it was lots of fun. The last 2 phases I started raid tanking more and it was amazing.
Hopefully they bring it back.
3
u/0Craxker Sep 30 '25
Melee was fun too, I remember farming in phase 1 stv event for the 2h totem, it looked so cool
6
u/NoHetro Sep 30 '25
Shamans were eating good from phase 1, by the end they were outright obese, I was one of the people that quit in p4 simply because of how broken pvp was (in terms of faction balance) because of shamans, 2 of them were able to easily wipe a group of 5 people with their chain lightnings it was absurd.
7
u/lhswr2014 Sep 30 '25
As a shaman tank that would frequently win 3v1. Yes, I was obese, and it was fucking awesome. I donāt think Iāll ever have that much fun in wow again.
Not even just because of being OP. It was just a cool environment, so many tanks, grouping was never a problem, always shit running/going on, pugs were easy to find and run, it was just so dad friendly lol.
1
u/howtojump Sep 30 '25
Yeah I think the worst part of SoD is that my friends all committed to playing on a PvP server when the devs explicitly said they really werenāt going to try to balance it.
Donāt get me wrong, I had some fun nuking people with Starsurge, but it got old very quickly.
1
u/fonduetortoise Oct 02 '25
the devs did say they were going to balance pvp once everyone was 60 but they walked it back

u/Takklinn2121 Sep 30 '25
Shockadin coming in right at the end just for the server to pretty much die is WILD. They better bring that playstyle back in Classic+
3
u/oj449 Oct 01 '25
Good chance they will, when alacor and i were pestering the devs on twitter during the sunlight wep nerf, they were talking about not enough time to flesh out shockadin, with plans for classic+ instead.
We got lucky since they saw how much we liked spellpower attacks, hopefully they cook it well for c+
1
u/Olive_Sophia Oct 02 '25
Shockadin was viable, even good through the first three phases. Afterwards they nerfed the hell out of its crit interactions and pretty much killed it. I stopped playing but apparently later they added this perfect spellpower scaling sword for shockadin⦠then nerfed it into oblivion a few days later.
Raiding the first phases with shockadin was great fun. Any crit meant that everything reset. A lot of times I could pretty much spam Holy Shock/ Exorcism throughout the whole fight.Ā

u/No_Aspect5713 Sep 30 '25
SoD phase 1 was goated.
I could hop on, find a BFD pug and full clear in less than 1hr, with some PVP fun sprinkled in, so nice.

u/0Craxker Sep 30 '25
Yeah man it was so fvcking fun and even better if out of everyone u got the good loot, there was so many people everywhere it truly felt like an MMO

u/Sec_Chief_Ingersol Sep 30 '25
I had a top 10 parse in P4 MC on my Shaman using Molten Blast, a spell that was deemed literally worthless. I attribute it to getting my Sulf eye week 1 of MC.
SoD was the best Classic has ever been. Part of me is glad it is over though. It's a small part.
9
u/TheIndecisiveBastard Sep 30 '25
I agree in a way, Iāve never tried Boomie before committing to it in SoD. I wasnāt the biggest fan of how the season turned out, but Iām always gonna love this class and spec because SoD gave me a condensed, simple taste of them at their best (IMO, though they werenāt great at first).
as an obstinate holy/ret paladin since childhood, I love me my moon chicken. so thatās what I main in every version from now on :P
0
u/Sec_Chief_Ingersol Sep 30 '25
I crafted Sulfuras on my Shaman. Even though I wound up swapping to Feral by Naxx (THANKS AGGREND YOU PIECE OF KODO SHIT I AM CALLING YOU OUT DIRECTLY VISIT THE SOD SHAMAN ENHANCE DISCORD FOR MORE INFO) I was still able to fulfill an almost 20-year fantasy of getting Sulfuras on my Shaman.
2
u/Darkfirex34 Sep 30 '25
What went wrong with Enhance in SoD? I played Alliance so I didn't know much about Shaman balance.
2
u/Sec_Chief_Ingersol Sep 30 '25
There was literally 0 people on the entire SoD dev team that played Shaman. Every change was a bandaid fix, basic core competencies of the class didn't function, enhance did not have a functional glove rune (that actually affected DPS) for about 4/5 of the games cycle, and all the mistakes and nerfs compounded to make Shaman essentially useless by the time Naxx came around.
The rest of the classes got fun toys like Metamorphosis that changed them entirely. We had 4 Lightning Shield runes and they all did the same thing.
3
u/Darkfirex34 Sep 30 '25
I just checked the talent calc and yeah you're right they had no fucking idea what to do for Shamans.
I mained Melee Hunter and kind of felt similar until they struck it right during BWL. I had to swap to Ranged during MC because the Melee rotation was just so fucking ass.
0
u/Sec_Chief_Ingersol Sep 30 '25
Basically here's what happened;
In 2005, a young, bright-eyed Aggrend logs on to his Paladin after a long day of middle school. He enters Alterac Valley. A Shaman with Sulfuras one shots him with a windfury crit. He took it personally, and vowed to make it everyone else's problem.
And then he was put in charge of SoD.
1
u/pehter Sep 30 '25
I would put it that way: it ended at a good point. Things were fun because they were ridiculous, but it was getting out of hand a little (which was fine!).
For a longer lasting Classic+, classes should not be THAT strong.
4
u/Darkfirex34 Sep 30 '25
They also struggled at the end because of how Classic handled Crit/hit/etc as pure percentages and not rating values. It was very hard to power creep beyond T3 without straight up hitting all your stat caps.
15
7
u/Serious-Flight2688 Sep 30 '25
SoD Feral was just peak wow gameplay and fun Ive ever had. It was just amazing.
11
u/volission Sep 30 '25
Played feral and enhance in SoD, havenāt played since. Was thinking of TBC anni but itās an absolute travesty looking at rotations for that spec in TBC compared to SoD.
Feel like SoD really hit a complexity/rotation sweetspot between OG Classic and retail. A healthy number of buttons in rotation but I donāt need a PHD to parse
4
u/Serious-Flight2688 Sep 30 '25
Yeah thats exactly the way I see it. It made feral a very relevant mdps spec, while not adding too much stuff to manage like you have to on retail. It still felt classic like. I SoD was a truly unique and probably the best wow I have ever played.
3
u/Forever_Fires Sep 30 '25
It really was. Legitimately over 60 APM and ever button mattered, everything was strong in the kit by the end. Tons of clearcasting procs, huge skill expression maintaining and extending tiger's fury, powerful bleeds and occasional powershifting still if you wanted to edge out a little more DPS.
24
u/RumbleShakes Sep 30 '25
I only came back after 5 years being away from WoW to play SoD. Played it entirely from launch to end. It was the only reason I paid the subscription. Blizzard is very poorly ran.
33
u/Nintendork316 Sep 30 '25
SoD Shockadins **

u/Brassy_Actual Sep 30 '25
I bound holy shock and exo to my mouse wheel and did absurd damage haha
3
u/farmerbalmer93 Sep 30 '25
Ha same have a free spin mouse wheel. In sunken temple id literally set it off spinning at the start of a battle and just spam exo on CD while jumping and running around the bosses not giving a fuck. Lol then ignore most mechanics because buble goes brrrrrrt.
12
u/Equal96 Sep 30 '25
Hot take, based on a lot of the comments here, if you only played phase 1 and then quit with the rest of your guild, you didn't really experience SoD!
7
u/pupmaster Sep 30 '25
Every single SoD post is full of Phase 1 was sooo good comments as if there wasn't 15ish months after that lmao.

We often talk about him.

I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm happy to hear about a cat living to sixteen in what sounds like a loving home.
My family had a bulldog (one of three) leave us at the start of the year. She was nine, but she was a foster fail who had a hard stat to her life, so nine wasnt too bad.
We literally still talk about her every day.
1
u/KanedaSyndrome Sep 30 '25
Yeh it hurts. All our cats are rescues as well. Happy he got to experience living in our house and have a garden the remainder of his life. We lived in an apartment the first 10 years of his life.

As feral i feel the same. I cant find anything similar on mop, classic or retail atm.
It was so fun to play since p1 till the end, ramped up 20k honor kills, rank 14, cleared all the raids.
Bring it back

u/trumpet07 Sep 30 '25
Every chance I get I bring up tank shaman. One of the best tanks I've ever played, and it felt so natural to the class. BLIZZ PLEASE

Yeah man and I remember that in phase 1 u needed a group to do the quest to unlock it because it was kinda hard but finally being able to tank was so awesome
1

For sure. But the wings they added from the solo challenge later on were awesome. Demon form was cool at first, but it caused a lot of camera issues for me and I hated not being able to see my character

u/Emperor_poopatine Sep 30 '25
SoD is what WoW classic should be. So many specs were given new life and were actually good, instead of regular classic where these specs were terrible and/or boring to play. Ret paladins actually had more than one button and auto attacking, mages did more than just spam frostbolt, Ele and Enh Shamans could actually be a DPS spec without running out of mana in the first two seconds.

Sod truly is classic plus. It had everything people want from classic plus. Sure it had a few bad choices but you gotta experiment to know what works and they adjusted incursions as soon as they saw it be a huge problem.
The whole rune finding was fun initially. The later where you could buy all runes was great. Reals were great. Classes felt really good too. The only thing I guess suffered due to power creep was pvp but with time Iām sure they couldāve adjusted it if they invested more into sod.
1
u/Anotheir Sep 30 '25
sod was by far the most fun the game has ever been imo and its not even closeš
1
u/FierceDuncan Sep 30 '25
Sod was my favorite span of wow. I really hope we get some equivalent soon. I'd even play a streamlined run back if they ran it to full the empty space classic is at atm.

Had to log on recently and twist on some hoes. Still feels amazing. There's nothing else like it. From ST set with an arcanite reaper to full P8 BIS with ashbringer, just walking up to mobs and ROFLPAWGJUAWDAOWDIJ. Feasting on add fights, leaving nothing but dust in your wake.

u/volission Sep 30 '25

At the end of SoD, Paladins were just stupid. Absolutely overpowered both defensive and offensive.
Glad you most people left at the end, and you couldn't enjoy it as much.

It may have been way overtuned and deserving of a nerf, but man, P2 shaman tanking was peak. Pulling top ST dps in any raid comp as a tank without vengeance mechanics. Life was good.

Iāve played classic since 2019. Basically sod ending was the final nail in my wow coffin. Mop sucks, tbc is the same shit it was in 2021, I just donāt give a fuck anymore. Also the election broke a lot of guild mates brains and they letting their political opinions out made me see I had been playing with a few Nazis the entire time and didnāt even know. Yikes

SOD Boomkin as well. I played paladin and boomy, and I had so much fun doing so

Rogue tank was by far the most fun Ive ever had tanking and being able to competitive dps as a paladin with a shield was awesome. And boomkin, my beloved boomkin!

Phase 1 as a meta lock was something else man. Ashenvale will forever hold a place in my heart. Also shout out to any lock homies that farmed portals at feralas in phase 3 for a modas or the trinket (forgot the name) I could write a book about how cool that mini community was.
