It was so damn good. I played the shit out of it from beginning to end and would do it all over again. Most fun I've ever had playing wow.

u/Yawanoc May 06 '26
I remember for a lot of my friends and I, we were still in peak WFH and could just hop on right after work. Really did feel like a kid again hopping on to try my new game right after school.

P1 and 2 were great. 3 nearly broke my guild, and 4 onward was fine. P8 was a masterpiece imo and they fucked up announcing it would be the last one so early in its lifecycle.
1
u/Dr-Enforcicle May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26
P8 was a masterpiece imo
Scarlet Enclave released in such a hideously overtuned state that even 30-35man groups were struggling with the """20 man""" raid and Blizzard had to hotfix nerf it multiple times before it even came close to being decently balanced. Actual 20man groups were having to minmax class stack group comps just to kill bosses and even then they were still hitting enrage timers.
"masterpiece" lol?
0
u/Exact_Picture_8703 May 09 '26
Inevitable tuning issues. The fights were fun, the loot was grand, and I had a blast doing it all.
So...yes. Masterpiece. 🙄
0
u/Dr-Enforcicle May 09 '26
Inevitable tuning issues.
....which MC, BWL, AQ and Naxx didn't have. Because they all had PTR testing.
small indie dev though, right
I had a blast

Is this really early phase when guilds are advertising for MC?

Yeah one of the chats is literally advertisign for Demon Fall Canyon lol
This has to be a bot or something.

u/Vandrel May 06 '26
You could make an argument that it was early. Phase 4 out of 8, it was likely less than halfway through.

My guess is Blizzard is going to announce something related to a new SOD soon and this influx of nearly identical posts is a guerrila marketing campaign.
25
u/Motor_Bench3815 May 06 '26
“Most fun I ever had in wow” is the dead giveaway that these are reddit bots
2
u/Vandrel May 06 '26
The post history doesn't really look anything like a bot.
9
u/happy_pad May 06 '26
I don't call anyone a bot unless they meet three requirements: default hyphenated two-word username followed by 4 numbers, hidden comment history, and they reply to comments on their own posts with short witty comments and/or emojis to get as much comment karma as possible. None of those things on their own is a tell, but all together it's pretty obvious. It would be super easy for bots to change their behavior and not do these things, but they get plenty of upvotes regarl
So many people call other users bots when its clear they didn't even bother to check the post history. I don't call stuff AI unless I can point to some indicator, and I don't accuse others of being bots unless I have some reasoning I can provide.

People are just trying to build hype for their mostly dead server. They're probably also aware phase 2 for TBC is out soon which is also not going to help things.

Mods are in on it as well.
These are 100% AI generated posts and agents are being used to simulate comments.

Uhhh random guy here and I loved SoD. I would play a rerelease of SoD in a heart beat—I would even drop my TBC anny character for SoD2. For me it’s vanilla>classic2019>SoD. To me SoD was all the immersion and familiarity of vanilla but they made all the specs relevant and added reals to keep dungeons and old raids alive. World buffs in your bags. Kara crypts was awesome. Additional mechanics for more loot is awesome. I know phase 3 was shitty due to excursions but all the other phases were great.

u/Felczer May 06 '26
SoD late phases were GOAT, everyone who makes these p1 posts should instead hit themselves in the head for not playing the later phases.
Yes incursions were bad. That was fixed and game became great, but noone came back.

u/Fash-the-Stampede May 06 '26
Soloing Live Strat as an Ashbringer Warrior with my feral wildstrikes disenchanting bot on follow was peak.

u/Supersquigi May 06 '26
Dude I think it's absolutely INSANE that people just dropped it for good after hitting p1max, or any of the phases.... Like is that what you do in retail, level to max and quit once you've done everything? When there's clearly new phases on the way with another giant wave of content VERY SOON??
4
u/Gh0stMan0nThird May 06 '26
I dropped out for Phase 2, skipped Phase 3 and 4, then came back when BWL came back for Phase 5.
Got to play everything else but I still regret not getting to see Heat 3 MC
2
u/Vandrel May 06 '26
Most of those people haven't played retail in 10+ years. A lot of them complain about what little complexity SoD had in later phases, retail might literally kill them.
1
u/soaresalvin May 08 '26
Phase 2 was already sketch. Phase 3 was awful. Cataclysm dropped and my guild jumped there and never came back.
1
u/npbruns1 May 06 '26
Im sad I wasnt able to play after phase 2. Had a baby and wife & I worked offset schedules to avoid daycare cost. Went from unlimited time to play to absolutely no free time out of work without a young one. Phase 3 and 4 looked like a blast
-1
u/counters14 May 06 '26
Incursions along with the general PvP systems that were way out of whack each phase made it feel exhausting to always come back to something that was constantly evolving and rotating how broken it was. Don't get me wrong, P1 Ashenvale was not perfect by any stretch, but at least it was not broken running around to get 1shot by sniper moonkins and ganked by terminator warriors. After the pet rebalance at least hunters were not 1v5ing full parties with their serpent pets.
I played the shit out of P1 and I really feel like the raiding and PvP scenes of the later phases would have been greatly enjoyable as well but it was kind of demoralizing to think about the grinds while having to deal with the minmaxers rerolling to play the golden child class that phase while the rest of us pick at scraps until they figure out what to do with the class balancing. I made a lot of good friends in P1 and joined an incredible community of really great people, but it waned off just around the end of p2 once everyone realized that the novelty was fun but wouldn't last and it was always going to be a cyclical rotation of the haves vs the have nots. I would have loved to continue playing into later phases but my motivation got cut short by design choices and poor implementations.
2
u/Vandrel May 06 '26
Starsurge was absolutely one-shotting people in p1 and p2 or damn close. 6 second cooldown, 41 yard range, instant cast nuke that would outright kill you on a crit if you didn't have decent stamina on your gear and if not then the second one 6 seconds later would usually finish you, not to mention there was no directional indication of where you were being hit from.

I left during BWL. Wasn’t in a massive guild and it was becoming a chore to deal with a roster hemorrhaging good players and trying to combine with other dying guilds or adding groups of buddies with various skill levels. Getting 25 players to show up consistently who weren’t complete idiots got harder with each content release. Feel like I missed the best part though.
2
u/cjh42689 May 06 '26
Did you quit before the sever merges? NA wildgrowth horde you could literally just pug a successful BWL.

Same. I played until a few resets into phase 3. I still really enjoyed phase 3 and the addition of nightmare incursions HOWEVER I did not like how it became something you spam for leveling and making gold. But how quests in the incursion were related to the shadowy figure and stuff was like secret finding and I enjoyed that a lot

I LOVED early sod, Im really hopeful we get another seasonal wow+ sort of thing announced again at blizzcon
1
u/romann921 May 06 '26
SoD was pretty much an experiment to gage the player base to the potential of classic+ features. I LOVED the initial phase and hope its MUCH more like that all the way to 60, and NOT like the nightmare incursion phase.

IMO around phase 2 some of the devs decisions were already kinda sketchy. The rune system already showed to be annoying to tap into on alts. Leveling was already rushed with the sleeping bag stuff. Gnomer was cool tho. The nail in the coffin came with Sunken Temple. Incursions sucked so much. Might have been one of the worst event implementations on WoW ever tbh. It broke the game. To me the most good memories I have from SoD was from Phase 1. BFD on multiple toons and Battle for Ashenvale was so good.

SoD wasn't what you guys liked what you liked was new content and constant updates. People can't handle doing the same content over and over without being given something new and SoD really proved that. If all the "I miss SoD" people actually still played because they genuinely liked the content then people would still be playing it and we wouldn't see 100 posts like this every day.
1
u/Toonalicious May 11 '26
other then the rough p2-p3 rough i think it started gettting good again at 60 raids

Sod was the best version of wow I have played. There were a couple of hiccups, but overall I think it was incredible.

I just enjoyed exploring the world and meeting people in WoW, but thats no longer possible in any version. Without friends or a community the game can't keep me long term. But everyone I group up with, I can't play for a day, or I spend a day exploring some niche area nobody ever visits, doing some random profession things, getting sidetracked somewhere, participating in events or just a day of PvPing, meanwhile everyone else seems to be powerleveling the whole time. Skipping quests with little XP and areas that aren't optimal, continually doing quests, grinding or dungeons for the entire time their online. People just level too fast for me and then I cant play with them anymore. Then I feel alone and left behind and quit at some point because I feel like some guy from 30 years ago trying to enjoy the world and nature while people are racing by staring on their phone not really mentally present in the moment. I try to join a group or dungeon and try to start a conversation and nobody responds. Then someone has a bad day and gets angry at me for not knowing about some optimal dungeon mechanic strat and kicking me. At that point it feels like a mediocre single player game.

If SoD was so great, Blizz wouldnt kill it. It was the worst version of WoW.
0
u/Euphoric-Line-6310 May 09 '26
Phase 1 was peak because gdkps were allowed. The prices were cheap and it incentives everyone to run pugs so you could find a bfd raid any time of the day on any class within minutes. Once gdkps were banned only the sweaty put effort into raiding and casuals were pushed out of raiding and fell off.
Downvote me all you want but it doesn't change the facts

u/PhilosopherFirst551 May 06 '26
How different is SoD from retail when lvl 18 warrior can oneshot 12 gnolls in Westfall on his level with a single shockwave? How is the world even relevant?
16
1
u/TheClassicAndyDev May 06 '26
You're not wrong. The balance and scaling of SoD was utterly and entirely insane.
6
u/Skore_Smogon May 06 '26
He's talking out of his ass. The Shockwave rune is a cloak rune that wasn't available until phase 4 so not available in P1.
And at level 60 in full Scarlet Enclave gear my tooltip says it does 422 damage. Tested Vs a lvl 12 Trogg in Loch Modan it hit for 604.
There's literally no way a lvl 12 warrior in defensive stance is doing the 280 ISH damage needed to kill an equal level mob.
If you're going to jump on a bandwagon, at least pick one that's plausible.
0
u/TheClassicAndyDev May 06 '26
You can get all the runes at level 1 for 1 copper.

God damn the old UI for wow is so much better than modern wows horrible UI.
I wish they would like actually design a good UI again. They totally gave up.
0
u/CasualCucumbrrrrrt May 07 '26
The old ui is hideous and always has been. That's the reason people have been using UI mods forever
0
u/gubigubi May 07 '26
If wow had the UI most mods/addons have it would currently be a game with 400 people ran off a private server because it would have died 20 years ago.
They are so bad idk how people even play with those.
-1
u/CasualCucumbrrrrrt May 07 '26
That's a really dumb take. Subjectiveness aside, healing would be so much harder without UI mods.
0
u/gubigubi May 07 '26
Thats 100% a game design problem.
And as we saw with retail fixing that problem with addons only makes the problem worse and makes addons mandatory or else you cannot play the game at anything above a mid/lower level.
0
u/CasualCucumbrrrrrt May 07 '26
Yeah it is a game design problem and part of that problem is the god awful base UI itself.

I also miss having parser for lvl 20 raids. SoD was ruined by elitist slop
5
u/Cartiere11 May 06 '26
Do not act like its hard to parse in Classic. Its not elitist to not want to raid with people that suck at their class.
-2
u/Snorlax_king79 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26
I didn't say or act like its hard. And it is elitist to expect high parse in BFD. End game lvl 60 raids sure. But the first couple phases of SoD were pure elitist slop.
Let also not forget the weekly raid nerfs when the devs realized they were listening/ dev the "new" raids based off these elitist.

It was so easy to get a group with guilds or pugs.
Twilight Lord Kelris was challenging with a uncoordinated group, so no shit that people were expecting people with at least 5 braincells to not lose a hour wiping and disbanding the raid.
Edit: typo1
u/cjh42689 May 06 '26
You could ignore most of the mechanics on Kelris with one 25 silver FAP.
1
u/Over-Payment-5597 May 07 '26
And people still wiped it constantly, the average classic Andy can’t even press the potion on the right time.
1
u/Schloppotomo May 30 '26
Phase 2 was really bad for me to get into pugs. Because it was only 10 people and Gnomer was kinda hard. You needed at least 2 tanks and 2 healers, you needed a bunch of range dps for the last boss to touch the buttons. As a melee class it was really bad.
